Eunice Marie Howe, age 82, of Garretson, died on Sunday, March 8, 2015, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 12, 2015, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson, with interment in the South Highland Cemetery, rural Sherman. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Wednesday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. Eunice was born at Sioux Valley Hospital on September 19, 1932 to Obed and Ina (Christopherson) Grant. She attended District #37 country school near Sherman until the eighth grade and then attended high school in Jasper, MN for two years. Following the death of her father, Eunice and her mother moved to Sioux Falls where she attended and graduated from Washington High School in 1950. Eunice attended Augustana College and graduated with a degree in elementary education. After college she taught second grade at Garfield Elementary. On June 5, 1953 Eunice was united in marriage to Verlyn Howe at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. They moved to a farm near Colton and Eunice taught first and second grades in Lyons. In 1956 they moved to a farm near Sherman where they raised their four sons. In 1989 Eunice and Verlyn moved to acreage near Garretson where they resided until Verlyn’s death in 2013. Eunice made her home at The Inn on Westport until her death on March 8, 2015. Eunice was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She had a love of family, a strong Christian faith, and her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren brought much joy to her life. Eunice was a wonderful homemaker and always made time to bake everyone’s favorite cookies and bars for every birthday and to sit and play games, draw or make crafts with her grandchildren. Eunice was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Sherman where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school for many years. She also enjoyed quilting with the church ladies, bible study, and WELCA. She was also a member in the Echo Extension and the American Legion Auxiliary in Garretson. Eunice is lovingly remembered by her sons, Mark, Chapel Hill, NC, Brian (Heather), Steven (Beverly), and John, all of Sherman; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Howe, Ryan (Jennifer) Howe, Nathan (Betsy) Howe, Jill (Mike) Schwebach, Brad, James, Scott, and Thomas Howe; 5 great grandchildren; one brother, Donald Grant, Sioux Falls, two sisters-in-law Elvira Grant, Ballston Spa, NY and Victoria Howe, Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verlyn, an infant son, her parents, a daughter-in-law Margaret Howe, brother Glen Grant, brother-in-law Duane Howe and sisters-in-law Carolyn Grant, LaVerne (Howe) Sandgren and her husband Ralph.
