WADESTOWN SCHOOL Community Newsletter Principal: Sally Barrett Website: www.wadestown.school.nz Thursday 15 March, 2018 Dear Parents A warm welcome to the following new students and their families who have joined us recently at Wadestown School: Willow Linton (Rm 2), Sophia Green (Rm 16), Lucy Turnbull (Rm 5), Hope Turnbull (Rm13) Matthew Huynh (Rm 2), Ariana Huynh (Rm 2), and Jack Crutchley (Rm2). Education Outside the Classroom Programme at Wadestown School This term is a very special one for our Year 5 – 8 students as they take part in EOTC Camp experiences. The interactions that take place while students are involved in learning outside the classroom are rich opportunities for implementing many aspects of the New Zealand Curriculum. The experiences students have together beyond the classroom are important not only because of the learning that occurs for each individual student but also for the shared experience that teachers can draw on afterwards for further learning opportunities. At Wadestown School we believe that our camp experiences in Term One also play a very important role in the implementation of our Leadership Programme particularly in the Year 7 and 8 area of the school. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff who so willingly plan and organise their student’s camp experience. This involves much time and effort outside school hours to ensure that the week runs smoothly and the students have an experience that they will remember positively for years to come. I would also like to thank the wonderful group of volunteer parents who offer to attend camp and assist the teaching staff. Your help is greatly appreciated and our school camps could not take place without you. The Year 1 – 4 students in the Pohutukawa and Rata Teams have also enjoyed their Education Outside the Classroom trips to Te Wharewaka on the Wellington waterfront. Our students were welcomed with a Mihi Whakatau (formal welcome) and farewelled with Poroaki (thank you). Students replied by singing a waiata and giving a mihi before participating in a variety of activities which included learning to paddle in a waka, Maori weaving and storytelling. What a wonderful experience for all our Year 1 – 4 students to remember.

Dear Parents A warm welcome to the following new students and their families who have joined us recently at Wadestown

School: Willow Linton (Rm 2), Sophia Green (Rm 16), Lucy Turnbull (Rm 5), Hope Turnbull (Rm13) Matthew

Huynh (Rm 2), Ariana Huynh (Rm 2), and Jack Crutchley (Rm2).

Education Outside the Classroom Programme at Wadestown School This term is a very special one for our Year 5 – 8 students as they take part in EOTC Camp experiences. The

interactions that take place while students are involved in learning outside the classroom are rich

opportunities for implementing many aspects of the New Zealand Curriculum. The experiences students have

together beyond the classroom are important not only because of the learning that occurs for each individual

student but also for the shared experience that teachers can draw on afterwards for further learning

opportunities. At Wadestown School we believe that our camp experiences in Term One also play a very

important role in the implementation of our Leadership Programme particularly in the Year 7 and 8 area of

the school.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff who so willingly plan and organise their student’s camp

experience. This involves much time and effort outside school hours to ensure that the week runs smoothly

and the students have an experience that they will remember positively for years to come. I would also like to

thank the wonderful group of volunteer parents who offer to attend camp and assist the teaching staff. Your

help is greatly appreciated and our school camps could not take place without you.

Year 3 Sports Festival Tuesday 13th March Our Year 3 Students took part in the Annual Year 3 Sports Festival held at Marsden School earlier this week. It

was a great opportunity to meet and make new friends from participating schools throughout the Wellington

Region.

Year 7 and 8 Camp Experience Our Year 7 and 8 students are enjoying a wonderful week of

weather at Curious Cove in the Marlborough Sounds. We

are looking forward to sharing some of their adventures with

you in the next school newsletter. Pictured left is the

challenging tramp to Mt kahikatea. While it is relatively

short for a mountain, it’s 640 metres are incredibly steep.

The arduous climb was rewarded with incredible views of

the Marlborough Sounds.

School Uniform Update We are encouraging our students to take responsibility for their uniform items and request that ALL uniform

items are clearly named. Sadly several children have lost named uniform items despite checking the lost

property container regularly.

Sometimes students have accidentally taken home clothing belonging to other students. Could we please ask

everyone to look through their uniform items at home to ensure you have your own child’s clothing and

return any unwanted items to the office.

If you have purchased a second hand uniform item could we ask you to please check that you have removed

the previous owner’s name from the uniform and re-named it. A reminder that some pens being used to

name uniform items fade after several washes, while sewn in labels are more easily identifiable for students

and staff and last much longer. The school office is now stocking permanent laundry marker pens for naming

uniform items and these are available for purchase at $8 each.

Child Cancer Support Day at Wadestown School

Mufti Day Friday 16th March On Friday 16th March, the Child Cancer Foundation has their annual street collection. One of our school values is EMPATHY and we would like to support this worthy cause that affects so many our children throughout New Zealand. Your child has the opportunity to wear mufti on Friday 16th March. Please can we ask that no pyjamas are worn and we would prefer animal hats to also remain at home. We would also like each child at both sites to bring their favourite soft toy to share with their classmates along with their donation for The Child Cancer Foundation in a sealed envelope to give to their teacher. Could all parents please encourage their child to earn this money by completing jobs at home this week. You may also like to discuss the wonderful work that The Child Cancer Foundation does in supporting families throughout the country. Thank you for your support and we look forward to a great day on Friday 16th March.

Kind regards,

Sally Barrett
