President’s Letter Driving through the country to a not-so-far away location where we just purchased a camper that stays

in a wooded campground, I marveled at the homes along the way, which were far & few between each

other. They were lovely. Some were old style country homes, some more modern, but none compared

to ours. They had yards the side of football fields which must take an entire Saturday to mow &

shopping areas were quite a drive away. We enjoyed a nice short weekend at the camper, but I must

say I could hardly wait to get back to the comforts of my own home. As I returned, I felt content again.

Not that the camper didn’t give me peace, I just find such solace at home & in our neighborhood. As I

thanked my neighbors for watching the house & feeding the cats, I wondered what the folks in the

country do when they go away. The camaraderie I feel from having my neighbors close by fills my heart

with friendship. I enjoy folks popping in or the last minute invites to cook outside together, or just the

friendly folks that walk by & say hello. I have lived in the country in the past & never knew what I

missed until I came to live here in the city. I feel a part of a community, part of the “bigger picture” & a

sense of belonging here. I know that both sides (country & city) have its forte, but I am still trilled, after

all these years, to be a part of this neighborhood.

I hope everyone was able to vote in the June 24th

Primary elections. Waltherson took part in the event

at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church to hear our candidates

pitch their ideas for our City Government. I hope you

found it helpful. I had planned to attend but got very

sick for the last 2 weeks. It really took my energy.

Take care, Helene

Upcoming Traffic/Roadwork Projects DOT updates:

The reconfiguration of Frankford intersections at Hamilton Ave & Corse Ave have been postponed due to funding issues.

The markings of the bike lane on southbound Walther Ave at Parkside will be changing to prevent southbound traffic from utilizing the bike lane.

They are reviewing the pattern of southbound Walther Ave where the road narrows at Frankford.

They are looking into whether there is funding to resurface the 5400 block of Pembroke Ave this year

We are waiting on results from the following requests: o Traffic Calming on Holder Ave between Echodale Ave and Southern Ave o Traffic Calming on Ailsa Ave between Harford Road and Holder Ave

In the past concerns were raised that speeding concerns still exist for Southern Ave despite the installation of Speed Humps. Traffic Studies show that speeds on the road show it still warrants calming.

o If there is interest in pursuing this or requesting traffic enforcement by the police, please let us know by e-mailing [email protected] or write us at P.O. Box 3622 Baltimore MD 21214.

IN AND AROUND WALTHERSON

Tuesday Market

Come out to the Tues Farmer’s Market across from Safeway is EVERY Tues from 4-8pm. Many folks walk up, get dinner, buy some fresh veggies or crafts, or just chat with your neighbors.

TreeKeepers TreeKeepers is a city-wide tree stewardship program and open to anyone interested in Baltimore's trees. TreeKeepers promotes healthy trees by educating residents and increasing their role in the care of the City's trees. Through this training, citizens can become tree advocates and share the responsibility to plant and care for trees in their neighborhood and throughout the City.

Baltimore Orchard Project

Thousands of pounds of fruit fall to the ground each year around our neighborhoods all across Baltimore, yet many in our community go hungry or lack access to fresh healthy foods each day. The Baltimore Orchard Project wants to help change this situation and we want your participation. We only ask that you respond to the questionnaire bellow and be willing to donate some of your fruits to the project. We'll do the rest!

Block Captains We’ve mentioned this in past newsletters & will continue to develop this concept. Since we are a small group, we need your help. If we utilize block captains as resources, we build a stronger team in all segments of the area. People would go directly to the block captains for their concerns. These would be filtered out, utilizing the resources & contact we have. Each block captain would have a list of contacts & then report back to the entire group & to the executive board. If everyone pitches in, we can all do our part. Please, find something that is your passion. Maybe gardening is your thing, maybe vacant houses really annoys you, maybe you want to help a neighbor whose house needs some repairs. Whatever be the case, if we all do our part, we can help each other.

Styrofoam / Polystyrene Recycling

If you want to recycle Styrofoam but cannot make it to the sanitation yard, Waltherson member Louise Harmony has offered to drop it off. Please get in touch with Robert Walshe at a meeting or by e-mailing us at [email protected] if you are interested. You can also leave a message for us on Facebook or tweet us @WalthersonAssoc. Note: CHECK THE BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER FOR A NUMBER 6. Only number 6 items are accepted. No peanuts or packing material.

NECOP – Northeast Citizens on Patrol In Northeast Baltimore we have a district wide Citizens on Patrol program called NECOP. The reasoning behind the COP program is that regular neighborhood patrols can make criminals feel uncomfortable and drive them out of our neighborhood. Participants meet at the Northeast Police station at 1900 Argonne Drive near Morgan State and get a walkie talkie to keep them in contact with the Police and then proceed to patrol their neighborhoods in their cars. Patrols normally go out each Thursday and Friday from about 7:30 - 10:30. For anyone interested in the Citizens on Patrol program, please contact Rob at [email protected].

Hamilton-Lauraville (HL) Sprouts

There’s a new family group in town. HL Sprouts is a parent partnership designed to allow parents of kids aged 0-12 to meet up, arrange play dates, and get to know other parents in the area. They are a chapter of the Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance. Check them out, there are several kid-friendly meet ups going on each week in the area. https://www.facebook.com/groups/HLSprouts/

The History of Milton Terraces If you live or travel in our neighborhood between Harford Road and Walther Ave, it may interest you that around this time 90 years ago Milton Ross Lerch would have been busy developing these homes. On December 23rd 1923, and April 3rd, May 11th, and August 8th 1924 the Baltimore Sun noted the filing of the plans for our homes with the building inspector which you can see in the attached clippings. You'll notice a street named Beechwood in the clippings, which was later renamed to Ailsa Ave. Ross Road and Lerch Drive bear Milton's middle and last names and, while mostly long forgotten, the development bore his first name as Milton Terraces when it was originally advertised (see clipping from August 24 1924 attached to this post). Mr. Lerch also had a hand in building the bungalows along Walther just south of Echodale Ave, that stretch of roadway, originally called Lerchwood, also bore his name along with another developer, C. Edgar Wood (reference: Baltimore Sun article "The Man in the Street" December 31, 1950). Also, you'll notice Mr. Lerch had an office at 4337 Harford Road which is now the Red Canoe.
