With leadership from Washington Green Schools, 300 Everett students connected STEM learning with career opportunities. Between saving energy on campus and learning from experts, these young people blazed the trail to a clean energy future.
Students at Elk Plain K–8 in Pierce County became pioneers for a waste-free future. With green school certifi cation as their goal, this 540-student team diverted 53,000 hard-to-recycle items from the landfi ll and modeled best practices for local families.
A pollination station, terraced garden beds, and a biofuel-powered greenhouse: students at La Center High School applied their skills to design and plant gardens for their rural community. These young leaders earned recognition when they journeyed down the path to sustainability.
Fifth graders in Seattle Public Schools kicked off their science unit with the question: “How did guacamole stay fresh in a landfi ll for 25 years?” They dug for answers through our new curriculum, Zombie Guacamole, which explores food systems and how decomposition works.

When I talk with students across the state, I’m inspired by their sense of responsibility for the future. Creating green schools gives young people the chance to set and reach goals that benefi t their communities and the environment. Guided by inspiration and the power of teamwork, they’re achieving results. Thank you for giving the next generation the opportunity to become leaders for a sustainable world.
