Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter animal crackers The Newsletter of Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter Spring 2010 www.njshelter.org Focus on our Felines Cat and kitten season typically occurs in the spring and summer months. During that time a majority of cats give birth to countless unwanted litters throughout the country. The 2009 cat and kitten season caused shelters across the state of New Jersey to scratch their heads – kitten season never ended. This, combined with the downturn in the economy which caused so many owners to relinquish their pets into the shelter system, hit Mt. Pleasant hard. For the first time in our shelter history we had an overwhelming number of cats AND kittens throughout the winter. We are now gearing up for another season that we feel may be worse than 2009. It is vital that we work as a community to reduce the number of unwanted animals through spay and neuter. On February 23, 2010 Mt. Pleasant teamed up with Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association, Inc. and Parsippany Animal Supporters Society (PASS) for this year’s Spay Day USA, an annual campaign sponsored by The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International. We provided several needy families in our community with low-cost spay and neuter for their pets. In addition, we have plans for further low-cost spay and neuter days in the late spring and summer. Mt. Pleasant is currently home to about 70 cats. Many come from other shelters that would euthanize them due to lack of space. Others arrive as owner surrenders because of a family moving, allergies, economic hardship, etc. We receive cats in need of rescue each week. All of our cats receive a wellness exam by a veterinarian, are current on vaccines, spayed or neutered and microchipped. The cats’ temperaments have also been evaluated by our staff so we can match them to the best possible home. We want to be sure that “adopter” and “adoptee” are a good fit on all points. Some of our felines have been with us for over two years, and they can live at Mt. Pleasant until they find their forever home. Here they receive much love and socialization each day from the staff as well as the many volunteers who dedicate their time. Every cat has a story and although we would love to give all 70 of them, here are just a few: GERALDINE Geraldine, a gorgeous black domestic shorthair, was a happy resident for the past 2 1/2 years. She lived in cattery #1 with 15 other cats, 8 in cages and the others, like her, free roaming. At times the number of cats went up, at times it went down, but Geraldine was always the “Queen Mother”. She had been brought to us with her kittens in May 2007. All the kittens were adopted, but as often happens, Mama was left behind. In January 2010, Geraldine finally found her forever home with a wonderful woman who wanted a “black lap cat” after losing her own “black lap cat” after 22 years. They bonded at once - and the match was made. She is now living the life of the queen she really is - the only cat in a quiet home, a lap on which to nap as she pleases and a loving woman to own as only she can and will. Even though Geraldine had been residing at Mt. Pleasant for a number of years there was a family for her - it just took time to find the perfect fit. Our animals are truly our family until they become yours! MIECE This long haired grey feline is a very handsome fellow. He nuzzles and rubs up against you as you pet him, loves to be brushed and is a gentle soul. As an added bonus, he gets along famously with dogs. Miece came to us with an upper respiratory infection and after multiple treatments the symptoms recurred. The vet recommended an MRI to determine the cause of the infections and rule out a more serious underlying problem. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we were able to raise enough money to pay for the procedure. The MRI showed that his nasal cavities did not develop as they should have when he was a kitten. His prognosis is excellent – Miece may have an occasional sniffle, but is not contagious and should live a long and normal life. He is currently seeking his forever home, and would make a great addition to yours! BUTTERSCOTCH She may be only 3 1/2 pounds but don’t let that fool you! She is a little dynamo - wriggling every which way in your arms. Her “purrsonality” is infectious, climbing right into your heart from the moment you meet her. Butterscotch was born with Eyelid Agenesis which means that her eyelashes grew into her eyes instead of up and away like normal kittens. The condition would have caused blindness if left untreated. She has had one surgery at the Animal Eye Center of NJ, and will need a second one, but our veterinarians feel confident that she should make a full recovery and have normal vision. We at Mt. Pleasant would like to say thank you to all who contributed to offset this sweet kitten’s medical expenses. Butterscotch says MEOW and offers kitten kisses to all!

Focus on our FelinesCat and kitten season typically occurs in the spring and summer months. During that time a majority of cats give birth to countless unwanted litters throughout the country. The 2009 cat and kitten season caused shelters across the state of New Jersey to scratch their heads – kitten season never ended. Special Thanks

Mt. Pleasant would like to send a special thanks to:

Dr. Howard A. Miller and his wonderful staff at Eagle Rock Veterinary Hospital in West Orange for their care of Lulu. She suffered a broken leg years ago when her leg was caught in the small wire cage at the Puppy Mill she called home for over 6 years. In addition she needed dental care with multiple extractions due to her years of neglect. Dr. Miller performed two long surgeries on Lulu. The first a five hour dental and the second the amputation of her broken leg and her spay surgery. Dr. Miller and his staff spoiled her at the hospital (as they do all their patients). Lulu has since been adopted by her foster mom, who said “Lulu is finally pain-free and beginning to learn how great life can be.”

