Important Samohi construction update!

A s we approach the holidays, the Samohi BB Site team has been hard at work getting our campus ready for the start of construction on the Science and Technology Quad, which is scheduled to break ground over the upcoming holiday break. When students, teachers, staff, and

administrators return to Samohi on January 4, 2012, here are a few things that they can expect to find:

ParkingThe North Lot will be closed to student

parking and over half of the faculty, staff, and administration parking. Parking will be avail-able to students on Fourth Street at the Civic Center Parking garage. Students and families can purchase a monthly parking pass for $82.50 or a daily parking pass for $9.00 per day.

parking and school access on the Samohi Parking Link which can be found on the Samohi website: www.samohi.smmusd.org.

Short-Term Visitor ParkingThere will be 10 spaces available for short-

term visitor parking adjacent to the tennis courts at the Olympic entrance to campus. A security officer will monitor the spaces during school hours. Please park only in the designated visitor parking spaces.

Event ParkingAll events, including athletic, arts, and school-

wide events will have specific parking and access plans that will be posted on the Samohi Parking Link on the Samohi website and communicated through PTSA and PALS email blasts. If you are not a member of these email sites, now is a good time to become one! Go to the Parent Page on the Samohi website for details on how to join. Stay informed about what is going on at Samohi!

Finally, please consider alternative modes of transportation for your students and your family — Big Blue Bus, biking, and walking are some of the best ways to get to Samohi.

Remember, we all need to be working together to support this construction period as the results will be fantastic for our school and students for generations to come.

The holiday season is upon us!

O ur new College & Career Center is coming soon…I hope! At Samohi, we are fortu-nate to have dedicated and hard-working

College and Career Counselors. Our three College Counselors help students and their parents to navigate the college application system and access information about post-secondary educa-

tion and our Career Counselor helps with career training opportu-nities. In examining our student services, I have come to realize that no matter how dedicated our Counselors are, they do not have all the tools necessary to provide

top-tier services to your students. Your children deserve the best and most efficient service avail-able. We want to join other outstanding high schools that send their materials and transcripts electronically, so our students can get college acceptances back as early as possible.

Our Counselors have visited other state-of-the-art college centers and gathered advice from multiple universities about how we can serve Samohi students better. We have also talked with many parents of past and current seniors to understand what they appreciate about their college application experience and collected suggestions for improvement. We now have a plan to turn two classrooms into one wonderful center that will benefit all students beginning in their freshman year and be a resource to their parents.

What is it going to take? A holiday miracle! I need your support. Our current estimate for the transformation (which includes facilities, tech-nology, and software) is approximately $50,000. Samohi has $12,000 in the facilities budget, PTSA has contributed $10,000 toward technology,

and one of our Samohi families has donated the furniture. I estimate we will need an additional $28,000 to get the new College & Career Center up and running by the end of January, 2012. If this is a project you would like to help make a reality, you may make any size donation to the PTSA and designate it for the new College & Career Center.

The holiday season is a time of celebration and provides us all with the opportunity to be thankful for a multitude of things. I am thankful for all members of the Samohi community—that includes you! On behalf of the entire staff I would like to wish all of you a joyous holiday season!

Keeping up with the PTSA

A s we close another year, I look forward to seeing what 2012 might deliver to Samohi. On the financial front, we are

holding our collective breath with regard to what Sacramento has in store for us in January. We are expecting mid-year cuts, based on what we know our state has endured this fiscal year. On the positive financial side, we are engaged as a school district community in an emotional but neces-sary conversation about how we can all work together to raise the financial and academic bar for all the students in our District, regard-less of which school they attend.

We have settled in with our new Superinten-dent Sandy Lyon and our new Samohi principal Laurel Fretz and are so lucky to have added both of them to our district’s administrative pool. With these two forward-thinking leaders at the helm of our District and our school respectively, we have a great chance of making serious strides into improving the academic excellence we expect for all our students.

By the beginning of our next semester, we should see the opening of our new expanded College Center in the Business Building. This is a fine example of how community, school and PTSA can work together to bring a substantial change to our school, one that has the poten-tial to reach all our students. Please stop by in February and join us in celebrating the kinds of successes that collaboration can bring to Samohi.

