$3 billionS M A RT S P E N D I N G

Did you know that Canadian youth spent over $3 billion in 2005?

Many companies spend large amounts to convince young people to buy their

products. Some advertisements can make people feel they need those products to be happy. Are you being infl uenced by advertisements?

Be in control of your money by using these PowerPlay Spending Tips:

1. Know what you want.• Keep a list of things you would like to buy near your Spending Pot.• Decide what to buy and how much to spend before you go shopping.

2. Set goals and work towards them.• Write down what you want, how much it costs and when you’d like to buy it.• Whenever you get money, put some into a special Spending Pot for this goal.

3. Think for yourself.• Stick to your goals and don’t be swayed by ads.• Don’t buy something just because it’s a brand name or on sale.

Take action and be a smart spender.

Find the section for your age group to take the PowerPlay Challenge. You’ll fi nd details about your challenge, the prizes you can win and how to submit your entry. Good luck and have fun!

Entry deadline is December 15, 2006!
