MEETING TO DISCUSS ON PROPOSED FORMATION OF BLA COOP 7 Dec 2019

The meeting was chaired by Pn Hjh Nellie, President and attended by Tn Hj Abd Talip, Vice

President, Tn Hj Abu Bakar and members. A Protem Committee was formed at this meeting. Its task

is to review the draft Constitution, suggest possible future income generating activities, and

DBP LAMBAK KANAN LIBRARY OPEN DAY 2019

BLA participated at the DBP Lambak Kanan Library Open Day on 14 and 15 Dec 2019. The event

coincided with the launch of Perkampungan Perpustakaan 2019. BLA was honored to welcome YB

Pg Hj Ali Pg Maon, Legco Member, Pg Hj Mohd Hasnan Pg Hj Ali Hassan, Permenant Secretary

MCYS and Dr Dy Hjh Siti Norlkalbi Hj Wahsalfelah, Deputy Permenant Secretary MCYS.

The 2 days were filled with activites like stoytelling, exhibitions, aerobics, sports, games and e-sports,

workshops, book sales, book character costumes and expo of products of the Village Consultative

Council

The annual gathering of children and young adults library members from other districts were joined by other children and parents enjoying the various activities. BLA wishes to record its appreication to DBP Brunei for inviting us to be part of the event.

2019 SOUTHEAST ASIAN LIBRARIANS SEMINAR “Construction and Cooperation of Digital Library”

The National Library of China organized the 2019 Southeast Asian Librarians Seminar from 21-29 November 2019 in Beijing, China to further deepen the communication and cooperation of libraries between China and Southeast Asian countries and promote the common development among Asian countries. Aw Hj Abdul Hafiz, Librarian Universiti Teknologi Brunei was nominated by BLA to attend this fully funded seminar.

The Universiti Teknologi Brunei Library organised its inaugural Library Staff Development Programme 2019 from 7 until 25 September 2019. The programme was divided into seven modules with the aim of enhancing the organisational and communication skills, work effectively in a team and explore self-management technique among librarians in Brunei. The modules consists of topics such Customer Services, Report Writing, Critical Thinking, Stress Management and others. It was held at the Training Room of the UTB Library Complex go to page 6

On 26 September 2019 a certificate presentation ceremony for the participants was held at the Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Library Complex. Certificates to 44 participants from 16 libraries were given away by YM Dayang Elizah Radin Mas Ismail, Acting Registrar and Secretary of UTB. Also present were the UTB Senior Librarian and staff of the University and guests.

UTB BOOK BAZAAR 2019

Universiti Teknologi Brunei Library organised its annual Library Book Bazaar (ULBB) 2019 from 24 to 26 September 2019 and 28 September 2019. This was held in conjunction with the 6th UTB Convocation Festival which was held at UTB Library.

Nine vendors joined the bazaar which included the Attorney General’s Chambers Law, Prime Minister’s Office; Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA); Kolej Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan (KUPU-SB); National

Standards Centre from Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industries (MEMI); Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei; Early Childhood Publications Co.; Joy Sim Collection; Asfi Book World Sdn Bhd; and Bloombyf.bn. The variety of items on sale were books, stationaries and apparels. The bazaar aims to enrich the library collection with latest published academic books, references and general topics on different fields and to enhance the community awareness on the empowerment of knowledge and reading culture as a source of inspiration for lifelong learning in our daily lives. Other food vendors also participated at the event.

NEW TITLES LAUNCHED

The Curriculum Development Department launched the ‘Buku Bacaan Sejarah Kesultanan Brunei Tahun 6’ and Social Studies for Brunei Darussalam Year 4 Resource Book at the Curriculum Development Department on 25 November 2019. Buku Bacaan Sejarah Kesultanan Brunei Tahun 6 is a package containing five books titled Cabaran Empayar Kesultanan Brunei sepanjang Abad Ke-19; Penyerahan Pulau Labuan 1846; Amanat Sultan Abdul Momin; Perjanjian Perlindungan Inggeris 1888 and Perjanjian Perlindungan Tambahan 1905 dan 1906.

