For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The altar in our church belongs to God. All are welcome and encouraged to come forward during the distribution of Holy Communion. To receive communion, stand or kneel at the rail, stand against the plaster wall inside the rail, or notify an usher that you need to have communion brought to you at your seat. After you receive communion at (or inside) the rail, please remain in place until the chalicist says “Go in peace.” The response after receiving each kind (bread and wine) is “Amen,” or you may remain silent. If you wish to receive a blessing instead of communion, please cross your arms over your chest before the Bread comes by. We do not practice “intinction,” that is, dipping bread in wine. If you do not wish to drink from the chalice, please cross your arms over your chest so the chalicist knows this. Receiving the Sacrament in either kind alone constitutes a full and valid Communion. Gluten-free wafers are available; simply ask the person distributing the Bread. Saint John's is committed to achieving the full inclusion of all people in Christ's Body, the Church. Please feel free to ask the rector if you have any questions.

Please join in singing the communion music overleaf:

SAINT JOHN’S CHURCH NEWS AND NOTES—November 3, 2013 Senator BRUCE TARR will visit TODAY at coffee hour at noon to offer congratulations to St. John's on our 150th Anniversary.

CELEBRATING STEWARDSHIP 2014 This week Celebrating Stewardship 2014 focuses on MISSION, how we reach out to serve the broader community on Cape Ann and beyond. During the last three Sundays, we have looked at MINISTRY, all the things we do within this place to enrich our spirits, SANCTUARY, the sacred spaces entrusted to our care where we find joy, solace and community and MUSIC, the joyful noise that fills our lives and brings others through our doors. On each of these Sundays, at both services, through Bret’s homilies, presentations by parish leaders and brochures especially prepared for each focus area, we have attempted to bring a new vitality to our stewardship efforts and to make clear how much these various ministries depend on each parishioner doing our part to support them. It is our hope that through this Celebration of Stewardship campaign each of us will focus anew on all the richness of our life together here at St. John’s and that we will each decide to give back to God in gratitude for God’s extraordinary blessings in our lives. Without your faithful giving, the many blessings we share here at St. John’s would not be possible. On Friday, November 8, please join us for a festive potluck followed by the “world premiere” of the first two parts of a documentary film about the history of our parish being produced by Jim LaBelle and Don Cole. You won't want to miss this. Everyone is welcome but space is limited so be sure to sign up in the parish hall letting us know how many people in your family will be coming and what you’re planning to bring. We can also use set-up and clean-up crews as always. We’ll gather for supper at6 pm and then move into the sanctuary for the movie. Finally, on Sunday, November 10, we will conclude Celebrating Stewardship 2014 by recommitting ourselves to the future of St. John’s, bringing our 2014 pledge cards to the altar during both services. Please continue to pray about what you will do to support the ministry and mission of St. John’s in 2014.

THE GIFT OF DISCERNMENT Nov 16 9 am at SSJE Monastery in Cambridge MA. How do we learn to recognize the movement of God’s Spirit in our lives? How do we distinguish the Spirit’s activity in consolation and desolation? Drawing on the wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola and his Spiritual Exercises, this workshop will introduce participants to the Ignatian “Rules of Discernment” and show how these may be applied when making choices in life. Workshop led by Br. David

Vryhof, SSJE Register: to reserve a place: SSJE.org/workshop Workshop location: the Monastery Undercroft, 980 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, MA, 02138. To get to the Undercroft, enter the Guesthouse garden through the gate to the left of the Chapel; signs will indicate the door down to the undercroft. All participants are invited to stay and join the Brothers for Noonday Prayer at 12:30 pm.

MUSIC TODAY: We abound in traditional “All Saints’” fare, the choir singing an anthem from the American folk tradition as well as the world premiere of a voluntary on the final hymn “Zeuch mich, zeuch mich” by Chicago composer Robert Lind.

Welcome! Regular worshiper, first-timer, or occasional visitor, we hope you will enjoy our fellowship! St John’s worship, Sunday Adult Forums, and other programs are always open to everyone. Come and check us out! Children are always welcome at worship in St John’s Church!

To participate fully in our worship you will need this booklet and for the hymns The Hymnal 1982 (it’s blue, and in the pew racks in front of you.) You will not need a copy of the BCP for this service. First time in our Church? We are delighted that you are here! For some visitors our customs are very familiar, for others they are completely new. If you are among the latter group, RELAX, there is nothing that you can do by accident that will cause offence! Read the first and last pages of this booklet, ask an usher, watch your neighbors, go with the flow. Introduce yourself to our priest, and sign our guest book after the service.

Bathrooms: There are three: One on each level at the far end of the building from our worship space. Exit the door opposite the organ and follow the signs.

Children in Church We are delighted to have children in church. Our “rule” about children at St John’s is that you should not do anything that will make your child hate to come back. As the parent or caretaker of a child at worship your primary responsibility is to your child. Children will sometimes be rambunctious. Don’t worry about an occasional wail, squeak, squawk, or clunk. We will all be just fine. There is a play space at the front of the pews near the altar (on the right) with toys and activities for children. Feel free to take your child(ren) there at any time. If you need to change a diaper, feed a little one, or just need some space for a bit, take your child(ren) into the Thompson Room — through the doorway opposite the organ. There, you will find a table, chairs, couches, carpeted space, and a PA system that will let you hear what is going on in church. Go to and from the Thompson Room ANYTIME, no matter what part of the service is going on. Your child’s comfort, safety, and well-being are your proper concern, and we support you in fulfilling that obligation.

Access Needs: If you need help at the step leading up to the altar, or would find it easier to receive Holy Communion in your pew, please speak to an usher. Hearing Assistance devices are also available. If you would like to try one out, please speak to an usher.