Larry Treat and Pat Olivetto, both of East Hanover, for their work as volunteer “Mr. Fix-Its” at the shelter. Larry and Pat donate their time and talents to updating, correcting and building projects. Most recently Larry was able to replace our faucet, repair several issues on our cages and kennels, and give our upstairs bathroom a much needed “makeover”. Pat built amazing shelving units which now allow us to stock more of our supplies in an orderly fashion. All of these projects were vital to our efforts of keeping our animal safe and well loved at Mt. Pleasant.

Volunteer of note: DAnA HAAseDid you know you can make a difference in the lives of homeless animals without ever leaving the house? Well, volunteer Dana Haase has proven just that. She wanted to do more, but because of work, she couldn’t always make it to the Shelter. So Dana offered to take over Mt. Pleasant’s Facebook page. In less than a year, Dana has transformed our once dormant page into a fabulous resource for all of Mt. Pleasant’s fans. She updates everyone on adoptable animals, events, special needs and other important pet-related news. Thanks to Dana’s hard work we now have a great way to keep our supporters up-to-date with Mt. Pleasant news and events. Check out the great job Dana has done and become Mt. Pleasant (and Dana’s) next “fan” by visiting our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Mt.PleasantAnimalShelter.

Jr. Volunteer of note: MicHelle MArDisWhen Michelle Mardis started volunteering at Mt. Pleasant it was obvious she was a passionate young woman dedicated to doing something to help homeless animals. She decided to direct her energy to raise donations, money, supplies and awareness for the animals at Mt. Pleasant. Getting her friends involved, Michelle held numerous fundraisers such as a lemonade stand and supply drives like the one she hosted at a local Walmart in July. All this hard work has paid off for our homeless animals, bringing in hundreds of dollars in donations and supplies for the animals.

We are grateful for all of our volunteers here at Mt. Pleasant, but a special thank you goes to two volunteers of note, Dana Haase and Michelle Mardis.

Junior Volunteer Julia Friend (Short Hills) got her whole school involved in fundraising for the homeless animals at Mt. Pleasant. Julia

encouraged students at the Pingry Middle School in Martinsville to donate on “Jeans Day” to support

the shelter. Julia raised $358.30 for the cats and dogs at Mt. Pleasant! Executive Director Nicole Lewy Drummond and Wicker were there to greet students as they came in to school that morning.

Thanks for all your hard work, Julia!

To Our Fellow Animal Lovers:I can already feel the energy spring air brings to everyone! I know my dogs at home are sitting (not so patiently) waiting for their evening walk. Each spring I talk about how the thought of “springtime” has many meanings in the animal welfare community. The staff and volunteers at Mt. Pleasant are eager for warmer weather to play with the dogs in the yards (without the need for scarves and hats and WARM gloves) and begin to take some to the park for a fun day out. The cats are basking in the sun as the days become longer, and they stake out the sunniest spots in cattery #1.

This year we are also focusing on a spring cleaning for the shelter, and it has never looked better! New shelving has been installed and we finally have a place to neatly store all of the generous in-kind donations that we receive. We truly could not have done this project without our volunteers – thank you for giving us so much more space.

We are always looking to make improvements to the shelter and always open to ideas from our supporters and volunteers. Our staff said “we wish we had more storage” and our volunteers said “tell us what you are looking for and we can design it.” What a great partnership! This is a perfect example of how wonderfully our staff and volunteers work together. I could not be more proud to be leading such an amazing organization.

2010 is off to a great start. I am excited to be planning new events to help raise the funds needed for our homeless cats and dogs. Please check out our website at www.njshelter.org for updates and postings.

I wish you a wonderful spring. I hope to see many of you at the shelter soon!

Letter From the PresidentDear Friends of Mt. Pleasant,

Please take the time to read the article entitled “Do You Need a Will?” We should all decide for ourselves what will happen to our savings and our homes when we’ve gone. Don’t let the government decide for you!

I, for one, have named Mt. Pleasant as a beneficiary in my will. It’s a very simple and inexpensive thing to do, and it brings great peace of mind to know that my money will keep this great shelter caring for homeless animals long after I have departed this earth.

