The War of 1812 featured the US again battling Britain for control in N. America
African Americans were once again offered freedom to enlist with the British
Also, the US initially refused to enlist blacks due to fear of slave revolt
THE WAR OF 1812
The first African American participation for the US came when the British invaded the Chesapeake area burning Washington D.C. and attacking Baltimore
This led to the development of a Black Brigade raised by Richard Allen, Absalom Jones and James Forten to protect Philadelphia
THE WAR OF 1812

THE WAR OF 1812

600 black troops fought under future President Andrew Jackson
He gave these troops equal pay and benefits
THE MISSOURI COMPROMISE
In the 1819 Missouri Compromise, the first differences between the North and South over the expansion of slavery became apparent
Missouri had applied to be added to the Union as a slave state which the North opposed
