Student/Staff Member of the Month Each month, Madison staff and ASB select one student and staff member to be honored. The honoree’s names are published in the daily bulletin, published on Madison’s website and posted on the marquee. Please congratulate them in recognition of their contributions to Madison.
A Legacy of Success In its 55th year of serving the Madison com-munity, our varsity football t e a m h a s carved their legacy into the fabric of the school, and the district, as a two-time state champion in football by winning the State Bowl Championship for the second time in five years. On Friday, December 16 the Madison Warhawks beat San Jose Christian Catholic 21 to 17 at Sacramento State. Fam-ily members, staff, students and alumni were on hand to root on the team and experi-ence this historic moment. It was a day that will live forever in the history of the school and in the lives of all current and former Warhawks who celebrated them in victo-
ry. This is a historic accom-plishment, not only for the school, but the district as a whole. Madison High School is the only school in San Die-go Unified to win a State Bowl game and the only school in the district to have won it twice, let alone twice within five years. Warhawk excellence runs deep at Madison. This histor-ic win is yet another example of how Madison students achieve excellence in their academics, extracurricular participation and community contributions that represent
the essence of our school. Being a part of the Warhawk family is a badge of honor that is en-grained in the experience of
all students at Madison. The pursuit of excellence is con-sistently demonstrated on the field, in the classroom, in the community and within our society. It's not just great day to be a Warhawk; it's an honor that we carry with pride and meaning, representing the best in character, achieve-ment, commitment, communi-ty, family and excellence. I am honored to be represented by such a fine student body and staff members who are com-mitted to being the best. Congratulations to the team for their achievement.

By Officer K If a minor is 16 or older he or she may only possess a handgun or
live ammunition with the written permission of a parent or guardi-
an for legal purposes, such as recreational sports. Certain less
than lethal weapons, such as a remote-firing stun gun, cannot be
sold to minors. A direct-contact stun gun can only be possessed
by a minor who is a minimum of 16-years-old with parent consent.
Some types of firearms including
sawed-off shotguns, machine guns, guns that have had its iden-
tifying number removed, and silencers, are outright illegal
(regardless of parent consent). Other illegal weapons (including
those that are illegal to manufac-ture, import, possess, sell, give or
lend) include any blackjack, nunchaku, metal or composite
knuckles, dirk, dagger, belt buck-le knives, leaded canes, zip guns,
lipstick case knives, writing pen-
knives and other types of pistols. A student who is caught with a
dangerous weapon, or trying to sell one at school, could be sus-
pended or expelled. This is in addition to any criminal charges
that may be filed. Exhibiting a weapon in a rude or angry way is
a misdemeanor, even if the fire-arm is fake. (Penal Code 417) It
can also be cause for suspension or expulsion from school.

Madison’s 2017 James
Madison Foundation Fund-raising Calendar is now
available for $20 in Madi-son’s front office or from
one of the many student organizations featured in
the calendar. It is packed with Warhawk smiles,
featuring ASB, automotive, football, girl’s volleyball,
band, field hockey, cheer, JROTC, drama and much more.
There are even some throwback photos from the school’s 50+
years and a montage of selected yearbooks. The calendar is spon-
sored by local businesses includ-ing US Bank, Boomers, Kwik N’
Kleen, Pick Up Stix, Tony’s Gi-
ant Pizzeria, Havana Grill and Chili’s with coupon’s valid
through December 31, 2017. Proceeds raised from the calen-
dar benefit the student organiza-tions represented by the James
Madison Foundation, a non-profit 501 (c)(3). This is a great
way to support the clubs and organizations that make Madi-
son unique and support our stu-dent body. These make great
gifts for family and friends.