I invite you to join me in the “President’s Circle” by putting Mt. Pleasant in your will. Just let us know that you have done so by contacting our Executive Director, Nicole Drummond, at (973) 386-0068 or emailing her at [email protected] . As a member of the President’s Circle you will receive free membership in the Shelter and special discounts to all our events.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and consider naming Mt. Pleasant as a beneficiary in your will!

Sincerely,

Jane J. Dickson  President, Board of Directors

Chip & Dale (Formerly Big Foot and Perry)

I adopted 2 cats on February 25th, 2009 - Big Foot & Perry. I just wanted to tell you how much I love these cats. They are so much fun. They sleep together and play together. They both were about a year old when I got them from you and our vet said they are in perfect health. We named them Chip (Big Foot) and Dale (Perry). I am attaching a picture of them so you can see how much they love one another. Chip is the black & gray tiger strip and Dale is the orange one….

Thanks for everything. I am recommending your shelter to everyone. Everyone there was so nice and the facility was quite clean. Mary M. Rafferty

Pee Wee

PeeWee is doing Great! PeeWee has adjusted completely. He loves to hang out with his new daddy.

He is a big mush and is taking well to our house and family. Thanks for taking care of him in between. :-)

Lori & Keith

Willis (Formerly Ichabod)

Just sending an update on Ichabod, but now known as Willis. Thank you for all the care that you guys had provided for him, he is very happy and healthy, also very active and sometimes crazy. We love Willis very much, Thank you all. Isabel, Yasmin and Willis

Despite some inevitable bad weather, our 2009 Holiday Fair was a big success in terms of money raised for our homeless cats and dogs.

Several customers commented that the things we sell seem to get nicer every year. In addition to countless individual donors, we have been lucky to be supported by Amiee Lynn Accessories of New York City and Greets and Treats, a Hallmark cards and gifts store on the Livingston Circle, both of whom donate large amounts of new merchandise for this event.

This year we were unable to have one of our wonderful birdhouses to auction, because our master carpenter was busy on a home renovation of his own. To

those who asked – yes, he’s promised to build a new and spectacular one for Holiday Fair 2010!

The success of this event wouldn’t be possible without the help of the great MPAS staff and many wonderful and dedicated volunteers. Many thanks to all!

If anyone reading this has any new items to donate for our 2010 Fair, please bring them to MPAS and include your name and address with your donation if you’d like an itemized letter for tax purposes. There’s no need to wait until closer to the event; I collect and store items all year. Please ask your friends and relatives if they can help, too. We sell almost everything except large or bulky things (space is limited); if you have any questions, just call the Shelter at 973-386-0590 and ask for me.

The more merchandise, the more money we can earn to support our residents. It’s such an easy way to help the animals – and that’s why we’re here in the first place! Thank you in advance.

Do You Need a Will?

Zach

I have been meaning to send you these pictures. Zach has settled into his new home with ease. He is smart, calm, friendly and happy (now!) We walk 3 times each day even in this frigid weather.

He is so well behaved on his walks and he loves meeting all the local canines. Even the timid or aggressive dogs seem to like Zach. I am home a lot, so he has plenty of company. His favorite treat is the bone that I give him after one of our walks. He is such a good boy and we are so happy to have him. I can not believe that someone gave him up. Thank you again for making this all possible. Oh, one more thing. Zach smiles a lot. He has this goofy expression on his face and his tail is wagging a mile a minute.

Best wishes for an adoption-full 2010. Susan Finn

Holly

I recently adopted Holly from your shelter and just wanted you all to know that she has adjusted nicely...She is very loving and content. I’m happy tobe able to give her a home. She already has several of her own ‘favorite’ spots here at home, including a couple of window seats (secured screens and storm windows intact). It’s been so much fun watching her explore, play, and make herself at home. I look forward to years of caring for her and in return having her companionship. She is a real ‘Sweetie’, which has becomeher nickname. I have attached a photo which was taken just a couple of days after she entered her new home.

Cordially,Vanessa A. Patterson

Quinn

Elson and I would like to thank you for letting us adopt Quinn. I know it has been almost a year since we adopted her from your wonderful animal shelter but we would like to just update you. Quinn has been doing great, she has learned how to do a couple of things on command like, sit, stay, paw (with both hands), lay and roll. Elson could take the credit for that, he has trained her so well. When I have a chance I will send you a video of her doing everything, it’s really cute. Once again I would like to thank you for our addition to our family. Enjoy the pictures! Thank youMelissa, Elson and Quinn

Jimmy

I wanted to send you guys an email to update you on Jimmy, who is now named Mason.

