Weekly Newsleer - September 13, 2015 “You are redeemed to ripple.” Warwick Weekly What Gifts Do You Take From the Offering? An Invitation for Today… Our church stewardship team is asking that you take a gift from the offering plate today. Yes, you read it right. As the offering comes by you, please take away an “R2R” bookmark for each member of your family who attends our church. The bookmarks will help all of us mark the beginning of this year’s invitation to consider the impact or “ripple effect” that each of us has in God’s ministry here through Warwick Memorial UMC. As our pastors begin preaching on the topic of redemption in the new series “Redeemed to Ripple,” you are invited and challenged to think of the power of your ripple, as well as our collective rippling as a church. The series will culminate with our annual pledge Sunday on November 1 st . Now is the time to begin to think of the amazing power God sees in you and all of us as we seek to live faithfully sharing his love with the world. Please place your R2R bookmark in a book you read frequently or on your desk, fridge or other frequently sighted location to remind you to discern and pray on the power of your rippling effect from God’s amazing redeeming power in your life. Praise be to God that we have the gift of redemption and that gift is not to be stored up, but to be shared freely. May the ripples of God’s grace bless you in our fall journey together and always! Join us today at 10:10am for our Fall Kick-Off Gathering in the Celebration Center! What happens at this kick-off event? Well, we hope there will be wonderful fellowship with our church family. There will be some light refreshments to share. The kids will have a time to kick, yes, kick, soccer balls and earn prizes. Our pastors will have a soccer kick-off. Who will win? Stick around to find out! And, at around 10:30, we will gather to celebrate our Sunday School ministry and send kids and youth off for a great start of Sunday school for the year. Adults will hang back for a special program that will highlight small group ministries for fall, including a time of hearing some plans from our pastors. Whether you are new to the church or have been here a long time, you will want to attend this informative Fellowship opportunity! Don’t forget to look for Kay Fries (during the kick-off celebration) and Jim Cole (after the 11:15 service) and purchase one of our awesome church mugs or magnets (Mugs are $6 each and magnets are $4 each). We will continue selling them after services for a few more weeks and they will be available in the church office.

Warwick Weekly What Gifts Do You Take From the Offering?

    An Invitation for Today…

Our church stewardship team is asking that you take a gift from the offering plate today.

A Time of Confession, Repentance, Prayer and Commitment to End Racism: Our Virginia Conference bishop, Bishop Young Jin Cho has issued a call for all churches and pastors of the Virginia Conference to join our brothers and sisters in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. We will take a moment today to spend time in prayer together on these important issues as a church as we ready ourselves to receive Holy Communion. In the wake of the murders of The Emanuel Nine (the senior pastor and eight members of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C.), the Council of Bishops of the A.M.E. Church has asked every church, temple, synagogue, mosque and place of worship “to focus on race ... and be reminded that out of one blood, God created all of us to dwell together in unity.”

Happy Grandparents Day! Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. Some of the people we call grandparents are such because they are our parents' parents — they are blood relations. And some of the people we call grandparents — or "elders" in some cultures — are such because of a quality of compassion, concern, wisdom, and generosity that they demonstrate toward us. The Search Institute has identified that children who have at least five caring adults in their lives, in addition to their parents, are more likely to thrive and less likely to become "at risk." Every congregation is blessed with "grandmas" and "grandpas" who love and share their faith in ways that form us as an extended family, a tribe, a clan of people embraced by the love of God. Here is a prayer for this occasion: God of Abraham and Sarah, grandfather and grandmother in the faith God of all generations: We thank you today for those who are grandparents/elders. We especially thank you for those who are grandparents to us — those who are grandparents by blood relationships, and those unrelated but older than we who generously share their love and wisdom, their time and traditions so that we have roots, stories, and hope. We bless you for the gift of grandparents, and we ask your blessing on them, that their days may be filled with delight in their grandchildren. May their giving and grace toward younger generations bring fulfillment to them and may they be a blessing to all they love and call grand children, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

8 is Enough Groups Forming Now: Are you new to the church and want a fun and easy way to meet members? Have you been going to church here for a long time but would like to get to know other members better? If so, then being in an 8 is Enough group may be for you. It's only a 4 month commitment. At the end of the 4 months, the members of the groups will rotate to form new groups. At that time, you can choose to not continue in the program, if you wish. New groups are being formed for October, November, December and January. How does it work? Once a month each group goes to a local restaurant of their choice for dinner/lunch -- the date and time is decided by members of each group. It's a fun and informal way to meet other members of the church. If you would like to be added to a group or if you would like your name removed from the list, please call Cathy Haskell at 875-1604 or email at [email protected]. If you would like to be in a group that only meets for lunch instead of dinner (usually on Wednesday), please indicate that in your message.

Last Chance to Register for Soul Keeping, a Video-Based Bible Study: You heard our pastors on this topic for the past three weeks, now take the topic deeper, in this six-session, video-based Bible Study, author and pastor John Ortberg helps us discover what the soul is, why it is important, how to assess the soul's health, and how to care for it so that it contributes to the depth and beauty of our relationship with God and others. Although it may add value, it is not necessary for you to have read the book; the video and the study guide will provide the basis for the class.

If you are interested in this Soul Keeping class that will begin on Sept 20, please sign up on the link on the church website or on the signup sheet in the office. The final day for signup will be Sept 13. The class will be held at the same time as the Children and Youth fellowship times on Sunday evenings from 5:45-7:30. You can drop your kids off and come and have your soul fed as well.

Meeting dates will be: Sept 20, 27, Oct 4, 11, 25 and Nov 1. (Note, we will not meet on Oct 18.) If there are any questions please contact Peggy Langille, the group leader. Childcare for those under 3 will be available.

    Household Prayers for the Week

Morning Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Living Word, shine on this day. Quicken my steps and open my ears that I might approach each neighbor with an expectant heart. Amen. Evening Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Beacon of truth, I entrust to you now the day that has been: the tasks accomplished and tasks overlooked; the friends acknowledged and the friends ignored; the silence kept and the silence squandered. In your mercy, mend these tattered offerings. Grant me the gift of rest this night and good companions on the morrow, as you speak me further down the path toward home. Amen.