REAL GHOST STORIES OF BORNEO 3

The popular book series Real Ghost Stories of Borneo is a collection of easy-to-read ghost stories, including firsthand accounts of supernatural encounters. Written by Bruneian author, Dr Aammton Alias. He has written more than 20 books and ebooks, which are also sold on amazon & itunes etc. This series #3 contains 200 pages.

12 Nov 2019 The Standard Chartered Futuremakers Programme awarded BND15,000 grants to the two top winners for the best business proposals and social enterprises tackling poverty in Brunei through the Society for Community Outreach and Training’s (SCOT) Youth Against Poverty Workshop (YAP) themed innovation meets inclusivity which kicked off on 4 Nov 2019 at Yayasan Shopping Complex’s Ruang Bn. A total of 50 participants comprising 10 teams joined the three-day-workshop and forum. Five were chosen for a secondary round of pitching before announcing the two winners The remaining finalists of the programme were Big BWN Project plans to launch a restaurant to employ ex-convicts enrolled in the reintegration course called Rakan Seliaan, Covered by AnNisa aimed at empowering creative young Bruneians with the technical, entrepreneurial and competitive advantage required by the industry, KadaiRuncit.com comprises six people seeking youth currently enrolled at the Youth Development Centre (PPB) through workshops engaging participants to formulate business ideas to eradicate social issues and determine the sustainability of the project. Kemari Farm and BenchLab were named the top two winners of the Youth Against Poverty programme in partnership with Futuremakers, a collaboration with Society for Community Outreach and Training (SCOT). at a ceremony at the Indah Hall, Peak Performance Sdn Bhd of the

Royal Brunei Recreation Club A group of five youth’s pledge to train 50 Bruneians to become farm owners through an incubation programme won the best social business idea and $10,000 from Standard Chartered Brunei (SCB) in the culmination of the fourth Society for Community Outreach and Training’s (SCOT) Youth Against Poverty (YAP) programme. Kemari Farm has already been awarded a 0.7 hectare plot at the Youth Development Centre in Salambigar after showing promise in the centre’s Young Farmers programme. Creative workshop organizer BenchLab’s pitch to build a mobile app that would connect traditionally trained local masseuses Ruma-Ke-Ruma with customers won second and $5,000. SCB’s grant is part of Standard Chartered global’s new flagship corporate social responsibility initiative called Futuremakers which aims to empower youth with education, employability and entrepreneurship opportunities. YAP, which is now in its fourth annual edition, brings together Bruneians looking to initiate or improve poverty alleviation projects in the Sultanate for a three-day workshop. Participants pitched their ideas on 12 November with the winning project awarded a $10,000 grant and the runner-up a $5,000 grant.

13 Nov 2019 The Radisson Hotel emerged champion at the World Halal Culinary Championship 2019 held at the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Tertiary Industry Forum Showcase 2019 from 10-12 November . Second place went to the Rizqun International Hotel while team IBTE I and ICA B came third and fourth. The first-of-its-kind event saw the participation of 13 teams.

13 Nov 2019 An opening ceremony of Star City Mega Mall management office and exclusive preview of the prototype took place at Star City Mega Mall office in Batu Bersurat, Jalan Pengkalan Gadong with the ribbon-cutting officiated by CEO of Star City Mega Mall Lam Chit Sang and Partner of Star City Mega Mall Haji Zainal Abidin bin Haji Mohd Daud. 25-26 Nov 2019 Four Bruneians represented the country in the inaugural Republic of Korea-ASEAN Fashion Week. Mr. Nasroul Hizam bin Haji Souyono, Syahamsudin bin Haji Ali, Mr. Fadzil Hadin and Ms.Genevieve Ang, are among the ASEAN heads of fashion associations, designers, fashion companies, as well as domestic designers from Korea. The rare event has been designed to promote friendship and mutual cooperation between the RoK and ASEAN countries in the fashion sector, particularly in celebration of the ASEAN-RoK Commemorative Summit The main event of the fashion week is the Korea-ASEAN Special Fashion Show, which was jointly organized by renowned designers from the RoK and 10 ASEAN countries.