He has settled in wonderfully and is my shadow now, never letting me out of his sight. We are working on his apprehension with guys and with his crate training, both of which are already coming along well. I have to commend you all on whatever you must have been doing right because he is SUCH a sweet dog and his sit and walk on leash are phenomenal :).

He actually met my family’s one year old lab mix yesterday when my mom came to visit. They had a ton of fun together romping around. He is currently laying half on my lap as I write this and getting LOTS of love. Thank you again for all the great care you gave him. He is such a wonderful dog and everything I was hoping for!

-Janet and Mason

Kat Ballou (formerly Leonia)

Just a quick update and a photo.... As you can see from the photo she has settled in quite well. She peed successfully outside and got through the night dry in her “house”. We have the pink towel you gave us for the ride home in her house with her bed. Her house is in the family room where we all spend most of our time. She goes in and out of it all the time and likes to store her new favorite toys in there. The birds have been okay about her presence and most seem nonplussed with the exception of Alex, our African Grey, who growls when she walks by their room. Which, by the way, is also funny. Our Grey growls, but our dog doesn’t! Actually, we haven’t heard Kat make any sound aside from a little whine when we came down this morning. I think her bladder was full. We took her out and got pee and poop with relative ease. We do like the fact that her tail wags and thumps her house when ever we come near. We think she’s the perfect dog and are glad no one else thought so before we got there. Thanks for taking such good care of her for us. We are a happy dog family with our Kat! Penny, Will, Liam & Theo Hobbie

Church is a 2 year old female gray cat who is available for

adoption. She prefers to be an only pet, and resides happily in our upstairs offices. She would

make a wonderful companion!

Volunteer Joan Izzo arranges items during the annual Holiday Fair.

A Last Will and Testament is a legally enforceable statement of your wishes with respect to the disposition of your assets, including savings and real estate, upon your death. After executing a will, you can change it anytime by signing a codicil to the will. Both your will and any codicils must be properly signed and witnessed as required by the laws of your state.

Many people don’t bother to make wills. No one likes to think about their own death, but you should have a will. If you don’t the State will appoint an administrator and your assets will be divided as required by the laws of your state. If you have relatives who are unhappy with the division of your property, extended and costly litigation could delay the settlement of your

estate. You can avoid that by setting out in a will what you wish to happen to your property.

Consider remembering Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter in your will. We are here for homeless and abandoned cats and dogs that can’t fend for themselves. A bequest is a wonderful way to ensure that your legacy will make a difference for thousands of animals who will need our help in the future to find safe and

loving homes. If you do, call an attorney today. If you don’t have a lawyer, ask your friends or relatives for a reference or call your County Bar Association to get a referral for a lawyer who specializes in wills and estates.

Have a happy tail you would like to share? Please email us at [email protected]. We always enjoy hearing from you!

Mary M. Rafferty

She already has several of her own ‘favorite’ spots here at home, including a couple of window seats (secured screens and storm windows in tact). It’s been so much fun watching her explore, play, and make herself at home. I look forward to years of caring for her and in return having her companionship. She is a real ‘Sweetie’, which has becomeher nickname. I have attached a photo which was taken just a couple of days after she entered her new home.

She would

Mt. P l e a s a n t A n i m a l S h e l t e ranimal crackersThe Newsletter of Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter Spring 2010 www.njshelter.org

Every cat has a story and although we would love to give all 70 of them, here are just a few:

GERALDINEGeraldine, a gorgeous black domestic shorthair, was a happy resident for the past 2 1/2 years. In January 2010, Geraldine finally found her

forever home with a wonderful woman who wanted a “black lap cat” after losing her own “black lap cat” after 22 years.

MIECEThis long haired grey feline is a very handsome fellow. BUTTERSCOTCHShe may be only 3 1/2 pounds but don’t let that fool you!

Larry Treat and Pat Oliveto, both of East Hanover, for their work as volunteer “Mr. All of these projects were vital to our efforts of keeping our animals safe and well loved at Mt.

Every cat has a story and although we would love to give all 70 of them, here are just a few:

GERALDINEGeraldine, a gorgeous black domestic shorthair, was a happy resident for the past 2 1/2 years. In January 2010, Geraldine finally found her

forever home with a wonderful woman who wanted a “black lap cat” after losing her own “black lap cat” after 22 years.

MIECEThis long haired grey feline is a very handsome fellow. BUTTERSCOTCHShe may be only 3 1/2 pounds but don’t let that fool you!
