WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS VS SYDNEY FC
KICKOFF: SATURDAY 7.45PM @ PIRTEK STADIUM | TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 7.45PM | RADIO: ABC LIVE 7.45PM
THE SECOND SYDNEY DERBY is here but fan violence and the clubs’ changing fortunes makes it a higher
stakes encounter this time around. Sydney FC approached the round three
derby with something close to dread after being fl ogged by Brisbane Roar in their previous match.
The Wanderers hadn’t had perfect results but were still riding high on a hugely successful debut season and strong support from a rabid fan base starting to make
a name for itself in the Sydney sporting landscape.
That match ended in a comprehensive two-nil Wanderers victory and the two teams couldn’t have been further apart in terms of confi dence, support and aspirations.
During the intervening 10 matches the Wanderers climbed to second on the competition ladder and looked poised to stake their claim for a second premiership.
But they have continually misfi red after
seemingly building momentum. As far as results go, the loss to Wellington Phoenix last week summed things up nicely. Losing at home to the second last placed side meant the good work in beating Central Coast Mariners and drawing away with Melbourne Victory during the compressed rounds over Christmas was undone.
Now the gap to the Roar at the top of the ladder has stretched to seven points. The form and style of the top two teams underlines rather than belies the current
points gap – the Wanderers are clearly off the pace compared to the league leaders.
Sydney FC have stabilised as well as anyone could have hoped after being dominated in the fi rst derby. Their results haven’t always been fl ashy but the team has put together some results and are now only four points behind their fellow Sydneysiders.
But by far the biggest change in the backdrop to this match has occurred off the pitch during the holiday season.
The Wanderers supporter group, Red and Black Bloc, has come under fi re for being involved in violent clashes with supporters of Melbourne Victory in the streets of Melbourne.
These horrible actions coincided with a focus on alcohol-fuelled violence in the Sydney media over the holiday season, consequently the A-League and clubs were pressured to take action, if necessary, to ensure games take place in a safe environment.
Wanderers management has stated they support removing the violent minority elements from the game. Victory – in perhaps a cunning PR move, depending on where you sit – asked the league to clarify arrangements for fans travelling to the next AAMI Park match between the sides, putting blame at the feet of the Wanderers without actually saying it.
Further media pressure backed A-League management into a corner and they
controversially declared competition points may be deducted if supporters are violent.
There has been a fl urry of educated guesstimating as to whether such action could successfully curb violent behaviour.
Wanderers right back, Jerome Polenz voiced his opinion on Twitter, declaring it a poor move and asking, “where does it start and where does it end?” if the points-stripping precedent is set.
A smooth performance on the pitch and a loud but incident free experience off it will
be the hope for Wanderers and A-League supporters.
A derby always brings with it extra bragging rights on top of competition points, a loud crowd and electric atmosphere.
Now there is the added stakes of resenting a proud but mature club, able to cultivate a passionate fan base without harbouring violent individuals.
Competition points could be added – or lost – this weekend.

FOOTBALL GAMES DON’T GET much bigger than the famous Sydney Derby, and after a worrying past couple of
weeks, the Western Sydney Wanderers will be using this Saturday’s clash at Pirtek Stadium to get their season back on track.
After a win, draw and a big 3-1 loss to the Wellington Phoenix over their last three games, a Sydney Derby couldn’t have come at a better time for the Wanderers to set
themselves up for what’s set to be a huge second half of the season.
“It’s the game everyone looks for when the draw comes out,” Wanderers striker Mark Bridge said at training on Tuesday.
“It’s set to be a big one. I’m sure everyone will be raring to go and the crowd is going to be massive.”
Wanderers coach Tony Popovic agreed, declaring form coming into a Derby match
doesn’t come into contention because there is so much rivalry at stake.
“However Sydney FC are going or however we are going it’s irrespective for this game,” he said.
“If we look at the Derby coming up, from my experience form goes out the window and I’m sure it’ll be a very passionate aff air. These games are special.”
Popovic said he doesn’t need to gear up his players for a match against Sydney FC because the passion and hatred for each other is already present.
“I don’t think you need to go into much detail for this game, it’s an easy game for
both sides to get motivated for,” he said.“Derbies are special and everyone wants
to be a part of it whether you are an administrator, player, staff , coach or the fans, it’s a special day and it should be.
“The rivalry is getting bigger and better. You can feel it in the stands and on the fi eld… the rivalry is building. It’s great to have two Sydney teams and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to it.”
Popovic said the club is experiencing no injury concerns and will have a full squad to choose from for the clash.
“It’ll be tough to pick a team,” he admitted on Tuesday.

