OUR CHALLENGEToo many women, and men, die of breast cancer due to late detection. Currently over 2000 cases are diagnosed at stage 4 each year – there is no stage 5. This is unnecessary. We strongly believe all young people should be taught about cancer and how to lead healthy lives from a young age.

It kills 12,000 people per year

It’s the most common cancer in women under 39

It’s the most common cancer in the UK

Nearly 55,000 people diagnosed annually

400 men are diagnosed every year

Stats taken from Cancer Research UK and Breast Cancer Care.

OUR STORY

CoppaFeel! is about more than discovering a cancer diagnosis. It’s about empowering ourselves to be proactive about our own health and body, as well as our outlook on life. It’s about knowing your boobs; knowing that if you do find something, you know what to do and if found early, you have many options. Put simply, breast cancer does not need to be detected late, and as long as we are here and continue to be supported by people like you, we will do all we can to

CoppaFeel! was founded in 2009 by Kristin Hallenga, following her diagnosis of secondary breast cancer at the age of 23. She made it her mission to ensure other young people don’t find themselves in a similar situation; where they’re told the cancer cannot be cured because it was found late.

KRIS’ STORYOn discovering a lump in her breast in June 2008, Kris went to visit the GP to get it checked out. She was sent away on the basis that, at her young age, it was bound to be hormonal. Eight months on and following a frustrating fight, Kris discovered not only that she had breast cancer, but she had incurable cancer. She realised that there was very little information targeting young people about the risk of breast cancer and that if she had been better informed, her situation could have been very different.

make sure this doesn’t continue to happen. We are passionately committed to affecting real change. You’ll find us at festivals, at unis, at school, your workplace, your shower and even your bra. We’re like a friendly bop on the head when you least expect it and we’re here to make sure that your boobs are top priority, throughout your life.

After looking at existing breast cancer charities, there was clearly a big gap in the market for a new younger, brash and bold alternative that would resonate with a younger age group and so in Spring 2009, CoppaFeel! was born.

There are many reasons why people don’t check their boobs. This includes forgetting and not knowing ‘how’ to actually check. The most common one is that most young people don’t believe they are at immediate risk of the disease and don’t think it’s something they need to think about until they’re in their 60s. So, we’re making it as simple as we can; making sure there are no more excuses and that everyone knows exactly what they’re looking for and remembers to do it regularly. We want to make young people realise that there’s nothing embarrassing or weird about checking their boobs and that the sooner they start, the more comfortable they will be knowing what is normal for them. We want to start a habit and in turn we will save lives. The most common signs and symptoms related to breast cancer are shown here. It’s important that people get to know what is normal for them and

OUR MESSAGECoppaFeel! is run by young people, for young people. Everything we do is targeted at those people that need to hear our message the most. We have worked hard to establish ways to reach out to young people by removing the scare factor and talking about boobs in an open and honest way.

include checking their armpit and collarbone when they’re doing their regular checks. There is no right or wrong way to check - it’s just about having a good look and a feel and doing it regularly.Find more info about boob checking on our website here.

WHAT DOES A VOLUNTEER DO?Without volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to reach as many of the thousands of the young people that we speak to. FAQsHow should I advise someone to check their boobs?

There is no right or wrong way to check. Make sure you know the signs and include your armpit and collarbone area and do it regularly. The shower is a great place to do it and make it part of your routine.

What do I do if someone tells me they’ve noticed a sign or symptom and would like me to check?

Make it clear you can’t as you are no medical expert but if they’re concerned they should speak to their doctor. If they usually have lumpy boobs, this might be normal for them. Tell them to keep an eye on it and if they’re worried, they should make an appointment to see their GP.

What kind of research does CoppaFeel! do?

We don’t do research, we’re an education charity, which means we spend our money on projects that ensure young people have the tools they need to detect cancer at its earliest stage.

How can people sign up to CoppaFeel!’s text reminder service?

All they have to do is text “BOOBS” to 70300 and they will then receive free monthly reminders to check their boobs. For all the T&Cs head to our website here.

How do I claim my travel expenses back from CoppaFeel!?Before signing up to help at an event, make sure that travel expenses are covered by CoppaFeel! as this isn’t always the case. In most cases, we do cover your travel so make sure you ask for a form from the team and keep all receipts. We try to reimburse expenses as promptly as possible.

What should I wear?

A CoppaFeel! t-shirt will be provided. If the event is outside we also have coats, rain macs and high vis vests. Make sure you tell the team what size you require.
