WADESTOWN SCHOOL
Community Newsletter
Principal: Sally Barrett Website: www.wadestown.school.nz Thursday 24 May, 2018
Dear Parents A warm welcome to the following new students and their families who have joined us recently at Wadestown School:
George McKeown (Rm 2), Sofia Robinson (Rm 2) and Simone Kelly (Rm2).
Book Week 21st – 25th May We are having a fantastic week at Wadestown School celebrating Book Week. Our wonderful Librarian Derek Piper has
organised our famous Book Week including competitions and quizzes for all year groups. Thank you from us all Derek.
As you can see from the photos below lots of creativity was on display at the first of our Book Character Parades at Weld
Street. We are looking forward to tomorrow’s Book Parade at Rose Street starting at 9.00 am. We will have more great
photos of the parade to share with you all in our next School Community Newsletter. The Book Fair has been so well
attended each day this week and many thanks to Annabel Butterfield and her team of helpers for their support of this
initiative.
Congratulations to Nicki Greer Congratulations to our Year 7 & 8 Teacher Nicki Greer who has been awarded the Marie Clay Early
Careers Literacy Trust Award. The late Marie Clay was a New Zealand psychologist who developed
the Reading Recovery Intervention Programme in New Zealand and expanded this programme
worldwide. The award Nicki has won is part of Marie Clay’s personal bequest that enables
teachers to learn more about the specialist field of Literacy. Part of Nicki’s award will provide the
funds for her to attend the New Zealand literacy Association Conference in October.
Congratulations from us all Nicki, we are very proud of your well-deserved award.
Toastmasters Leadership Graduation - Wednesday 16th of May
Last week the Year 8 students had their Toastmasters Graduation ceremony. The night started off with the
Toastmasters Teachers receiving their thank you cards and gift to show our appreciation on behalf of all the
Year 8 students. The Impromptu Speeches came next and each speech was interesting and entertaining and
the students did a great job with their presentation. Then everyone split off into three groups (Room 13, the
Library and the Hall) to listen to the Prepared Speeches. The variety of speech topics made them great to listen
to and the parents were an awesome audience. The students have worked really hard on the Toastmasters
course held over the past ten weeks and it was really cool to see it all come together on graduation night.
Overall it was a very enjoyable evening for both speech givers and the audience.

News from the Student Council – Skate Night for Year 5-8 Students Over the past few weeks, the Heads of Student Council have collaborated with the Wheels Team in organising
a Skate Night for Year 5-8 students. The event will take place on the Friday 15th of June at Kilbirnie Recreation
Centre. The Year 5-6 students’ session will be from 5.30-7.00pm and the Year 7-8 students’ session from 7.30-
9.00pm. Notices went out last week and since then we have been selling lots of tickets. We would like ticket
sales to be completed by Friday 25 May so make sure your money ($5 admission and $3.50 to hire roller
blades/skates) plus permission slips are handed in by then please!
On the night the Wheels Team will be running obstacle courses, floorball and lots more fun and games. While
all this is happening there will still be lots of space for free skating. There will also be cool prizes and a table of
food. Please don’t forget to bring your food (Tui and Kotare) or drink (Ruru and Kereru)! The purpose of Skate
Night is for the students to have a fun social night with their friends, so please come along to our very first
Skate Night!
