Principal’s News School Motto In 1964, our school held a competition to design a badge and motto, with the prize being One Pound (equivalent to $2). John Shearer won the competition using the colours black, white and green. His design forms the basis of the school’s present day badge. The motto is “Onward with Honour”. On parade this week, I have invited students to consider what “Onward with Honour” means and consider its continuing relevance for us in 2019. I look forward to students being able to reflect on this and share their opinions Cobb and Co Event On Monday 19 August, our students will be invited to go to the Wallumbilla Showgrounds and to “step back in time” as they experience first-hand an early mode of transport. The Yuleba Development Group will bring a 12 strong bullock team and wagon to Wallumbilla and students will be given an information session on what things used to be like in the “good old days”, as well as given a ride on the bullock wagon. This Cobb and Co Festival celebrates the 95th anniversary of the last regular mail coach which ran in 1924 from Surat to Yuleba….an exciting event to celebrate locally. Responsible Behaviour Management Plan In Semester 2, our school will be inviting feedback from students, staff and parents as we review of our Responsible Behaviour Management Plan. To ensure that we effectively review our behaviour management practices, we are seeking representative input from staff, students and parents. Our Student Council will be invited to present the student “voice” and parents are sincerely invited to join our staff sub-committee, which will meet (tentatively timetabled day – Wednesday afternoons 3.10-4.00pm) during Term 3. Please consider either joining our BM subcommittee or attending P&C meetings for further opportunities to be actively involved in this BM review. Staff Update This term we welcome Mrs Howse, Mr Forrester and Miss Clunes back to our school. All of these teachers have been associated with us in various roles in the past and we are extremely pleased that they will re-join us again for Semester 2. Mrs Richardson has completed her acting role in Roma and has now accepted another acting role in Kingaroy for Semester 2. Ms Schofield, now Mrs Muller, has commenced her additional education studies. Mrs York has now returned to having a family/property focus (although I am sure she will still be a regular visitor in our school providing TRS). We provided a new timetable to students this week and this replaces the draft that had been tentatively written/distributed at the end of Term 2. Emergency Evacuation Each term, our school undertakes an evacuation as a precautionary practice drill. The purpose is to have staff and students (and any visitors) immediately undertake the actions aligned to the type of evacuation, being undertaken. In the near future, we will hold a “lock down” where we will practice what we would need to do should a hostile situation or emergency occur. School Website At the last P&C meeting, discussions took place as to how we can respond proactively to suggestions made by our school community. One suggestion was that we use our school website and have more accurate and more current information available to our parents. Thank you to Mrs Tash Swan who is willing to update and monitor information to everyone via this platform. We will upload our newsletter each fortnight to this site as well as any other communications going home to parents. We encourage parents to “take a look” in coming weeks, after we get ourselves organised from the school end. I also invite parents to advise the school office if you would prefer to receive emails each fortnight electronically rather than through hard copy. This would provide a more effective means for parents to receive these newsletters (as well as reduce our carbon footprint). ** Please note: any documents containing student details may have be amended prior to uploading to maintain effective cyber safety. ** Road Safety Concerns At our last WH&S meeting, an issue was raised about the possibility of a child being injured whilst crossing the road at the close of the school day. This is a very busy period with lots of vehicles arriving and departing as children are collected. Our school staff have been asked to park on the northern side of High street, and “free up” the parking directly outside our school entrance. I hope that this should provide adequate parking for our parents (and other visitors to our school) as well as minimise the need for students to cross the road in High Street. Students crossing the road on Chadford Street are reminded to always cross at the designated road crossing. School Opinion Surveys It is now the time of year when staff, students and parents are invited to give our school feedback as to the effectiveness of our routines and practices as part of the School Opinion Survey. the survey questions. I will endeavour to make contact with all parents at some time during the survey period to remind them to complete this (the greater number of parents who complete this survey will result in a more accurate response) Leading Literacy Program Mrs Dickson, Miss Howland and I are participating in a 6 month program being offered by QELi (Queensland Education Leadership Institute) whereby we will be using the processes attached to reading to focus on and to adopt focused school wide strategies to improve student comprehension skills. We attended the introductory sessions last term, and were so excited that we met up during the holidays to “map out” the way that we can be active in our school promoting both the Big Six as well as explicitly emphasising comprehension strategies. For parents who are interested, we encourage you to ‘Google’ Dr Desley Konza and look for the Big Six (Oral Language; Phonological and Phonemic Awareness; Phonics; Fluency; Vocabulary; and, Comprehension) Reading Comprehension On parade last week, I spoke to students about importance of preparing for reading so that they already have a “head start” to understanding what the book might be about, before even turning the first page. This is called Activating Prior Knowledge and there are many good strategies that teachers use before students commence reading activities in class. This week I made reference to the importance of being able to Self-Monitor…which is what I do when I read at night and I know that nothing is “sinking in” - it really is time to stop reading and instead turn the light out. Year 9/10 Leadership Camp Our students have been invited to join with Mitchell State School and attend a Leadership Program being offered from Monday 26-Friday 30 August at Noosa North Shore. Information will be sent home to parents and we will be seeking to “firm” up prices and attending staff and students ASAP so that we can liaise with Mr Jeremy Heslop who is organising this camp on behalf of both schools. NAIDOC Surat Aboriginal Corp joined us on Tuesday afternoon and all our students participated in rotational sporting activities that were offered. We thank Ms Howland for organising and the SAC ladies who provided the games (and prizes for the colouring in competition). Enjoy your fortnight Regards Julie

