Message from our Principal/CEOAugust 28, 2013

Dear Parents,

We’re fast approaching the end of one month of school. It’s been busy, as we get into the “rhythm” of the year. As always, we are teaching our students the culture of FCWCS–Warriors are always prompt, polite, productive, and prepared. We call these four qualities, the 4Ps. If your child is new to our school, they will learn that our behavior expectations for all students revolve around the 4Ps.

Please review the Warrior Family Handbook to ensure that all members of your family understand the dos and dont’s of life at FCWCS.

We love our parents to get involve in our school life. The P.T.A. is up and running, and as always we encourage parents, staff, and community members to join. A yearly membership is $10.00. Great schools always have a great P.T.A. Also check out page 6 of this newsletter to find ways that you can assist in making our school a positive place for all to learn and grow.

–Kelly S. Batiste, Principal/CEO

Warrior News September 2013

From the Desk of Nurse Cheryl Robichaux, R.N,

B.S.N.

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year!

It is my pleasure to serve as FCWCS’s school nurse again this academic year. I am on campus every Tuesday and Thursday, and also every other Friday.

According to www.innerbody.com, “a school nurse works closely with school administrators to create a learning environment that meets the physical, mental, and emotional needs of students.” School nurses have been around in some districts since the 1800s. A 100 years ago, nurses were there to primarily identify and quarantine people with contagious diseases. In the 21st century, school nurses’ primary duty is to “provide nursing care and health counsel students and staff.” Schools today often have pupils with chronic illnesses–asthma, diabetes, allergies, etc.– and mental health conditions that require accommodations be made for those with these physical ailments.

School nurses are often responsible for dispensing medications and implementing health plans for students needing such assistance. School nurses keep up with immunization records, check the hearing and eye sight of students in our charge. We advise parents of ailments that may have gone unnoticed by them.

Parents of students who have food allergies should always advise the school nurse of problems in writing. We will then notify our cafeteria staff so that the necessary steps can take place to avoid any problems with meals at school. Of course, we still patch up those scrapes and bruises that occassionaly occur on school grounds.

School nurses also play a role as leaders in health education in their school communities. This newsletter, Warrior News, will serve as a way of corresponding with our parents. I hope to give you information that is pertinent–news you can use–regarding the health of your child.

One of my first assignments for this year is to schedule the dentist to visit

students at school. An application went home a week ago that will grant the dentist, Gregory J. Folse, D.D.S., permission to see your child at school. He will conduct an examination of the teeth, mouth, and neck, but parents must authorize all treatments individually. Treatments possibly include (but are not limited to) the aforementioned exam, radiographs of teeth and jaws, cleaning of teeth and application of topical fluoride, application of plastic sealants, and tooth nerve treatments.

The permission and information document contains all the pertinent information. Parents with questions or concerns about the treatment can call(877).227.9892. A parent is encouraged to attend the dental visit to assist the dentist, if they anticipate their maybe behavioral concerns. The dentist is scheduled to visit our campus on Thursday, September 19th. ###

Make Strides Against Breast Cancer, October 19 @ 9:00 a.m.Executive Assistant, G. Johnson, will lead FCWCS’s Team

The American Cancer Society is trying to eradicate breast cancer.

This organization invests the most money in breast cancer research. Their research is geared to prevent, treat, and ultimately cure the world of its evils. For more than two decades, the ACS has assisted more than four million

women with screeing tests that have probably saved thousands of lives. All this costs money. So, each year ASC attempts to have fund raisers to provide this assistance.

The Fannie Family will take part in the this year’s walk on Saturday, October 19, at 9:00 a.m. (UNO Arena). Mrs. Johnson, our executive assistant, is compiling a team of at least 10 walkers for the non-competitive event. Participants

will seek donations from our school family and the community. Funds collected will be donated to the American Cancer Society to fund their work in stopping this disease that can affect women and men! Can you join our team or contribute to this worthwhile cause? Call or see Mrs. Johnson at the front desk for additional information.

There are 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the USA at the present. Research can make this number greater with your help.

If you are in need of personal information about breast cancer, visit the ACS breast cancer information resources online or call 1.800.227.2345 anytime, day or night. ###
