History. In the early middle ages, Dordrecht grew from being a sim-ple settlement on the Thuredrith river into the most pow-erful mercantile city of the county of Holland. Dordrecht had the advantage of its location: at an intersection of trade routes, which were still mainly over water. This advantage was reinforced by the privileges granted by the counts of Holland. In 1220, for the first time, the count of Holland bestowed city rights on a residential area. This was Dordrecht, the first city of Holland.

However, trade really took off when the city was granted the stapelrecht [staple rights] in 1299. All ships that transported goods over the river were obliged to store and trade them in Dordrecht. The city grew, first along the raised embank-ments of the river Thuredrith, now the Voorstraatshaven. On the sandbanks in front of the city, warehouses and houses were built. Here, the Nieuwe Haven and the Wolwevershaven were created.

The area around Dordrecht was struck by disaster in 1421. The St. Elisabeth flood destroyed seventeen villages and flooded an extensive area. The Biesbosch arose in a large part of this area, other areas were enclosed by dikes and be-came polders. The forces of nature changed the landscape for good, but Dordrecht was spared. And what happened to trade? Still going well. Dordrecht‘s increasing welfare attracted traders and craftsmen from Germany, Flanders and England.

Dordrecht also played a leading role in politics and re-ligion. In 1572, twelve cities of Holland met in secret in Dordrecht to join their forces to resist the Spanish rule. It was the start of an independent Dutch state. The Synod of Dordrecht of 1618/1619 put an end to the religious disputes and ordered the first translation of the bible into Dutch, the Statenvertaling.

Even though these glorious times seem to be long gone, the city was shaped by them. Little has changed to the old street layout and the harbours dug for trading ships now provide the moorings for pleasure boats. Actually, nothing is more beautiful than to approach Dordrecht by water. The extraordinary location of the city centre, directly on the rivers, immediately stands out. With two impressive monuments as landmarks: the Grote Kerk and the Groothoofdspoort gate. Since the Golden Age, this best view of Dordrecht has been a source of inspiration for artists. Many, including Jan van Goyen and Aelbert Cuyp, have recorded it on canvas.

Also unchanged: the winding Wijnstraat and Voorstraat, the long-standing backbone of the city. Along the Voorstraatshaven there are jetties where skippers moored to unload their cargoes. Prominent houses along the Wijnstraat and Groenmarkt are reminders of their former occupants: wine sellers, timber merchants and owners of breweries and sugar refineries. The name Wijnhaven [wine harbour] almost speaks for itself: the wine trade provided many with a comfortable living. Even though you might not realise, the Stadhuis [city hall] was originally a commodity exchange for Flemish textile traders. The building is much older than the nineteenth century facade would lead you to believe.

In 1572, Dordrecht became protestant. The monaster-ies had to close their doors. The Grote Kerk and the Augustijnenkerk, the monastery church at Het Hof, were from then on protestant. Catholics held clandestine services, until in the nineteenth century they were once more able to practice their religion openly. French Huguenots had their own Waalse Kerk, now a shop. German immigrants founded a Lutheran church in the old Trinitatiskapel. You can see all of these churches on a walk through the city.paarse dodekop (purple),

statengroen (green), merwedegrijs (grey), Cuypoker (ochre) and engelsrood (red): just a few of the 55 historic dordrecht colours.

will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the old inner

city, and the surrounding rivers and polders. The climb

entertainment. So many people, so many opinions. You can experience the atmosphere of Dordrecht in all sorts of ways. The city entertains you with art and culture, a welcoming shopping centre, water-side outdoor cafes, theatres, museums, fes-tivals and initiatives of artists and theatre performers. It‘s not a secret: the Dordrechts Museum is a treasury of Dutch painting, from 1600 to today. Of course, works from famous Dordrecht painters including Aelbert Cuyp are on display. Here you can enjoy art from the past and the present, and the view of the garden from the museum restaurant. Discover also the numerous galleries with regularly chang-ing exhibitions of contemporary artists and designers.

