By Craig McCollum This year the Milltown Murals Motorcade event in Lakeland Georgia featured cars on display on Main Street followed by a motorcade to Roquemore Park. Cars newer than 1949 were

displayed in the Courthouse parking lot and other parking lots downtown.

Many owners dressed in period attire and took advantage of the free food and drink. Lemonade and crackers was available downtown and ice cream was delivered to your curbside by the ice cream man riding an old style 3 wheeled bike. Coupons were given to each entrant for coffee and a roll at Mozzarella Mommas, a McDonalds sandwich and $5 at Huddle House. Huddle House offered free coffee during the motorcade. At the park, lemonade and ice cream were

also available along with hot dogs and boiled peanuts.

50/50 Drawing: Carol Love

Steven Litherland was the winner of the 50/050. In addition, a second drawing was held and Dan Rainey won an oversized “Goose Egg” compliments of Craig, Belle and some unidentified goose. Go figure!

Announcements & Reports:

Two ladies from the FSU Film School came to the meeting mainly to ask for vehicles to participate in a film. They needed to be vintage 1921. However, they would accept 1919-31 for this movie. They explained how they deal with vehicles and gave us an overall feel for the movie making experience. Their presentation was well received and helped allay our fears that cars would be abused in participating as some have been in the past.

Craig McCollum reported that the “Milltown Mural Mo-torcade” was held in Lakeland, Georgia on April 6th. About 10 of our cars participated.

Committee Reports:

Sunshine: Glenda Schanbacher

Glenda mentioned our need to keep in touch with Ray Bartell with cards, calls and prayers. We need to keep Wease and Sue in our prayers due to Wease’s health is-sues. Charles Gennie from “Pot Metal Restorations”.

Charles described and explained the processes he goes through for chrome plating, buffing and restoration of pot metal trim components. He went through the Triple Plat-ing Process that is the hallmark of his work. He brought samples of his work and passed them around. Don and Norm have had work done by Charles and have high re-gard for his work. He told of the efforts he puts forth in order to keep pieces of work arranged by owner and how he makes successful efforts not to lose items. We have all heard of missing parts that were sent out to Platers and

never seen again.

Article and Photos submitted By Peter A. Zulinke Once more, several club members gathered together and caravanned to Lakeland Georgia for their annual antique automobile and historic mural event. Some members headed there on their own and met up at the main street where all the old cars were parked. Nell Roquemore, the Host and Ambassador as creator of the Motorcade, was on hand to greet everyone. The event this year provided a return to the traditional parking on the main street and not in the hot sun. There were noteworthy opportunities that made the100 mile trip from Tallahassee much more enjoyable. In the information packets provided by the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, sponsor of the event, was a first thing needed, a coupon for a free cup of coffee and a Danish at Mozzarella Momma’s a Pizza shop, a great place for lunch. The Huddle House also provided a $5.00 gift certificate and McDonalds offered free apple pie with purchase of a value meal to name a few. There was even a new mural of William and Elizabeth Hughes, a successful farmer known as “Uncle Billy.” The Withlacoochee Quilting Guild from Valdosta had a large display as well. Oh yah, they also provided a DVD of the 2012 Motorcade. The best shot on it was our Jackson Gladwin playing his banjo and using his music on the rest of the video. All the shops were open and the local residents bent over backwards to make sure we were very well welcomed. It was fun to walk down the street to see all the antique cars and speak with old friends and new. The oldest car there was Norm and Kathy’s 1910 Buick which caught the eyes of a lot of spectators, as did all our cars. Highlighted this year was Rob Evans of Valdosta who brought two of his beautiful Packards. A great showing of people in period clothes relative to their cars was evident. Jackson in his 60’s bell bottoms and jacket, Jim and Peggy in 30’s attire, me in my knickers and bow tie and many others. Our Tallahassee Chapter of the AACA was well represented with the following members who made the two hour trip there: As pre-viously mentioned, Norm and Kathy’s 1910 Buick ; Craig & Belle McCollum - 1935 Plymouth Tudor; Bob & Nan Brown -1939 Plymouth Deluxe Touring Sedan; Mac & Shirley McCammon - 1957 Chevrolet Belair; Jackson Gladwin - 1968 Volkswagen; Jim & Peggy Tyson – 1931 Model A Ford Tudor Sedan; Randolph and Janie Brock attended while their 1936 Dodge Coupe was home with a bad headache L; And me, Peter Zulinke with my 1931 Chevrolet Special Towne Sedan. All of the cars did parade down the main street at 1:00 PM and ended up at Roquemore Park amid the shade trees and live music of the Sweetwater Creek Bluegrass Band and huge 5¢ hot dogs. All the while Fire Chief Gary Yeomans dispensed (as many as you wanted) free vanilla ice cream cups throughout the day from his hand made ice cream bicycle vehicle that looked like the old Good Humor providers of the 30’s. At 2:00 pm there was a drawing for a free iPad mini. I didn’t win L Of course, many of the downtown sites provided free lemonade and that was great for a hot day. Actually, it was not a real hot day, just right! All in all, it was a genuinely relaxing day. If you didn’t attend, you missed it! Maybe next year? Lakeland chamber of Commerce’s wrap up:

Another shop in town, we have found that works

with our hobby.

