VOLUNTEER GROUP

Rizwan Ahmad

I am doing Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) from University Of Central

Punjab. My 10th semester has been started so the specialization. My major is in marketing. After

completion of my BBA, I will be doing my MBA from the same university. I have planned to

have my career in textile industry. My group worked voluntarily at SKMCH & RC for 14 days.

I enjoyed this experience as I got many things to learn. Talking about the hospital, the efforts of

people of SHMCH & RC are extraordinary. The hospital is providing its best for cancer

patients. I would like to appreciate the work this hospital has been doing since it was built.

Rabia Ijaz

I am student of BBA (hons), my institution name is UCP (FMS). I am in 10th semester

and doing specialization in marketing. I decided to have major in marketing because of my

interest in diverse knowledge and I believe I will learn a lot of news things after having my

degree by the grace of Allah. I and my group fellows chose SKMCH & RC for our volunteer

service. During the service I get to know the functioning of this hospital which is remarkable.

The hospital is performing outstanding services for the cancer patients. I really value the efforts

done by all people working for SKMCH & RC.

Sobia Sarwar

I am doing BBA (HONS) from (FMS) UCP. Currently I am in 11th semester and

enjoying my specialization in MARKETING. After my graduation, I have planned to do MBA

from the same university, INSHA-ALLAH. I joined SKMCH & RC with my other group

fellows for doing volunteer service there. It was an excellent experience indeed. The spirit, with

which SKMCH is helping the cancer patients, is worth-appreciating. I am really inspired by the

systematic way of SKMCH incorporated in every project at SKMCH from PLAYROOM

facility to all clinical services. Thumbs Up for SKMCH & RC!!!

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES

Introduction to Hospital

The office assistant of our concerned medical social officer introduced us to the hospital and

its various departments (known as services building). We visited important medical

departments like OPD, Radiology Department, and Test Laboratories etc and were being told

about different procedures carried out in those departments (which were important to

understand in order to perform our various tasks under volunteer service; like how to take a

patient of walk-in clinic to OPD for laboratory tests, get receipts etc)

Walk-In Clinic & MSSP

Our supervisor (Mam Wajiha ) introduced us to the Walk-In Clinic, the department where

we were to provide our volunteer services. She told us about the activities in which our

volunteer group was to engage. This clinic comprises of following entities serving the cancer

patients:

o 1 Receptionist (Issues the token to the patients and enters their required data in

computer)

o 3 Doctors (Offer free checkups to the patients)

o 3 Nursing Assistants (Offer their help and guidance to the patients)

o 1 Psychologist (Provide counseling to the patient’s family so that they can take care

of the patient in a better way)

o 1 Medical Social Officer (Works under MSSP and provides social welfare services

to the needy patients)

Patients accepted in Walk-in Clinic are referred to Financial Support Office to provide full or

partial financial support (as per patient’s requirement and availability of funds) to the patient.

The MSSP i.e. Medical Social Services Project is governmental department which works

for welfare of poor and needy cancer patient in several ways. It either provides directly cash

to the patient (arranging money for rent or diagnostic tests from SKMCH & RC) or provides

certain things required by the patients (provision of seasonal clothes, toys for children,

shoes/toys for child patients availing the PLAY ROOM facility). Cash funds, clothes, juices

Page 9: Volunteer Report Final

(specially donated by Gourmet’s Muhammad Bibi Musafir-khana) and other objects are

collected from different donors and students coming for volunteer service.

We worked under MSSP and did various volunteer tasks which ended in a certain benefit to

the cancer patient. Those activities were:

Taking Case Histories

Case history is an important task to be done before providing help to the cancer

patient in any form. Because through case history we assess that whether a patient

deserves that help or not. During our tenure at SKMCH & RC; whenever a patient

came for help, we took personal information as well as the disease history of that

patient. After taking detailed case history, we used to consult our supervisor Mam.

Wajiha and then helped patient accordingly. It was the result of such activity that we

provided a wheel-chair to the mother of a patient child.