S amohi’s Site Governance is a shared deci-sion-making body that forms and imple-ments policies to promote the school’s

vision and reflect the District’s goals. Members of Site Governance consist of teachers (SMMCTA), classified staff (SEIU), administration, students, parents and community. Representatives are elected to a two-year term. Site Governance Council typically meets the third Tuesday of each month from 4:00 to 6:00 PM in room T104 at 601 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, CA.

Happy Birthday Y+YY

O ne year ago, the voters of Santa Monica overwhelmingly approved Propositions Y and YY, creating a new source of revenue

for both our local schools and for the City of Santa Monica to maintain vital services and programs. Santa Monica City Manager Rod Gould projects that the dollars generated in the first year from the new half cent transaction and use tax will surpass initial estimates, resulting in our schools receiving as much as $6 million—about a quarter million more than anticipated. The tax went into effect on April 1, 2011.

Community for Excellent Public Schools (CEPS), a Santa Monica-based political action committee whose mission is to advocate for more resources for our schools, held a celebra-tion of the anniversary of the measures’ passage. Superintendent Sandy Lyon, a keynote speaker at the celebration, expressed great appreciation to the community and reflected on how many deep cuts would have been necessary this school year without this revenue and the other $18 million previously approved by voters or the City Council.

With the California State budget anticipated to fall short of revenue projections for the current year, funding for all schools in the state is expected to be cut even further in 2012. The support of our local community through these additional funding sources allows our district to maintain many programs and curricula that other districts have lost, and provides a robust array of course offerings, arts programs and athletics here at Samohi.

Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation supports Samohi with Academic Enrichment Grants

O nce again, the Education Foundation has awarded Academic Enrichment Grants (AEGs) to teachers throughout the entire

District. Every year, they give grants to enhance classroom learning. This year, the Ed Foundation awarded AEGs to four teachers at Samohi:

Elmo Document Camera with LCD Light (Tina Ustation)

This grant will purchase an Elmo Projector to increase visual instruction in the SAI English 11th and 12th grade classes, which is essential for students who have a diverse range of learning needs, where the teacher practices differentiated teaching methods.

Leadership Curriculum (Veronica Garcia-Hecht)

The Leadership/Associated Student Body (ASB) class will be reading textbooks purchased by this grant to enhance their leadership quali-ties and character. Students will read and analyze these books, and then apply information and practices from them.

Spanish: The “Real World” Comes to the Classroom (Kelly Bates)

A projector will be purchased to enable 10th grade Spanish students to watch videos in Span-ish to improve their language skills. Students will be exposed to everyday Spanish as spoken by native speakers in connection with all curricular

areas. These videos help even beginner Spanish learners easily navigate “natural” Spanish.

Updated World Regions Classroom Maps (Adrienne Karyadi)

This grant will update classroom map resources for effective instructional use, improv-ing 10th grade students’ geographic literacy. Students will work on the erasable wall-mounted maps to show understanding of geographical regions and historical events, improving their retention of material.

Ed Ahead Summer ProgramEd Ahead is a for-credit, fee-based high school

summer school where students complete a one-year curriculum in a subject in just six weeks. The program is extremely rigorous. However, it is a great opportunity for students who want to create room in their schedules during the school year for other academic and extracurricular pursuits. In summer 2011, over 160 students participated in four Ed Ahead courses at Samohi: World History (two classes), U.S. History (two classes), Ceramics and Digital Design.

The Education Foundation is currently planning the 2012 Ed Ahead program. Stay tuned for more details! As always, the Education Foundation offers a significant number of scholarships to students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program.

School Board equity policy update

A t the August 10, 2011, Board meeting, the Board directed me to investigate districts that had successful district-wide

fundraising efforts, to examine their policies and practices, and to make a recommendation to the Board regarding changes that would need to be made in practice and/or policy to assist in centrally raising funds to benefit all students in our district.

In examining this issue I learned that each of our schools’ PTAs currently raises money for everything from supplies and assemblies to staff salaries and teacher professional development. What each school is able to raise varies greatly. This extra funding is used to pay for supplies and programs as well as hourly and yearly pay for support and instructional staff. The extreme example is one school raising $65 per student for salaries and one school raising over $1000 per student. Many schools spend between $150–400 per student on salaries.