Art organizations including the Teekengenootschap Pictura were already active in Voorstraat Noord and have seen the arrival of more and more art and antique shops end crea-tive entrepreneurs as artistic neighbours. The Voorstraat, originally a dike to retain the water, is the shopping street of Dordrecht. It winds through the city, from north to west, with shops, restaurants, historic buildings and views of the harbour. Half way along, you can rest at one of the outdoor cafés on the Scheffersplein.

From the Scheffersplein, side streets lead to the modern Statenplein. This is the shopping heart of Dordrecht, with clothes shops, department stores, a covered shopping arcade and retailers. On Fridays and Saturdays, the mer-chants promote their vegetables, fish, flowers and clothing on the market. In the narrower surrounding streets there are numerous specialist shops. The shops are open every last Sunday of the month. Bars and restaurants to suit a wide range of tastes are also well represented around the Scheffersplein and Statenplein, in the Nieuwstraat and on the Groenmarkt. Would you prefer to be closer to the water? Various bars and restaurants can be found near the Grote Kerk and the Groothoofd. Splendid views guaranteed!

Not to be missed is the former home of Simon van Gijn, now a museum. A homely museum, to delight both adults and children. Here you can see how Van Gijn, the nine-teenth century collector and art lover, lived with his wife. Children can have an unforgettable time in the attic with the toys. The interior of the oldest residence in Dordrecht, ’t Zeepaert in the Wijnstraat, can be visited the first Sunday of every Month.

The Kunstmin theatre stages both large national and small local theatrical productions. It is located in the nineteenth century part of the city. Theatregoers still love the interior that the architect Sybold van Ravesteyn revitalised in around 1930. In mid 2012, the theatre will close temporarily for ma-jor refurbishment. Real pop-music venues are Bibelot and the Popcentrale, where nationally famous bands perform and where you can dance to music from a DJ. The end of 2012 will see the opening of The Movies, the new art cin-ema, and the Energiehuis, the former power station that has been transformed into a ‘centre for stage arts’. In this exciting industrial monument, concerts, dance and theatre performances are planned.

Classical music and world music can regularly be heard in the Kunstkerk. For national and international jazz, visit Jazzpodium DJS. In her puppet theatre, Damiët van Dalsum gives performances with puppets and objects. She is one of the professional Dordrecht theatre performers. Dordrecht also hosts large annual events, such as the Heritage Days, the Dordrecht Book Market, Christmas Market and the Big Rivers Festival. See page 17 for more information.

walks and Boat trips. The Dordtse Rondjes are designed for curious visitors who don‘t want to miss any of the beautiful and sometimes secluded spots in Dordrecht. These are walks or boat trips that reveal the many faces of the city. The classic Rondje Dordt, a signposted walking route, takes you past a large number of the one thousand monuments, the museums and the harbour area that can be found in Dordrecht. At the Groothoofd, the interaction between water, wind and clouds will enthral you and cause you to stop. The view from the tower gallery of the Grote Kerk shows the route of the walk below and how the old city is embraced by the wide rivers.

The tales and facts behind these monuments and the events that took place are described in the booklet „Rondje Dordt“ and in the growing series of „Verhalen van Dordrecht“ (Stories about Dordrecht). For archaeologists, what lies under Dordrecht is a treasure chest, the lid of which is only rarely lifted. Take a look in the Waagpassage at the cellar of ‚Scharlaken‘, the medieval house. The heritage centre Erfgoedcentrum DiEP makes the city archives accessible to everyone and uses playful exhibitions to give a glimpse into the city‘s past.

Would you prefer a trip on the water? That‘s possible. From the Wijnbrug, the Dordtevaar, a whisper-still open boat, makes a Waterrondje through the city harbours. Sailing past houses built in the water, under dark bridges and around the Groothoofd, you get a completely different view of the city. You literally look up to important monuments, see that the Scheffersplein is actually a bridge and that the water in the Voorstraatshaven rises and falls with the tide. On the Oude Maas you form for a while part of the dynamic shipping traffic, before returning through the Wijnhaven to the Grote Appelsteiger.

