CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga -#1 in NationNRC Health, the leading provider of in-depth customer intelligence in healthcare, announced the winners of its 2017-2018 NRC Health Consumer Loyalty Awards. CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga earned the number one ranking on the inaugural consumer loyalty list. The Consumer Loyalty Awards are the first, and only loyalty-based hospital rankings in the U.S. The awards recognize the top healthcare facilities garnering extraordinary loyalty from their patient populations today as identified and rated by over 300,000 U.S. consumers.

CHI Memorial Receives 4-Star RatingOnce again, CHI Memorial has received a 4-Star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The rating summarizes a variety of measures reflecting common conditions that hospitals treat, such as heart attacks or pneumonia. The overall hospital rating shows how well each hospital performed, on average, compared to other hospitals in the United States. The overall hospital rating ranges from 1 to 5 stars. The more stars the better a hospital performed on available quality measures. CHI Memorial is the only 4-Star system in the Chattanooga area.

CHI Memorial is the Best of the BestFor the 10th consecutive year, CHI Memorial has won Best Hospital in the Chattanooga Times Free Press Annual Best of the Best Awards. CHI Memorial was also recognized with the Best Emergency Room, and CHI Memorial Pediatric Diagnostic Associates was a finalist for Best Pediatrician.

Gifts of all kinds make a difference here at CHI Memorial, whether it

be gifts of time, talent or treasure.

From the thousands of volunteer hours donated, to the leadership

provided through service on boards, to the incredible fundraising

efforts by so many; thousands of lives are positively impacted by

these gifts.

The CHI Memorial Foundation’s board and staff are blessed to

engage with many in our community who help us to advance the

mission and ministry of CHI Memorial. Please take a few minutes

to read about three special people who are helping CHI Memorial

to deliver the very best patient care, through sharing of their time,

talent and treasure.

Thank you for trusting us to care for you and your family.

Hodgen Mainda,

Foundation Board Chair

CHI Memorial Named to 100 Great Hospitals ListBecker’s Healthcare named CHI Memorial as one of the “100 great hospitals in America.” According to Becker’s, hospitals included on this list have been recognized nationally for excellence in clinical care, patient outcomes, and staff and physician satisfaction. These institutions are industry leaders that have achieved advanced accreditation and certification in several specialties. The list also includes industry innovators that have sparked trends in healthcare technology, hospital management and patient satisfaction.

Becker’s selected hospitals for inclusion based on analysis of ranking and award agencies, including U.S. News & World Report’s 2018-19 rankings, CareChex, Healthgrades, CMS star ratings, Leapfrog grades and IBM Watson Health top hospitals.

Time, Talent and Treasure are all unique gifts made

from the heart, each as unique as its donor. We love

to hear your stories about why you choose to give to

CHI Memorial Foundation. Often those stories begin

with a patient experience as they did with each of

those featured in our annual report this year.

Because of donors like Martha, Marilyn, Terry

and you, we are able to serve the healthcare

needs of this community every day through free

and accessible cancer screenings on our mobile

mammography and lung coaches, community health

clinics including our geriatric clinic serving the

at-risk elderly community of Boynton Towers and

surrounding neighborhoods, services for patients

to help navigate through treatment to survivorship,

scholarships to train future nurses, and facilities and

equipment that provide state-of-the-art care. We

could not do these things without your gifts of Time,

Talent and Treasure.

As we frequently remind our donors, 100% of every

dollar you have entrusted to us has stayed here for

the benefit of the people in this region. Through

your generosity thousands upon thousands of our

citizens have received the best healthcare available!

Best Wishes,

Foundation President and Chief Development Officer

“Because of donors like Martha, Marilyn, Terry and you, we are able to serve the healthcare needs of this community every day…”

President’s Message

I was diagnosed on Valentine’s Day in 1987 with breast cancer. At the time I was

a preschool teacher preparing a party for my school children. My doctor called

the school asking me to come in for a discussion regarding my biopsy report –

and bring someone with me. This diagnosis forever changed my life. I had a

lumpectomy followed by 30 radiation treatments. I was blessed to be able to

continue to work full time, having two children in college and one in high school.