I also discovered that districts for which foun-dations raised the most funds have policies and practices that require that any money used for

school personnel be raised through a centralized education foundation to ensure program parity. The consistent expression I found was that the Education Foundations raise money for “staff” while PTAs continue to raise money for “stuff” (field trips, assemblies, supplies, etc.). Some districts have been using this model for years; others have shifted recently. For these districts, the same issue and concern of equitable access to instructional programming during the school day was a driving force behind their move to centralized fundraising. In all instances, after the shift in fundraising focus, the foundations raised more money than ever before and programs and staff were preserved and offered equitably at each school.

The Board received my recommendation on November 3, 2011, and discussed it again on November 17. I essentially recommended that the Board approve the above-mentioned policy change: staff and professional develop-ment moneys will now be raised centrally. The Board voted unanimously to pass the policy on November 29.

I also proposed to the Board that, should they pass the policy change, I establish a Superin-tendent’s Advisory Group (with PTA, Education Foundation, district staff, community members) at the table to investigate how the success-ful districts made the transition and to work with me to draft our implementation strategy. Ultimately, I would like to present a plan to the Board by June, 2012, with a one year window for implementation, possibly beginning Fall 2013, targeting elementary first with secondary follow-ing later.

Clearly there are many details to be worked out and I am confident that we have the creative and dedicated minds to craft a plan that works for our district, ensuring that all Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District students have access to a parity of program during the instruc-tional day. We will create a plan that is flexible, allows for defined autonomy at the schools, is transparent, accountable and one that benefits all students who attend school in our district.

Students reflect on what “diversity means….”

C ongratulations to the 18 Samohi students who participated in PTSA’s national art competition, Reflections. We know every-

one is busy, so it’s really impressive when people take the time to share their talents. The winning work is now competing with other students in our District, and hopefully will go on to the next level of competition. A huge thank-you goes to our dedicated team of professionals who took the time to thoughtfully judge the diverse and creative entries. Judges this year were: Jolene Hansen, curator, G2 Gallery, Venice, CA; Joyce Lieberman, artist; Tsutomo Carton, musician; and the publisher and staff of the Santa Monica Daily Press. Thanks also to Julie Honda, Mary Eikenbary, Catherine Baxter, and Maryanne Solo-mon for making everything run smoothly.

The 2011/12 PTSA Reflections Arts partici-pants interpreted this year’s theme “Diversity means…” through Literature (Hanna Biabani, 1st place; Walela Makonnen, 2nd place; Tianru Wang, 3rd place; Chloe Meshel-Wood, Honorable Mention; Julio Escarce; Ilana Greenberg; Raven-Alexis Koné; Autumn Moore), Musical Composi-tion (Natasha Janfaza), Photography (Nikki Bell, 1st place; Ariel Naim, 2nd place; Carly Fried-man; Annie Quine; Nicholas Saito) and Visual Art (Alison Guh, 1st place; Gabriela Curiel, 2nd place; Christy Daugherty, Honorable Mention; Amanda Concors). All the work will be exhibited in January.


College and Career Center Reminders for Seniors

A s we approach the holiday season, it is important to take time to reflect on this year’s many accomplishments. In doing

so we must keep in mind that some of the school year’s greatest challenges lie before us: SAT’s and ACT’s, CST’s, 10th Grade’s first CAHSEE, and AP testing. It is a great time to celebrate our successes and refocus ourselves for the chal-lenges ahead. There are still a few weeks left; time to make significant positive changes. Call or email your student’s teachers if grades aren’t what you expect, and see what you can do to help. If you have not yet been able to access grades online, please contact your house advisor, or your house principal.

Our S House Fall Festival was a great day with tons of fun, games, food, and friends! We look forward to our next event January 27th when we have the S House Winter Block Party. Thank you to the parents who contributed to the O House Hall-O-ween Hangout and ‘I Scream’ event, and to the 9th Annual O House breakfast. Fall CIF: Samohi entered the fall CIF playoffs with 100% participation by all sports! Football CIF had a 9-1 record, league championship, and top 5 ranking in CIF. Coach Travis Clark’s team entered the fray with an unblemished Ocean League record, for our first home game in ten years. Coach Liane Sato’s Girls Volleyball team was Ocean League Champion and traveled over 400 miles for final games. The Cross Country team participated in CIF prelims, led by Alice Wasserman with a time of 6:08 in the mile, and Arden Lassalle, who registered a 5:22 mile. Coach Flanders’ Water Polo qualified for first round participation. After having seen both boys and girls Tennis advance to CIF last year, 2011 kicked off with much anticipation. As of the time this publication went to print, the Girls Tennis team and coach Wilston Poon had advanced to CIF semifinals.

