• Using persuasive language, SWBAT construct a topic sentence for a persuasive essay.

• SWBAT construct a counterargument and defense.

• DOL: For a given topic, create 1 topic sentence using persuasive language and appeals.

• Create one counterargument & defense.

• Consider advertising and politicians. How do these people or organizations persuade you to buy (or buy into) whatever they are marketing?– In other words, what strategies or methods do

they use to gain your interest, money, vote, etc.?

perform an action, or to do both.

• Effective persuasive writing appeals to the mind and the emotions of an audience.

• On the next slide are some examples of effective word choices.– Take a minute to read through them.– Choose three that you think are especially effective

& write them underneath your quick write.

• If You Can Convince Mom and Dad,• YOU CAN CONVINCE ANYONE!!!! • Think of some things that you would like to

persuade your parents and/or guardian to allow you to do that they do not want you to do.– Jot down as many things as you can think of

• How might you use language choices, and or the three appeals to create effective topic sentences for your persuasive essay?

• Example 1: Critics of school uniforms claim that when required to wear uniforms, students lose their sense of individuality.

• Example 2: Those unable to make the choice for themselves suffer the most.

• Select one of your ideas from the quick write about what things you might try to persuade your parents to allow you to do.

• Write 3 persuasive topic sentences for this topic (1 for each body

paragraph).

• Now look at the topic sentences you have created.• Rank them from most effective

(persuasive) to least effective.

Persuasive Essays

• How are persuasive essays different from a traditional 5 paragraph essay?

• A good persuasive essay always addresses or acknowledges the opposing argument.

• Then you state why the opposing argument is not valid & your argument is better or more effective (defend or rebutt) the opposition.

Persuasive Essay-Counterargument

• Example of counterargument & defense.• While it is true that television includes very

violent and sexual content, it is also true that TV provides educational venues as well as entertainment. One cannot restrict access to a medium that has redeeming value simply because some are affected negatively and will use it to excess and in inappropriate ways.

Persuasive Essays-groups• You will use the topic you generated for the thing you

would like to persuade your parents to allow you to do.• Get in groups of four.• Decide amongst the four of you which topic your group

will create arguments for.• After you have selected a topic you will break into pairs.• One pair will create 3 reasons why your parents should

allow you to do this.• One pair will create 3 reasons that your parents will say

no.

• On one sheet of paper for your group, write down the 3 reasons & the 3 counterarguments.

• Make sure that you have used persuasive language and or the three appeals.