27 Nov 2019 Brunei will supply over 200 metric tonnes (MT) of hydrogen to Japan in 2020 announced at the opening ceremony of the Advanced Hydrogen Energy Chain Association for Technology Development’s (AHEAD) hydrogenation demo plant at the Sungai Liang Industrial Park (SPARK) in Belait District .Operated and managed by a consortium of Japanese companies, the plant represents the first global supply chain of hydrogen from Brunei Darussalam to Japan.

28 Nov 2019 Universiti Teknologi Brunei in the newly published 2020 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QSWUR): Asia ranked at 137th. The university climbed 44 places. A total of 557 institutions were listed in the ranking this year. The QSWUR: Asia highlights the top universities in Asia annually since 2009.

28 Nov 2019 Institute of Brunei Technical Education celebrated two achievements: achieving ISO 21001:2018 management system for educational organisations (EOMS), and recognition of IBTE Jefri Bolkiah Campus as an Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO)-approved training centre to run the International Minimum Industry Safety Training (IMIST) courses.

30 Nov 2019 The Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC) conducted the final assessment of its Women in Science Competition (WIS) 2019. Three women chosen to go into the finals after the preliminary round in June 2019. The past five months have been intense as they worked on their project execution. They were given the Women in Science Project Fund to headstart their projects into reality. The top three finalists – Arinah Hadirah binti Sharom from Tanjong Maya Secondary School, Ashley Liu Lui Wen from Rimba II Secondary School and Keziahjoy Naval Calimlim from St Angela’s School – were selected based on their outstanding performance showcasing three different projects that covered the topic of health and fitness, environmental sustainability and interactive education respectively. The Women in Science project aims to empower local female students to take the lead in conducting projects they are passionate about, while also encouraging our youth to be more innovative and active in putting out initiatives to make a change in their community or the country. Participants are encouraged to be critical and strategic with their project management

1 Dec 2019 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games bagged first gold medal in wushu at the World Trade Centre in Pasay, Philippines. Brunei’s young wushu talent Mr. Mohammad Adi Salihin bin Haji Roslan won gold medal contention after he led the men’s nandao round with a total of 9.64 points, ahead of Vietnam’s Quoc Khanh Pham and Indonesia’s Harris Horatius. Ms.Basma bagged her second successive silver in the women’s taijiquan event while Ms Hosea Wong took silver in the men’s taijiquan.

3-5 Dec 2019 Brunei Darussalam hosted the 9th Southeast Asian Youth Al-Quran Reading Competition for 1441 Hijrah/2019 International Convention Centre . 16 reciters presented their reading including the national Qari and Qariah, Abdul Mu'in bin Haji Abdul Hamid and Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana binti Pengiran Haji Marjuki. Mr Kamaruddin G Zaidon from Philippines is the Male Champion and Dk Siti Ummi Syazana Pg Hj Marjuki from Brunei Darussalam is Women Champion.

4 Dec 2019 A Serama rooster called Woody, from Brunei Darussalam, won the title of Raja Kibas (Fluttering King) at the Contest for Ornate and Beautiful Serama in Sandakan, Sabah. Fifty Bantams from Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei Darussalam competed in 10 categories of the state-level poultry pageant organised by the Sandakan Serama Breeders. Woody is owned by Emran bin Haji Damit, whose Serama hen, Elsa, won first prize in the Hen category of the 2019 Open Contest for Ornate and Beautiful Serama in Kota Kinabalu. Woody also won second prize in the Serama ‘B’ category of the Sandakan pageant. Emran’s other Serama bantams, Thomas and Sri Anna, were placed second and third respectively, in the Spurless Serama and Serama Hen categories.