Tryouts: Reminder that if your child is trying out for a team, they need to have a physical in advance, and fill out the sports

application packet.Thank you: Major recent athletics renova-

tions include new synthetic turf on the track and field site, painting of the North locker room, and the soon to be refurbished Baseball field. Thank you to the district, Terry Kamibiyashi, Dennis Chavez, Bill McCarthy, Rikki Binder, Lar Bjorum, Ms. Baxter and Stuart Sam for leadership, and to the City of Santa Monica and SMMUSD. Thanks to Linda Greenberg Gross and Rachel Faulkner, for their expert leadership in the Santa Monica 5K, a tremendous success. Athletes, faculty, staff and community ran, with much of the proceeds going directly to indi-vidual sports. In this cash strapped environ-ment, Santa Monica-Malibu Education Founda-tion came through again for our students. Tim Leary and Tyler Skaggs were on hand to start the race, and to hand out awards at the end. Special thanks to Mrs. Hollie Tirrell, MS ATC, our athletic trainer, who has been amazing in heal-ing our athletes.

THE SAMOHI JAZZ BANDS are gearing up for several spring perfor-

mances including Stairway of the Stars and a trip to compete in The Reno Jazz Festival at the end of April — the largest on the West Coast. Mark your calendars for Thursday, January 26, when Andy Martin is the guest trombone soloist. He’s a regular with the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band and is considered one of the best in the world. S amohi’s Cheerleaders continue their tradi-tion of excellence, taking second place at CIF in November! During the Summer

Cheer Intensive in Palm Springs, these highly skilled athletes took several first-place trophies as they competed against a multitude of other West Coast schools. Another highlight for our 70+ cheerleading squad included an audience-packed showcase at Universal City Walk, promot-ing the new, hot musical “Bring It On!”

During the next six months, under the disciplined leadership of coach Amy Meadors, Pep Squad will offer ultra-stiff competition to their opponents at the USA Regionals, the UCA and USA Nationals, as well as the West Coast Championships. We wish them all of the best as they focus their high-spirited energy on adding more wins to their already impressive collection of trophies!

2012 Grad Nite Destination: Jamaica!

O n June 14, upholding a twenty-one year tradition, the graduates of Samohi and Olympic are invited to attend an all-night

celebration on campus. Grad Nite depends on the dedication of a group of parents forming the Steering Committee, who plan and work year-round, as well as hundreds of parents who work as “crew” before, during and after the event. The following positions on our Steering Committee are open: Illustrator for artwork, Banners, Boat Construction, Cleanup, Food: Grads, Food: Work Crews, Rentals co-chair, Set Design/Prep, and Ticket Sales co-chair. I would also like to thank the administration since through these meetings we were able to establish a dialogue and improve communication with the principals and counselors of each of the houses. Illuminate system: Light at the end of the tunnel

T he Illuminate Student Information System has gone through some growing pains at Santa Monica High School but is begin-

ning to come into its own. We can now report that better than 60% of parents are registered through the parent portal and have been view-ing their student’s grades on a regular basis. If you are still having trouble please contact your student’s advisor for assistance. Problems that have been reported with transcripts and grade reporting on the progress reports are being recti-fied daily. Very soon we will be rolling out access to the student portal so that all students will be able to check the status of their own grades. We recognize that change is difficult and not always fun. We, as always, thank you for your patience and communication.

M ientras llegan los días festivos, el equipo de BB de Samohi ha estado traba-jando para preparar la escuela para la construcción de la Plaza de Ciencia y Tecnología, la cual está programa para empezar durante la próxima vacación de días festivos. Cuando los estudiantes, maestros, personal, y administra-

dores regresen a Samohi el 4 de enero, 2012, aquí pueden ver algunas de las cosas que pueden encontrarán:

EstacionamientoEl estacionamiento del norte estará cerrado

para estacionamiento para los estudiantes y más de la mitad de estacionamiento para la facultad, personal, y administración. El estacionamiento para estudiante estará disponible en el garaje de la calle Cuatro en el ayuntamiento de la ciudad. Los estudiantes y las familias pueden comprar un pase mensual de estacionamiento por $82.50 o pase diario de estacionamiento por $9.00 por día.

¡La temporada de días festivos llega!

