  Bible Study

On September 22, we started the Fast Track Disciple Bible Study

Classes will meet on Monday nights from

7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

There will be 12 weekly classes on the Old Testament in the fall &

12 weekly classes on the New Testament in the spring.

Selah Dancers

Selah is a Biblical name from the book of Psalms meaning to uplift or draw near. Our own Joe Allen (Martha’s son) performs with this dance troupe. The Selah dancers have been performing for over 25 years and offer a special message through spiritual dance. They will perform at the 8:30 and also at the 11:00 am worship services on October 19th. Be in prayer for them and come receive a blessing yourself!

Best Years Group On October 15th, the Best Years Group will travel to the Asheville Farmers Market. We will leave the church at 7:00 am, stop for breakfast and return home the same day. Call Carolyn Starnes if you plan to go with them at 704-843-2843.

Being a Methodist! We, as Methodists, have a unique way of understanding and living out our faith that defines us. It is, I believe, and hope you do too, something that the world needs. We are defined by our love for God and our love for others. Our understanding of our faith is what we call a theology of grace. Our religion is a religion of the heart. Salvation is personal and social, meaning that our salvation changes us inside and out. As Methodists, we are open and we welcome everyone who wants to worship Christ, that is, we are not gatekeepers and decide who is worthy and who is not. We understand the authority of scripture and the importance of tradition, reason and experience. We are defined by holiness and what it means to strive for perfection in love. We also have a church polity that guides how the local church operates in the wider connection with other United Methodist Churches. Laity and clergy are partners, but with different roles. We value the importance of the church to make differences in social justice issues. We cannot be quiet when faced with wrongs. Methodism has impacted millions of people across the world. And there is the way that pastors are appointed to serve churches by the Bishop, known as the itinerancy of clergy in the United Methodist Church. As it was announced on September 28th, I will be moving to First UMC, Asheboro in the next month and my last Sunday will be October 26th. Bethlehem will receive a new appointment of another pastor in our conference. We do not yet know who the new pastor will be but I know that they will be blessed to be the pastor of Bethlehem!

John Wesley wrote, "We have found by long and consistent experience that a frequent exchange of preachers is best. This preacher has one talent, that another; no one whom I ever yet knew has all the talents which are needful for beginning, continuing, and perfecting the work of grace in a whole congregation." This is just one reason that we have this system of itinerancy. The main thing I hope you understand is that this move is part of being faithful to my call to ministry and my vows as an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. I do sense God’s call in this change. I will not tell you that it is easy. (CONT…)

I will say, though, that I have no doubt that God is very pleased with Bethlehem and the faithfulness of this church for 172 years.

During this transition time, we will talk more about itinerancy and we will say goodbye. In the meantime, I also encourage you to talk to Roger Hill, SPRC chair and other members of the SPRC. I am grateful for you. This is a great church with a lot of loving people who love God and love each other. I have been so blessed to be part of you.

Love,

Pastor Lynda

Backpack Program

School has started back and so has our backpack ministry. This goes to children in our community schools who have been identified as needing meals over the weekend. Remember we place mac & cheese, beanie weenies, ramen noodles, vienna sausage, spaghettio’s, applesauce, granola bars, oatmeal, grits, pop tarts, crackers and juice boxes in these backpacks. This year we will also begin providing health kits 4 times per year. These kits will be sent home with the backpack program. Please donate the following items and place them in the container near the backpack items in the fellowship hall and the educational building. Items needed include bar soap, washcloths, hairbrushes, kids shampoo/conditioner (2 in 1), toothbrushes and kid’s toothpaste. If you have any questions see Kim Helms. Thank you for your support of this outreach ministry!
