“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing

through the word of Christ.” Romans 10:17

September 8 marks an important date for us here at

St. John’s. The first Sunday after Labor Day is a

time of transition for people. People have taken

their last trips of the summer and we get back into a

more “normal” schedule. For St. John’s, it is the

time when we resume Bible study and Sunday

School. It is a time for us to resume a more

intensive study of God’s Word.

In adult Bible study, we will be studying what is

called “Church and Ministry.” We will be looking

at what God’s Word tells us about the office of the

holy ministry and how it relates to the church. It

will be a wonderful opportunity for us to consider

the blessings we receive by being a part of God’s

Church and grow in our understanding of how God

desires for pastor and people to work together to

carry out the work that He has given us.

On September 10, we will also begin a new unit of

adult instruction. This is a wonderful opportunity

to review the basic teachings of the Lutheran

Church. Please invite anyone you know who might

be interested in membership at St. John’s and come

with them.

I hope that all of the members of the congregation

will make the study of God’s Word a regular part of

their lives. We know that God will pour out great

blessings upon us through our hearing of His Word.

St John's Ladies Aid

August 1, 2013

The Ladies Aid held its regular meeting on

August 1 in the church basement.

Arliss Dettmering opened the meeting with

prayer, and Ruth Jones and Arliss Dettmering

led the devotion and topic from the National

LWML Convention which was held in

Pittsburg, PA earlier this summer. The theme

was “Quenched! By the Water.” The Bible

reading was John 4:4-27. The LWML song,

“Lutheran Women One and All,” was sung.

Twenty two members were present.

Minutes from the June meeting were approved

as read. Correspondence was read from Charlie

Russell, the family of Fran Koschnick, and the

Ron Lenington family.

The treasurer’s report was given and filed

for audit. A collection for mites was taken.

Human Care Committee member, Arliss

Dettmering, read a thank you note from Mrs.

Diana Karlen for our prison ministry donations

of devotional materials and Bibles. Phyllis

Henegar reported that she sent care packages to

two military service members of St. John’s.

Lois Krumwiede reported that quilts are

currently being sewn at home and that quilting

at church will begin again in September.

Betty Plath reported that root beer and

strawberry floats were the refreshments for

Prairieview bingo. Items such as jewelry,

lotion, and air fresheners as well as little

packages of crackers and candy bars can be

donated for prizes.

Ruth Cluver reported that the bake sale at

Buckley Fun Day did very well, but there were

fewer children than usual at the toy walk.

Charlie Russell was given a monetary

donation from the Ladies Aid Tuition

Assistance Program since he is a full time

student at a LCMS college preparing to be a full

time church worker.

The group also decided to adopt a student

from the St. Louis Seminary this year.

The Ladies Aid Ice Cream Social will be

held on August 18 from 10:30 until 1:00 in the

school lunchroom. Work assignments were

discussed, and a sign up sheet was passed

around for pies. Also, help washing dishes is

needed at school on Friday, June 16, beginning

at 8:00.

The Ladies Aid will again provide baskets of

baked goods for the Knights for Christ CLHS

Auction. A list for donations was passed around,

and the baked goods need to be taken to Lois

Teske by noon on Saturday, August 17.

Ruth Jones reported from the National

Convention that the new goal for Lutheran World

Relief quilts is now 500,000 and that eighteen

mission grants were approved.

The Danville Zone Rally will be held at Good

Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hoopeston and

hosted by Hoopeston and Loda LWML societies

on September 19. The ingathering will benefit the

New Beginnings Women’s Center, Watseka, IL

and the Women's Care Clinic Danville. Items

needed are diapers, infant clothing, onesies,

sleepers and almost anything needed to care for a

baby. Registration is needed by September 8.

The Prairieview Fall Festival will be held on

September 6 and 7. St. John’s has been asked to

donate 6 pies.

The Ladies Aid/LWML gratefully

acknowledged a monetary gift from St. Paul’s

Lutheran, Sadorus, in memory of Arthur Endorf to

be used for purchasing Bibles, catechisms, and

hymnals for St. John’s school children.

The September serving committee will be

Arliss Dettmering and Linda Kottke.

The August flower committee is Linda Kottke

and Donna Steiner. The August visiting

committee is Norma Hofer and Wanda Ilse.

The birthday song was sung for those

celebrating August birthdays: Linda Kottke,

Alberta Weber, Lois Krumwiede, Sherrilyn

Hoopingarner, Donna Steiner, and Mildred

Bormet.

The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer and

the common table prayer, and refreshments were

served.

The school year has gotten off to a great start! We got the year off to a solid start with our opening

chapel service where we were given the chance to

hear God’s Word and ask for His blessing on the

school year. It has been amazing to see how

smooth the transition from summer vacation to the

school year has gone. As of the first day of school,

we were blessed to welcome 18 new students to St.

John’s with a total enrollment of 110 students.

That is an increase from last year’s enrollment of

94 students.

