Mission Trip - June 16-21
The St. Paul’s missionaries are going to be “Making a Differ-ence through the Love of Christ” as they work hard around Lancaster County.
The activities for the week include helping two members of our congregation with work on their homes. A day spent at Clare House, a shelter for
women and children in Lancas-ter, will conclude with a meal and baby sitting for some of the mothers while they attend a parenting class.
We will also spend a day at Milagro House, a place for housing and education for homeless mothers and chil-dren, where we will provide yard cleanup or whatever the need might be.
Having some fun with the residents at United Zion Retire-ment Community will be yet another day well spent .
Of course we will have some
down time as well. The Team is staying at Refreshing Mountain Camp in Stevens, PA. While there we will have camp fires, a late night swim and a zip line canopy tour.
Please keep the Mission Team in your prayers the week of June 16-21.

Dominican Republic Work Project
On July 13, a group of seven individuals from St. Paul's will join six others from Lancaster, Ohio to work on a house-building project in Cambiaso, Dominican Repub-lic. This is an impoverished seaside village in a very hard-to-reach part of the country on the northern coast. The work is organized by the Village Mountain Mission Pro-ject, which has roots in the Boy Scouts of America (www.villagemountainmission.org).
During the week, with a team of locals, our group will help build a cinder block house. Very simple, no indoor plumbing or kitchen. Compared to other house struc-tures in the area (left), it is dryer and safer and will last longer. Though it is extremely primitive by our standards, the family that lives here will be healthier and happier.
This house will be in a place where most children never make it through high school, partly because there may not be one where they live. Historically, these are the people who make your sugar, send bananas to our su-permarkets, and make our clothing. For better or worse, our economy needs them. Although the per capita in-come of the Dominican Republic is $9,400 per year, it would be much less in the place where we are going. No one has health insurance. And medical care is difficult to come by anyway.
But the children are beautiful. And the Dominican people are extraor-dinarily happy. They know how to take care of each other, because they must. As they build, our group will learn much from them about faith, family, and contentment , as well as what it means to be a world citizen. We will learn what this means:
If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill’, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith. James 2:14-18.
The Dominican Republic Work Crew: Melissa Burkhart, Melissa Shumaker, Nick Brewer, Andrew Bucher, Emily Burkhart, Sandy Bareford, Rev. Nichols.

Between Floors. I had an unusual experience several years ago. I went to a UCC Conference meeting, got there on time (an achievement), and promptly became stuck in a parking garage elevator with eight other people. Being the closest one to the phone, I made the calls – every ten minutes for the next 40 minutes. There was a man named Skip on the other
end, who assured me we would be set free soon. We were all looking at our phones and watches, especially the man who was one of the keynote speakers at this event. Forty minutes is a long time to stand in one place, in a box, with no way out. We were keeping it light, but it was becoming less funny with each passing minute. I don't think anyone was about to crack, but it was becoming a possibility! Skip kept assuring me that everything would be okay. Then just as the humor of the situation had definitely passed and the air grown stale, the elevator moved and the doors opened.
On the way out of the building we met Skip, in a security guard uniform, who didn’t look anything like the Skip I’d imagined. He shook our hands as we walked past; survivors of the ordeal. There wasn’t anything he could do to fix the elevator, but he could answer our calls and use his own cell phone to get help.
Having company is definitely a plus in that situation! The elevator is a great thing when it works, and now I believe one of its best features is the phone on the wall. Every ten minutes or so, we needed to hear a voice from the outside. "You will be okay."
There is so much in life to be concerned about. Okay, worried and overwhelmed. If you are keeping your own life balanced spiritually, socially, and physically, etc., maybe you can be the assurance on the “other end of the phone” for someone. As believers, we are God’s lifeline to others, and I believe God puts us in those situations regularly.
From a distance, from prison, the Apostle Paul wrote to the Church in Philippi, in northern Greece:
“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying in joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ."
Philippians 1:3-6
Like any church in any time, I’m sure the Greeks in Philippi must have had anxieties of some kind, together and individually. Paul prayed for them, and they prayed for each other. They shared “in the gospel” (ministry of the church) together. And God contin-ued the good work in them, as God will in us. That is most fulfilling – to know God is working in us. I see it happening, clearly.
Thanks for all you do to make a difference through the love of Christ.
See you soon –