Guiding the patients in hospital premises (e.g. taking the patient to Test Labs)

We were also responsible for guiding the patients towards their concerned

department. For e.g. if a patient had to go to a lab for blood tests then we took that

patient there, also if that patient needed donation for that test then we also were

responsible for providing the fund, getting the receipt of the payment of that

laboratory test and entering that data in DONATION REGISTER (MSSP maintains

such information in its manual database).

Donation Collection

As earlier stated that the MSSP helps through the funds collected/donated by different

people including students, thus as volunteers we also had to collect donation for

MSSP. We contacted our every friend, family member, university fellows and

collected Rs/- 9900. This donation was apart from the wheel-chair (mentioned

above).

Writing Patient Reference letters

The patients seeking help from Walk-in Clinic & MSSP are dealt in three ways; they

are accepted if their disease level is curable, rejected if cancer is at last stage and

finally rejected but referred to other hospital due to unavailability of patient beds.

Walk-in Clinic refers such rejected patients to other reliable hospitals and it is the

responsibility of MSSP to issue the reference letter for the patient. Thus being the

Page 10: Volunteer Report Final

volunteer workers in MSSP, we also made those reference letters on daily basis and

put that information in the relevant registers (MSSP maintains such information in its

manual database).

Visit to Musafir Khana

We also visited two musafir khana(s) nearby SKMCH & RC where many of the

patients and their attendants live until they get free from the hospital. Such patients

are those who are getting treatment from SKMCH & RC in form of tests, radiations

etc i.e. they don’t have to live in hospital as such. The musafir khana(s) were;

o Muhhamd Bibi Musafir Khana: a trust based musafir khana run by owners of

Gourmet Bakers. They have named it after their mother. It has a direct link

with SKMCH & RC i.e. SKMCH & RC refer different patients/ attendants

(male or female) to this trust and as per availability of beds, the trust admits

the patients/attendants. It provides three time meal to the passengers. This

trust doesn’t receive any donation from anyone and it is solely funded by the

owners themselves. The passengers there were quite satisfied with all the

facilities provided by the trust from food to the cleanliness of the rooms, beds

etc. Recently this trust has installed splits in the rooms.

o Maggu Musafir Khana: this is another musafir khana run by an NGO. It is

not directly linked with SKMCH & RC means that people come here on their

own.

Visit to Financial Support Office

We also visited the Financial Support Office, where patients come to get full or

partial financial help. As earlier stated; patients once accepted from Walk-in Clinic

for the treatment in SKMCH & RC are further referred to the Financial Support

Office. This department further assesses the patient to make sure that only the

deserving patient gets the financial support. A detailed interview from the patient or

his/her attendant is conducted to analyze the financial health of that family. A team of

Financial Support Office works undercover to confirm this information on their own.

LESSONS LEARNED

Change in perception

Before going to SKMCH & RC, the perception we had in our minds was that as this hospital

is being run by a person like Imran Khan thus things here would be quite better than our

usual hospitals. But on seeing and analyzing its people, machinery and procedures, we

realized that situation at SKMCH & RC is far much better than we thought. The concern for

cleanliness (from hospital walking pavements to the kitchen operations), the PLAY ROOM

facility, the gift shop, the procedure for using utensils; all was remarkable. The most

astonishing attribute of SKMCH & RC was that every facility, procedure for treatment,

patient admittance etc was done on NON-DISCREMINATORY basis i.e. whether a patient is

private (bearing all expenses on treatment on their own) or on financial support from

SKMCH & RC, the patient will get the same level of service from hospital.

The spirit with which the human capital of SKMCH & RC is working is amazing.

Recommendations

Although SKMCH & RC is working at its best through its clear system but there is always room

for improvement. We have following suggestions:

1. There is a policy in Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre

(SKMCH & RC) that patients are required to complete certain tests before they approach

Financial Services Office. But some of the tests are so expensive that everyone can not afford.

SKMCH & RC should make a proper Zakat Department for the patients who come to walk-in-

clinic and who are not able to pay for the costly tests.

2. There were complains about the machinery failure, because of which many patients had to

suffer. SKMCH & RC should hire trained technicians who can fix the malfunctioning. There

should also be spare parts of the machinery for timely repair.