N uestro nuevo Centro de Universidad & Carrera viene pronto…¡Yo espero! En Samohi, tenemos la suerte de tener

consejeros en el Centro de Universidad & Carrera que son dedicados y trabajadores. Nuestros tres consejeros de universidad ayudan a los estudiantes y sus padres a navegar el sistema de solicitud y

tener acceso a informa-ción sobre la educación después de la preparato-ria y nuestros consejeros de universidad asisten en oportunidades para entrenamiento de carreras. Al examinar los servicios para los estudiantes, he realizado que no importa que

tan dedicado sean los consejeros, ellos no tienen las herramientas necesarias para proveer los mejores servicios a nuestros estudiantes. Sus niños merecen el mejor y más eficiente servicio que hay disponible. Deseamos ser como las sobresa-lientes preparatorias que envían sus materiales y expedientes electrónicamente, para que nuestros estudiantes puedan recibir las aceptaciones de la universidad lo más pronto posible.

Nuestros consejeros han visitado centros de universidades modernos y recibieron consejos de múltiple universidades sobre cómo mejor servir los estudiantes en Samohi. Si este es un proyecto que usted desea hacer una realidad, puede hacer una contribución de cualquier tamaño a la PTSA y designarlo a el nuevo Centro de Universidad & Carrera.

M ientras cerramos el año, espero ver lo que el año 2012 le puede traer a Samohi. En el frente financiero, tenemos la respiración

colectivamente parada esperando lo Sacramento nos trae en enero. Creemos que vamos a tener cortes de medio año, basado en lo que ya sabe-mos de lo que el estado ha sufrido durante el año fiscal. En el lado positivo de las finanzas, estamos involucrados como una comunidad del distrito escolar en una emocio-nante pero necesaria conversación sobre cómo podemos trabajar juntos para aumentar el beneficio financiero y académico para todos los estudiantes en el distrito, sin importar a cual escuela asisten.

Estamos de acuerdo con la nueva Superin-tendente Sandy Lyon y nuestra nueva Directora de Samohi Laurel Fretz y tenemos la suerte de haberla adicionado a ellas a nuestro grupo administrativo. U n año atrás, los votantes de Santa Mónica por gran mayoría aprobaron la Propuesta Y & YY, creando una nueva fuente de recursos

para ambos nuestras escuelas locales y para que la Ciudad de Santa Mónica mantenga sus servi-cios y programas. El administrador municipal de Santa Mónica Rod Gould proyecta que los dólares generado en el primer año de las transacciones del medio centavo y el impuesto de uso pasará los estimados iniciales, resultando en que nuestras escuelas reciban tanto como $6 millones—case un cuarto de millón de dólares más que lo que se anti-cipó. El impuesto tomó efecto el 1 de abril, 2011.

Comunidad para Excelentes Escuelas Públicas (Community for Excellent Public Schools -CEPS), un grupo de acción política basado en Santa Mónica lo cual tiene la misión de abogar para más recursos para nuestras escuelas, tubo una celebración en el aniversario del pase de la medida. La Superinten-dente Sandy Lyon, oradora especial en la celebra-ción, expresó una gran apreciación hacia la comuni-dad y reflejó en cuantos profundos cortes hubieran sido necesario este año escolar sin estos recursos y los otros $18 millones previamente aprobado por los votantes o la municipalidad.

Con la anticipación de cortes en los ingresos del presupuesto del Estado de California este año escolar, se espera que haya cortes en los fondos de todas las escuelas en el estado y más en el 2012. El apoyo de nuestra comunidad local mediante estos fondos adicionales permite que nuestro distrito pueda mantener muchos de los programas y cursos que otros distritos han perdido, y proveen una gama de cursos, programas de artes y deportes aquí en Samohi.


La Fundación Educativa de Santa Mónica-Malibú apoya a Samohi con Becas de Enriquecimiento Académico

O tra vez, la Fundación Educativa a otorgado Becas de Enriquecimiento Académico (AEGs) a maestros en todo el distrito. Todos los

años, otorgan becas para aumentar el aprendizaje en los salones de clase. Este año, la Fundación Educativa otorgó AEG a cuatro maestros de Samohi:

Camera de Documento Elmo con Luz LCD (Tina Ustation)

Esta beca comprará un Proyector Elmo para aumentar la instrucción visual en la clase de inglés SAI en los grados 11 y 12, los cuales son esenciales para los estudiantes que tienen una diversidad de gama las necesidades de aprendizaje, cuando los maestros práctica métodos de enseñanza diferen-ciada.