This diagnosis has given me a better outlook on life. I am grateful for each and

every day of life. Every day is a blessing. Following my retirement, I went back to

school graduating cum laude from Chattanooga State and immediately began

volunteering at CHI Memorial. It is truly a ministry to volunteer in the MaryEllen

Locher Breast Center and the Center for Cancer Support Bridges program.

Currently, I’ve volunteered for 3,302 hours with no plans to stop anytime soon.

Most importantly, I have a purpose in my life – sharing my experience with others

and the valuable resources that are available to all at CHI Memorial.

Caring Spirit ProgramOffering a hand to hold….giving a reassuring smile…going an extra step…sharing an encouraging word. Simple gestures of kindness mean the most to us. Patients, family members, and friends are often grateful for the difference caregivers make in their lives during their time here at CHI Memorial. As a gift of thanks, donations are made to the CHI Memorial Foundation and a note of appreciation is included. The Foundation presents Caring Spirit Awards as a way to recognize our wonderful caregivers and commemorate the generosity of our donors. These donations are returned back to CHI Memorial to support services chosen by the donor.

T R E A S U R E S M A K E A D I F F E R E N C E

In 2002, my wife Danette Henry, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Dr. Charles

Portera performed an extensive surgery the following week. As soon as she

had recovered enough to handle it, he had her complete a round of several

chemotherapy treatments. At that time, the treatments were administered in a

converted doctor’s office that was in an office building connected to CHI Memorial

Hospital. There was only one private room in which to administer the treatments.

Most of the treatments took place in two small “group living room” type areas

where treatments were administered to multiple patients at a time. Thus, spouses

or other family members usually could not be with the patient during the

treatments, which normally lasted for several hours. After Danette’s death in 2008,

the family wanted to do something positive to benefit other cancer patients and

their families and in some way thank CHI Memorial Hospital for the excellent care

she received. The Foundation staff assisted us in establishing the Danette Henry

Memorial Ovarian Cancer Fund at CHI Memorial Foundation. We have been able

to raise approximately $250,000 through an annual golf tournament to benefit

cancer related programs at CHI Memorial Hospital. Part of the proceeds went

toward the family oasis in the new, state-of-the-art, Infusion Center. My hope is

that CHI Memorial will continue to keep the focus on the overall experience for

patients and their families. It is much more than just the medical outcomes that

are important.

Giving Societies (cont’d)L E G A C Y S O C I E T Y

The Legacy Society recognizes an estate gift established during a donor’s lifetime. These generous, forward-thinking people have made arrangements for CHI Memorial to be included in their estates by remembering us either in their wills or through some other type of estate planning instrument. If you have included CHI Memorial in your estate plans, please notify our office so we may include you in the Legacy Society.

MAGIC — Memorial Associates Giving to Improve our CommunitySince its inception in 2003, CHI Memorial associates have generously given over $2.5 million dollars through contributions to MAGIC. Every day, we are called to respond to the needs of others around us, whether it’s our patients, the underserved in our community, or our fellow co-workers. The 2018-2020 MAGIC campaign supports the Employee Emergency Fund helping associates from all departments and campuses to receive assistance during a time of crisis and supports individual departments with funding for projects and equipment.

I’d just joined the CHI Memorial board in August 2017 when my father, Tommy Helms,

was suddenly taken very ill. A healthy, active, engaging person and the center of my

world, he had an intense headache and pain. Dr. Arlene Donowitz recommended

he be taken to the Emergency Department at CHI Memorial. The Infectious Disease

doctors determined Pop had contracted West Nile Virus. He died from complications

of the virus within two weeks. While I remain devastated and heartbroken by the

loss of Pop, I know he had the best care available, and I remain in awe of the staff,

physicians and facilities as well as the caring compassion of all the nurses in the

intensive care unit at the end of his short illness. I stay involved with CHI Memorial

for the care Pop received, and I am an active spokesperson for the standard of care

all receive at CHI Memorial facilities. CHI Memorial has a strong mission and capable

leadership, and I hope to continue to grow and expand its mission. The message is

easy to share with others, and I know the on-going work of the Foundation is easier

because of CHI’s past and current success. The future is very bright and healthcare

remains an important issue for all. CHI Memorial is on the forefront of healthcare

services in our region, and I would like to commend the Foundation for their work

to make more facilities and services possible.