Mentors Needed - Do you have 30 minutes a week

to share with a student at St. John’s? We need

adult volunteers to join our mentoring program

which provides support for the academic and social

development of our students. If you are interested

in becoming part of this rewarding program, please

contact the school office at 394-2422 for more

information.

A BIG THANK YOU Wow! All summer we have waited to have hot

weather; and wouldn’t you know it, it’s in the 90s

the first week of school. But here at St. John’s, we

are not sweating thanks to our new central air

conditioning!! Phase two of our renovation project

is complete and what a difference it has made! Not

only is the central air wonderful, but the new

lighting throughout the school has also had a

positive impact! It was amazing this summer to see

all the hard work that went into having the school

up and running for the first day. Beside the

workers themselves, all the people who have given

of their time and talents to lend a hand - all the

parents, church members, and volunteers who

moved out all the classrooms and then weeks later

moved them all back; the custodian, Mrs. Hector,

cleaning up the same mess and dust all summer

long; the teachers who worked diligently to have

their classrooms unpacked, organized, and ready in

a short amount of time; Ms. Tina, who also had

little time to get her area cleaned and put back

together; Mrs. Niemann, who gave of her time to

St. John’s Lutheran School exists to teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to assist families

in following our Lord’s commands by providing sound Christian training for children.

Philosophy We, at St. John’s Lutheran School in Buckley, Illinois, believe that each child is a child of GOD; created by the Father, redeemed by the Son, and sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, empowered by the congregation and supported by the children’s parents, we teach using developmentally appropriate methods and practices. Our goal is to fulfill each child’s potential by teaching excellence in character, education, and leadership throughout the integrated curriculum using sound Lutheran doctrinal principles based upon scriptural truth.

Classroom News

Pre-K It is hard to believe that summer is over. I hope everyone had a great summer! The start of our 2013-2014 school year has been going great! I'm very excited to start this journey. Preschool has been blessed with several new families this year. Our 4 year old class has 13 students and our 3 year old class has 10 students. We've been getting used to our daily routine and plan on having lots of fun and learning together! Kindergarten Wow! It’s hard to believe that school is “up and running.” This summer’s work on the renovation was a great accomplishment made possible by all of the generous donations of time and money. As usual, the hot weather has arrived, yet we are very comfortable as we work and play in kindergarten. We’d like to thank everyone who helped to make that possible. Last week the kindergartners started learning the daily routines and each others’ names and we being assessed. Now we are ready to start the real learning as we begin the year with our lessons on creation. Soon we will be viewing nature firsthand when we go on a field trip to Mrs. Sturm’s garden. We’re off to a good start and we’re eager to learn. Grade 1 It is hard to believe that summer is over and school is back in session! The first graders have transitioned very well into a new grade and a new school year. We are looking forward to another school year filled with fun learning opportunities. In just the few days of school we’ve had, it’s been fun to get to know one another, as there are many new students in first grade. We also reviewed letter sounds and sight words, and look forward to digging into more reading and writing as the year goes on. In religion we spent time learning about how God created the world. It is amazing to learn about God’s marvelous creation. What a powerful God we have!

As we begin a new school year, the students

will grow so much in their knowledge of the

world around them. However, most important

of all, they will grow in their faith and in their

knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus

Christ. We look forward to sharing more with

you throughout the school year of the

wonderful things we will be learning! Have a

wonderful month!

Grade 2

The second graders had a very exciting

first week back at school. We have a

wonderful class with thirteen students, three

of which are new students. All ten of the

first graders from last year have returned

and we are very blessed to have added three

new girls to the bunch. We are ready to start

in on the second week of school and ready to

learn a lot about everything. Second grade is

a new and exciting grade with a lot of fun and

exciting adventures and we are ready to start

finding out what they all are.

The school renovation has been a huge

benefit to our school and classroom. The

ceilings look great and brighten up the

classrooms. The best part about the

renovation according to many is the air

conditioning. Every school year starts out

with extremely high temperatures and it is

very difficult to study and get school work

done. However, this year, with the air

conditioning on, we have had a very

comfortable first week and have been able to

focus and concentrate. We are all very

thankful to be in a cool building on hot days.

Grades 5 & 6

It's hard to believe we have started

school already. After one week in the

students have started getting the hang of

bring back in the classroom. This year we

have 19 students in 5th and 6th grade. We

are really enjoying the renovations especially

the air conditioning as the summer heat has

started to kick in.

We have a bunch of fun planned for the year

and everyone is very excited.

Grades 7 & 8

The school year is off to a great start in 7 &

8 grades. With the return of the hot weather,

we are really thankful for the air conditioning in

our building. We are also thankful for the new

language arts materials that were purchased

that we are now using. As usual, the weeks to

come are going to be filled with

activities. Everyone is anxious to begin working

on their speeches for Speech Contest to be held

in October and November. The class is quickly

preparing for the rapidly approaching choir

chime performance at Prairieview on September

6. As we settle into the routine of a new school

year, it is easy to see that this school year is

going to fly right by.

