Last Stretch of the 2018-2019 Lion Year
It is hard to believe that the Lion year is almost over. It seemed just
yesterday when I was sworn in as District Governor at the Lions
Clubs International Convention in Las Vegas. This has been a fun
and great year with so many accomplishments along the way. I also
learned so much from every Lion I met and clubs I visited. This is
the fun part of being a Governor.
We accomplished so much in service with 58,806
Lion hours from 44 out of 58 Clubs reporting service pro-
jects to MyLion. Service reports at MyLion
include service activities, fundraisers and meetings. I
encourage you to report all these activities in MyLion.
We are still less than 9 in membership. We added 203
new members, but dropped 212, a total of 2,148 members.
Let’s reverse this number to a positive membership. With
another month to go, let’s keep on recruiting new mem-
bers and retaining members.
LCI President Gudrun Yngvadottir extended the Service Grant’s
deadline to June 30, 2019. The Service Grant initiative is for any
club adding and reporting new members between April 1 and June
30. Officers of eligible clubs will receive the application via email
in July to apply for this grant which awards a total of US $35 for
each member , g iven in two ins ta l lments on
December 31, 2019 and June 30, 2020, if the new member stays ac-
tive.
Most of our Clubs are wrapping up the Lion Year with Charter
Night celebrations and Installations of New Officers, plus giving
donations to organizations. Do not forget to allocate funds for
LCIF Campaign 100 and LIF. Thank you for your generosity.
My wish is for all Clubs to receive the 2018-2019 Club Excellence
Award. Criteria and the applications are included in this newslet-
ter and available on LCI website. Please submit the completed
application to me by July 31, 2019.
I would like to thank our Advisory Team, especially our Zone
Chairs for holding great Region Meetings, Lion Terri Pasternik
for chairing an awesome District Convention, GMT-D Lion John
Barsanti for furiously and tirelessly encouraging clubs
and monitoring membership on a month-to-month basis,
GLT-D Lion Lori Chassee for holding Training
Seminars/Forum, GST-D Lion Jerome Perez for promot-
ing the new global service causes, District Treasurer Lion
Jim Addington for keeping our financial records in good
order and to my dear friend and District Secretary Lion
Lynne Legan for her efficiency, patience. and keeping up
with me. Thank you also to Lions Sandy Williams, Jess Galvez
and Craig Rice for an awesome District Newsletter, and to all
members of the District Advisory Committee (Cabinet) for all your
support and guidance.
Lastly, my sincere gratitude and appreciation to all clubs in
welcoming me with open arms and kindness, in sharing your
concerns, opinions and excitement. We are all in this together, and
with our efforts, we can reach others in need and go beyond the
horizon.
Always keep in your heart — “We Serve with
Kindness”.— District Governor Lion Susan Galvez

We Are At a Negative O N E!!
I just checked MyLCI and we are negative O N E for the year!
That is the best we have done for several years. I want to thank
all of the clubs for the great work they have done in bringing in new mem-
bers, and especially, in retaining the members we have.
We have one more month of the current Lion Yearn and with a little ef-
fort, we could be in positive numbers at the end of our year.
Continue to find new members and continue to work to keep our current
members.
June is a month when we traditionally "clean house", this year, let's talk to
members who have not paid dues or have said they were dropping to find
out why. What reason have they for giving up their membership in Lions?
What aren't we providing that is causing them to leave the c l u b ?
One last effort on our part could make a difference between a positive
year and just one more year we lost membership.
Lion John Barsanti
Global Membership Team Chair
Still Enjoying My Morning Coffee
For the record, I have not given up coffee. Several times
in speeches, I have mentioned that my personal
Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service contribution
matches what I spend daily on coffee. That is true, but I still have my daily
coffee. I guess that is having your coffee and drinking it too, to paraphrase
an old saying. The point is a small donation can make a
difference.
At a recent visit to a club, I was asked about goals. Of course, International
has a big goal for the Capital Campaign that is concluding the first year of
a three-year campaign. Personal goals can be smaller. An additional few
dollars over the next three years can make a huge impact on our Lions
service. One dollar a member is a million four hundred thousand dollars
across the world. How much more would $5, $10 or $50 make?
As a District goal, I realized that an average of $40 per member would
nicely exceed last year. Has your club averaged that? An extra 50/50 raffle,
a small fund raiser, or just some individual donations can make that
happen.
An interesting four-page section in the most recent Lions magazine has
much information, plus forms to make it easy for you to participate in the
Campaign. Please join your fellow Lions.
Let’s make June a big month for District 1-J.

