We will conduct this exercise at the end of the school day. Students will be dismissed to their buses approximately 10 minutes earlier than normal. The drivers will go over safety information and conduct the evacuation drill. Following the drill, we expect an on-time departure from school grounds. Students walking home (or to the Teen Center) will be asked to board a bus for the drill and then will be dismissed to walk or ride their bike home. Each school year, schools across Illinois are required to conduct a number of emergency drills in order to prepare students and staff in the event of an emergency during the school day. WMS will be conducting at least three fire drills, a severe weather drill, two lockdown drills, and a school bus evacuation drill during the course of the school year. These drills generally last no more than 15 minutes. In many instances, our local fire and police departments are on site working with us in conducting and evaluating these drills. The majority of these drills are not announced to students or staff in order for us to be able to accurately evaluate the drill and make changes for improvement, as necessary. For the same reasons, everyone in our school participates in these drills. Should you be visiting our school during one of these drills, you will be expected to evacuate (fire) or take cover (weather or lockdown) with us. If you arrive during a lockdown drill we will not be able to respond to our video intercom at the main entrance. Should you ever have any questions or concerns about these drills, please contact us. Our school bus evacuation drill will take place the week of National School Bus Safety Week on October 16th.

STUDENT DROP-OFF 6:45 - 7:00 AM (Early Band) Parents may drop off students at either the B2 or D7 entrance. However, after 7:00 AM parents must drop at the B2 entrance, as our buses will begin arriving. 7:00 - 7:30 AM Parents must drop their child off on the north side of the school. Students may enter at either the B1 or B2 entrances. It is important that you pull all the way forward and that your child is ready to exit your vehicle when you come to a stop. Students should only exit onto the sidewalk from the passenger side of the vehicle. The B1 & B2 doors will be locked at 7:30 AM. (On inclement days causing traffic delays, we will keep the B1 & B2 doors open past 7:30 to accommodate late arriving students.) After 7:30 AM Students arriving at school after 7:30 AM must enter through the main entrance (A4) and sign in at the office. Students arriving back at school following a doctor, dentist, or other appointment may sign themselves back in. While welcome to do so, parents do not need to come into the school when dropping off their student.

STUDENT PICK-UP During the School Day When picking your child up during the school day, please send a note in advance noting the time you will be picking him/her up. Students should bring the note to the office in order to receive a pass to leave class at the appropriate time. In the event your plans change after your child has left for school, we ask that you contact our office by 1:00 PM so that we can ensure that the new information gets to your child. Parents must sign students out in the main office. 2:10 - 2:30 PM When picking your child up right after dismissal (walkers and riders are dismissed at 2:25) you must do so on the north side of the school.  Please pull all the way forward to allow traffic in behind you. Your child should enter your vehicle on the passenger side. After 2:30 PM Students staying after school for sports, clubs, or other activities should be picked up at the Activities Entrance (D7) on the Washington Street side of the school.

SCHOOL OFFICE Our school’s office is a busy place. This is especially true at the beginning and end of each school day. You can help us better assist you by making use of this information and procedures:

OFFICE HOURS The Woodland Middle School office is open 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

REPORTING AN ABSENCE If your child will not be coming to school, please report the absence by calling our attendance clerks no later than 9:00 AM the day of the absence.

(847) 856-3401

HOMEWORK REQUESTS On a typical school day roughly three to five percent of our students are absent. That’s between 60 and 100 students a day in a school of over 2000. As such, we ask that students and parents rely upon the homework calendar within Schoology maintained by each of our teachers for absences ranging from one to two days. For longer absences, parents may request homework by calling the Woodland Middle School attendance office (847-856-3401) by 9:00 AM. Homework will be sent down to the office for pick-up by 2:30 PM.

LOST & FOUND The Woodland Middle School office maintains a Lost & Found. Students and parents are encouraged to check here for any belongings that may have been lost or misplaced. These items will also be on display outside the main office during Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences in November. Please make certain that your child’s personal belongings are labeled with permanent marker. Labeled items are much easier to return to their owner.

WOODLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL CALENDAR Parents and students can access information regarding school holidays, student activities, concerts, athletic events, etcetera on the school calendar maintained on the Woodland Middle School website, http://www.dist50.net/middle. Click on the “All Calendars” link and select “Middle School”.