The Kunstrondje Dordt, is of a completely different nature. The route passes seventy art shops, galleries, antique and curiosity shops, antiquarians and studios, all of which are situated reasonably - and sometimes very - close together in the inner city. Every first Sunday afternoon of the month, they open in concert. They can be recognised by the ‘Kunstrondje Dordt flag’. On these days, there are often additional activi-ties including music, exhibitions or demonstrations.

Dordrecht is an old city that is continually rejuvenating itself. History is unavoidable and it pops-up everywhere, even when you‘re not looking for it. For instance, when walking around the Hofkwartier you suddenly come face to face with the place where the Netherlands was born. In the Statenzaal of Het Hof, in the sixteenth century, the free Holland cities chose independence and the House of Orange. By doing so, they laid the foundation for the Netherlands state. Behind Het Hof is the former monastery garden, redeveloped into a modern city park, the Dordrechts Museum and the Kunstkerk (Art church), which turn the Hofkwartier into an area where history, art and leisure come together.

Dordrecht has a taste for more. Schapenkopkoeken (sheep head biscuits), an ‘oude Simon’ gin from Rutte, the tempt-ing ‚appelmarijn‘ (a special apple pastry) and the delicious hazelnut pastry: these are all Dordrecht products made by Dordrecht bakeries and a famous distillery. You cannot leave the city without tasting them!

nature. In Dordrecht‘s backyard is an extensive nature reserve: the National Park De Biesbosch. This freshwater tidal area can best be reached by bicycle, water bus, city bus or car from Dordrecht. A natural disaster created the Biesbosch. In 1421, the St. Elisabeth flood inundated and partially submerged the land around Dordrecht. Due to the influence of high and low tides, in the centuries that followed a rugged natural area was created, with osier and reed beds, sandbars and meandering brooks. Until a few decades ago, the Biesbosch was a rather inaccessible area known only to poachers, adventurers and osier workers.

The construction of the Deltaworks reduced the tidal range. The nature area is now more accessible, due to the crea-tion of paths, sailing routes and other leisure activities. The Hollandse Biesbosch, on the island of Dordrecht, forms part of the National Park De Biesbosch, which continues further on the Brabant side of the New Merwede river. Here you can cycle, walk, sail, have a picnic, go for a swim or play golf. The Biesboschcentrum Dordrecht is the starting point for sailing and walking excursions. It is also possible to discover De Biesbosch yourself, by boat. You can rent rowing boats, ca-noes and electric whisper boats from the Biesbosch centre. A solar ferry, with a roof made of solar panels, sails from the Biesbosch centre to the Griendmuseum path.

The Biesbosch centre Dordrecht offers an extensive pro-gramme of activities. You can join round trips by boat, canoe excursions and nature walks throughout the year. Sterling, the open whisper boat, and the Halve Maen, the saloon boat, are used for trips, varying from one hour to the entire day. Both boats are solar powered. Sometimes the trips are combined with walks, a visit to an osier shed or a town on the edge of the Biesbosch. Do you want to know everything about the beavers in the Biesbosch? Then pay a visit to the Beverbos (Beaver Wood), which is where Beert and Benthe family, a pair of beavers, live. The Beaver Wood is situated opposite the Biesbosch centre.

The nature of the Biesbosch can also be explored at the southern and the eastern ends of the island. Between the Oosthaven and the Zuidhaven an adventurous path winds through the osier beds and willow wood along the banks of the New Merwede river. At the Kop van ’t Land, you can take a car ferry to the Brabant area of the Biesbosch. In the area around the De Elzen forest, a polder forest with walking, cycling and bridle paths and a wood in which children can play, new nature areas are being developed on and around Tongplaat and Zuidplaatje, both in the water meadows. In the Louisapolder and Cannemanspolder, agriculture has given way to nature with many leisure opportunities. This has created an unbroken nature and leisure area south of the city: The new Dordtse Biesbosch, the Polder museum Twintighoeven in the De Elzen forest provides informa-tion about the cultural history of the island of Dordrecht. Everything is addressed: the nature, the landscape, archae-ology and the work people do in the Biesbosch.