Lions At Work
With one month left in this Lion Year we have hit 75% of the
clubs having reported their activities in MyLion/MyLCI so far
this year.
We have had 44 clubs report their service in the tool,
leaving 14 clubs that have yet to report a service activity this
year. The clubs in District 1J have reported 1,432
service activities and more than 58,000 hours of service, impact-
ing 385,000 people in our communities and the world.
In July, we start a new Lion Year with one of our
signature service projects on July 18th when we hold our 41st
Lions Fishing Derby at Shabbona Lake State Park for guests
with disabilities.
It is hosted by 13 Lions Clubs from three different Lions
Districts. Activities include pontoon and rides in a large voyager
canoe, fishing, a petting zoo, lunch, popcorn and games.
Events will run from 10 AM to 2 PM, weather permitting. We
generally have over 100 Lions working the event, and 200 to 300
guests. If you have the time, feel free to stop by and see our
Lions at work.
Finally, I want to thank all the clubs for their service this year.
The Lions have stepped up where there was a need, in their com-
munities, in the state with LIF, and globally, thru LCIF.
We still have one month left to make an impact this year, so let’s
continue serving, and finish strong.

There Soon Will Be A New Cyber Club
in the District
Currently, the Sycamore Lions Club is assisting its new Branch
Club, the District 1-J Cyber Lions Club, with the processing of
all necessary paperwork.
With 18 new members excited about joining, it won't be long
before this online club is able to assist other clubs within our
District with any volunteer needs that they may have.
All clubs should send info of up-coming events so that they are
added to the 1J Calendar at the appropriate time (at least 6
weeks before your event). Also, please include a contact number
or email address — that way those in the Cyber Lions Club can
work at events of their choosing.

Kicks For Cambodia
Elmhurst Leo Will Heuer is running a shoe drive for his non-
profit Kicks For Cambodia.
Kicks For Cambodia is a non-profit that Will started a little
over a year ago. He created it after his family took a trip to
Cambodia. The family went to the Cambodian countryside and
saw a lot of kids running around without anything to play
with or wear shoes.
Will took his passion for soccer and used it to help, donating
soccer balls, cleats, soccer jerseys and soccer nets.
The family has sent five shipments to Cambodia. Based on the
last shipment, the kids have requested more shoes.
Any help is appreciated – contact Will Heuer at
www.kicksforcambodia.com — to see how you can hope.
Publicity Pays!
From the Roselle Lion’s Roaring Lion News
We will have a 3/5 page ad in Time Out on the Friday before
the Fest. We will also have ads in every Daily Herald across
the suburbs on May 26. We will be in the Du Page main news
edition on May 31 and we will have a four page insert in news-
papers in Roselle and all surrounding towns.
Our very successful every door postcard mailing is being
utilized again this year. We will have a double size card in
four colors for the same amount as we paid last year.
Plus, we have been running 30-second commercials on cable
TV since May 20, written, edited, and proofread by PDG Lion
Bob Jilke.
In all, this year looks to be a great one for Roselle Lions Club’s
Rose Festival. All we need is good weather and YOU!

