This Week’s Worship Notes: This Sunday, we will be finishing our Soul Keeping series, and several folks have shared some great insights as they reflect on the challenges and joys of tending to one’s soul. We are working on additional ways to promote soul keeping this fall, so stay tuned. Also, next Sunday, we are happy to welcome our Minister for Church Growth & Congregational Life, Peggy Langille, as preacher and worship leader for all three services. The pastors will be away on a short family trip and for Gina to preach at a homecoming service. UPWARD Basketball Rally: Join us TODAY at 12:45pm in the Fellowship Hall. All previous volunteers and supporters are invited, and those who want to become part of this ministry are encouraged to join in this rally meeting. If you don’t know anything about basketball, that’s ok. We need volunteers to help with concessions, registration and much more. We are also recruiting for coaches, referees and others jobs or opportunities to help. Please bring a dessert, fruit or veggie dish to share and we will provide some light food and refreshments. Thanks to all who support this program, but please know we need added support to effectively reach local kids through this ministry. Let’s hit the court together this year as an amazing, energized team for Christ! Get Ready for the Fall Kick-Off!

We’re coming to an end of the summer months and Fall will be here before you know it! To welcome everyone back, we have a special event planned to “Kick-Off” the new season.

Sunday, September 13th, at 10:10am in the Celebration Center, we will join together during the Sunday School hour for fellowship, refreshments, and some fun. Worship services will be at their regular times for the day. We hope everyone will take part in the upcoming excitement that the season holds!

For the kids and youth there will be a time to meet their Sunday School teachers and attend a preview class. For the adults, there will be a special highlight program and our pastors will offer info about opportunities to grow and connect. We will also be selling our mugs and magnets again that

day. Mugs are $6 and magnets are $4 - be sure to see Kay Fries in the Celebration Center lobby after the 8:30 and 9am services and the Narthex after the 11:15 service. We will continue selling them after services for a few more weeks and they will be available in the church office.

A great time to invite a friend to church!

Attention Children K to 5th grade: Join us

Thank You: On behalf of the Honduras Medical Team and little girls in Honduras, our thanks go to Christine Dimock for making and sending 40 (yes 40!) little sun dresses to be distributed to those in need during our time in Honduras in September. God is so good and we all have a talent and Christine surely has one in this mission of hers. Again, thank you Christine for all your love and help. The Honduras Medical Team.

Liturgists Needed: Are you interested in helping to lead Sunday morning worship services by serving as a liturgist? Serving in this capacity calls for a willingness to help lead worship by reading scripture and printed prayers as designated by the pastors.

We are currently compiling a list of everyone who is willing to serve beginning this fall, for both the 8:30 and the 11:15 services. There will be a training class held in early September to go over everything you will want to know and at that time we will have a schedule for everyone.

Financial Peace Offered This Fall - Register Deadline Extended to September 4th. Money management knowledge and skills are offered in the Financial Peace University course. The course will be offered again this coming fall at WMUMC. Students learn about cash flow planning, breaking the chain of debt, household budgeting,

purpose of FICA scoring, power of marketing, the role of insurance, bargaining for purchases, understanding investments, planning for retirement, college, family, careers and extra jobs, real estate and mortgages, and the power of giving. It is a Biblically based curriculum that teaches people how to handle money God’s way. If you are interested in attending the next course, go to our website wmumc.org and register for the course by September 4 scroll down to the “news” section. Class will start on Sunday, September 13, at 5:45 p.m. Last class will be on November 8. During this time, activities are offered at our church for infants (nursery), children, and youth. If you have questions, contact Jim Corliss at [email protected] or (757) 810-1679.

Important Hands Across The City Update! Mark October 10 on your calendar! We will be returning to help our neighbors at Courthouse Green. We have 4 homes left to work on from our initial canvasing. Additionally we are working with the City of Newport News on cleaning up and fixing the fence area that separates Courthouse Green from apartment buildings.

There will be work for everyone regardless of ability. We will be doing our evaluation of what work needs to done and getting an idea of the work teams on August 29. If you want to be a part of a team you can sign up on the church website or contact Peggy Langille. ([email protected])

Fall Retreat for Singles - Wounded Hearts, Healing Love: December 4-6. Have the circumstances of life returned you to singleness, perhaps through separation, divorce, or death? Plan now to join us for a special time apart with other singles as we explore the trials, the hurts, the loneliness of being single again, and search for the road leading to healing and wholeness. Cost per person is $105.00 (some financial assistance available). More info and registration found online at: www.campoverlook.org. You will make some wonderful new friends, but the weekend is not a time to seek or start new dating relationships.

Household Prayers for the Week

Morning

In whatever shelter I wake this morning I know this

place is holy because you meet me here.

As I wash my body and prepare for the day, I remember

baptismal waters and the claim upon my life. Wherever

darkness looms, Sovereign God, traffic in mercy this

day. Traffic in mercy this day. Amen.

Evening As darkness spreads over the land, I trust that you move

in it. As I yield the night to sleep and dreams,

I pray you would remake me into a servant bold,

for the sake of Jesus. Amen.