For a nature walk, you don‘t even need to leave the city. The Wantijpark, Merwesteynpark (including deer park) and Weizigtpark create a real countryside feeling with their ancient trees, ponds and flower borders. The Weizigtpark has the Weizigt Nature and Environment centre, with a city farm, landscaped gardens and an aquarama. If you want to take the bike out of town, across the island and into the countryside, it is easy to map out an attractive route. The road markings of the regional cycling network are clear and simple. It is easy to adapt the route as you go.

in and out. In the past, people accessed the city by water. Nowadays, the Achterom, once an insignificant alley, is the welcoming entry to the city centre. Roads and rivers intersect near Dordrecht. Its central location provides excellent accessi-bility from all directions. Dordrecht is situated on the A16 motorway, which is the road connecting Paris, Brussels and Breda in the south to Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam in the north. Train passengers take the same north-south route and have the luck of disembarking in the city centre. International trains, except the Thalys, also stop in Dordrecht.

The A15 motorway from the west provides direct access to the east of the country and to Germany. The train can also take you eastwards: the Merwede-Linge line takes pas-sengers from Dordrecht via Sliedrecht, Gorinchem and Leerdam to Geldermalsen and further. An indispensable link between the A16 and A15 is the N3, which routes the traffic past the southern outskirts of Dordrecht. The water-ways are no less busy. Inland vessels, tugs and tug-pushed dumb barges, sailing yachts and water buses form just some of the traffic on the Dordtse Kil, Oude Maas, Noord and Merwede rivers. You never need to get bored on the quay: there is always something happening!

Getting about by water. Water buses provide a rapid and comfortable connection between Dordrecht, Zwijndrecht, Papendrecht and Sliedrecht. They are very popular for cyclists and pedestrians. There is even a water bus route between Dordrecht and Rotterdam that also stops in Alblasserdam.

Cars have limited access to the centre of Dordrecht. Drivers can best park their cars in one of the parking garages. Signs indicate the parking route. The free car parks at the Energiehuis and Weeskinderendijk are a ten to fifteen-minute walk from the centre. However, you never have to wait long for a bus to the heart of the city. It‘s only a ten-minute walk from Dordrecht Central Station to the inner city. Bus line 10 takes you there and also stops near the Grote Kerk, the Visbrug and the Groothoofd.

And with all these possibilities to get into the city, it is just as easy to get out. For instance, take the water bus to Rotterdam, to see the contrast between the historic harbour city of Dordrecht and the modern mainport of Rotterdam. Or sail to the Hollandse Biesbosch, the water bus also stops there. In the immediate vicinity of Dordrecht are the Alblasserwaard and Hoeksche Waard, polders sur-rounded by dikes, with brooks and rivers, mills, charming villages and (fortified) towns. Sounds idyllic, and that‘s exactly what it is! Truly Dutch, green and quiet.

The highpoint in the west of the Alblasserwaard is the World Heritage Kinderdijk. In the lowest part of the polder, there are nineteen windmills, once built to lift the excess water from the polder. They are grouped in two lines along the boezems (storage basins). They are a draw for travellers from all over the world. They stand sturdy and strong amid the reed, water and dikes. If you want to experience the true Holland, this is the place to be.

Over water.Ideal for bicycle rides in the vicinity of Dordrecht: the

bike can go for free on the water bus. Kinderdijk is at a

short cycling distance from the Alblasserdam halt.

living. Who would not want to live in an easily accessible city, with an attractive centre and lots of nature areas and water nearby? Dordrecht, with its historic inner city and a range of districts with a variety of housing styles, is such a place. The city offers a pleasant living climate to more than 120,000 inhabitants. Historic warehouses and stately mansions in the inner city have been restored and converted to meet the needs of living and working. Apartments above the shops in the centre also offer attractive places to live. Where demolition created gaps, modern houses have been built that are in striking con-trast to the historic buildings around them.