Neal Davis has been restoring and working on cars most of his life. Beginning in 1968 in Lake Munson area working out of the back of his car as N & E Speed Shop. He married, Nancy, his high school sweetheart in 1962. Their family grew with the addition of 2 girls and a boy. Neal graduated from college in 1970 with a degree in Education and served in the US Navy as a Submarine machinist. They continued their business, moving to South Monroe, Petty Drive, Tharpe Street and in 2004 to Quincy. Over the years the business has changed names – from N & E Speed Shop to N & E Speed & Machine, N & E Machine & Parts and currently N & E Resto-ration Machine and Parts, Inc.

At his shop, located at 1800 Florida Ave. in Quincy, he offers a number of services that are unique to this area. He will work on any old car or cars of interest. He can pick up and deliver, restore to drive or to show or if you just need repairs or a tune up. He has contacts for painting, making parts (if he can’t do it himself), and upholstery. He can order special parts, install them, get appraisals, help sell your car and negotiate with po-tential buyers on your behalf.

Neal has always been interested in high performance and drag racing. He has had numerous cars which he raced and modi-fied all of them. He is an active member in the soapbox derby, a member of local car clubs, and racing circles. His shop is used for car club functions and for friends to use. If you need to store a vehicle or work on one, you can rent space in his shop. He has a vast library of cars and data available for any-one to use for researching cars. To my knowledge, I don’t

know of anything Neal won’t do to help the hobby or hobbyist.

Southeastern Monte Carlo SS Club Visits Tallahassee April 6, 2013

By Craig Brown A low rumble was heard in Tallahassee on Saturday as a group of Monte Carlo Super Sports rolled in. Old-school NASCAR fans and those who love all things Earnhardt took notice as the distinct profile of the fourth-generation Monte Carlo that dominated the super speedways in the 1980s gathered in the capital city. These cars were not in town to do battle on the high banks, but for the 8th annual gathering of the Southeastern Monte Carlo SS Club hosted by local enthusiast Ken Kerby. The day began with a hearty breakfast at Denny’s where the cars got the attention of both patrons and staff. Many rushed out into the parking lot with cell-phone cameras flashing to show their friends what was happening right of Monroe Street. Some even missed part of the Springtime Tallahassee parade to gaze at the collection.

Some parents used the situation as an educational tool and had the young ones count the cars off as they entered the parking lot. Over breakfast, old friends reunited and new friends were made. Digital pictures of the latest projects were shown and discussed. If you needed advice or tips on Monte Carlos, this was the group to consult. Jim and Linda brought their first generation (1970-1972) Monte Carlo as a prime representative of what started the model line. Continued on the next page

Ken knows as much about barbecue as he does about Monte Carlos and demonstrated his mastery of the smoker by hosting lunch at his house. The pulled pork and ribs on the menu were easily the best in the Southeast. For the next event, the Monte Carlos traveled to the Sonic on North Monroe for the monthly cruise in. There are usually a couple of local Monte Carlo SS sightings at the Sonic, but this Saturday’s attendees seemed to enjoy seeing several parked in a row. Fourth generation Monte Carlos (1981 to 1988) are on the verge of antique status according to the state of Florida and the Antique Auto Club of America (AACA), but many are still on the road as daily drivers. These cars are still too new to be sought out by col-lectors and muscle car fans, so why does the G-body Monte Carlo SS have a following of devotees? Why would a car enthusiast spend their hard-earned dollars and restoration efforts on a Monte Carlo instead of a Camaro, Chevelle, Nova or Corvette? I searched for the answers to these questions during the weekend and learned a few things. The G-body cars including the Monte Carlo, Regal, Cutlass and El Camino were the last carbureted, full-frame, rear-wheel drive cars build by General Motors. If you ever turned a wrench on any General Motors product from the 1950s to the 1980s, almost eve-rything on these cars is familiar. They are easy to repair, easy to modify, and are light for their size (about 3,500 pounds). Most of us lived through the dismal fall in performance and quality during the end of the 1970s and wondered if we would ever again own a new car that was fun to drive (and had given up on ever seeing a new muscle car). Emission regulations, gas prices and insurance premiums had killed the evolution of the performance car. Continued on the next page

