Waste management services

We have an experienced and customer focused consultancy team that delivers expert advice in our key service areas of planning and consenting, environmental surveys, modelling and assessment, grid connection, power systems analysis and design.

Our expertise in waste management is focused on regulatory approval, gaining planning permission, environmental permitting and environmental assessment (formal EIA or sub-EIA). We offer a range of services using in-house expertise combined with the use of specialised associate consultants, which enables us to offer an all-encompassing planning and environmental service to clients.

Our power systems experts can manage all grid connection issues surrounding energy recovery projects, completing relevant electrical studies such as harmonics, fault level and dynamic stability analysis, as well as establishing a connection to the transmission or distribution network.

Our range of specialist services for waste management projects includes:• Site finding and feasibility • Planning and consenting• Environmental appraisal and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)• Environmental permitting• Grid connection and power system studies• Community engagement• Noise and acoustics survey, modelling and assessment• Best available techniques (BAT) assessment• Environmental management systems.

Case studies

Service: EIA and consenting Client: Drakelow Renewable Energy Centre

TNEI provided environmental, consenting and grid connection support for a 17.5MW CHP ready gasification plant on the site of the former Drakelow Power Station in Derbyshire. The gasification process produces a synthetic gas to generate steam to drive a steam turbine so that electricity is generated and exported to the local distribution network or via private wire connection. The plant also has the potential to export heat to commercial or residential users on the adjacent consented Drakelow Park mixed use development.

The scope of work extended from initial feasibility and devising of the planning strategy through to stakeholder engagement and gaining consent and obtaining the necessary environmental permits. By effectively managing the EIA and consultation processes, our team ensured that the planning application was determined without delay at the local level. A challenging programme and budget were effectively managed to ensure both were adhered to.

Further support has involved the discharge of planning conditions along with further assessment work as part of the environmental permit application process, with TNEI’s expert acousticians undertaking noise modelling and assessment for both consenting and permitting. Our grid team has provided further specialist technical support.

Service: Noise Impact Assessment (NIA)Client: Solid Fuel Recovery (SRF) process plant

TNEI provided an environmental noise impact assessment (NIA) in order to support the PPC Part A permit application for a Solid Fuel Recovery (SFR) process plant in Perthshire. The SFR process is an advanced fuel preparation process which takes fine residual waste from existing recycling facilities that is currently landfilled. After drying, the material is processed to remove over-sized waste and separation of all ferrous and non-ferrous metals prior to shredding and baling.

The NIA comprised of two elements; firstly, a comprehensive noise source inventory was compiled and an assessment made against BAT (best available techniques). Compilation of the inventory included a mixture of analysis of manufacturer supplied noise and test data, and on site noise level measurements. Secondly, an assessment of noise levels received at the nearest noise sensitive receptors was undertaken through a series of operational noise level measurements and comparison made against noise level limits derived from existing background noise levels.
