In the course of a given year someone will often tell me that they havenʼt been to shul in years, but had a loss and felt compelled to say kaddish. At that moment, that very moment of their lives when they needed the shul most, when they most wanted to feel that the community was there for them, it was. The challenge, of course, is how can we maintain that sense of community year in and year out? Because as community nourishes and sustains, it must continue to be nourished and sustained. This does not happen by chance. People make conscious decisions— that the community is important to them, that they want to participate in it, to help it succeed, to watch it renew itself for yet another generation of Jews. Each year the challenge grows. The needs are greater, the resources harder to find. In an aging congregation more members need dues assistance. In a still challenged economy, more members need help paying for Hebrew school for their children. At Beth El we have a policy that we will not turn away a member because they cannot pay their dues. And we will not tell a family they need to pull their child out of Hebrew school because they cannot pay the tuition. When members call me — and they do! — to ask for help, I am deeply grateful that I can say to them “We will help you. You are a member of Beth El, and we can be there for you now, as youʼve been there for us in the past.” That is precisely what community is all about. One of the major reasons I can say that to members and one of the most important reasons the shul can be there for our members is because of the success of the Annual Appeal. Over 1,000 families participate. The decision to give, to play a part, to make a difference is part of what makes Beth El the kind of congregation with which we feel proud to be connected. The kind of community that enables us, in the deepest sense, to care for our members and to be there for them, year in and year out, whenever the need arises. Thank you for your help in the past and please consider helping again this year. As individuals we all make a difference. And as a caring group of individuals we create the kind of community for which we are all grateful. LʼShana Tova! May we all be inscribed in the Book of Life for a sweet year! ROSH HASHANAH SECOND DAY SEATING Dear Friends: Greetings! We are currently gearing up for the High Holidays, which are only a few short weeks away! Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of Wednesday, September 24, and Yom Kippur beginning on the evening of Friday, October 3. This year brings an exciting and significant change in terms of how services on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, Friday, September 26, will be run. For many years, we have seen a significant decline in the number of people who attend second day services compared to those who attend services on the first day. To solve this problem, we have decided to combine all three services (the Rubin, the Offit, and the Gorn) into one large congregational service. The new family-friendly service, which was discussed extensively with the clergy, staff, and members of the Board, allows for members to be fully immersed in a new and creative, yet deeply meaningful service which will focus on the theme and traditions of the holiday. The service will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the sounding of the shofar, and conclude by 12:30 p.m. All clergy members will participate, offering thoughts, comments, and a powerful, dramatic interpretation of the morningʼs Torah portion. The music will include traditional and familiar melodies, as well as new pieces that will enhance the spirit of our holiday celebration. With the service being held in one room, a new open seating policy will take effect. However, those who have seats in the Rubin may reserve them for the second day if they plan to attend, following the same policy we have had in place for Erev Rosh Hashanah. Any seat without a tag on it will be available at the beginning of the service. After 10:30 a.m., all seats will be open seating. As always, we look forward to celebrating the beginning of a new year with you and your family and the entire Beth El community. May it be a sweet and healthy new year for all of us. Sincerely and with best wishes, Rabbi Steven Schwartz

Our Healing Service

wisdom, conversation and compassion, participants will find themselvesstrengthened through the encounter.

Holidays without the people that we love most by our side).

One Way TicketBy Rabbi Steven Schwartz

The great southern rock band the Allman Brothers are finallyreaching the end of their long road, recently announcing that theshows they play this fall will most likely be their last. No question in

their varied set lists they will play the classic ʻOne Way Out,ʼ a ramped upblues shuffle that tells the tale of a man trapped in the apartment of awoman whose partner has unexpectedly returned. Here the first stanza:

Ainʼt but one way out baby, Lord I just canʼt go out the door.Ainʼt but one way out baby, and Lord I just canʼt go out the door.Cause thereʼs a man down there, might be your man I donʼt know.

Like many of the great blues songs, the lyrics dance around a doubleentendre. The truth is there is one way out for all of us. The road we taketo that ʻdoorʼ will vary in length and quality, inchallenge and celebration, in light andlaughter. But the end of the road is alwaysthe same, and the words of the song ring true– there is one way, and only one way, out.

I was reminded of this in one of thoseunexpected flashes of insight (you DO getshown the light in the strangest of places)after an early evening run walking up the hillfrom the track back towards my house. Atthe top of the hill I looked up only to see atypical ʻOne Wayʼ sign, its stark black andwhite image staring back at me knowingly, arrow pointing me in the direction of home (inthis case YES direction home).