Page 12 Tallahassee Chassee May 2013

Page 13: Tallahassee Region Antique Automobile Club of ...traaca.org/Chassee/May13Chassee.pdf · Tallahassee Chassee May 2013 Page 5 Milltown Murals Motorcade in Lakeland, Georgia on April

General Motors saw a performance niche in the market place that was not being filled and needed a more aerodynamic design for their NASCAR racing effort. They had a good looking coupe, but needed to step up performance while maintaining reasonable fuel economy (all of life is a compromise). Their solution to these two problems was the Monte Carlo SS in 1983. GM could have taken the easy route and just slapped an “SS” badge and some stripes on a standard Monte Carlo, but instead streamlined the nose and tail. Power was provided with a revised version of the 305 cubic inch engine designated “L69” using available performance parts including:

Cross fire heads from the Camaro IROC Z-28 with a 9.5:1 compression ratio Camshaft from the L-81 Corvette Aluminum intake manifold 795 CFM Quadrajet carburetor Dual exhaust with high-flow catalytic converter

These changes weren’t enough to make the SS a dragster, but it did add 30 horsepower to the base engine while maintaining 17 mpg fuel consumption for city driving. Suspension and drivetrain upgrades for the SS included:

F-41 Heavy duty suspension (stiffer sway bars, ½” lower springs, heavy-duty shocks, extra front frame bracing) Quick ratio steering box TH200-4R 4-speed overdrive transmission with torque converter lock-up Limited-slip differential with an Eaton locker and 3.73:1 gear ratio

Page 14: Tallahassee Region Antique Automobile Club of ...traaca.org/Chassee/May13Chassee.pdf · Tallahassee Chassee May 2013 Page 5 Milltown Murals Motorcade in Lakeland, Georgia on April

The cars were retroactive by 1980s standards--throwbacks that paid homage to the performance and muscle cars on the 1960s. They sounded and looked like muscle cars, but handled better, had better brakes and got more mileage out of a gallon of dinosaur juice. The public was hungry for cars that were fun to drive and snapped up all the Monte Carlo SS’s Chevrolet could build. Even as someone with a lifetime obsession with Mustangs, I have to admit the Monte Carlo SS is a blast to drive. I know it is juve-nile to mash the pedal to the floor just to hear the giant secondaries in the quadrajet open up followed by the inevitable squeal of traction loss, so I am more likely to just enjoy the throaty burble of the small block V-8 through dual exhaust pipes at normal cruis-ing speeds. But if roasting tires is a priority, the Monte Carlo SS is a willing accomplice, even in stock form. If creature comforts are important, the Monte Carlo can be “upscaled” with a wide selection of options in a vehicle with plenty of room and a comfort-able ride. Looking under the hoods of the collection gathered in Tallahassee revealed some cars with genuine hot-rod engines sporting go-fast parts in the 350 to 383 cubic inch range. Others retained the 305 cubic inch engines from the factory. A few had suspension up-grades to improve handling. All reflected the joy and pride of their owners. By the end of the weekend I understood. The men and women who maintain and care for a Monte Carlo SS don’t do it because it may reach collector status one day or because it has a NASCAR pedigree or because others will envy them or because it can be built into a hot-rod with very little effort—they do it because something in the car speaks to them as no other car does. They are passion-ate about the Monte Carlo SS because of what it is—Chevrolet’s honest effort to provide a fun-to-drive performance car during a decade almost devoid of performance. Passion is what pulls people into the car hobby and holds their interest. Passion (about a favorite car make/model, dog breed, food, charity, etc.) is what makes people interesting. Having a discussion with someone who is passionate and interested in anything is always more rewarding than a discussion with someone who has no interests or hobbies. This is the common denominator in all car clubs, car shows, cruise-ins, and auto racing organizations: there will be interesting cars and people who are passionate about them.

This person contacted me about selling his 1963 Thunderbird.. Price is make offer. I told him it could be used maybe as a parts

car — Jack Hanhury.

If interested, my name is Kyle and my phone # is (407) 719-5611. This ’63 Thunderbird is very rusty. There are holes where the roof meets the quarter panels, holes in the trunk, rust in the engine compartment, rust on the fenders and quarter panels. Also, the roof is severely rusted, I am not sure if it can be saved. Floors seem to be solid. The interior is still in good condition for the most part. And I was able to get the engine to fire up about a year or two ago. I also have extra parts (including two tires) to go with the

car. The car is located in the driveway of my home in Chuluota, FL near Orlando. Some pictures follow:
