On city street corners, around telephone posts, through barbed wire fences, and over abandoned cars, a quiet revolution is brewing. “Knit graffiti” is an international guerrilla movement that started underground and is now embraced by crochet and knitting artists of all ages, nationalities, and genders. Its practitioners create stunning works of art out of yarn, then “donate” them to public spaces as part of a plan for yarn domination.
Yarn Bombing: The Art of Crochet and Knit Graffiti is the definitive guidebook to covert textile street art. This full-color DIY book features 20 kick-ass patterns that range from hanging shoes and knitted picture frames to balaclavas and gauntlets, teaching readers how to create fuzzy adornments for lonely street furniture.
Along the way, it provides tips on how to be as stealthy as a ninja, demonstrates how to orchestrate a large-scale textile project, and offers revealing information neces-sary to design your own yarn graffiti tags.

Undergraduate and graduate students identified, researched,
and tackled these challenges with
unique, sustainable solutions. All
the Student teams were asked to
consider involving all the big communities in devising the solution to the problems at hand.
In partnership with GOOD Magazine, the Academy of Arts

Design mobilized its students to
deploy design to address real problems within the city of London, England.

Part creative community, part arts venue, Village Underground
is a non-profit space for creativity and culture in the heart of
East London. The main Village Underground centre is housed
in a renovated turn-of-the-century warehouse primed for
everything from concerts and club nights to exhibitions, theatre,
live art and other performances. High above Great Eastern
Street, atop the venue, four recycled Jubilee line train carriages
and shipping containers make up the creative studios of
Village Underground.
Village Underground was born of the need for affordable,
environmentally stable studio space for artists in central
London. Originally we explored several sites for the project,
but the Broad Street Rail Viaduct stole our hearts. Built in 1848,
the viaduct had been derelict for over 20 years and had
self seeded into a meadow with trees and wildlife. Along
with the viaduct, we negotiated with Hackney Council to also
take over the then severely derelict Victorian warehouse.

As part of Turku, Finland’s 2011 European Capital of Culture events, Candy was commissioned to create a public art project near the University of Turku. There is a pedestrian/bike path nicknamed Uraputki, or “Career Path”, because it is a popular route that students take from their residences to the university, to get a degree to get a job. To remind students of the larger picture, Candy turned the path into an interactive space with fill-in-the-blank sentences stenciled on the pavement that say
“When I was little I wanted to be ____. Today I want to be ____.” in Finnish, Swedish, and English. Passersby canuse colored chalk to write directly on the pavement and reflect upon their larger life choices. Sun and rain erase the responses and the installation starts again. The project is created with temporary spray chalk and will fade with weather and foot traffic.