ADAM PEACOCK PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY YOUR LOCAL MCDONALD ’S STORES
ADAM Peacock is a respected sports journalist who is currently part of the Fox Sports team covering the 2013/14 A-League season
DAVID GALLOP SURE PICKED an interesting time to go on holidays.
The FFA boss slipped away for his festive recharge and literally, all hell broke loose. The scenes of December 28 in Melbourne have been talked about, written about, debated, dissected and acted upon.
It should serve as a brutal reminder about what football wants to be and how it is to grow.
Gallop’s statement that football is an “unstoppable force” on the eve of Christmas was bold. Some say ridiculous.
Various people have seized upon those words as basis for their long-held belief football is not a mainstream player in Australian society.
Personally, I think the timing could have been better – we were half way through an Ashes series in which the Australian cricket team was returning to glory years.
It is that sport’s World Cup, basically, and Australia was returning to a rightful place. Everyone loves a winner.
I’ll twist the words this way – the context, for mine, is about the fact football in this country is here to stay. Never again will we not have a professional league. Always, when the Socceroos play on the big stage, will the nation pay attention as one. Those are the big things to have changed in the past decade. Unstoppable? Yep.
Only the idiotic actions of a small minority will disrupt it.
How much is entirely up to those involved in the game, led by the FFA who need an entire review on game day fan relations, especially those at the forefront, security.
But as pointed out every time something goes a little off centre in the sport, football needs to just worry about what football does. At the halfway point, crowds are up 1,500 on last season’s average.
The standard of football hasn’t improved this season, but what is to be expected when the best two coaches at the centre of pushing the A-League forward, Ange Postecoglou and Graham Arnold depart?
Those two are the key indicators on this process of building the game. Not to take over cricket, rugby league, AFL – who cares,
they are by-products. It’s about building the game so those who love it in this country have got something to enjoy, invest their time and emotions in, and make it a part of their lives.
And it is a measured, deliberate build, not a throw it up quickly, whiz bang crash wallop, ta-daaa, and hope for the best. Sustained growth is the key to any successful business and if you want to get all deep and meaningful, relationship.
The time that will take isn’t measured in years or decades, but generations.
Anyway this Saturday night, there’s a Derby. Western Sydney, Sydney FC.
The foundations on which this sustained growth should be built on.
Sustained growth is key to future success

KEEP ING UP W ITH COV IC
GOAL keeper ANTE Covic gives us a player’s perspective on the Western Sydney Wanderers
FIRSTLY, WHILE WANDERWORLD WAS taking a summer break I was happy to sign a brand new one-year deal with the
Western Sydney Wanderers for next season. It was always my intention to stay on at the club. Our fi rst year together was fantastic and this year has been incredible too. The club has the potential to be the biggest club in Australia. It’s a place I’m very comfortable at, I like how the club is run and discussions with Popa (pictured) early on were always going to be based on my performances. As long as I had the will to keep playing and the ambition I was always in line for an extension. Popa true to his word off ered me a contract and for me it was an easy decision.
The last three games have been a bit of a mixed bag for the club. We started off very well against Central Coast, we dominated and deservedly won. Against Melbourne, we put in a fantastic performance which is never
easy to do down there. We played a very good game but to get that sucker punch in the dying seconds was bitter sweet. Last week against Phoenix at home was very disappointing. It was our worst performance since we formed as a team and I think we thought the game was just a matter of showing up and going through the motions. We found out very harshly that no matter what team you come up against you can get punished. It was a big lesson learnt from us and it’s something that won’t be happening again too soon.
I think there’s no better way to get back on track this weekend than against Sydney FC. To win the three points this weekend will be like icing on a cake. There’s always a buzz and feeling, especially for the supporters, surrounding this game. The players want the bragging rights afterwards as well that we’re the number one team in Sydney. You don’t want your neighbours getting on top of you.
A lesson learned

