Welcome to Second Meadow

Good afternoon and welcome to Second Meadow. Today we extend a warm welcome

to the players, officials and supporters of WEMBLEY FC for this Spartan South

Midlands League Premier Division fixture. We also welcome our three match officials

and hope that you all enjoy your short stay with us.

It’s certainly been an eventful week for us. Last Saturday former Chelsea, Barcelona

and Espanyol player Enrique de Lucas (pictured) made his debut in a

Biggleswade United shirt although he was to see us

capitulate in the second half and succumb to two

goals that gave AFC Dunstable the points.

Then on Tuesday night we reached the final

of the North Beds Charity Cup courtesy of a

successful penalty shoot-out that will give us the

chance of some silverware

to celebrate at the club’s End of Season event at

George’s Hall on 7th May.

Our visitors today are currently fifth in the table

and make their first ever visit to our Second

Meadow ground having made the switch to the

Spartan South Midlands League from the

Combined Counties League. Wembley come to

United on the back of a run of five League games

without defeat dropping only two points following a 2-2 draw with Colney Heath. With

games in hand over all but leaders Kings Langley, Wembley must still see themselves

in the hunt for the championship.

In our previous encounter we took all three points with a 3-1 win at Wembley’s Vale

Farm ground. But it needed an excellent all round performance to overcome the

League newcomers and we put in one of our best performances of the season. Jack

Boyd got a hat-trick on the night. Can we do it again??!!

Our Development Side are without a League fixture this afternoon but are playing a

friendly against Hadley Reserves at the Stratton Way ground this afternoon.

Our next fixture is a trip to Harefield United on Saturday followed by another trip to

North London the following Saturday when we go to London Tigers.

Let’s hope for an enjoyable and exciting game this afternoon. Tracey James – Secretary and Programme Editor

CURRENT LEAGUE TABLE THE HISTORY OF BIGGLESWADE UNITED (2)

The next eleven years saw the first team led by Steve "Snowy" Wright and under his management the club continued to enjoy a very high level of League and Cup success ultimately achieving promotion to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and with it the opportunity to compete in the FA Cup. And under Snowy the club made three Beds FA Senior Challenge Cup final appearances, winning two of the three with victories over Stotfold (4-1) and Leighton Town (1-0) but missed out in 2006/07 going down 2-0 to Dunstable Town. Snowy's other cup successes came in the form of the Hunts Premeir Cup, North Beds Charity Cup, Hinchingbrooke Cup, the SML Division One Cup and the SML Special Achievement Award once again. The end of the 2006 2007 season saw Snowy step down as manager with his assistant, Nick Burton taking over the first team reins. The 2006 2007 season marked a crucial time in the club's history with the formation of a youth structure that sees Biggleswade girls and boys aged 7 to 18 able to be part of Biggleswade United. We now have twelve youth teams including three girls teams with a well established youth committee. The profile of the club as a community club is very much boosted by the association with such a well organised and well structured youth set up. January 5th 2009 saw the club embark on further ambitious ground improvements. With financial backing from Biggleswade Town Council, Mid Beds District Council and the Football Foundation we installed a 260-seater stand, fully enclosed the ground with a double turnstile entrance and players' secure walkway which raised the ground to Grade E status. After several years of stability in terms of first team managers the next six years saw a regular turnover of first team and reserve team managers with Nick Burton, Dave Elkin and Phil Childs all taking over the first team reins for a time. At the start of the 2013 2014 season we appointed Mick Reardon and Mark Royal as first team managers both of whom have enjoyed success as coaches at the higher levels of football. Their disciplined approach was quickly adhered to and responded to by the players. The new 2014 – 2015 season has seen the arrival of several new young players to the club following the club’s positive decision to introduce a side that will compete in the Suburban League as well as continuing to compete in the SML Premier Division. The Suburban side will be managed by Gary Burkett who enjoyed success with Shefford Saints Under 18s and many talented young players will be part of the United Squad. Gary will be assisted by former Bushey Met Police manager, Tony Jones. In November 2014 the club took a further positive step to realise our ambitions with the appointment of Sky Sports Presenter and renowned author, Guillem Balague as Biggleswade United’s Director of Football. The club has certainly come a long way in relatively few years but we could not have done it without the help of a very supportive Town and District Council who clearly understand the benefits of having a community based club in Biggleswade. Our success is also very much down to a very hard working committee who throughout the year - not just the football season - continue to volunteer their time and commitment to the club, to help it continue to thrive and be a source of enjoyment for our supporters and the Biggleswade community.

