CHAPTER DIRECTOR – JOYCE ELMORE

Have we been having a fun month or what? After the Sept. meeting a few of us took a ride that ended at Viejas where they were having a classic car show. I saw a '60 Corvette that I would have loved to take home, but the guy wouldn't sell it to me and I didn't seem to have enough cash in my pocket to make him change his mind. There were some beautiful cars and trucks out there, great paint jobs. We had 19 bikes show up for the Poway Days Parade. All the kids loved the bikes, especially when we blew our air horns!! This was mine and Rick's first year riding in the parade and it sure seemed like a short parade. It was a little wet while we were in the staging area, but dried up before we started the parade. Maybe next year we could have more people and bikes and really impress the folks up in Poway.

The next day we had two groups doing two different things. We had a small group go up to the Paladins Ride in Es-condido and a larger group go to Campo to the Train Museum and ride. We had 18

people go out to Campo, Jerry Miller rode her own bike out there and did a really good job. The train ride was lots of fun and a great time to visit and get to know everyone better. They even have a dinner ride, it's a lit-tle pricey $75 a piece, but you get all kinds of food. Maybe if I win the lottery.... A whole bunch of us went camp-ing over the weekend of the 24th & 25th, up at Green Valley Falls. We had three campsites, with 10 tents/campers and 18 people. A few folks came up on Saturday to visit for the day and Carmen & Rae stayed the night in their van. We sat around the campfire toasting marshmallows and making S'mores, yummy. Ask Carmen Yennie how much charcoal she consumed while eating well done marshmallows. Maybe next year we could even go camping twice in one year!!

CHAPTER DIRECTOR – JOYCE ELMORE

It really was a lot of fun. Thanks to all who went up to Chapter 1-A's ride on the sec-ond, I heard we had a big group. Rick and I were busy taking pic-tures at Jim & Kay's son's wed-ding, a very nice wedding and we even did a bit of dancing. Our Fun Ride is coming up real quick and we still need door prizes. Please bring you door prizes over to our place, Chuck & Shelley's, Crystal's or Carmen & Rae's or to the Prep party on Sunday the 10th. We need eve-ryone who will be working the ride to be at Carmen and Rae's at 1pm to get everything together for the ride. Bring something to BBQ and a side dish to share. We had to make an adjustment in the amount the people who are working the ride will be pay-ing. We had to change it to $6.00, that just covers your pin and lunch. Please register and give your registration and money to Chuck or me. This is going to be so much fun. I've set up a CPR/First Aid course for the 15th of January. It will be from 8am to 4pm, bring your own sack lunch and wear comfortable clothes. We will be on the floor doing first

aid and CPR, so no short skirts or low cut blouses, we wouldn't want to distract anyone!! The cost will be $30 a person, we are getting a discount because he likes us, the normal fee is $40. Time to start thinking about our Progressive dinner. Bob & Carla Rathbone have kindly vol-unteered to organize the dinner. So if you have any suggestions, please let them know. We have at least one house picked out, Diane and Dan would like to have dessert at their place. We haven't decided on what to have for the main course, so if you have any good ideas, let us know. The holiday season is fast ap-proaching and it's time to figure out what we are going to do about our adopt a family/organization for Christmas. We have a couple thoughts and will keep you posted on what we de-cide. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. That should about do it for now, take care and ride safe. Joyce, Rick and the girls

ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR – JIM ZABLER

The time has come for our Annual Fun Run. I know Kay and I are looking forward to seeing and visiting with all who attend. We are also hoping to see lots of fun costumes. We have done quite a bit this year to in-crease our FUN, new FRIENDS and especially, SAFETY.

After our meeting last month a group of us rode out to Viejas factory outlet and a ‘50’s car show. It was well worth the trip. There were many history making automobiles. Real cool. I would have loved to take home about 3 or 4 or maybe 5 or 6 of those rare beauties. About 2 o’clock we saddled up and headed for the Bread Basket in Alpine for lunch and their scrumptious desserts. When everyone had filled their bellies we then headed our own direc-tions for home. On Sunday, September 12th a few of us headed up the coast to Buena Park and CA1-Q. A fun time was had by all, of

course that is always the case when you get around Q. After the meeting, we joined up with Q and rode back to San Diego and Bates Nut Farm. They have a real neat gift shop and a lot of goodies there. Maybe one day we should set up a ride to go there through the backcountry roads. It was an enjoyable day. Saturday the 18th found about 19 bikes riding in the Po-way City Parade. We met up at McD’s in Penasquitos around 8:00 AM and then road over to the staging area on Pomerado Rd. in Poway. It was drizzling while we waited for the parade to start, however by the time the parade started the drizzle stopped and it turned out to be a real nice day. People were lined up on the streets for a couple of miles to watch. We really put on a show for them as we rode by. Bob R., Craig R and Crystal R. did circles which, seemed to please the crowd. Even Dan and Diane did a couple of turns also. The crowd loved it all. They were even pointing at my trailer so I know we were well appreciated. I would like to thank all for doing our chapter proud. After the parade we went to Boll Weevil for lunch and then to Motor Sport Warehouse

