D A N N Y H U N T E R

Today we welcome our good friends from Barrow to Meadow Park. May I wish their directors, manager, players and supporters a pleasant stay with us and a safe journey home.

A PROGRESSREPORT

As I said my goodbyes to 2019, and as we moved into a new decade, I feel I have thankfully demonstrated over the last 10 years an improvement across our small but quietly ambitious community football club. As we entered 2020, my New Year’s message to my staff, my business partners, my dressing room, my sponsors and to you, our supporters, is a consistent one, again it’s about togetherness, patience, unity and about understanding. It’s the self-knowledge that we are an underdog club, who are once again becoming competitive and once again beginning to over achieve. If this new decade matches the last 10 years, then it will be right up my street and will no doubt be just as exciting. As such, I want to thank my long standing partners at Arsenal, Hertsmere Borough Council, the Town Council, Barnet and Southgate College. I must also thank my very loyal sponsors and my long standing supporters for your loyalty, patience, support, unity and togetherness, as we maintained our ethos of attitude, discipline, desire and remain an underdog football club, with quiet ambition. In truth, we endured a frustrating and fragmented end to last season, but thankfully after a lot of soul searching, more than a few sleepless nights, and a lot of hard work, it’s been a far more rewarding last 6 months. In hindsight, when I looked back over the whole of 2019, I actually found far more positives than had first met the eye. We produced another 3 or 4 England College internationals, we were once

again crowned the National Champions of England and Wales at National Youth College level, and we retained the Herts Senior Cup, by beating our under-achieving noisy neighbours St Albans City 1-0 in the final. So, although we finished a very disappointing fifth from bottom last season in the National League, we still had more than a few positives to sustain us and still managed to retain our National League status. For a club of our size and stature, who started the decade in the Ryman League that is no mean achievement. As such, I feel we are still arguably the smallest club to ever establish itself within the National League, while also getting ourselves to a National League Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium. We are now quietly starting to compete again at the top end of the National League table and as an experienced Chairman I believe, along with my staff, that I know how to steer a small football club, when all manner of things get stacked against us……and I feel that is also the case with my more than experienced gaffer Luke Garrard. As I’ve said above, I also know the importance of having family, loyal staff, long standing partners and loyal sponsors because of our adopted small steps policy. We have cultivated trust, friendships, partnerships and long lasting contacts with the likes of education partners Barnet and Southgate College, Arsenal, Hertsmere Borough Council and Borehamwood and Elstree Town Council. In truth, when I negotiated and signed a 10

year extended contract with Arsenal a few years back, it was because I enjoy a great relationship with Arsenal and also with both our Borough and Town Council. These relationships have been pivotal in our progress and led to my enormous optimism......so, if we can perhaps improve our home crowds a tad over the next decade, then who knows where it can take us? These building blocks have taken enormous investment, a gazillion man hours, a million mistakes, and over 21 years, to build. But importantly I feel the money, mistakes and relationships are all vital experiences and learning curves to our future ambitions, and they make me secure in what I’m doing and unlike many of these new owners at poorly run football clubs. It means with a bit more investment going forward, with good leadership, with my loyal staff, with our improved recruitment and with a bit more home support coming through the gate that we’re perhaps ready to have another go at getting ourselves to the next level? Our home support as we all know, never quite reached the levels that I’d perhaps hoped for after we travelled back from Wembley Stadium 18 months ago. But we’ll keep trying to find ways to improve that, I’ll keep trying to make up for our home crowds, by having good business sense and a realistic vision of what I can achieve with good leadership, loyal staff and having a dressing room refocused and with real ambition. I believe with a bit of Lady Luck, we will in the future put our little football club and our town into dreamland - by taking our loyal supporters up Wembley Way once again. I will never forget the feeling and those amazing scenes at Sutton United in May 2018, when we beat them 3-2 with barely 11 fit players, and deservedly earned the right to walk ourselves up Wembley Way. We, of course, went on to lose that Play-Off final to Tranmere Rovers, but not before we’d shared our hopes, our memories and our dreams with each other. Not before we’d witnessed a 4,500