BIGGLESWADE UNITED : OUR HISTORY SO FAR

Biggleswade United Football Club was re- formed on the 16th July 1959. However, local history records indicate that there was a Biggleswade United side playing at Second Meadow as early as 1929. Our first season (1959/60) saw us competing in Division Three of the North Herts. League (NHL). After 10 successful years in the NHL the club made the step up to South Midlands League (SML) football. But towards the end of a 15-year association with the SML the club began to struggle and after three years of finishing in the bottom three of Division One we sought fresh fields. The club joined the Herts. Senior but club continued to find the going tough. In 1986 we elected to return to local League football, joining the Bedford and District Football League and began to build again. The appointment of Brian Swords as first team manager in 87/88 proved to be the turning point in the club's fortunes. During the next ten years the club achieved a tremendous amount of success on and off the football pitch. Our record of League and Cup honours speak for themselves but aligned to this a great deal of work went on behind the scenes to match the on-field success. The club now boasts one of the best clubhouse and ground facilities in the Mid-Bedfordshire area. The success of the club has also attracted many new players as well as commanding a great deal of loyalty from those players who helped the club progress from Division Three of the Bedford and District League to County Senior Club status in just 15 years. The 1995/96 season was the most successful in the club's history - winning five major honours; the Beds Intermediate County Cup, Bedford and District League Championship, League Cup Championship and as the League's representatives the club won the Beds. FA Centenary Cup. Having won every major Bedford League honour the club felt it was time to move on and made the decision to make the step up once again and returned to Division One of the SML. In an exceptionally successful first season we celebrated a Division One "double" by winning the Championship and the Division One Cup. We also retained the Beds. FA Intermediate County Cup, only the second club in the competition's history to achieve this feat. To crown our success the club were awarded the SML Special Achievement Trophy in July 1997. In the season 1997/98 we finally achieved Senior status. This was achieved not only through the endeavours of the players on the field but ultimately as a result of an extremely hard working committee. With the help of the Biggleswade Town Council a new stand was erected and perimeter fencing installed. And two seasons later the club erected floodlights and on the evening of 26th October 1999 we played our first-ever floodlit game at Second Meadow, Ryman League side Leighton Town were the visitors in the Bedfordshire Premier Cup.

United through to final in penalty shoot out WEMBLEY – THE HISTORY BEHIND THE CLUB

AFC KEMPSTON ROVERS 3 BIGGLESWADE UNITED 3 (4 – 5 Penalties)

Biggleswade United are through to the final of the North Beds Charity Cup after an enthralling semi- final that saw their opponents, AFC Kempston Rovers, stage a dramatic final ten minute comeback to send the game in to the notorious penalty shoot- out. It’s been 11 years since United last lifted the cup and they will have to await the outcome of a further two matches to discover who they will meet in the final that to be staged at Kempston’s Hillgrounds on Friday May 1st. Tuesday night’s game had the spectators enraptured from the first minute with both sides playing contrasting styles of attacking football. United’s play was pacey and intricate whereas Rovers went for the long ball from deep and you couldn’t blame them with former SML leading goalscorer, Vinny Shrieves, their target man. But it was United’s style that won out in the first half with two excellently worked goals. The first was the result of tenacious work from Nyasha Sagwete and Tom Cookman who tied the Rovers’ defenders in knots as they worked the ball around the Rovers’ penalty area. With the hosts at full stretch Cookman slipped the ball across to Adam Drakulic who sent a “pearler” into the far corner of Martin Conway’s net for 1-0 with 22 minutes on the clock. Rovers’ responded immediately but poor finishing, a string of fine saves from Grant Beckwith and a goal line clearance from United’s Jake O’Neill prevented them from drawing level. On the stroke of half time United made it 2-0 with another and it was one for the history books with Chinua Cole (pictured) scoring his first senior goal at the age of 21. Another move through the middle of the park saw the ball swing left to right finishing with Drakulic who crossed to the unmarked Cole in the six yard area and he headed home to give United a two goal cushion. But United failed to repeat the style of play that had reaped them the dividends of two goals and for much of the second half the hosts dictated the play. And it came as no surprise when they reduced the arrears in the 65th minute when United failed to clear a free kick and Rovers’ Ash Fuller tucked away the loose ball. United’s forays in to the Rovers penalty area were limited but in the 71st minute United’s man of the match, Sagwete, attempted to run his marker but was brought tumbling as he tried to play in Sam Nair. With no advantage gained referee, Mark Ives, pointed to the spot from where Nair made it 3-1 to United. That should have sealed the tie for United but Rover’s sent all men forward and got the rewards as panic set into the United ranks. With just six minutes remaining on the clock Rovers pulled it back – again sloppy marking gifted the hosts another goal. And two minutes later they were level. A long ball caught United square and despite defender Ollie Peters chasing down Rovers’ Ekene Armadi the big striker managed to stand his ground and slipped the ball under the advancing Beckwith. In the final minute United thought they had grabbed the winner when an overhead kick from Cookman hit the upright followed by a goal line clearance from a James Lamptey strike. The penalty shoot-out saw United score all of their penalties leaving Rovers’ final penalty taker, keeper Conway, to take it in to sudden death. But Beckwith turned hero of the night diving low to get a finger to Conway’s strike and send United in to the final.