Reaching out...
Melissa Shumaker to Spain
Our Own Missionary. Since January, 2011, Melissa Shumaker has been the Interim Director of Contemporary Wor-ship, and we are thankful for the way God has used her among us. But she has always had a longer range plan. In March, the Church Council of St. Paul’s voted that SPUCC become Melissa’s “Sending” or sponsoring church as she travels to Spain for a 3-year mission term which begins in September
2013. While her main denominational financial and functional support comes from the Brethren in Christ, we are the church family that surrounds her with prayer and encouragement as she works for Christ in Spain. We will be hearing from Melissa frequently.
St. Paul’s UCC is excited to grow our internet presence! You may have already received emails regarding upcoming events and links inviting you to join us on Council approved pages on Facebook.
Help us outreach through sharing the events and “like” us on Facebook.

Today and everyday, let’s use our hands and feet to share the love of Christ with others. School is nearing break, St. Paul’s Mission team is
going to work locally for many organizations. The outdoors will be
enjoyed through our church picnic on June 23, and summer begins!
What are ways that you can share the love of Jesus Christ through
your hands and feet this month?
Some ideas might include prayer for the mission team, those in need (like in Oklahoma), a random act of kindness, giving hugs, walking for a cause, or spending quality time with others. There are many more ways that our
hands and feet can share the love of Christ with others. 1 Corinthians 12

“Ponder and meditate on it day and night, making sure you practice everything written in it. Then
you’ll get where you’re going; then you’ll succeed. Haven’t I commanded you? Strength! Courage!
Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take.”
Joshua 1:1-9 (MSG)
All of us are going through some kind of transition. Maybe it’s a new school, new camp, new vacation spot, new adventure or a new job. From the old to the new is a transition that is more than earthly; it is spiritual. Joshua learns this when he becomes the leader after Moses’ death. God calls leaders who are ready and prepared and, like Joshua, YOU are a leader! God gave Joshua a mission and a vision of what may come. With this vision, a promise that “God will not fail him” and a request that Joshua ponder and meditate over Biblical writings with a request to live by them. This is a conditional promise, one that requires the leader to play his/her part. God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous and to not turn away from what he knows. Have confidence that God has prepared you! Whatever your future holds, whereever God is calling you to go, know that your God is always with you. Call upon him anytime. Pray, read and meditate on God’s word. You are the leader!
BE ENCOURAGED! BE TRUE TO YOURSELF! BE LOVED!

Melissa Shumaker, Interim Worship Director
Walking in a bit wet from a
prayer walk around town be-
fore a delicious lunch of
grilled cheese, salad, soup,
and éclair may not have been
what worship team members
had in mind for Saturday,
May 11, but perhaps neither
was a human knot! More
than just a day of the unex-
pected, “A Joyful Jam: Wor-
ship Arts Day” turned out to
be a delightful day of team
building.
Throughout the morning we
focused on cultivating our
hearts to be people of the
Word and people of prayer.
After enjoying some musical
worship together, Pam Herman shared a thought-provoking devotional about why we do what we do; a
theme that ran through the entire day. The Skit Guys reminded us that we are God’s Masterpiece and
that our daily connection time with God is important to allow Him to continue to shape and mold our lives.
Great encouragement came from affirming our gifts and sharing the gifts we saw in each other.
The afternoon provided many opportunities for laughter as we went back to the basics of singing and
spent time working on our primary skills. Signing our team covenant and speaking out our goals for the
summer brought excitement as we look forward to growing together and prayerfully walk ahead, led by
the Holy Spirit. Jamming to close, our hearts were uplifted to the King!
Contemporary Worship News
Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing
one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in
your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16

Contemporary Worship News Church Picnic - June 23
Get ready for some fun!
On Sunday, June 23, our Annual Church Picnic will be at Mummau Park. There will be one church service that day at 11:00 AM in the park followed by lunch at 12:00 and games. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall for salads and desserts. The church is
providing Hess’ pulled chicken barbeque sandwiches and drinks. There will be some hot dogs for the kids if they prefer (and maybe even some sauerkraut!). Sign-up soon so we know how many to plan for.
Called to Care
If you need transportation to a doctor or to church, please call
Bev Leibold, 627-3425 or the church office 665-2447. Please try to give
us 48 hours notice.
If you have any questions about the Called to Care ministry, please call Bev Leibold, Ministry Leader, 627-3425.
We're off to see the Wizard!
Plan to come along with your sisters at church to the Land of Oz. The theme of our women's retreat in January is The Wizard of Oz and is open to all women of the church young and old. The dates are January 17, 18 & 19, 2014. The place is Michaux Lodge at Hartman Center in Milroy. Rev.
Cindy Garis of Oasis Ministries in Camp Hill will take us on a journey down the "Yellow Brick Road". We will come to see how the phrases, "if I only had a brain", "if I only had a heart", "if I only had the courage" and "there's no place like home" fit into our spiritual lives today. There will be time to reflect, pray, share and just plain relax. If you are interested in coming along, please let me know. Space is limited.