Currículo de Liderazgo (Veronica Garcia-Hecht)

La clase del Cuerpo de Liderazgo/Estudiantes Asociados (ASB) leerán de textos comprados por las becas para aumentar las cualidades de liderazgo y carácter. Los estudiantes leerán y analizarán estos libros y luego aplicarán la información y prácticas.

Español: El “Mundo Real” viene al Salón de Clase (Kelly Bates)

Se comprará un proyector para que los estudian-tes de español en el grado 10 puedan ver videos en español para mejorar sus destrezas de lenguaje. Los estudiantes estarán expuestos al español diario como es hablado por los nativos en el idioma en conexión en todas las aéreas Estos video ayudan hasta los principiantes en español y fácilmente los ayuda a navegar el español “natural”.

Regiones Mundiales Realizadas para los Mapas de Aulas (Adrienne Karyadi)

Esta beca pondrá al día los recursos de mapas de salones de clase para el uso efectivo en la instruc-ción, mejorando el entendimiento geográfico de los estudiantes en el 10º grado. Los estudiantes traba-jarán en los mapas borrables montados en la pared para demostrar el entendimiento de las regiones geográficas y eventos histórico, así mejorando la retención de la materia.

Programa de Verano Ed Ahead Ed Ahead es escuela de verano en el cual se

recibe crédito y es basado en cuotas donde los estudiantes completan un curso una materia de un año en solamente seis semanas. El programa es sumamente riguroso. Pero es una gran oportunidad para los estudiantes que desean crear espacio en su horario durante el año y así tomar un curso acadé-mico o extracurricular. En el verano 2011, más de 160 estudiantes participaron en cuarto cursos de Ed Ahead en Samohi: Historia Mundial (dos clases), Historia de los EE.UU., Cerámicas y Diseño Digital.

Actualización de la Mesa Directiva sobre la póliza de equidad

E n la reunión de la Mesa Educativa del 10 de agosto, la Mesa me pidió que investigara distritos que tenían éxito en sus esfuerzos de

recaudación de fondos centralizado, que examinara sus pólizas y prácticas, y que haga una recomen-dación a la Mesa referente a cambios que se deben hacer en práctica y/o póliza para asistir en centrali-zar los fondos recaudado para el beneficio de todos los estudiantes en nuestro distrito

Al examinar este asunto aprendí que en cada escuela actualmente la PTA recauda dinero para todo, desde materiales y asambleas a salarios para personal escolar y desarrollo profesional para los maestros. Lo que cada escuela puede recaudar varia enormemente. Esta recaudación extra es usada para pagar por materiales y programas al igual que pagos por horas y anual para personal de apoyo e instrucción. El ejemplo en extremo es que una escuela recauda $65 por estudiante para salarios y una escuela recauda más de $1000 por estudiante. Muchas escuelas usan entre $150–400 por estudiantes en salarios.

También descubrí que en los distritos donde las fundaciones recaudan más fondos tienen pólizas y

prácticas que requieren que cualquier dinero usado para el personal de la escuela debe ser recaudado mediante una fundación educativa centralizada para así asegurar igualdad de programas. La expresión consistente que encontré fue que la Fundaciones Educativas recaudaba dinero para el personal mientras que la PTA continuaba recaudando para otras cosas (excursiones, asambleas, materiales, etc.). Algunos distritos han estado usando este modelo por años; otros cambiaron recientemente. Para estos distritos, el mismo tema y preocupación sobre la equidad en acceso a programas de instruc-ción durante el día escolar fue el ímpetu detrás del cambio hacia la centralización de fondos. En todos los instantes, después del cambio en el foco de la recaudación, la fundaciones recaudaron más dinero que antes y los programas y el personal pudieron ser preservados y ofrecido igualmente a cada escuela.

La Mesa Directiva recibió mi recomendación el 3 de noviembre, 2011, y lo discutió de nuevo el 17 de noviembre. Yo esencialmente recomendé que la Mesa aprobara lo ya mencionado como cambio a la póliza: Dinero para el personal escolar y desarrollo profe-sional serán recaudado centralmente. La Mesa tomó

acción en la recomendación el 29 de noviembre..También propuse, que si la Mesa pasa los

cambios en la póliza, que yo establezca un Grupo Asesor al Superintendente (con la PTA, Fundación Educativa, personal del distrito, miembros de la comunidad) para investigar cómo los distritos que tienen éxito hicieron la transición y para trabajar conmigo en planear una estrategia de implemen-tación. Al final, me gustaría presentar un plan a la Mesa en junio 2012, con un periodo de un año para ponerlo en práctica posiblemente al comienzo del otoño 2013, comenzando con las escuelas prima-rias y siguiendo con el secundario más tarde.