Around the historic centre, there are numerous older, new and planned districts. Every district has its own character. In the polder, new districts have been created, such as Stadspolders and De Hoven. In the south of the city, the Sterrenburg district borders the countryside. Contemporary buildings in the Riedijkshaven and Plan Tij make it possible to live on the river. Where previously ships were built will arise the residential and commercial area of Stadswerven. Living, working and teaching come together in new projects including the Gezondheidspark [health park] and Leerpark [learning park].

The pre war district of Krispijn and the post 1950 Wielwijk and Crabbehof districts are being renovated and im-proved. A combination of demolition, new building and renovation, linked to more space for green areas, playing and parking, is giving the districts new vitality. A nice example is the already renovated district Mauvebuurt, a 1920’s garden village, and also the oldest part of Krispijn.

Dordrecht offers the unique combination of rural living with all of the metropolitan facilities. Its good accessibility makes Dordrecht a commuter’s dream.

the open connection to the wantij waterway means that the houses in plan tij are surrounded by tidal water.

working. Dordrecht is an ambitious city. Continually on the move, focused on the future, with creative plans and a clear municipal vision. It has a strong culture of cooperation, both with the surrounding municipalities of the Drechtsteden region, and between companies and organizations. Schools and the business community also work to support each other.

For centuries, the people of Dordrecht have worked as traders, in the shipping sector and in industry. Due to its favourable location, Dordrecht is still an important centre for goods distribution over land and water. The shipbuilding industry was a major employer in the nine-teenth century, but this gradually disappeared in the cen-tury that followed. However, shipping and industry are still of great importance. Nowadays, most of Dordrecht’s inhabitants work in the service sector.

The seaport area deserves special mention. 1795 saw the final end to Dordrecht’s trading privileges. Rotterdam and Amsterdam had outstripped it as a port. Even so, in the mid twentieth century, the city decided to build a seaport. It is the most inland seaport in the Netherlands. Eight thousand inland vessels visit it every year. Currently, Dordrecht is revitalising its seaport area. Developing it further along with related business activities will also create employment.

Being a true trading city, Dordrecht understands the importance of innovation, creativity and a climate that encourages the establishment of new businesses and enterprise. However, Dordrecht also knows that this requires continual attention. This is shown by the de-velopment of Business Park Amstelwijck, the Leerpark [Education park], the Gezondheidsboulevard [Health boulevard] and the improvements to the industrial estates. These projects broaden the economic structure and create employment. For all businesses, both large and small, the Ondernemersloket [Business portal] is the central point of contact.

These group packages combine getting to know Dordrecht and its surroundings with excellent activities. Consider city walks, boat trips, cooking, percussion and dance workshops, lunches and diners, food and drink tasting or a visit to a mu-seum. A wide range of excursions are available, from active and adventurous to convivial and comfortable, from exclu-sive and special to traditional. The group reservation depart-ment of the VVV offers a brochure full of opportunities and will tailor a programme for groups of twenty or more on re-quest. Please call for more information: +31 (0)78-632 2422.

Individual visitors can familiarize themselves with the city at Intree Dordrecht, the reception and information centre of the city. Here the VVV provides information and sells books, maps, guides and souvenirs. There are routes available for city and shopping walks. The VVV also offers an inexpensive programme that allows individual visitors to enjoy a com-plete day out in Dordrecht.

Dordrecht and the surroundings offer more than can be seen in a single day. The majority of people add a night out to the day out. In the centre there are a number of good hotels, as there are in the outskirts of the city and in the Biesbosch. The city and its surroundings also offer many small-scale places to stay, for instance bed & breakfast accommodation and apartments. An exceptional place to stay the night is Villa Augustus on the site of the former waterworks. Here, encir-cled by gardens, is the nineteenth century water tower that has been converted into a hotel. The pumping station serves as a cafe-restaurant. No less exceptional is the locationof the Bellevue Groothoofdspoort hotel, offering excel-lent overnight accommodation and food.

All accommodation addresses can be found in the tourist ABC at the back of this brochure. Up to date and supplemen-tary information is available at www.vvvdordrecht.nl.