All proceeds stay in our local community benefitting the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center at CHI Memorial. The generosity of the sell-out crowd helped bring the total amount raised during 14 years of this annual fundraising gala to more than $4.2 million.

Special thanks to our presenting sponsor First Horizon Bank and our more than 100 sponsors who made “The Greatest Show” the 2019 most spectacular event in Chattanooga.

Color Chattanooga Pink! Each January for the past 14 years the Pink! gala has been held to raise funds to support the nationally recognized MaryEllen Locher Breast Center. Most importantly, Pink! has raised funds to ensure top-notch breast cancer detection and treatment capabilities right here at home, and last year alone more than 30,000 patients were served by the Breast Center regardless of ability to pay.

So many people have come forward to ask how they can help support this vital cause, so Color Chattanooga Pink! was established the week leading up to the Pink! gala, January 21-26, 2019.

Led by our Color Chattanooga Pink! co-chairs Mark Hite and Libby Peigen, the response from our community was tremendous and inspiring. Restaurants created new pink drinks, schools had pink out basketball games and encouraged students to wear pink, businesses lit their buildings pink and encouraged their employees to wear pink and much more. While the activities that are chosen can raise funds, they do not have to – our goal is to rally the community behind this important cause and Color Chattanooga Pink! Thank you Chattanooga!

Cam Busch Endowed Arts for Health Lecture SeriesCHI Memorial Foundation hosted the 19th annual Cam Busch Endowed Arts for Health Lecture Series on Thursday, April 11 at the Hunter Museum of American Art. Guests were entertained by Nashville singer/songwriter Steve Dean. Dean has co-written nine number one hits for artists such as George Strait, Lee Greenwood, Reba McEntire, and The Oakridge Boys. Mr. Dean is also part of Operation Song, traveling with Don Goodman to Chattanooga every Wednesday to write with veterans from World War II through Iraq, helping them tell their story through the healing power of music. As a singer/songwriter, Dean gave his audience a behind-the-scenes look at the inspiration for, and why, these songs were written. He also discussed the art of songwriting’s impact on the healing process. Performances by the East Lake Expression Engine and Chattanooga Ballet shared the stage with Mr. Dean.

The Cam Busch Endowed Arts for Health Lecture Series is part of CHI Memorial’s Arts in Healthcare Program which uses performing and visual arts to enhance healing. CHI Memorial was one of the first community hospitals nationwide to offer arts programming to create healing environments, enhance mental and emotional recovery and provide soothing ambiance for patients, visitors, families, staff, volunteers and the medical community.

The Arts in Healthcare Program is led by the Arts in Medicine Council which consists of 17 volunteers who donate their talent and financial support for the continued development and sustainability of the program at CHI Memorial.

5K & Walk Benefits CHI Memorial’s Elizabeth R. Smith Melanoma ProgramSkin cancer is the most common cancer and affects men and women of all ages. Melanoma causes the most skin cancer deaths. Elizabeth’s Outrun Melanoma 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk is held each year in honor of Elizabeth R. Smith with all proceeds benefiting the Elizabeth R. Smith Melanoma Program at CHI Memorial. This program is focused on outreach and education to decrease the incidence of melanoma and diagnose it earlier through educational events, skin checks and partnerships with area dermatologists.

This year’s event was held on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at the Enterprise South Nature Park. We are grateful for the hundreds of runners and walkers who braved the rain to help raise awareness of skin cancer and support a great cause.