Junior High Youth Group will be having a

“back-to-school” game night on Sunday,

September 8, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00

p.m. Bring either a snack or dessert to share,

pizza, and drinks will be provided. Also bring

any games you would like play! Please RSVP to

Miss Meyer by Friday, September 6.

Senior Lutheran Youth Fellowship will be

kicking off a new year of senior youth activities

on Sunday, September 8. Senior LYF is

intended for all youth in 9th -12th grades. Our

first meeting of the year will be at the parsonage

(pastor’s house) from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. We

will have a cookout, volleyball and other games,

as well as doing some brief planning for

upcoming events. If you have any questions,

you can contact pastor. See you there!

Ladies Aid Garage Sale - The St. John’s Ladies

Aid will have a fall garage and bake sale on

September 27 & 28. If you have items you

would like to donate for the garage sale, please

bring them to Christ Lutheran High School on

September 23, 24 or 25. There will be workers

there setting up for he garage sale between 8:00

a.m. and noon. If you are willing to donate

baked goods, please bring them at 8:00 AM on

Rooted and Built up in Him - Each school year begins with a theme. This year the theme is “Rooted and Built up in Him” It is based on Colossians 2:6-7, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” When we are deeply rooted in Christ, we will be ready to take on the storms of life and the droughts that could otherwise kill our faith. We at Christ Lutheran promise to do our best to bring these teens through this difficult time in their lives with their faith strengthened, their knowledge broadened. We pledge to partner with Christian parents in this effort.

Meet the U of I Athletic Director - The University of Illinois Athletic Director Mike Thomas and his wife, Jeni, have graciously offered to meet and break bread with us at Buckley Lake on Sunday, September 15 from 3:00–6:00. End of the Trail Fish/Chicken Fry - Thank YOU to all who attended this wonderful event in the timber. Great food, great fellowship, and a great school. Proceeds benefit the CLHS extra-curricular and educational equipment in support of our students. Thank you to Dale & Beth Janssen and Troy & Jennifer Janssen for all you do. “Knight for Christ” Dinner Auction a Huge Success - What a BLESSING! It was the largest crowd we have ever had and one of the largest fundraising events also. Supporters enjoyed a meal of chicken and stuffed pork chop with a garden salad, mashed potatoes, green beans, and red velvet cake for dessert. Pastor Shawn Boylan gave the invocation. Principal Sandy Spitz welcomed the crowd. The stage was set and when the “Moonshine Trip” brought $400. We knew we would be in for a great evening. For those who don’t know about the town of Moonshine (population 2), this is a tour of the area south of Kansas, IL by Jim and Ruth Biggs, included is a hamburger at Moonshine. Other items on the live auction included the 49 Plymouth, trips to South Africa, Branson, MO, and also to Mackinaw Island, patio chairs, pie of the month, a cook out with the U if I athletic director, and so much more. The “Fund a Need” donation raised a total of $22,000 for textbooks and mortgage payments. The evening ended with the crowd joining together to sing the Doxology “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow.” It was wonderful. THANK YOU to all who came, all who donated, all who bid, and all who enjoyed. You are special people. May God bless each of you.

Women interested in the deaconess program are

Central Illinois District Scholarship Sunday is

September 8. It seems like no one is able to get

much of a guaranteed return on their investments

lately. Passbook rates are less than .1%, CDs less

than 1%, even 30 year bonds are less than 3%. “So

where can I get a ‘good’ return on my

investment?” you may be asking. My suggestion:

“How about investing in future pastors, teachers,

and other professional church workers.” Their

return to the church will be tremendous and

immeasurable: babies baptized, children taught the

saving Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Lord’s Supper

given, sins forgiven in Jesus’ name, weddings and

funerals performed, the Gospel preached, and

God will be glorified. You now have an

opportunity to invest in the training of future

pastors and teachers by making a gift to the Central

Illinois District Scholarship Foundation. You and

the entire church will reap big rewards. Please

make checks payable to: CID Educational

Scholarship Fund, 1850 N. Grand Avenue West,

Springfield, IL 62702.

the prison ministry. Any version and soft or

hard cover is acceptable. If you wish to

donate to share God’s Word with prisoners, a

box will be on the pew along the south wall

of the church basement. This collection will

continue until further notice. If you have

questions, call Arliss Dettmering 394-2542.

Considering adoption?

Lifelink International Adoption is seeking families interested in adopting from Korea. We’re receiving child referrals again after a temporary break and have a limited number of families on our waiting list. Our South Korean program is one of our most enduring (twenty-nine years) and reliable. We’re also pleased to note that South Korea recently signed the Hague Convention and is making preparations for its ratification. The convention establishes safeguards to ensure that intercountry adoptions take place in the best interests of the child. Learn more about Lifelink’s adoption programs at www.lifelinkadoption.org or contact us at 630-521-8281 or [email protected]. Lifelink International Adoption is a program of Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois.
