Expanding Direction: Friends of the Animal Shelter (FOTAS) has been busy since our last newsletter. As you know, we decided to help with spay and neuter for dogs and cats, as well as continuing to support the Animal Shelter. We see a vital spay and neuter program as the main way to reduce the exploding population of stray and neglected animals and, consequently, as a way of reducing needless euthanasia. Under the new program, FOTAS will give vouchers to the Animal Shel-ter and to selected veterinarians who, in turn, will distribute them to residents who truly need financial assistance. The vouchers will be redeemed at Noah’s ARC to offset a portion of the fee to spay/neuter Transylvania county residents’ pets. The program has already started and as of this newsletter printing there are 24 animals spayed or neutered thereby reducing the future number of unwanted puppies and kittens. In light of our new mission, FOTAS is phasing in a new name, “Friends Of Transylvania Ani-mals,” that matches the acronym FOTAS and better reflects our new programs. We thank you for your support for the shelter and the new spay and neuter program. FOTAS Board of Directors, William Briggs, Clyde Brooks, DVM, Sandy Briggs, Susan Miller, and Susan Zelle with Noah’s ARC staff Judy Rothe and Sandy Thompson look at the new spay/neuter vouchers.

FOTAS volunteers joined in Brevard’s Halloween fun to distrib-
ute information on our newest initiative: increasing aware-
ness of the need to spay and neuter animals in our county.
Many old friends stopped by the booth to congratulate us on
the new shelter and learn how we will help the county edu-
cate county residents on spaying and neutering. Animals who
are spayed and neutered live longer, healthier lives, are less
aggressive, and are not a nuisance to our community.
Volunteers distributed the new spay-neuter brochures and en-
couraged folks who are interested in a pet to stop by “the
county jewel” and see what our community was able to do
when we pulled together to help animals in need.
For information about the spay/neuter program, please con-
tact the county animal shelter at 883-3713.

FOTAS
Members
Meet! On November 6,
2014 the FOTAS
members met to
learn of the new
programs designed
by the FOTAS Board
of Directors to con-
tinue support of the
animal shelter by helping to reduce the number of unwanted animals surrendered to
the animal shelter each year. This is an exciting time for FOTAS and we invite you to
join us as a supporting member. Family membership is $60.00 and single member-
ship is $35.00. The membership dues is fully deductible and provides a member the
opportunity to share in the successes of the Friends as we continue to support our
beautiful new shelter ! Please Join Us Now!
One of the benefits of membership is attending meetings several times a year to hear
speakers present discussions of timely topics
such as spay/neutering. On November 6th,
Noah’s ARC’s Sandy Thompson talked about
the low cost spay/neuter clinic, and their
commitment to a smooth running operation
with high standards established by the Hu-
mane Alliance. Funding comes from fee for
services, grants, and donations, and FOTAS
is delighted to be an additional source of
funding for this critical community program.
We Need Your Help…
As the end of 2014
draws near we are reminded of the blessings that we have enjoyed re-
sulting from the community effort to provide the balance of the need-
ed funding for construction of the new animal shelter for Transylvania
County! We thank all who contributed to this effort and congratulate
each and every donor whose gifts made that possible. We raised more
than $440,000 during our campaign and have spent or reserved more
than $379,000 for the capital projects at the shelter. Our cost of fund
raising and general expenses was less than 10%. Now we are dedi-
cating our new fund raising and the remaining dollars from the original
campaign, to support the shelter through our spay/neuter voucher
program designed to reduce the number of unwanted pets that are
surrendered to the shelter. This is where you can help!!!
For every $35.00 donated one voucher is provided to a Transylva-
nia County resident to spay or neuter one pet who would otherwise be
subjected to giving birth to unlimited litters of puppies and kittens. To
put it into prospective, one female cat and a litter of seven, according
to the United States Humane Society can produce over 400,000 cats
over a period of time, if there is no intervention. The great thing about
this program is that the pet owners must also take responsibility for
their animals by paying the balance of the cost not funded by FOTAS.
Please help us by donating to support one, three, or more
vouchers during your 2014 year end giving!
Thank you,
Bill Briggs, President
When I was young I decided to have a tattoo. Now this took some real work, not being able to
speak human. However, after a little while I was able to communicate to my human parents that
I wanted a tattoo. So one day they took me to a veterinarian, and I got my tattoo on my tummy
or something like that. Anyway, they said the tattoo was a bonus badge for being a good canine
citizen. Sometimes the translation from the human language to dog gets muddled.
Now I have this beautiful tummy tattoo, and because I got mine many of my female friends de-
cided to get theirs. It is really in style, even more so than a pedicure or a new hairstyle (for poo-
dles). For some reason not all my male friends have a tattoo. Male dogs are funny. I’m spreading
the word that the tattoo comes as a special “one-time” bonus and that the girls like it.
A little advice: If your dog or cat has not been spayed or neutered, please look into it. Spaying or
neutering is really not all that expensive, and it stops unwanted puppies and kittens. By the way, I
am really proud of my tattoo and your dog can have one too. One of my cat friends told me that
tattoos are very popular among the felines. Please talk to your veterinarian or make an appoint-
ment at Noah’s ARC in Pisgah Forest to have your pet
spayed or neutered. It too can have a beautiful tattoo.
Love as always, Shelley
