Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:
Welcome to the 2016-17 school year at Walt Morey Middle School, home of the awesome Mustangs! It
was wonderful to see so many of our new and returning students last week at registration, when close to
500 families come through. If you have not yet had a chance to register for the 2016-17 school year, our
office is open. We welcome you any time between 7 am and 3 pm.
Before we begin the school year, I would like to introduce you to our new assistant principal, Gerardo
Ibarra Elola. Gerardo joins us most recently from Reynolds High School where he worked as an assistant
principal for one year. He also comes to us with a long history in Woodburn and Florida as an
administrator, school psychologist, school counselor, special education coordinator, and English language
development teacher. I have really enjoyed getting to know Gerardo this summer, and I know you will
enjoy the support he will provide to the students and families at Walt Morey.
We have also hired a few new teachers during the summer. Suzanne Chimenti will be teaching choir,
Hannah Vowell will be teaching 7th Grade Math and Science, as well as 6th grade Math Intervention.
Chelsea Butterfield will be teaching 8th Grade Language Arts and Social Studies, and finally, Christine
Putnam will be our Speech Pathologist. We are still in the process of hiring a leadership teacher to replace
Barb Lim, who has just recently accepted a position at Reynolds High School.
Of course the biggest change you will need to be aware of this year is the change in bell schedule from a
Wednesday early release to a Monday late start. Every Monday school will begin at 8:40 am. This schedule
allows for teachers to receive professional development and collaborate with other teachers on common
assessments and best instructional practice. The late start bell schedule was provided last week at
registration and is also included in this newsletter.
As you are preparing for the start of the school year, please remember to check out our school supplies list
and binder requirement. We want to make sure that all students begin the school year well prepared. Until
then, enjoy your last few weeks of summer. We look forward to meeting all of our new 6th graders on
September 7th, welcoming back our 7th and 8th graders on September 8th, and to meeting with all of our
families at our Open House on September 22.
It’s going to be a great year!

15 de agosto del año 2016
Estimados padres, guardianes y estudiantes:
Realmente he disfrutado conocer a Gerardo