strong Wood Army travelling up Wembley Way and not before we went so close to securing the upset of upsets and booking a place in the English Football League. I believe momentum, confidence and belief is again returning to Meadow Park and I’ve been telling you that consistently in my notes since November. So together if we whisper it quietly, we can perhaps start dreaming of the Promised Land once again? After 21 seasons here in the Chair, I know a week is a lifetime in football, but my hope is that 2020 could be another of those memorable years in our history, and who knows we might remember it forever both on and off the park? Remember, it really has been a decade of underdog memories starting when we went and won the Ryman Premier League Play-Offs by beating a very good Aveley side 1-0 away and then despatched the Play-Off final favourites in Alan Dowson, Martin Tyler and Kingstonian 2-0 here at Meadow Park. I’ll never forget one of my favourite Boreham Wood players of all time, in my very good friend, “God rest his soul” the late, great centre back Ryan Moran, who played over 350 games for me. Also, a newly acquired forward that season in Dewayne Clarke as they scored two of the most important goals ever seen here at Meadow Park, to give us a day to remember and get us to the Conference South for the very first time. Who can ever forget the Conference South Play Off final, the tension and the unbridled joy, as we saw off a very good Whitehawk side after extra time 2-1, with our angry ant Junior Morias getting us the winner? Then there was the little matter of having to win our last three games, to save us from relegation just a year later and again even more scenes down at Welling as we won 3-0 on the final day to keep ourselves in the National League and boy did we party haha.... And at the umpteenth attempt we finally beat a Football League team in the FA Cup. Who can forget that historic day in

Page 4: VS. BARROW AFC...Wembley Way. We, of course, went on to lose that Play-Of inal to Tranmere Rovers, but not before we’d shared our hopes, our memories and our dreams with each other

November 2017 coming back from a goal down to beat Blackpool 2-1 with a very late goal from Dan Holman? Never to be forgotten crazy scenes behind the goal when the winner went in! Having recently played our near neighbours Barnet as a league equal it now shows me we are in reality one of the biggest non-league success stories at our level of football, anywhere in the country over this last decade. When you then take into consideration that we’ve built two fantastic new stands in that time, we’ve found a way to invest and reinvest in year on year stadium improvements in all areas including the catering outlets, the stadium toilets, our new club shop etc, I feel you can see our improvement and my quiet ambition is everywhere? When you look at our brand new floodlights, at our Football League compliant lux readings and when you look at our Football League compliant dugouts, with their customised seats haha, it all quietly tells a story? In truth I still marvel at the new million pound Desso Grassmaster Pitch - which last season won our ground’s team of Declan Robinson and Daniel Hunter the National League “Groundsman of the Year” award........in truth it’s testament to our partnership with Arsenal and what we’ve actually managed to build and achieve here over the last decade. I feel without being condescending, that we’ve left behind most of Hertfordshire’s other similar sized non-league clubs like St Albans City, Hemel Hempstead and Bishops Stortford who, for whatever reason, are perhaps not at our level at present. That becomes more evident when we get the pleasure of welcoming some very big former Football League clubs like Notts County, Hartlepool United, Chesterfield, Wrexham, Stockport County and Barnet to Meadow Park. So when I reflect over this last decade, I’m filled with huge pride and unbelievable memories which I’ll take to the grave, secured with the help of my incredible family, my very loyal staff and

many of our loyal supporters like Phil Jackson, Steve Cook, Craig Wilde and many others.