We travel life in one direction--from pastto the future, moving forward in time. Behind us is what happenedyesterday, last year, when we were young. Ahead? Who knows, but thefuture lies there with all of its uncertainty and promise, its hope andexpectation. We are ever poised between the two, living in presentmoments that come and go almost without our knowing. But we all walkon a one way street.

In the Mishnah, the classic rabbinic text from the second century CE,we find the following: “Know from where you have come, to where you aregoing, and to Whom you will one day make an accounting.” (Avot 3:1)The mishnah teaches that keeping these ideas in our mind will enable usto live a sin free life. Perhaps also in the ancient statement there can befound a sense of humility – we are all the same, on the same road, heading in the same direction, the most exalted and the most humble, thehighest and the lowest, the richest and the poorest. Led Zeppelin entitledtheir late 70s concert film ʻthe Song Remains the Same.ʼ I would say itdifferently – for each of us the song is actually different; it is the sign thatremains the same.

MEMBER SPOTL IGHT

Gittel King came to Beth El as a very little girl and has wonthe hearts of the congregation. She often sings with herdad, Cantor Thom King, and sisters on the holidays and for

other occasions. Recently, she was awarded the Rabbi Mark G.Loeb Judaic Studies College Scholarship Fund which is given to astudent who has successfully completed a course in JudaicStudies, Jewish History, Hebrew Language, Holocaust Studies, etc.King was asked to share some information about herself and herstudies. Her response is below:

Ever since I was little, I have always dreamed of being an educator.I have been an Assistant Teacher in the Beth El schools and aBʼnai Mitzvah tutor, but this past year, I became one step closer toachieving my goal. I attended the Bʼnot Torah Institute, a seminaryin Jerusalem. I not only had the privilege of receiving a wonderfuleducation, but I was able to take the lessons I learned aboutJudaism and relay them to others.

Previously, I worked at my synagogue, Beth Elʼs, summercamp, and returned this summer. I enjoyed sharing my love forIsrael with the children through various activities. I worked to instillin them the same love and connection that I have for Judaism, as Ibelieve that an appreciation for religion can greatly assist childrenat a young age.

I now feel that I have a greater understanding of how to build arelationship with my religion which will help me to communicate mypassion effectively with others.

A project of The Beth El Seniors is tosupport the maintenance and repair of oursynagogue's Torahs and Megillot. Theink cannot be chipped off even a little bit.The parchment on which the Torah is writtenmust be flawless. The slightest tear orsmudge will render the Torah unfit for use.The Beth El Torahs are regularly inspected

and repaired. This is a costly process. It is a mitzvah to contributeto a process that keeps our sacred scrolls preserved for futuregenerations. AT BETH EL CONGREGATION

When David Ben Gurion founded the Israel Bonds organization in1951 some of his closest collaborators were community leadersdedicated to the building and strengthening of the State of Israel.

More than 60 years later that spirit thrives at Israel Bonds where one of itsmost valued assets are lay leaders; synagogue and community leaders;clergy and staff too who help organize the campaign, plan appeals/events,and more. Again this year, Sonya Goodman and Robert Slatkin will be co-chairing Israel Bonds/Beth Elʼs appeal.

Participating in an Israel Bonds High Holy Days Campaign means youstand beside a nation that sends a field hospital and a 148 memberdisaster relief team to the Philippines immediately following TyphoonHaiyan, is the only country in the world with more trees now than 100years ago, and at 66 years-old ranks 12th in the world in Nobel Prizes.Furthermore, 250 multinational countries maintain research facilities inIsrael of whom 80 are Fortune 500 companies. Israel Bonds has helpedIsrael reach these milestones. Your support for Israel Bonds will helpIsrael maintain its economic strength and grow its accomplishments.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has repeated often what he said addressinga joint session of Congress 2 years ago, “Israel has no better friend thanthe US and the US has no better friend than Israel.” During this yearʼsHigh Holy Day Campaign, join with other friends of Israel at Beth El andmembers of congregations across the country who invest in Israel Bondsto show their support and love for Israel.