LAST WEEK ’S ACT ION
PHOENIX 3 WANDERERS 1
AFTER BEING LEFT STUNNED by a last minute free kick against Melbourne Victory, the Wanderers were looking
to bounce back and secure three points against an in-form Phoenix at Pirtek Stadium. A few weeks ago this fi xture would’ve looked an easy one for the Wanderers; though recent weeks have seen the Phoenix hit another gear with two wins in a row, and the men from Wellington had every right to be confi dent looking for their third straight win. Wanderers coach Tony Popovic again drastically altered his squad as part of his rotation policy, with the season also taking its toll on the Phoenix with key men Paul Ifi ll and Carlos Hernandez ruled out with injury.
Even though both sides were on diff erent ends of the ladder coming into this one, the gulf in class was nonexistent and it was clear the Phoenix weren’t content on sitting back and letting the Wanderers dictate proceedings. However, the Wanderers did squander a couple of good early chances as Bridge headed over and Aaron Mooy’s volley troubled Glen Moss but neither could
fi nd the breakthrough. The Wanderers’ best chance came on the brink of half-time when Shinji Ono’s brilliant header appeared goal-bound, only to strike the underside of the crossbar.
The marquee man did make amends just after the hour-mark with his involvement in a spectacular three-way move involving Hersi and Bridge, with the latter fi nishing the move with a delicate chip over the advancing Glen Moss. The majority of 14,151 fans expected the Wanderers to kill the game off at that point, though uncharacteristically their side seemed to relax and let their lead slip barely fi ve minutes later.
Things went from bad to worse for the Wanderers, as the Phoenix weren’t done yet with the impressive Huysegems out-muscling Aaron Mooy before curling a shot in the far corner to send the travelling support into raptures.
The second goal seemed to have shocked the hosts completely, and the two partners in crime Boyd and Huysegems combined again for Wellington’s third to put an exclamation mark on the biggest upset of the season.

LUKE PRIDDIS
DURING THE SUMMER BREAK the Wanderers announced two key re-signings. Goalkeeper and
Wanderworld columnist Ante Covic and striker Shannon Cole have put pen to paper with the club for a further year and two years, respectively. Wanderers coach Tony Popovic was delighted to have the two players extend with the club. “It’s great news for the club and great news for our fans as well. Ante has been fantastic for us in goals and we’re delighted that he’s continuing on. Shannon has certainly shown his versatility for the team. He came into a position he hasn’t played in while Youssouf (Hersi) was out and has shown how versatile he has been for this football club and we’re delighted that both players will be with us here next year”.
The Western Sydney Wanderers National Youth League side almost produced one of the comebacks of the season but in the end went down to the Newcastle Jets 4-3 last Sunday. The Wanderers were down 4-1 but scored two late goals in the second half to make the fi nal score more respectable. Western Sydney’s goals came courtesy of Nic Olsen (77’), Jake McGing (90’) and Sean Symons (92’). The Wanderers sit in fi fth spot and will play Perth Glory this Sunday.
The Wander Women have failed to take advantage of a strong fi rst half by falling to the Melbourne Victory 2-0 in the W-League. It’s fair to say the Wanderers had their chances in this one but weren’t able to
capitalise when the opportunity presented itself. The result sees the Wanderers outside of the top four but with three matches in eight days coming up, a fl urry of points will launch them back into the title race. The Wanderers play Adelaide United this Saturday and Sydney FC on Wednesday.
This week’s Wanderers super fans are Nicole Thompson and Dale Hughes! Dale is a foundation fan and a dedicated member of the RBB who follows the team around the country. Dale’s partner Nicole said she is also a passionate Wanderers fan: “I join Dale on the marches and behind the goals with the RBB and make sure I keep up with all of the chanting and singing 100 per cent of the time. My jersey was an anniversary present!” If you would like to be pictured in my column, simply send a pic of yourself in your Wanderers gear to [email protected].
Despite a huge New Year’s Eve celebration the night before I did manage to rock up to the Wanderers versus Phoenix game on New Year’s Day, and I must say I’m still being let down by Pirtek Stadium’s audio system. Even though I had a whinge about this a few months ago, nothing has been done about it. I don’t know whether it’s the speakers that haven’t been upgraded since 1986 when the Parramatta Eels won their last premiership or if someone in the production box misplaced the dial on the audio control. Someone get it fi xed, please! It’s frustrating and really ruins much of the atmosphere.