Let’s not forget against the odds, that we’ve also built a new stunning training facility, that we built a great rehab gym and fully functional analysis suites, that we’ve rebuilt and renovated two fit for purpose changing room blocks and we’ve created a Premier League style first team dressing room. Through a very demanding decade, we further cemented and grew our BW PASE Academy and award winning sports education programme that now proudly sits as the biggest and best of its kind anywhere in the UK. I’ve also invested in things that people perhaps didn’t think were that important, things like an improved club shop and an improved catering department but I knew they were vital to our progress and, as such, I also invested further in an ever improving community department. In truth it’s been an amazing decade full of self-doubt on my part, but always about club improvement, that will add to our amazing 72 year history. Let me be clear it’s not just what I’ve achieved, but what’s been achieved by so many others in those 72 years. We really do have club legends to look back on, like the incomparable Bill O’Neill, Micky Hunter, Vinnie Cook, Micky Jackson, John Sneddon, Jimmy Howard, Steve Waller, Dave Hatchett, Junior Samuels and, of course, behind the scenes, Peter Smith and Dell Ward. Plus newer legends like Ryan Moran, Mario Noto, Junior Morias, Lee Angol, Bruno Andrade, Mark Ricketts, Ricky Shakes, Ian Allinson and Luke Garrard amongst so many others over the last 72 years. So, as we arrive here today, we must count our blessings and celebrate what has been a decade of success and genuine improvement as we welcome yet another one of the big ex-Football League clubs in league leaders Barrow to Meadow Park.

Our strength, I feel, is that we know exactly who we are......we know exactly what we are, and we know exactly where we’ve come from and hopefully exactly where we’re going.......but because of your patience, our unity and our small steps progress it means we know exactly what we’ve achieved together in the face of much adversity.

So let’s enjoy our well-earned underdog tag as it’s always been about me patiently building our future sensibly behind the scenes. And I still feel that the underdog tag will give us the best opportunity to sustain our success both on and off the park? Perhaps over the next decade, we’ll continue progressing ourselves and still enjoy bloodying the noses of these bigger ex-Football League clubs because in truth it wouldn’t surprise anybody in our league too much, if we pulled off yet another underdog win today and beat the current league leaders. Why? Because we’ve been causing league and cup upsets throughout my 21 seasons in the Chair and throughout the last 72 years of our club’s proud history. Even last year’s National League Champions Leyton Orient can testify to that, as Macclesfield did before them,

and the previous League Champions Lincoln City found out before them. Of course we wholeheartedly respect the current league leaders in Barrow and I genuinely believe we will be witnessing the champions elect today. We know they are full of very talented footballers, we already know they are incredibly hard working and we already know they have done amazing things under their relatively new gaffer Ian Evatt - who has done such an incredible job. But let’s always remember we are the underdog club.....let’s remember we are the club who is often dismissed and often disliked by some of the bigger boys, simply because of our small fan base and because we have the temerity to not only compete with the larger clubs, but because we often finish above them on barely a 650 home crowd average. Anyway, back to today and whoever you support, let’s hope for an open, attacking game and may the best team win.

It’s over to you,

Danny

Barrow come to us in superb form with nine wins from their last twelve fixtures, boasting a points return that have seen them sit top of the pile and have given themselves a great chance of remaining there.

I’m a huge fan of the work Ian has done, watching his team closely in their last three fixtures has shown the amount his side has improved over the period he has been there.

They play a style that is easy on the eye, but I think their biggest improvement this year is they can marry that up with being gritty and have a manner of going back to front with quality and have the forward line to stretch you and cause you problems.

For us today its going to be a challenge, one where we will relish, we are currently in just as good form having not been beaten in our last twelve fixtures also.

Our last meeting away at their place we didn’t have the luxury of using our Skipper Mark Ricketts, our Club Captain Tom Champion and our ever present Kane Smith. Three players that have been really positive in our recent form so can only bode well having these back for selection against the League Leaders.

We are playing some of the best football I have witnessed in my

tenure at the club, the players have really bought into my ideas and have flourished in their performances recently.

We are playing with a confidence and a swagger that is very pleasing. But I’m no fool, we are doing the basics right, working harder than the opposition and when given the opportunity, we are being ruthless.