THE EARLY YEARS WEMBLEY FOOTBALL CLUB was formed in 1946 following an amalgamation of various junior clubs, predominantly Sudbury Ratepayers Association and Sudbury Rangers. Nicknamed the 'Lions', (the symbol of the British Empire Exhibition held at Wembley in 1924/25, the emblem was also used by the local speedway and ice-hockey teams), they found a home at Vale Farm and have remained there ever since, developing a roped-off pitch into a respectable non-League football ground. Entry was immediately made into the Middlesex League. After finishing a creditable fourth in their first season they went on to win the championship in 1947/48. A further season was spent in this league before the Club progressed into the Spartan League in 1949/50. Here they stayed for two years, clinching the Western Division title in 1950/51 as a result of which they became founder members of the Delphian League. In season 1955/56 they reached the finals of both the London Senior Cup and Middlesex Senior Cup and also finished runners-up in the Delphian League. In recognition of these achievements they were invited to join the Corinthian League and subsequently vastly improved the facilities at Vale Farm. THE PRESENT Following a quiet period the Club moved into the Athenian League (1963/64) which had absorbed both the Corinthian and Delphian Leagues to create three divisions. Wembley were placed in the middle section. Malcolm Allison (1962-1963) and Allen Batsford (1964 -1965) were both employed as coaches by the Lions during this period, although their respective spells were brief. Both gentlemen went on to have distinguished careers elsewhere and who knows where the Club might be today had either one of them remained at Vale Farm. Wembley did manage to gain promotion to the Premier Division in 1967/68. To anticipate further progress floodlights were installed, a new clubhouse and dressing-room complex were built and eventually admission to the expanding Isthmian League was granted in 1975. Finishing runners-up in their final season justified Wembley's elevation. Wembley began their first season in the Isthmian League (1975/76) in the second division (now the first division). The closest they came to promotion to the Premier Division was in 1985/86. After completing their fixtures, Wembley headed the table only to miss out on going up by two points when both St.Albans City and Bromley won their respective games in hand. Only two teams went up in those days. Despite failing to achieve promotion, Wembley obtained some minor compensation by recording various cup successes during this period. In 1980/81 they reached the First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup for the one and only time, losing 0-3 to Enfield at Southbury Road. Wembley were forced to leave the Isthmian League set-up at the end of the 2005/06 season following the disbanding of the second division. They joined the Combined Counties League. A sterling effort was made to win promotion during their first season (2006/07)), but ran out of steam to end the term in the third place. Apart from that, they failed to make a real impact, although they did reach the final of the Combined Counties League Cup in 2010/11, but lost to Sandhurst Town, 0-1, at Farnborough. However, after their participation in the following season's F.A. Cup, (their Extra-Preliminary Round tie with Ascot United was covered live on Facebook) the competition sponsors, Budweiser, offered the Lions a much-publicised deal which they could not refuse. This included the signing of several retired professionals to help the Lions progress as far as possible in the 2012/13 F.A. Cup under the guidance of Terry Venables. Unfortunately, Wembley only played three games in the competition before bowing out. After eight seasons, Wembley's membership of the Combined Counties League was ended by a lateral move across Step Five of the non-League pyramid, and they will begin 2014/15 in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division.

AFC DUNSTABLE 2 BIGGLESWADE UNITED 0 (Match report by Tom Bell – Green)

This game promised so much for United, it is not every day you have a former Spanish U21 international and Premier league star your starting line-up. But the game flattered to deceive, as AFC Dunstable extended their 18 game unbeaten run at Creasy Park on Saturday Afternoon. Biggleswade were without three of their key players, with top goal scorer Boyd, midfield general Bilcock and the hard working Cookman all unavailable for Mick Reardon side. This was not the dream debut for Quique De Lucas could have hoped for, but it was an experience to say the least. The game started brightly for United, with De Lucas, as expected, pulling the strings in the middle of the park, spraying passes left and right. Jude Eboji was also causing Dunstable all sorts of problems, with his pace and power offering a real threat for United. It was these two that carved out arguably Biggleswade’s best chance of the game just 10 minutes in. De Lucas’ burst forward and inch perfect pass found Eboji on the left hand side of the area, but he could only send his shot narrowly wide of the far post. In a game of very few chances, this was certainly one United had to take if they were to get anything from the game. The rest of the first half was a bit of a non-event, with neither side really dominating possession or creating any chances. But that all changed at half time, as within 1 minute of the restart, Biggleswade found themselves 1-0 down. A mistake by Darvall in midfield saw him give the ball straight to Dunstable’s centre midfielder, he then played in Jamie Warne, who let fly from 20 yards and found the top corner with a superb strike. This was a real hammer blow for United, who seemed to have left themselves in the changing rooms at the start of the second half. Dunstable really started to turn the screw after the goal, with Biggleswade unable to get a hold of the ball and struggled to get the main man, De Lucas, involved in any play. Mid way through the second half Dunstable doubled their lead. Just as the heavens opened and a freak hail storm began, a deep corner from the right hand side found AFC’s Grant Fryer at the back post to nod in past Beckwith. That pretty much sealed the game for Dunstable and despite a late flurry of corners put in by De Lucas, Biggleswade couldn’t conjure up a goal. The best chance fell to Chinua Cole, whose volley was well saved by the home sides ‘keeper.
