The people of the United States are drawn from many nations, and chiefly from the nations now

at war. It is natural and inevitable that there should be the utmost variety of sympathy and desire

nation, others another, to succeed in the momentous struggle.

Such divisions amongst us would be fatal to our peace of mind and might seriously stand in the

4,800,000 men served in WW1 (2,000,000 saw active combat).

400,000 African-America were put in segregated units. Most were put in non-combat duties.

15,000 Native-Americans served as scouts, messengers, and snipers in non-segregated units.