to see how they were doing for just opening up. I think we kind of shocked them when we all showed up out front. Sunday I led a group of 11 bikes over to Campo and the train museum. A good time was had by all and as we were get-ting ready to leave, the 4 people who had gone to Escondido for the Paladins ride showed up and 14 bikes went to Barrett Junction for lunch. While we were eating there was an accident down the rode and so by the time we were finished, traffic was backed up enough that we decided to go back to Campo and onto I-8 for our ride home. Maybe we made better time. Once we got into the area of Lake Jennings and 67, everyone sort of broke away and went their separate ways. All in all, it was a pretty busy weekend for yours truly. Ride hard, ride safe and enjoy every single day to its fullest.

I realized that it had been a while since I wrote about the Rider Education Program when I started getting questions from new people who were asking about this 'Level 1 thing.' My apologies to the group for letting this slide in the interest of other topics. The Rider Education Program (REP) is the keystone of the Chapter Educator position and is Dori and my primary fo-cus. A description of the four levels of the Rider Education Program follows at the end of this article. I encourage all of you to get involved in this pro-gram as it has been shown to re-duce the risks of riding and could easily save your life or that of a friend or loved one. Please see Dori or myself with any questions or concerns. Re-member, the only bad question is the one that goes un-asked. A key point of the Rider Education Program is that it is NOT a patch and pin sale! While there are patches to recog-nize the four levels of the pro-gram, the focus and intent of the program is safe riding through

education, training, and prepar-edness, without reducing the en-joyment of riding. The rewards of this program come in the form of safety and preparedness; the patches are a bonus. We don't like to discuss accidents and what would happen in the case of someone going down, but we all participate in a very danger-ous sport in which someone could easily be seriously injured or killed (no sense sugar-coating it). This is a serious risk -- what can we do to eliminate it? Noth-ing! What can we do to RE-DUCE these risks? Be aware of safe riding habits, improve your riding and/or co-riding skills, and be trained to act in case of an emergency. These three points essentially encompass the first three levels of the program, with Level 4 being more prestig-ious with more stringent require-ments that make these Level 4 Master Tour Riders and Co-riders examples that the rest of us should aspire to. An important and often over-looked point is the co-rider aspect of the Rider Education Program. Some co-riders are not as likely to get involved in the program since they're 'just along for the ride.' Co-riders are an integral part of our team when riding. This becomes apparent when we're on a poker run and need someone to read directions, but its just as true every time we go for a ride. Beyond their as-sistance and being another pair

CHAPTER EDUCATORS – DAVID & DORI DIRIG

of eyes looking out for us as we go down the road, co-riders en-dure the same risks as riders do. Because of this, co-riders should wear the same gear and undergo parallel training to the riders. The GWRRA Co-rider Seminar provides a great start for co-rider training on safety, riding gear, and most importantly what to do in the case of an accident. I would put this tough question to the co-riders out there. Could you control the bike and bring it to a safe stop if your rider was incapacitated due to flying de-bris or health problems? Ask yourself what you would do if you were tooling down the road watching the scenery go by at 70mph and your rider slumps over the handlebars. You have a split second to regain control of the bike and save both your lives -- do you know what to do? Have you and your rider prac-ticed it with the bike on the cen-ter stand? The Co-rider Seminar provides the answer to this scary but realistic question. Have you (and your rider) seen it? Watch-ing this 45 minute video satisfies the co-rider requirements for level 2 of the Rider Education Program. See the following sec-tion for a capsule summary of the intent and requirements for the four Levels of the Rider Edu-cation Program (plagiarized from the National GWRRA Rider Ed Manual). As always, feel free to come to Dori or my-self with any questions or con-

cerns. Level 1 - Safety through Commitment: Safety is a state of mind which can only be attained through total commitment. Every successful accomplishment began as a commitment to reach the in-tended objective and a promise to learn for the sake of you, your Co-Rider, your friends, family, and others on the road. Level 1 is per-haps the most important part of the REP structure. Regardless of your training and skill level, it is basi-cally worthless if you are not com-mitted to utilize your training and skill to their fullest. This commit-ment not only affects you and your Co-Rider, but others on the road. You will be registered with the GWRRA across the country and your promise never has to be re-newed as it is truly a commitment for life. REP1 Requirements: GWRRA membership and a one time $6 fee, no renewal required. Accumulate Safe Miles in 5000 mile increments. Level 2 - Safety through Education: GWRRA has chosen several educational training pro-grams for the operators and Co-Riders such as the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) programs, the United Sidecar Assoc., the CSC (Canadian Safety Council), and the GWRRA’s rid-ing courses. We say “Go see the experts” for your ‘On-the-bike-training.’ Completing these courses provides the foundation and skills for your quest to be a safe motorcycle rider. All recog-