Free SAT Prep Offered Juniors can now sign up for a free 6-series Saturday workshop to prepare for the SAT. Ms. Ulbarri and Ms. Reeves will work with students on Saturday begin-ning on Saturday, January 21, 8 am to 12 pm. Students will learn strategies for understanding and answering questions; practice taking the exam, and sign up for t h e M a r c h 11 test. Students can sign up on
Madison’s website (space is lim-ited). The program is provided through Madison’s 21st Century ASSETS grant. The questions on the SAT focus on research-based, widely used words and phrases found in texts in college and in the workplace. The exam requires the command of evidence and requires stu-dents to analyze a series of sen-tences or paragraphs and ana-
lyze data. Students are also re-quired to interpret graphics and to edit passages to clearly and accurately communicate the in-formation. The exam uses linear equations, ratios, percentages, and proportional reasoning to solve problems in science, social science, and career related con-texts. Questions require multistep applications to solve problems.
There are over 100 different scholarships available with just one common application, availa-ble online, through the San Diego Foundation. There are also other scholarships on their website with different due dates that are not part of the common application. Seniors are encouraged to look at the Foundation’s website and
a p p l y a t h t t p s : / /www.sdfoundation.org. Seniors should leave enough time for the application process, as late appli-cations are not accepted. The deadline to apply is February 1, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Additional documents including official tran-scripts must be submitted online or mailed to the San Diego Foun-
dation. This is a great opportuni-ty to earn money for tuition and
books for 2- and 4-year colleges. Other scholarships are posted on Madison’s website and pub-lished in the “Show Me the Mon-ey” newsletter that is distributed bi-monthly to all seniors. Don’t procrastinate!

Yearbook Memories
Do you want your student to look back fondly
at his or her high school experience? Our
yearbook staff hopes that all Warhawks have
this opportunity. Last year, we nearly sold out
of our award-winning yearbook. The only way
to guarantee you will receive a yearbook is to
order by January 25, 2017. The yearbook is
$85 and can be purchased in Madison’s fi-
nance office, at lunch or after school, with
cash or check payable to Madison High
School, or order on-line with a credit card at
jostens.com (or you can use the link on the
Madison High School website). If you order on
-line, you can set up a payment plan. Direct
any questions to yearbook advisers, Lili
Reeves ([email protected]) or MaryAnn
Gross ([email protected]).
Speak Out for Safety
Students and parents are invited to use Stu-
dents Speaking Out to keep Madison High
School a safe environment for all! Students or
their parents can make anonymous tips to
report drugs, weapons, vandalism, fights,
thefts, or bullying. If your tip, or that of your
student, is positive you will receive a cash
reward up to $1,000. Posters with the three
ways to contact Students Speaking Out are
located in all classrooms, around the campus
and on Madison’s website! You can text,
email or call! Students Speaking Out also has
their own website: studentsspeakingout.org.
Please contact Officer K if you have any ques-
tions or need assistance with anything related
to crime, school safety, bullying or vandalism.
She is here to help.
Saturday School Dates
San Diego Unified School District permits
schools to conduct a “Saturday School” to
enable students to make up missed instruc-
tional days. Students who participate re-
ceive academic support to build academic
skills, make up class work, participate in
physical activities, and enjoy breakfast. Stu-
dents should arrive on time (8 a.m.), dressed
for changing weather conditions and in ap-
propriate attire for physical activity (no flip
flops or heels).
A breakfast meal is available for students
who attend. If your student is approved to
receive Free or Reduced Priced Meals, the
breakfast is available at no charge. If your
student pays for meals, please make sure
they have money in their cafeteria account to
cover the $1.00 cost of the breakfast. The
breakfast consists of cereal, graham crack-
ers, applesauce, raisins and milk. Click here
for upcoming Saturday school dates.
Senior Dates and Requirements
Senior presentations were recently conduct-
ed in government classes. Counselors met
with each senior to review their graduation
status and sent a letter home via US mail for
parent acknowledgement. Included in the
letter was graduation requirements, individu-
al student status, and upcoming Saturday
school dates to clear attendance. Ms. Pe-
ters, vice principal, presented the seniors
with a calendar of important senior dates
and the expectations for completing their
final year of high school. This critical infor-
mation is available to parents through their
school counselor.
Herff Jones, the supplier for graduation es-
sentials, including invitations and cap and
gown, visited Madison in October to provide
information to students and parents about
purchasing graduation announcements,
rings, letter jackets, etc. The district will rent
caps and gowns for seniors, which must be
returned after graduation in reusable condi-
tion to receive a diploma. The cap and tas-
sel is $20 if you intend to keep it. The dead-
line for ordering senior packages, cap and
gown and announcements from Herff Jones
was December 15. Limited quantities of
generic graduation announcements may still
be avai lable. Order directly at
www.sdgrad.com or call (619) 440-5426.
Interest free payments are available until
March 1, 2017 (a $75 deposit is required at
the time of purchase). Seniors have already
received an extensive packet of information
regarding these purchases.
