THE MISSOURI COMPROMISE

In the 1819 Missouri Compromise, the first differences between the North and South over the expansion of slavery became apparent

Missouri had applied to be added to the Union as a slave state which the North opposed

The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state but also added Maine as a free state

This set a line that banned slavery in the Northern portion of the Louisiana Territory and set the stage for the conflict that would become the Civil War