WOMEN'S FELLOWSHIP
A big “THANK YOU” to John Degler for his planning, leader-ship and directing our “Night of Music” on May 15 in Hoffer Auditorium at Pleasant View where we have a number of our members in residence. We ALL had a good time sharing our God-given talents with the residents.
It was a pleasure to have Nan Gibble at our regular meeting. She shared with us a most difficult time in her life as she gave a review of her recent publication, Nan & Clete and Then There was One. She gave us much to think and pray about. It is inevitable that each of us has or will travel this same road and that the strength we need is there, if we will only ask God, family and friends to walk with us. Thank you, Nan!
Our next meeting will be our Covered Dish and Hymn Sing on June 25, 2013, at 6:00 PM at the home of Barbara Longenecker. This is always a special night of great food, fellowship and wonderful singing. Barbara is a gracious hostess and loves to share her beautiful home with us. Rain or shine, we are looking forward to your presence among those who love and serve the Lord with gladness and our favorite hymns.
St. Paul’s Congregation,
It is with great excitement I share that year “1” of my part time studies at Lancaster Theological Seminary is complete! The last paper has been submitted as I write this! I have already learned so much that has contributed to my calling here in children and youth ministry.
This summer the St. Paul’s Committee in Discernment that has been formed will meet to discuss and pray for my journey through seminary as a Master of Divinity student.
Our daughter Emily will be graduating this month, so I have chosen to take a break from classes for the summer and will begin year “2” in September for the fall term.
I am grateful for your prayers and words of encouragement as this process
continues!
Cheerfully in Christ,
Melissa Burkhart

Bell Ringers are needed for special bell choir to perform at the
Mt. Gretna Tabernacle mass ring on Saturday, August 3.
See Jim or Erica if interested.
Rehearsals will be on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM.
CHANCEL CHOIR NEWS
I would like to thank the members of the congregation for the wonderful comments about the musical offerings of the Chancel Choir during the past nine months. During that time the choir performed over forty anthems including seven first time selections and a brand new Christmas Cantata with orchestra and bells.
To continue these types of performances the choir must find new members to join them beginning in September. I ask that you give some prayerful consideration during the summer months to becoming a full or part-time choir member. It is enjoyable to listen to music but it is even more delightful to participate in taking printed notes and turning them into great musical sounds praising our Lord.

ON TO THE PRAYING FIELD . . . Praying for our church
Has your faith increased through prayer? Has prayer become a joyful everyday “talk with your heavenly Father”? He is always listening!!!!!
Realizing, though, it is not always easy to be joyful in the depths of sorrow while grieving or learning of a terminal illness. However, our Father is a GREAT listener. Sometimes we forget to pray for the “right” things. It is not our wants but “his”. Pray for HIM to guide you through your trials.
Don’t forget to be thankful for all of your Blessings each and every day. Don’t
forget to notice the small things as we walk or run through our days------sunrises,
sunsets, stars, rain, the smell of freshly mowed grass, flowers, people helping
people, smiles, “Thank You ”, a phone call, “I LOVE YOU”, encouraging words,
“HI” to a stranger, etc. The list is endless--------------------------------------.

The Nursery Attendant Schedule is on Google Docs!
There is a small group of volunteers who currently receive this document through email. They have access to add their name to sign-up at their convenience according to their schedules. When they edit the document, it is automatically saved for everyone on that list to view. Then, others know what dates/time slots are still available to volunteer their help with the little ones. So, if you could be a volunteer for the Nursery, please email or call Debbie Herr at [email protected] or 625-0380. You will be added to receive this schedule and knowledgeable of the current informa-tion. (If you do not have access to email, Debbie will add your name to the dates/times for you.) Thank you for considering to volunteer your time with the little ones of our church. This could encourage more young families to join our church!