nized programs are taught by qualified and nationally certified instructors. For the Co-Rider, we have provided an excellent semi-nar and 2-up programs to assist in your role in the safety aspect of motorcycle riding. REP2 Re-quirements: $5 fee, annual re-newal required, must be enrolled in REP1 and a GWRRA member with motorcycle endorsement (rider) and have taken a training course described above within the last 2 years. The Co-Rider semi-nar satisfies the training require-ment for Co-Riders. Level 3 - Safety through Preparedness: It would be great if we could achieve the coveted goal of zero accidents, however, we know realistically this is hard to attain. Since accidents will and do occur, it is important that we be fully prepared to lend aid to unfor-tunate accident victims. We should always be prepared to save a life. The Level III of the Rider Education Program (Certified Tour Rider) was developed to deal with such circumstances by recognizing and encouraging proper First Aid or CPR training. CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), a REP3 requirement has been used to save many lives. Being trained to render CPR or First Aid is a tre-mendous asset. REP 3 Require-ments: $4 fee, annual renewal re-quired, must be current in REP1 and REP2 and a GWRRA mem-ber. Must be certified in either First Aid OR CPR, wear proper protective gear, and carry a first aid

kit on the motorcycle. Co-rider must ride behind a Level 3 rider. Level 4 - Safety through Enhanced Commitment & Prepar-edness: Level IV (Master Tour Rider) was designed for those spe-cial individuals who desire to "be all they can be" with regards to motorcycle safety. The require-ments are more stringent than REP 3 and require a greater commit-ment. These Riders and Co-Riders are caring, trained, and prepared with experience to back them up. We realize that Level IV is not for everyone, but it is for those who desire to be of greater service to their fellow man. Why desire to be a Level IV? It is a worthy goal. Being prepared to save a life is a high calling indeed! Master Tour Riders are shining examples to the rest of our membership. Others aspire to practice the same com-mitment that these people display. For that reason, because Master Tour Riders are our ambassadors to the members of GWRRA at all levels, we provide a special gather-ing to celebrate their commitment each year at Wing Ding, Region, and District Rallies. REP4 Re-quirements: GWRRA member current in REP3 for one year with 25,000 Safe Miles. Must be certi-fied in BOTH First Aid & CPR, wear proper protective gear, carry a first aid kit on the motorcycle and have taken a M/C training course within 2 years.

It really doesn't get any better than this! Who would have guessed that we would break all records for attendance at the 1999 District Rally? After counting and recounting all the registration forms and almost forgetting to count LaMar our Region Director we came up with a total of 613. That's 65 more than our previous record set in 1997 in Santa Maria. Our sincere thanks to all of you who attended the rally and helped make this one, one that we can all remember. We have had so much mail from so many of you thanking us for all our hard work. I admit that Fay and I put in a lot of hours planning the rally but we had a lot of help. Without all the volunteers it would not have been successful. Our vendors were great this year and we thank them for attending. We are already scouting loca-tions for next year. We can't rule out going back to Bakers-field but we are going to look at

some new locations. Plus we are looking at doing some things that we have not done before. Some are in the Fun area and some are in the serious area. I guess while we are at it we might as well shoot for 700. Millicent Nicholas is already generating ideas for the next Find a Friend game for the 2000 Rally. Those of you that missed the District Rally missed a good time. The Toga Party Saturday night was a huge success and the Hawaiian shirts at the closing ceremonies were great. These were all "Don't tell Ron" events. We noted some had leis instead of shirts. I think Fay and I sur-prised everyone by coming out in our Togas on Sunday night. We're still waiting to see the pic-tures. If you are standing up in a bus and the guy standing next to you is standing on your foot who do you complain to? The guy that is standing on your foot or the guy that is on the other side of you? It's amazing how many people complain to the guy on the other side. Just remember.........IT DOES-N'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!

PHOTO ALBUM - POWAY DAYS PARADE

We had a great turn out for our third annual appearance in the Poway Days Parade. There were about 19 bikes and we all made it to the end of the route!

Above: Dave Craig forgot that a Wing rider must always be on the alert! Below: Although it was mostly slow and go, several took turns riding circles...

Hi Friends!!! October

is a special month for me, my Wing will be one year old on the 10th. So far I have loved every minute of it. By the time you read this I will be just at 25,000 (all mine) miles on my wing. Carmen has at least 18,000 of those miles as a Co-rider. And it looks like October will have a lot for everyone to do so it should be fun.

