conducted in reverse i.e. the vessel is dropped to pressures exceeding -0.9 bar differential pressure and air is drawn in through the valve choked conditions are seen at the higher pressures recorded the exact choking point of the valves is not as obvious as theory claims it should be. Figures reported at 0.9 bar are maximum flows at choking point of the valve. As per tests conducted by EDA UoM Michigan USA 2013

Flows in red indicate the point at which the valve switches into "Anti-Shock" mode

m3/m = metres cubed per minute @ 20 degrees Celsius and 1.01325 bar absolute

Should the filling rate be excessive or if pump trip conditions are experienced and the columns commence to re-join very rapidly, then the air valve will automatically switch to the "Anti-Shock" mode, using the entrapped air to build up back pressure which will in turn slow down the liquid column. The energy of the potential surge is continuously absorbed and dissipated through the "Anti-Shock" orifice. This orifice will continuously discharge air, as long as there is air trapped in the system. The discharge capabilities of the "Anti-Shock" orifice are given up to 10 bar "'p, as tested by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - South Africa Aero Test 94/140.