Student Late and Early Departure Process Please note: For students who are late or require an early departure from school, the process is that students need to be signed in or out through the office by way of the sign in/out register by a parent/guardian. Rolls are marked twice daily by teachers at 8.55am and 1.30pm, however after these times administration staff are responsible for entering student late arrivals or early departures from the register. Can we please make sure we have parent’s follow these procedures, to ensure that teachers are focused on maintaining quality instruction during class time.

100km Running Club

The 100km Club is running until the end of Week 5. All students

who are consistently participating each week are well on track

to achieving their own personal 100km of running. So far, 4

students have achieved the 100kms. Well done students.

State Cross Country Championships

As one of the South West Managers, I accompanied Dylan O

Student Update

Recently I made the Central Queensland Crow’s team and on

the holidays travelled to compete at the under 14’s State

Championships on the Sunshine Coast. Our team had a draw

and lost three of their games by two points against Brisbane,

Gold Coast and a Cairns/Townsville.

Over 2 weeks, that included the last week of Term 2 and the first week of school holidays, I attended the State National Championships of school boy’s rugby league playing with the under 15’s Queensland White’s side. The team went into camp on the Tuesday though to Saturday. This was held at Alexandra Headlands and then we travelled by bus back to Redcliffe, where the carnival was held from the Sunday to Friday. The White’s team was in pool A and played against ACT then NSW (AIS), but narrowly missing the semi-finals. To decide the overall position the White’s team played two other games to finish up overall in 4th in front of our fellow Queensland Maroon’s team. Bragging rights for us! This was a great experience which was extremely fulfilling to not only learn more about footy and to improve but make new friends as well. Matt Y

NAIDOC Week Celebrations A time to thank the Surat Aboriginal Corporation

On the second day of Term 3, students and staff participated in an array of activities to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to celebrate and to support local

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Surat Aboriginal Corporation (SAC) Cultural & Capability Officer and Manager, Jess Walsh, began proceedings by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we met, the Mandandanji people, and by paying respect to Elders, past, present and future. With formalities over, we broke into groups and rotated through activities that included Indigenous games with Jess, a colouring-in competition with SAC’s Children & Schooling Officer, Chloe Cleven, and storytelling and a Q&A session with Ms Marie Kelly, Indigenous Service Officer with the Department of Human Services. Established in 2000, the SAC was originally founded to preserve a permanent record of the lives, history, traditions and culture of Aboriginal people in the Surat district, including the Mandandanji, the traditional owners. Jess’s wonderful mother, Angie Walsh, achieved this goal and very much more before she so sadly passed away in September last year. Under Angie’s and now Jess’s stewardship, SAC has become a much-loved community organisation. The team tirelessly delivers wonderful programs for all children - in our school, in the

Wallumbilla and Yuleba communities more widely, and across the whole Maranoa region. Students and staff would like to thank Jess, Chloe and Marie for helping to make NAIDOC Week 2019 a fun, shared, informative and a very special celebration for us. Chess Club

Chess Club recommenced in Week 1 and we have been having some great challenging games, as individuals and teams, with students from various classes attending. Students have been learning new rules each week and building resilience when they don't always win! We look forward to many more games this term. Chess Club occurs on a Tuesday at lunch time, all staff and students are welcome to attend.