Claramente hay muchos detalles en el cual hay que trabajar y estoy segura que tenemos las mentes más creativas y dedicadas para hacer un plan que funcione para nuestro distrito, asegurando que todos los estudiantes en el Distrito Unificado de Santa Mónica-Malibú tengan acceso a la igualdad en programas durante la instrucción del día. Crea-remos un plan que sea flexible, permita autonomía definida en la escuela, sea transparente, responsa-ble y uno que beneficie a todos los estudiantes que asisten a las escuelas de nuestro distrito.

F elicitamos a los 18 estudiantes de Samohi que participaron en la competencia nacional de arte de la PTSA, Reflexiones. Sabemos que

todos estamos ocupados, así es que es bastante impresionante cuando las personas toman tiempo para compartir su talento. El trabajo ganador ya está completo con otros estudiantes en el distrito, y esperamos que llegue al próximo nivel de la competencia. Enorme gracias a nuestro dedicado equipo de profesionales los cuales tomaron el tiempo como jurado de las diversas entradas. Los jueves este año fueron: Jolene Hansen, curator, G2 Gallery, Venice, CA; Joyce Lieberman, artista; Tsutomo Carton, músico; y el editor y personal del periódico Santa Monica Daily Press. Gracias también a Julie Honda, Mary Eikenbary, Catherine Baxter, y Maryanne Solomon por hacer que todo funcionara bien.

Los participantes de la Reflexión de Arte 2011/12 de la PTSA interpretaron el tema de este año “la diversidad significa…” mediante la literatura (Hanna Biabani, 1r premio; Walela Makonnen, 2º premio; Tianru Wang, 3º premio; Chloe Meshel-Wood, Mención Honorable; Julio Escarce; Ilana Greenberg; Raven-Alexis Koné; Autumn Moore), Composición Musical (Natasha Janfaza), Photogra-phy (Nikki Bell, 1r premio; Ariel Naim, 2º premio; Carly Friedman; Annie Quine; Nicholas Saito) y Artes Visuales (Alison Guh, 1r premio; Gabriela Curiel, 2º premio; Christy Daugherty, Mención Honorable; Amanda Concors). M ientras nos preparamos para los días festivos, quiero recordarles a todos los exámenes finales y el final del primer

semestre llega una semana más temprano que el año pasado (la semana del 16 de enero). Usando tiempo durante las vacaciones para que se asegure que los estudiantes terminen asignaciones que han faltado, proyectos, o que se mantengan al día con su lectura. ¡Llegaron los deportes de invierno!

Otoño CIF: En Samohi comenzaron los desem-pates CIF ¡con 100% de participación por todos los deportes! Fútbol CIF tiene un record de 9-1, en campeonatos de la liga, y clasificación en los mejores 5 en CIF. El equipo del entrenador Travis Clark entró con un record perfecto a la liga de Ocean, para el primer juego de casa en 10 años. El equipo de la entrenadora Liane Sato Baloncesto de Hembras fueron campeonas de la liga Ocean y viajaron más de 400 millas para los juegos finales. El equipo de Campo Atraves participó en CIF, encabezado por Alice Wasserman con un tiempo de 6:08 en la milla, y Arden Lassalle, quien hizo la milla en 5:22. El Polo Acuático del entrenador Flanders cualificó por el la primera ronda de parti-cipación. Después de haber visto a ambos Tenis de hembras y barones avanzar a CIF el año pasado, el 2011 empezó con mucha participación. En la fecha de publicación de este boletín, el equipo de Tenis de las Hembras y el entrenador Wilston Poon ha avanzado a los semifinales de CIF.

