Hats off (or should I say helmets off) to Todd & Carolyn Way, Assistant Fun Run Coordinator Mary Brinker and their
first rate Staff for heading up our annual Fun Run. There are so many people that helped out that I cannot name them
all.
A special thanks to Brian DeLuca, an employee of Dick Long. Brian was instrumental in ge/ng the food delivered , set-
up, served, and then helped clean up. Wow …. We need to get him a motorcycle or something.
It was a joy to see the en4re chapter come together for a common cause and by the end of the day …. pre6y much all
went as smooth as could be expected.
Also … as men4oned at the last Breakfast …. Our nomina4ons for COY and IOY are in full swing. If you didn’t turn in
your vote at the October Chapter Breakfast – make sure you do so at November’s Breakfast.
I’m keeping it short this month folks. Make sure you ride safe and as for me …..
“Wind Therapy” keeps me going.

Gratitude for Team Work CA1F Fun Run 2012 was a great success thanks to the team work of CA1F members. First accolades go to Todd and Carolyn Way who took on coordinating the event and hosting our motley crew in their home to ensure the pre-planning arrangements were all in place. They provided tables and chairs, serv-ing spoons, and lots of pens to help with registration! They delegated, motivated, donated and coordinated with a smile. Carolyn also manned the grand prize table and sold a zillion tickets. Maybe not quite that many. Mary Brinker not only served as assistant Fun Run Coordinator, she also provided a table and two coffee pots and coffee. In addition, she single handedly managed the collection and distribution of gift cards for the event! Thanks Mary. Dick Long and Bonita Chamberlain not only procured and delivered a delicious meal, they also provided chaf-ing dishes and sterno in addition to a large number of tables and chairs so we could all enjoy the meal with our guests! Thanks to them we were given the services of the amazing Brian who seemed to be everywhere offer-ing assistance and who did an outstanding job cleaning up after the event! Ed and Kay Carroll manned the pre-registration area, greeting guests and making sure check in went smoothly. They also ordered and ensured we had the Chapter Pins and the Chapter Flag at the event. Dave Gardner and Darrel Exline took care of on-site registrations, providing direction and greetings to our guests. Darrel as our treasurer, aka “Mr. Seed Money” also made sure everyone had the money and money boxes they needed, that the CA1F banner was on display, and that the easel and sandwich boards were in place. Dana and Carol Rowley not only brought out their Halloween best while greeting people as they arrived. Dana also printed out the large schedules that were on display for the event and the Slo-Ride and Carol mounted them on foam board so they were easily viewable and usable! Carol also brought in personal Halloween deco-rations for the event to make sure we had a festive setting upstairs. Dana got all the water for the event and made sure it was in place for the meal. Mike and Elma Maury not only coordinated the 50/25/25 and door prize tickets at the event; they also stuffed all
of the pre-registration envelopes. Bill and Carrie Hutchins helped them out by selling the door prize tickets. Mike and Elma arrived at the event with stamps and inkpads and tables to ensure that Lou and Kyoko Caspary had what they needed to stamp bracelet numbers on tickets. Jerry Kubitsky provided multiple tables and chairs, as he does each year to make sure our event is a success! Dale Douglass and Bill Hutchins also provided tables and chairs for the event. Mike and Cathy Berry not only helped serve the food, they brought hundreds of handmade deviled eggs to add to the meal! Michelle and Rich Kelley volunteered at the lunch table, ensuring that the buffet line went smooth-ly and food remained in plentiful supply!

DD Review,
Well, Fall is upon us as you can tell by the rain we have received lately and some light snow falling in the Sierra’s. What
a difference a few weeks make. As we merge into the cooler we6er days, its 4me to take advantage of all the training
GWRRA has to offer. Please ask your Chapter Educators to host one of the Rider Ed Seminars that are available. If you
don’t have a cer4fied instructor in your chapter, just ask and we will arrange to have someone come out put on a semi-
nar for you.
This is a good 4me to take everything out of the storage compartments of your bike and inventory them. Check out
that first aid kit you put in 4 years ago and ensure it is fresh and up to date. Throw away old that candy bar that you put
in your trunk last summer. Add a fresh bo6le of water or two while you’re at it. Don’t forget to do a very thorough T-
CLOCK, and while you are at it, when is the last 4me you checked your coolant level, or changed it?
These are just a few things to consider as our riding season slows down. California is blessed with year round riding
weather; we just have to be ready for the changes. Rain gear instead of cool vests are a couple things you may swapping
out of the trunk.
As we enter the holiday season, lets not forget those that are serving in the military around the world to help keep us
safe. There are many ways you can easily honor them, the following are just a few ideas to consider. A6end CA-1N’s Toys
for Tots event hosted by the United States Marine Corps, donate to the Blue Star Moms who send care packages to our
troops year round, a6end a Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) event, or simply just “Thank a Vet” for their service.
I just a6ended a quiet ceremony at the Sacramento Valley Na4onal Cemetery where we (PGR) stood guard while 33
veterans with no next of kin were interned with honors. It was an honor to note how many GWRRA members were in
a6endance, and of special note the event was lead by our very own J.P. Rocco; Region F, IOY, supported by several other
CAC & CA-2K members (Tom Jefferies, Ken Knox, Jerry Kougel, Les Valdez, to name a few).
The en4re event took less than an hour, but will remain in our hearts and memory for much longer, what a great day it
turned out to be. November 11th
is Veteran’s day, so please honor our Vets any way you can, and remember: “Hang on –
we’re going for a ride.

