EDITION 6, 2015 Waikerie Lutheran Primary School Foundation News I cannot believe that Term 3 is already half over. The children have certainly had a jam packed term full of acvies. Some of the acvies have been presenng Chapel, the Bash cars coming through, Bookfair and an excursion to look at houses in our community. This week we will celebrate Book Week, experience a Questacon visit and we are looking forward to concert. I am proud of the children and their achievements this term. I have seen fantasc improvements in their reading and wring and the development of deeper thinking skills. Ask your child to talk to you about the iceberg (lazy thinking and deep thinking). On Thursday, 10th September

This workshop will focus on what is particular to the Foundation classroom using the THRASS approach.

A large part of THRASS at this level is phonemic awareness.

Come along and see how you can support your child in their phonics, writing, reading and spelling.

UOI— “Home Sweet Home”

We began by investigating our own homes and the homes within our community. As we progress in the UOI we are beginning to connect the different homes with the characteristics and culture of countries around the world. We are embarking on our summative assessment task for this unit before beginning our next unit on Recycling.

Numeracy We have had a number focus so far this term. I encourage you to continue to practice number stories to 10 and thinking about what goes with a number to make 10 (rainbow numbers). Money has been another focus, and children are familiarising themselves with the Australian currency system. I also encourage you to allow your child handle money and talk about it with them. You could even pretend to play shops and get them to give you the right coin or note for an item. We will be looking at shapes (both 2D and 3D shapes) in the coming weeks. I wonder how many different 2D shapes you can find in your house? What objects in your house are in the shape of a sphere, cube, cylinder, prism and pyramid? The challenge is to see how many you can find with your child.

Student Led Conferences Please note that on Thursday 17th September, we will be conducting Student Led Conferences at the school. All students will be involved in this as a compulsory part of their reporting to parents. Student Led Conferences is where parents are invited into the classroom to allow your child to communicate their learning to you, sharing their understandings and goals. A note has gone in the school newsletter this week with a sheet outlining options for you to select suitable times. Those who return their selection forms promptly will be more likely to receive their chosen times. A note will go home in Week 8 notifying you of your allocated time.

Environmental Investigation

Environmental Investigation has been such a ‘hit’ with the class. Children have taken opportunities to work together to build constructions and play areas, solve problems and negotiating to achieve as a group. Imagination, testing hypotheses, role playing, discovery and language development is typical of a morning of learning while being in touch with nature.