Israel Bonds also make great gifts for bar/bat mitzvahs and other lifecycle events. eMITZVAH bonds, available at $36, $54, $72, $90(exclusively online) and MAZEL TOV bonds ($100 and increments of $10)can be purchased anytime online. ROZ AND HOWARD KURMAN

By Linda Smeyne

We are proud to honor our Legacy Society members for theirgenerosity and foresight and are delighted to share theirstories with you in this and future issues of The Beth El

Voice. In this issue, we feature Roz and Howard Kurman.Roz and Howard Kurman made a commitment to leave a legacy

to Beth El in 2012. Roz is a registered nurse at the Garrison ForestSchool and a certified CPR instructor and Howard is chair of theLabor and Employment Practice Group at the law firm, Offit Kurman, practicing labor and employment law and litigation.

Despite their busy schedules, Beth El has a special place in thehearts and the lives of the Kurmans. As far back as he canremember, Beth El has been part of Howardʼs life. He celebrated hisBar Mitzvah at Beth El in November 1963. His parents were long-time members, and Howard was a member even before he and Rozwere married. Most recently, the couple was honored with an aliyahto help celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary, providing additionalsignificance and joy for their extraordinary milestone.

As with so many long-time Beth El families, the congregation hasbecome an integral part of the Kurman family through various life-cycle and synagogue events, both happy and sad: their childrenʼsHebrew School education and Bʼnai Mitzvah; Cantor Hammermanchanting Hineni on Yom Kippur; sitting in the same holiday seats for45 years; Howardʼs parentsʼ funerals officiated by Rabbi Loeb; thesurprise wedding of their son Michael and daughter-in-law Jaime lastJune at the Maryland Zoo at which Rabbi Saroken officiated andparticipated in keeping the secret; and their daughter Jill and son-in-law Idanʼs wedding in 2008 at which Rabbi Schwartz officiated.

Roz remembers with much fondness, her creation of a block inthe second Beth El tapestry, now hanging in the entrance Hall of theMain Sanctuary. She participated in the Beth El womenʼs trip toIsrael led by Rabbi Saroken and Ailene Sher in the fall of 2013. Itwas an experience she will cherish forever.

The Kurmansʼ gift to the Beth El endowment is very meaningfulto them. Howard emphasized how important it is to help thesynagogue sustain itself. The building is old and the infrastructureneeds care. He says itʼs also critical to support congregationalfamilies. It was easy for Roz and him to make their legacycommitment because they feel so fortunate to have been involvedwith Beth El for most of their lives, to share in beautiful and spiritualsynagogue services, and to know that the clergy will always beavailable to help whenever the need arises.

In fact, the Kurmans felt so strongly that they have alreadycompleted their commitment. They hope that other members withBeth El history will step up too, and make a gift through their estates.Howard believes that whatever the amount, together with manyothers, the gifts will keep the synagogue and itsʼ community strongand viable forever.

The Legacy Society is a group of donors who have stated theirintentions to provide a bequest in their will or estate plan to help fundcurrent and future needs of the congregation. Beth El created aspecial endowment fund for legacy gifts, which will ensure an annualinfusion of funds in perpetuity to help Beth El fulfill itsʼ mission. BETH EL WINS EARLYCHILDHOOD EDUCATION

ACCREDITATION

By Simone Ellin, Jewish Times, August 7, 2014

Beth El Congregationʼs Pauline Mash School for Early ChildhoodEducation is now accredited by the Maryland State Department ofEducation, making the school, which serves children from birth

through age 5, the first and only Jewish early childhood program in thestate to enjoy such accreditation, according to the Pikesville synagogue.

Mandy Barish, Maryland accreditation project specialist at Beth El,explained that the distinction signifies that the program exceeds statelicensing requirements for child care and early childhood centers.

Ilene Vogelstein, director of early childhood programs at Beth El, saidthe accreditation is the culmination of an 18-month process that included aself-study and program-improvement plan that was a joint effort betweenstaff and parents.

“Through the years, our children have learned tremendously, beennurtured and given skills that will serve them in the years to come,” saidparent Dori Chait, whose family has been members of the Beth El earlychildhood community since 2009. “I know the Beth El staff cares for mychildren as if they were their own, and thatʼs pretty amazing.”

Eyal Bor, the congregationʼs director of education, called theachievement “a testament to the professionalism and dedication of ourteachers.”

“Becoming the first and currently only Jewish early childhood programthat is accredited makes us all proud,” he said. “People will realize theirchildren and grandchildrenʼs place will be at Beth El forever.”

“PEOPLE WILL REALIZE THEIR CHILDREN AND

GRANDCHILDREN’S PLACE WILL BE

AT BETH EL FOREVER.”—EYAL BOR, DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
