You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. First Lesson from the Gospels Luke 1:26-35, NLT

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”

The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! Carol No. 153 It Came Upon the Midnight Clear CAROL

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold;

"Peace on the earth, good will to all, from heaven's all gracious King!" The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled,

and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing,

and ever o'er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing.

And you beneath life's crushing load whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way, with painful steps and slow,

look now, for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing; O rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing!

For lo, the days are hastening on, by prophet seen of old,

when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold; when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling,

and the whole world send back the song which now the angels sing. Sermon For the Mighty One Is Holy and Has Done Great Things Lia Scholl * Hymn of Commitment No. 148 O Come, All Ye Faithful ADESTE FIDELES

COMMUNITY NEWS

Advent is the season of expectation. Let us expect good things in the world. Let us expect to share love with one another. Let us expect kindness and goodness to win. And when we are faced with things we don’t expect, the lack of justice or of mercy, let us resist and disrupt together.

The Finance Committee is working to complete the 2017 budget. As soon as possible, we need your 2017 pledge cards. If you have not yet completed your pledge, cards are available on the hymnal cart. Please place your card in today’s offering plate. As soon as pledges are in, we'll send out our proposed budget for 2017.

If you have end-of-year donations to be reflected in your 2016 giving statement, please try to have them postmarked by January 1, 2017.

Large print hymnals are available. Talk with an usher if you need assistance. Music and lyrics are reprinted with permission of OneLicense # A-719218.