Red, White & BBQ at Westmont
Contributed by PDG Lion Jim Addington & Westmont Lion Sh
The Westmont Lions Club successfully completed its thirteenth
edition of the Red, White, & BBQ cooking competition and
festival.
We had 90 teams cooking in two contests on Saturday and Sun-
day. They cooked chicken ribs, pork, & brisket. They competed
for over $20,000 in cash and trophies.
Each day had a Grand Champion. On Saturday the Champ was
Boomerang BBQ from Texas, and on Sunday, the Champ was
Schuffletown Smokers from Indiana. (See photo on back page)
The contest is now international as for the last two years we
have had a team from Australia competing. The Competition
Chair PDG Lion Jim Addington was pleased with the quality
of the competition with one team on Saturday and a different
team on Sunday scoring “perfect” 180’s on one of their meat cate-
gories. Both teams received a special pin from the Kansas City
Barbeque Society (KCBS) for this accomplishment.
In addition to the main contest, we also had an amateur compe-
tition with 35 entries cooking chicken and ribs on Saturday and
a steak competition with 35 entries cooking rib eye steaks on
Friday. All these contests were judged by trained judges in the
various events.
For the general public there were 15 food venders selling BBQ,
pizza, crab cakes, lemon shake-ups, and more. Several bands
played over the three-day event and being a good Lions Club, we
had a beer tent.
It was estimated that the attendance for the event exceeded
15,000. The General Chair for the event, Lion Chris Svitak, said
that this could not have been successful without the many
volunteers and Lions who came out to work and help.
Now that this is complete, plans are already underway for the
fourteenth installment on Memorial Day weekend in 2020.

partnering with the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry to provide some extra food for the summer to local children. Summer can be a difficult
time for some children with food insecurity, and the groups hope to help out as much as possible with this program.

Bloomingdale Lions Club ordered a

Now, the club is wondering what to
do with the 1st bench! Ed. says
“Contact the Bloomington Indiana
Club and see if it would like it —
there’s only a Normal Lions Club in
Illinois, no Bloomington IL one. I
looked!!

June 2019 - 11 - 1-J Journal
Lions of Illinois Foundation
It’s Year-End Time
It’s nearing the end of Lion Year 2018-2019. It’s time to review
our 2018-19 budget and commitments. AND it is time for a new
budget for 2019-2020!
Your Lions Club is probably like many clubs; in that June is
the month to mail your final checks that help so many in your
community.
Lion Nancy and I have reports that list the donations given by
Clubs and Districts. Our goals for 1J LIF donations are based
on 2018 actual expenses. Our District, by year end, has always
been Number One. Thank you for all the hard work every Lion
and club has put forth this year.
Here is some feedback to a few areas where you provide funds:
Camp Lions: Adult and Children’s Camping Season starts soon.
Has your club sent your camp donation? Last year, we
provided camp for nearly 300. Expenses include staffing,
leasing and LIF expenses. The 1J goal is $53,000 of which our
actual received is $31,226. We are in second place.
Student Low Vision: Our goal is $18,500, of which our actual
received is $6,310. We are in third place. PLEASE DO NOT
SEND THE FUNDS DIRECTLY TO SPECTRIOS,
JACKSONVILLE OR CHICAGO LIGHTHOUSE. Your
entire check amount is sent to your designated group.
Adult Low Vision: Check out our new service of Mobility
Training. The cost of training is $65 per hour. Total donations
received amount to $6,204 as of May 31.
Leader Dog: Only three of our clubs are recorded as giving a
total of $800.50. I am sure there are clubs that are sending a
check directly to Leader Dog. PLEASE DO NOT SEND THE
FUNDS DIRECTLY TO LEADER DOG. Your entire check
amount is sent to Leader Dog!
BUT the Lions of Illinois Foundation funnels funds through
the John Deere Golf Classic (Birdies for Charity). So we all
miss out of lots of free $$$. Those we serve also miss out.
These are just a few of LIF services to consider in your club’s
year end giving. Thanks again for all you have donated and for
all you do to help. Our communities depend on Lions to step
up.
