Before After

Bonsai AliveOur bonsai encourage admiration and pride from us. Their beauty fills us with a love of nature.

These works of art differ from other arts such as masterpieces of sculpture, technically crafted photography, or a gallery of framed art. Those are enjoyable, however, they are just captured moments in time, unchangeable.

Our Bonsai Art is alive! It is constantly changing, growing, and challenging us to work with it through daily acts of love. The compositions we continually give our care and skills to maintain, create partnerships on our conjoined life paths. Perhaps, as do sculpture, photographs, and even paintings, our bonsai help us recall a wonderful personal experience. This living art does not become a fixed point in time but achieves a development of that cherished memory through each seasonal influence that affects our plant. So too are our lives affected by external events as well as " the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to".

So please, continue to respect and care for all living things, our plants as well as all other sentient beings.

President Richard.

At our March meeting guest sensei, Dan “Doc” Ward presented a very educational demonstration exemplifying the skills and artistic t e c h n i q u e i n v o l v e d i n t h e somewhat del icate and finer aspects of carving to thus add simulated age and grace to our bonsai trees. “Carving is the art of making your bonsai look naturally old and weathered”, said Ward, as he went on to explain, then later demonstrate, that with carving one may create deadwood that can often be incorporated into a design, and may even be the focal point of the design for many trees. Cutting against the grain with a tool will look man-made however, cutting with the grain will always

look natural. You can also remove some, if not all, a tree’s natural or man-made imperfections in what might otherwise be the perfect bonsai. After carving a tree in the summer, always put your tree under shade for a couple of weeks. Carving and incorporating deadwood into a composition is just one of the tools the artist has on hand to create the art of bonsai. ~

“Show and Tell” at Our March Meeting Pictured on the left, Nikie Hobba is holding her recently purchased “Orange Dream” Japanese maple. Nikie explained how she is planning to reduce the hight of the young tree to just where she is pointing, then to put the tree into a larger pot before spring.

Pictured to the right is Ed Wickman displaying a recent gift of a beautifully formed “Satsuki Azalea”. When asked as to the color of the blooms on his new azalea, the reply was, “guess well soon see”. Let’s hope Ed will bring it back for “Show & Tell” when it blooms.

- Letters From Our Club Members -Carving Demo InspirationDoug Lau        After our March club meeting’s demo by Doc Ward, I went home and took out my only once-used rotary carving tool that I purchased three years ago from Harbor Freight Tools. Then based on what I observed and learned in Doc’s presentation, I took a deep breath to gain some courage and started carving my crepe myrtle bush and hedge maple bonsai.             I actually enjoyed creating the look of nature-damaged tree tops and worn relief grooves on the sides of the trunk. Surprise...surprise...who knows what else I will carve in the future! Anyway, I am including photos of my carving job. I know they are not perfect and I have a long way to go, but I am satisfied with these results. Isn’t that what it’s all about? ~

- Feeding Your Bonsai - Feeding your bonsai regularly during the growth season is crucial for the healthy survival of your

little trees. A tree that is not in a pot is able to extend its root system looking f o r n u t r i e n t s ; bonsai however, are planted in rather small pots and need to be

fertilized on a regular basis in order to replenish their soil's nutritional content. In Next month’s newsletter we will again take a look at the simple, and quite basic aspects of how, what, why, and when we fertilize our bonsai.

MLBC President, Richard McKinstry has made arrangements for us to enjoy several bonsai classes this year at various nurseries in our area, the first of which will be held at Solomon’s Garden Nursery, Sonora, CA on April 20th from 10 AM to12 noon. For a fee of only $35 you will receive a one gallon Procumbens Nana Juniper, a pot, soil, screen, wire, styling assistance, (club members), and care sheet, plus a light refreshment.

5 - Insect, disease and critter control - Maintain defensive treatments for fungus.... Watch for and treat insect and scale infestations. Cage all fruit bearing trees to protect them from nightraiding, raccoons, opossums, deer, pets and alike........ 6 - The Sun - Rotate all trees at least once a month to insure even growth from all viewable angles of the tree, and too, so that they do not grow in just one direction, that is toward the sun’s rays only.

7 - Propagating -Now is the time for rooting some of your favorite cuttings for new spring growth.

1 - Watering - In one of our recent heavy rain storms, I grabbed my umbrella and rain boots to make a tour of my rather large bonsai nursery, just to assess any damage that may have occurred from fallen tree limbs or flooding, .. and to my surprise, I found several of my prize bonsai trees to be in great need of water. They were “BONE DRY”! Why? Well, it was me. I really didn’t want to go out and get wet in all that snow and rain, so I stayed indoors, warm and dry while the few plants that were dying from lack of water went completely unnoticed and unattended within a very protected area under the eves of my home. They are now recovering really quite nicely after a thorough soaking of hand watering. (My neighbors must have thought I had cracked up, standing there watering my bonsai in the driving rain). .... Remember, check on your nice bonsai one-in-awhile. They may need just a quick drink or debris removal.... They’ll love you for it. ~2 - Fertilizing - Mid March to late April is still a bit too early to consider applying any fertilizers to your still dormant bonsai, and do not apply fertilizers to recently repotted trees until at least one month after repotting. In Next month’s newsletter we will again publish an article on the simple, and quite basic, aspects of fertilizing your bonsai.3 - Repotting - Finish up with your late winter repotting and root pruning until the very first signs of warming spring weather is upon us.4 - Pruning/Styling - As with most all trees in our area, drastic pruning is best accomplished mid January through mid March, however you may lightly prune excessive small growth as necessary most anytime. Remove any old wire that has completed its job or may be starting to cut into tender bark and limbs.