It seems like it was

only yesterday that I was sit-ting here writing an article for last month… . We’ve been busy. The Poway parade, Camping, 1A’s ride in Lan-caster, and 1R’s meeting to promote our ride. Then this month we don’t have a free weekend day on the calendar.

Starting with the Pre-ride after the meeting. 1Z’s ride the fol-lowing Saturday with brunch at Buffy’s on Sunday. Our ride on the 23rd and an ice-cream social at Jim & Carol’s house on Sunday. Friday the 29th we’ll be leaving for Laughlin for the weekend. And of course on every Thursday we have our Pie rides.

A few other things that

need to be addressed, if you would like to become a front/back door please talk to me or David. We need more front and back doors because we are growing and don’t always have enough front and back doors. The other thing is that our six month planning meet-ing is coming up in January. If you have any ideas of things we can do, this is the prime opportunity to get it on the calendar. If you can’t make the meeting in January then write your ideas down and get them to me. This is your chapter, let’s do what you want to do.

For a chapter that doesn’t have a reputation for camping, we did a pretty good impersonation. If you look closely, you will see ‘Casa Sherwin’ above. Below: A few folks spent some time wiling away the hours playing dominos

I’m going to indulge myself this month and dedicate some space to the San Diego Drill team. It already seems like a distant memory, but even if I do say so myself, we ROCKED at District rally. Above is a picture of the team doing their very first ever 10 bike abreast maneuver. Even though the temperature was in the mid 90s at show time, we were pumping so much adrena-lin that we didn’t much notice. Our next performance is going to be on October 21st at the Honda facility in Torrance and we are hoping to get some sponsorship out of it. Speaking of sponsorship, we are still looking for more support personnel. We have a couple of new riders who are getting up to speed and things are going pretty well, but we need more non-riders to help out. We’re exited about the coming year and VERY soon we should have our theme worked out. For those who don’t know, we have decided to call ourselves the ‘Gold Angels’ and we intend to

copy the Blue Angels theme as much as possible. We haven’t even started the negotiations yet, but it’s our goal to perform at the Miramar Air Show if at all pos-sible. Hey, it could happen!!! Again, we haven’t finalized the uniform yet, but right now we are planning on royal blue flight suits with a gold stripe. I’m also working on a logo for the team which is very similar to the Blue Angels crest. We have a web page at www.goldangels.com which will be updated as we get more info. Sigh, so many projects, so little time. Oh well, at least we don’t get bored, right? I guess I’ll close and get on with the rest of the newsletter, but please let me know if you have any questions about the team.

DON’T HOPE, DECIDE

While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Port-land, Oregon, I had one of those life changing experiences that you hear other people talk about- the kind that sneaks up on you unexpectedly. This one occurred a mere two feet away from me. Straining to locate my friend among the pas-sengers deplaning through the jet way, I noticed a man com-ing toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family. First he motioned to his youngest son (maybe six years old) as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, loving hug. As they separated enough to look in each other's face, I heard the father say, "It's so good to see you, son. I missed you so much!" His son smiled somewhat shyly, averted his eyes and replied softly, "Me, too, Dad!" Then the man stood up, gazed in the eyes of his oldest son (maybe nine or ten) and while cupping his son's face in his hands said, "You're already quite the young man. I love you very much, Zach!" They too hugged a most loving, ten-der hug. While this was happening, a baby girl (perhaps one or one-and-a-half) was squirming excitedly in her mother's arms, never once taking her little eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father. The man said, "Hi, baby girl!" as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest while rock-ing her from side to side. The little girl instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder, motionless in pure con-tentment. After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared, "I've saved the best for last," and proceeded to give his wife the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several sec-onds and then silently mouthed. "I love you so much!" They stared at each other's eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands. For an instant they re-minded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age of their kids

DON’T HOPE, DECIDE

that they couldn't possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized how to-tally engrossed I was in the wonderful display of uncondi-tional love not more than an arm's length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask, "Wow! How long have you two been married?" "Been to-gether fourteen years total, married twelve of those," he re-plied, without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife's face. "Well, then, how long have you been away?" I asked the man as he finally turned and looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile. "Two whole days!" Two days? I was stunned. By the intensity of the greeting, I had assumed he'd been gone for at least several weeks-if not months. I know my expression betrayed me, I said almost off-handedly, hoping to end my intrusion with some semblance of grace (and to get back to searching for my friend), "I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!" The man suddenly stopped smiling. He looked me straight in the eye, and with forcefulness that burned right into my soul, he told me something that left me a different person. He told me, "Don't hope, friend ... decide!" Then he flashed me his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said, "God bless!" With that, he and his family turned and strode away together. I was still watching that ex-ceptional man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked, "What'cha looking at?" Without hesitating, and with a curious sense of cer-tainty, I replied, "My future!"