We are into the change of seasons in San Diego. The days have already gotten shorter. We will find ourselves riding into the low angels of the sun more often and likely at the time of day that most of us commute. Make sure you have the correct eyewear and sun visors to protect your vision as needed.
Be mindful of the changing temperatures and make sure you have appropriate layers of clothing for all extremes you may encounter in your planned rides. Put the rain gear in the bike now so that it will be ready when needed. Remember the first 20 to 30 minutes of any rain will be the most dangerous to us on motorcycles. The oils on the street will float on the water and have not yet had a chance to run off the roadway.
We are already seeing Christmas decorations in stores. That should remind us that people are soon going to be crazier than normal. As we get more into the holiday time of year we need to expect the unexpected.
In traffic we have a tendency to expect the average driver to obey the laws and do what they are supposed to do. The average person will signal, stop for stop lights and signs, or look before pulling out. Remember howev-er, by definition, one half of all drivers are below average. Sometimes I think we attract the lower half around us.
At this time of year it is prudent to expect that just about everyone we encounter is distracted by something. They are trying to find that store, somewhere around here, that had that great whatever. They may be distracted by the argument they had with their checkbook. It won’t matter what distracted them if they collide with you. You are likely to be the one that gets hurt.
You need to constantly scan well ahead of your machine, keeping your eyes moving, being on the lookout so you can predict what could go wrong. When you see one or more potential problems, develop a plan to reduce risks and avoid the problem(s).
Have a safe and wonderful time riding this season.
Lastly, Rider Education Activities are scheduled for November and December 2012 as follows:
Saturday, November 24 – Parking Lot Practice, 9:00 AM
Saturday, December 15 – Parking Lot Practice, 9:00 AM
After the Parking Lot Practice we will set up the field to allow interested riders to individually improve their skills. The Parking Lot Practices are held at 8322 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.

ALL THINGS GOLDWING By Lou Caspary
BATTERY LIFE How long have you been able to keep a battery?
I remember my good friend who was almost always on his 1500 and 1800. Many more miles than most of us will ever see. He got tired of getting stranded in the middle of other states because of a dead battery. There-fore, he would install a NEW battery every year, "no matter what". That was in the days before the BATTERY TENDER technology.
So yesterday, on the way to Brian Downing's "British" ride, I found myself stranded at a gas station. Dead bat-tery.
Guru Maury informs me that he changes his battery "before it needs it". Smarter than occurring my plight, I must admit, and that raises the question: How long do these things last??????
On daily Battery Tender, this Yuasa lasted me 8 years.
What are your stories?
BTW, on the (+) side I have 6 lead wires hooked up, and 4 on the (-) side..... what a Medusa!
BTW #2: Walmart $90, Fun Bike $120.
I still have the original on my '06. I bought the bike new in '07, and will have 130K miles on it this week. Have never had it on a battery tender. But I generally ride it every day. It will sit for about 10 days at the end of this month, I've done that before for trips out of the country, always has started up good. Had it checked a week ago at JBJ for full service, in good shape.
Kelly
I have a 08 Goldwing 1800 and back in 2009 I purchased a 12 Volt Motorcycle 5-Stage Maintenance Charger (Fully Automatic-Microprocessor Controlled). Made by Pulse Tech. Xxtreme ChargeTM. I have used it a couple of times NOT because my battery was giving me issues but to "condition" it. The first time I hooked it up it showed 75%. I thought it was going to read 100%. After running it thru the cycle it came up 100%. I have yet to buy a new battery, I still have the the original. I am positive this has extended the life of my battery. Hope this helps.
Mike Carter
My stock battery on the '09 is still going strong. I have a battery bug on it and right now it is showing 12.0 volts; 30% of battery life left and this is after sitting for 30 days. It started right up when I tried it this morning.
Regards,
Jim Zabler

Tammy Burmeister brought in the Chapter supplies so that all the plates, napkins and utensils that were needed were in place. She also made sure the table covers and table decorations were in place, in addition to manning the Scavenger Hunt table. Archie and Elaine Archer managed the Poker Table while Elaine cast bones for free medical diagnoses! Steve, Alma, and Liz Sprenkle coordinated all of the coffee, tea, hot chocolate and donuts. Not an easy task as they found themselves out front in the center of the serving area! A special thanks to the guys that helped me with the Slo-Ride, JD Ladner, Lorenzo Lizarraga, Dale Douglass, and Dave Gardner. A huge thank you goes out to Marcus at Fun Bike Center. He acted as liaison with our group, supported us in countless ways, and helped us repeatedly before, during and after the event! Thank you also to Fun Bike Center for the use of their facility and the tables and chairs that they provided. But most of all, thank you to every member of CA1F that came that day and helped to make the event a success. Every one of you pitched in and your efforts were noticed and appreciated! Coming soon… exciting news regarding next year’s Fun Run. Mark your calendars now for October 26, 2013. You won’t want to miss it.