Today will be no different, if we are to continue our current run and stay on track with our ambition, we need to ensure that Barrow have to get to our levels, and they need to stop us playing. Not let us get into our rhythm.

I would also just like to welcome Adi Yussuf to the squad, we were fortunate enough to bring him in prior to Solihull. He has now had a good full week with us and as long as he listens, applies himself he will be a great addition to this squad.

Let’s hope for a positive performance and result.

Enjoy the game.

Regards,

Luke

Firstly I would like to welcome Ian Evatt, his Players and Staff to Meadow Park

OLLIE BAYLISS PRESENTSTHE NON-LEAGUE SHOW

This week Milton Keynes was awarded the

European City of Sport. Other than the fact it’s

technically a town, it’s hard to disagree that

the title is deserved. MK contributes greatly to

sports like ice hockey, badminton, F1, athletics,

darts and table tennis. However, the town’s

non-league scene is staggeringly lacking.

Aside from Newport Pagnell Town, who’re

based on the North edge of the town, there

are no clubs above the 6th step of non-league.

As a ‘New City’ with a young population, it

means generations of talented lower league

players either travel elsewhere to play football,

or more likely, give up the game for good.

Of course, the town has a good football league

side in MK Dons, but there will always be

those that are reluctant to support the League

One side due to the way the club moved to

the town. A more organic grassroots club,

emerging through the leagues could really

galvanise the passion which exists for the area.

Milton Keynes has a population significantly

larger than towns like Oxford, Wycombe

or Watford. All of those are capable of

supporting several non-league clubs as well as

a professional club, so why not Milton Keynes?

The town has had some notable names in the

past: MK City, Bletchley Town, Milton Keynes

City, Wolverton AFC & Stony Stratford Town

may well ring a bell with non-league fans.

However, all have either folded or dropped

out of the National League system. The usual

combination of a lack of funding and facilities

were the reason for their sad decline.

Yet there is some cause for optimism

for the future. Several grassroots

clubs are trying to fill the void and

rise quickly through the pyramid. MK

Robins is an interesting example. Not

unlike Mk Dons, the club was moved

into the town from elsewhere. In

2012 the historic Buckingham Town

was relocated to Manor Fields in

Milton Keynes. Last January they

were renamed MK Robins to try

and galvanise support and sponsorship

from the local area. The club plays in the

Spartan Division 1 and is now the biggest club

representing the town below the football

league.

There’s a number of MK based clubs playing

a step lower in the Spartan Division 2 too. Old

Bradwell United, New Bradwell St Peter, Unite

MK, and the excellently named MK Gallacticos

are among those from the town. This week on

the Non-League Show I spoke to David Keene

from Old Bradwell United. His side is the

lead contenders to win the division, but their

facilities at Abbey Road aren’t good enough

for them to progress up the ladder. The pitch

is essentially a public park that cuts up badly,

they also lack the floodlights needed to play

Step 6 football.

Therein lays the main ceiling for most clubs

in the town. A lack of facilities, pitches, and

grounds able to support better non-league

football is holding the area back. Hopefully,

the European City of Sport title will bring with

it some much added attention and finances.

With some more investment in the town’s

grassroots game, there’s so much potential for

football to grow. With a quarter of a million

people living in the area, hopefully, more will

get the chance to enjoy non-league football in

the coming years.

PROPOSED NEW DEVELOPMENT ON THE SOUTH END OF MEADOW PARKDespite still being in it’s early stages, the Club is excited to announce to it’s fans and the local Community our proposed new plans for the development at the south end of our Meadow Park home, as we work closely with the local authority Hertsmere Borough Council to put a strategy in place should the Club fulfill it’s dreams of reaching the Football League. This development will include our new ‘Clock End’ which will mirror the North Bank that was built in the summer of 2019, as well as a new purpose built Academy building to house our ever growing sports and education scheme that is the number one of it’s kind in the United Kingdom.