Gracias al distrito, Terry Kamibiyashi, Dennis Chavez, Bill McCarthy, Rikki Binder, Lar Bjorum, Ms. Baxter y Stuart Sam por su liderazgo, y a la Ciudad de Santa Mónica y SMMUSD. Gracias a Linda Greenberg Gross y Rachel Faulkner, por su experto liderazgo en Santa Mónica 5K, un gran éxito. Atle-tas, facultad, personal y la comunidad corrieron, con la mayoría de la recaudación yendo directa-mente a deportes individuales. En este ambiente donde hace falta dinero, la Fundación Educativa de Santa Mónica-Malibú nos ayudó otra vez para nuestros estudiantes. Tim Leary y Tyler Skaggs estuvieron a mano para comenzar la corrida, y para entregar los premios al final. Gracias especiales a la Sra. Hollie Tirrell, MS ATC, nuestra entrenadora de deportes, quien ha sido maravillosa en curar a nuestros atletas.

Él es un regular en la Banda de Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band y es considerado un de los mejores en el mundo. L as Animadoras (cheerleaders) de Samohi continúan su excelente tradición! Durante la Intensiva Animación de Verano en Palm

Springs, estas sumamente expertas atletas se gana-ron varios trofeos de primer premio, competiendo en contra de una multitud de escuelas de la costa del oeste.

Otro evento sobresaliente del equipo de más de 70 animadoras incluye la demostración en Univer-sal City Walk con un enorme público, promoviendo el popular musical “Bring It On!”

L a Donación Anual ha dedicado una porción de la contribución para la tecnología que moder-nizará el Centro de Universidad, y mejorar la

2012 la Destinación de la Fiesta de Graduados ‘Grad Nite’: ¡Jamaica!

E l 14 de junio, teniendo una tradición de 21 años, los estudiantes que se gradúan de Samohi y Olympic están invitados para

asistir una celebración que dura toda la noche en la escuela. La Fiesta de Graduados ‘Grad Nite’ depende de la dedicación de grupo de padres que forman los Comités de Trabajo, que planean y trabajan todo el año al igual que cientos de padres los cuales trabajan como equipo antes, durante y después del evento. L es quiero agradecer por su participación en las juntas que hemos tenido este año escolar. Es muy importante estar en comunicación

Sistema Illuminate: Luz al fin del túnel

E l sistema de Información del Estudiante ha tenido dificultades en su desarrollo en Santa Monica High School pero ya está normalizán-

dose. Podemos reportar que el 60% de los padres se han inscrito mediante el portal de padres y han estado consultando las calificaciones de sus estudiantes regularmente. Si tiene alguna dificultad por favor contacte al consejero de su estudiante para recibir asistencia. Los problemas que se han reportado con los expedientes y el reporte de las calificaciones se están corrigiendo diariamente. Muy pronto estaremos adicionando el portal de los estudiantes para que todos los estudiantes puedan chequear el estado de sus propias calificaciones. Sabemos que el cambio es difícil y no siempre es divertido. Siempre les damos las gracias por su paciencia y comunicación.

Si no ha inscrito la cuenta de Illuminate de su estudiante, hágalo inmediatamente para que pueda chequear las calificaciones y la asistencia de su estudiante. Si necesitó crear un correo electrónico, asegúrese que el consejero la tenga para poder generar un código de acceso.

Las familias de noveno y decimo grado marque esta fecha, sábado, 28 de enero. Los conseje-ros estarán haciendo presentaciones sobre los requisitos de graduación de la preparatoria y los requerimientos para entrar a la universidad antes de comenzar la reunión para el Plan de Cuatro Años para las familia en el 9º y 10º grados.

S amohi Solar Alliance and the PTSA, together with the Facilities Improve-ment Program, provided much appreciated leadership and support to the eager cyclists who came pedaling to school in spite of the

torrential downpour! Thank you all for your great spirits!With the impending construction at Samohi, and the

walking & biking movement rolling along steadily, coordina-tors are launching “Car Free Friday,” starting immediately after winter break. SMMUSD students are encouraged to use alternative means of transportation on Fridays as a sign of environmental solidarity and to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, all while having fun and keeping fit. todos por su enorme espíritu! Con el inminente plan de construcción de Samohi, y el despliego del movi-

miento de ‘Ciclistas & Caminantes’ (Bike it! Walk it! ), los coordinadores están preparando “Viernes sin Carros”, comenzando inmediatamente al regreso de las vacaciones de invierno. Se les anima a los estudiantes de SMMUSD de usar medios alternativos de transportación los viernes como apoyo solidario al ambiente y para reducir la congestión de tráfico y polución al mismo tiempo divertirse y mantenerse en forma.
