On Saturday, March 14th, the St. Gabriel YouthGroup sponsored their annual blood drive for the Ca-naryville community. The teens worked in conjunction with the HeartlandBlood Center, which meets the needs of patients in 38hospitals in the Greater Chicago land area. The YouthGroup chose the Blood Drive as a special Lenten proj-ect. A big Thank You goes out to all the youth whohelped out in any way, as well as the many people whogave the “Gift of Life”.

If someone in grades 8-12 is interested in joining ourYouth Group, which focuses on doing Christian serv-ice projects for the needy, please contact Fr. RichCreagh, the moderator, at 773-268-9595.

Blessed Sacrament ParishTeen Program

Recently The Blessed Sacrament Parish Teen Pro-gram, located at 3530 S. Hermitage in McKinley Parktook some of its teens on a spiritually rewarding Reach-Out Retreat.

Father Rocco Puopolo on left and Father Godfreyfrom Uganda on Right.

The retreat was held in Dixon, IL and Blessed Sacramentalong with Christ the King Parish in Beverly and othergroups from Western Illinois and Iowa took part. Reach-Out Retreats have taken place each year for over threedecades thanks to the dedicated youth workers of these longstanding organizations and their supporters. The retreat wasguided also in part by three Priests: Father RoccoPuopolofrom Xaverian Missionaries in Massachusetts, Father God-frey from Uganda, Africa, and Father Larry of Christ ofKing Parish in Beverly, Chicago.

The retreat consisted of two Masses, The sacrament ofReconciliation, witness talks, small and large group activ-ities with discussion, prayer services, skits, great food andgames. The theme of the Retreat was “One Heart, OneLove” and the activities were centered on this idea. An ex-ample of one activity had the teams embark on a scavengerhunt to find their piece of the one giant Styrofoam heartthat would eventually be decorated and united with the oth-ers. The weekend was a great opportunity for everyone in-volved to reflect, interact with new people, have fun, express their creativity, talk, pray, and strengthen their faith.Plans are already in the work for the next one!

The Blessed Sacrament Teen Center has been open fortwenty-seven years offering the youth a place to come afterschool for games, homework help, exercise, communityservice, field trips, retreats, and fun.The Teen Center is openfour days a week Tuesday, 3:00-6:30PM, Wednesday,Thursday, Friday from 3 P.M. until 6:30-7 P.M. Some Sun-days from 7PM till 9:30P.M, check with the teen center forschedule. ACT preparations on Wednesday at 5:30 P.M.

St. Barbara School NewsOur Readers Are Leaders!

As part of a collaborative learning experience, 2ndgrade and 8th Grade at St. Barbara School have teamedup to become better readers. Each 2nd grader has an 8thgrade buddy who visits our classroom every Wednes-day afternoon. Activities that they work on together in-clude reading out loud to partners, reading games onour Promethean board, and flashcard practice.

Eighth grader Adrian Gonzalez reads with his read-ing buddy second graders, Juan Kwiatkowski Perez.

Our 8th grade friends are very helpful and motivating-they are encouraging all to be phenomenal readers!

Note to editor: Last week’s article about the St. Bar-bara Bulldogs was inaccurate due to the enthusiasm ofone of the teachers. St. Barbara bulldogs did not comein second place as last week's article stated. The teammade the playoff but did not advance. Congratulationsto the team that did come in second place!

Patrick D. ThompsonWorking With Community,Park District to ImproveTaylor Lauridsen Park

Patrick D. Thompson joined Park District offi-cials, The Taylor Lauridsen Park Advisory Counciland community residents to discuss the proposedimprovements to the Park. Thompson, Commiss-ioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation Dis-trict and candidate for Alderman of the 11th Ward, has been an advocate for improving the field to elim-inate flooding, to provide new field bleachers, score-board renovation and other improvements requestedby the community. The project will bring $200,000in improvements to the field.

“It’s about listening to the concerns of the com-munity, working with the Taylor Lauridsen ParkAdvisory Council and other community residents, that enabled us to approach the Park District with acomprehensive plan to improve the park,” Thomp-son stated.

The hearing was an opportunity for the park dis-trict to show the improvement and renderings to theresidents and gain feedback before moving forward. One of the concerns voiced was to make the bleach-ers moveable to increase accessibility to the field fordifferent activities. Additional concerns about thelandscaping were brought forward by the AdvisoryCouncil. Patrick D. Thompson asked the park dis-trict to continue the conversation to address theseconcerns.

“A key to getting these park improvements washaving concerned officials, who have been activeand are willing to come out and listen to the needs ofthe community,” said Janet McCormack of the Tay-lor Lauridsen Park Advisory Council.

The Park District announced the proposed im-provements late last fall. The field upgrades will notonly eliminate flooding but will open the doors tothe Park hosting softball tournaments and otheractivities for the community.

“This will be a great thing for the neighborhoodand is the kind of community partnership I intend tobring to the 11th Ward as alderman,” Patrick D.Thompson said.
