    Define:

Often during experiments or in the industrythere is a very small margin of error. Some ofthat error is due to the environmental

conditions or inherent in the procedure which

we cannot control. The other part is due tohuman error and errors in the system. Theseerrors lie within our control and can be

eliminated if the proper measures are taken

otherwise the measurements can besignicantly inaccurate which is obviouslyundesirable.

    Precautions

These precautions are necessary to minimizeany errors which can aect the accuracy ofthe measurement. n this article we will list a

few important things which should be

considered while using a vernier caliper formeasurement.

The most common form of error associated

with measuring instruments is the parallaxerror. Parallax is a term which originates from

the "reek word #parallaxis$ which means

    #alteration$.

%arallax error occurs when an ob&ect is observed

from an angle. This makes the ob&ect appearat a slightly dierent position than it really is

and can lead us to take a wrong reading on ameasuring scale. To eliminate this error theobserver should position his eyes directly

above the scale when taking the 'ain Scalereading and the (ernier )oincidence.

)are should be taken that all readings takenduring the measurement are in the same unitsystem. e.g. '*S system which uses the unitsmeter+ kilogram and second for measurement

of length+ weight and time. ,nother fre-uentlyused system is the )"S system which usesthe units of centimeter+ gram and second. f

any measurements are taken in a unit in

another system it should be converted to theappropriate units before being used in anycalculations.

hile gripping the ob&ect to be measured+application of excessive force on the &awsshould be avoided. The ob&ect should alwaysbe gripped gently between the &aws. This is

extremely important while measuring ob&ectswhich are easily deformable e.g. wires.

/efore taking any measurements+ make surethe vernier caliper does not have a zero error. This can be checked by bringing the &aws of

the caliper in contact with each other. The

zero markings on the vernier scale and themain scale should align at this point. f notthen there is a zero error and the appropriate

    corrections should be applied.

The surface of the ob&ect which needs to bemeasured should be cleaned and dried with acloth soaked in cleaning oil.

The same should be done with the instrumentcover.

The lower &aws should be opened slightly andtheir inner surface should be cleaned anddried with a cloth gently. This should berepeated with the upper &aws as well.

0oosen the locking key of the vernier caliperand make sure there is no friction betweenthe scales while moving the &aws of the

    vernier caliper.

In the case of a digital vernier caliper

the following additional steps should betaken:

/ring the &aws in contact with each other and

then press the on1o button. )heck thereading and make sure it is zero.

'ove the slider and check whether all thebuttons and the 0)2 display are working

    properly.
