HAPPY NEW YEAR! MAKE IT A HEALTHY, SAFE AND PROSPEROUS ONE

By the time you receive this issue of the Currents , our annu-al Christmas party is history. It is a misfortune if you had to miss it; the party was a wonderful, joyful and inspiring suc-cess. Our thanks and platitudes go to our Administrative Officer Dennis Boylan and his “Santa’s” helpers, the Bay Vil-lage High School Choraleers and the Littlest Heroes, a very helpful organization who support kids with cancer and their families. Besides the children’s gifts we were able to give them a donation of $278 from the 50/50 raffle and individu-als’ cash donations.

On Tuesday 27 November, 2018, at the Perkins Pancake House in Avon, Ohio, a group of NCO members enjoyed brunch, conversation, and presentation of a 50 - Year Mem-bership Award plaque to past assistant- SEO Walter May, AP. We were pleased to have Walter’s wife Charlene in attend-ance as well. For many years in the late ‘70’s and ‘80’s, Wal-ter distributed the student books and collected the Basic Safe Boating class fees.

That’s when we had scheduled night-class sessions on Monday in Lakewood high school, Tuesday at Bay Village high school, Wednesday at the Rocky River Library and Thursday session ei-ther in North Olmstead or Fairview Park middle schools. Those were the good ‘ole days when we had multitude numbers of students at each location and no rental fees. Again, Walter, Thank You! for your past efforts and dedicated time. We now can proclaim that NCO has two 50-year memberships, the other being Lt/C Jim Christman, N. See photos this issue depicting presentation by D/Cdr Jim Holcepl, SN and yours truly.

NCOS&PS — CURRENTS

Here we are starting a brand new year! The best to all of you in this NEW YEAR.

VESSAL SAFETY: At of the end of the year Vessel Safety Examiners, Harry Barnes, Jim Holcepl,, Dave Kinkaid, Elliott Manke, Louise Manke, Jim Mason, Jon Paulus and Jack Salisbury did over 188 exams with 145 receiving the VSC decals. Good job to our examiners and thank you! If anyone is interested in training as a VSC examiner should contact Elliott at [email protected] or call him at 216 221-2899

ENVIRONMENT: Harry and Kay Barnes along with Elliott and Louise Manke went to help the Green Team in Bay Village cleanup the Porter Creek area near the lake front Metro Parks Huntington Beach. It was a cold and wet and dreary day but these four gallantly braved the elements in the clean-up on the creek that flows into Lake Erie.

THE MID-AMERICA BOAT SHOW is scheduled for January 17-21, 2019 at the IX Center. The Boat Show Co-Chairmen are P/R/C Dave Rickard, AP, Berea Squadron, and Cdr Elliott Manke, JN-IN. To man (or woman) the USPS booth, go online to the sign-up site: https:///www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0E4AAFAD2E5-2019

PUBLICITY NCO: Executive Committee authorized $350 to publish our upcoming classes (see Education article) in the Mid-America Boat Show vendors/advertisers newsletter available at the Boat Show. Thanks to Liz Glassell for the placement of our ad.

CO-OP CHARTING: the D/7 chair-persons, Tom and JoAnn Hancock of Stark County Squadron, are hopeful of getting our District the first and maybe only district to make Na-tional’s Honor Roll for both Geodetic and Nautical for 2018. They have asked NCO and Berea Squadrons to seek and find a geodetic landmark in Avon, photograph it, determine its GPS latitude/longitude and to record for 2018 for D/7. We have a Marine watermark recorded. If anyone is interested in ‘tagging along’ on this geodetic hunt and to learn about USPS Co-Op Charting program, con-tact Elliott ASAP.

In January we all know about really cold weather, gray skies, and survival boredom that will beset us. Perk up! There is the annual IX Boat Show 17-21 January, 2019. Why don’t you sign up (and gain hours for a Merit Mark*) for the USPS show booth, smell all the new fiberglass boats and promote our cause -- Safe Boating through educational ABC classes by ”America’s Boating Club”.

Coinciding with Martin Luther King Day we have a five-day schedule that means there are more slots to fill. The sign-up procedure is the same as previous years. We are using the Sign-Up Genius on the Internet. Go to:

OR SEARCH: go sign up D/7 boat show

Again we will feature the USPS Boating Skills Virtual Trainer at the booth; it REALLY draws the people in. There will be train-ing session in using the simulator the week-end before the show at a Berea Squadron member’s home in Berea. Call me for details. This means we need four volunteers for each of the slots for a given time period. One person is needed to run the simulator, one to gather and talk with people and do some paper work, and two workers are needed to man the table in the booth, i.e. to invite visitors to take our class schedules and inform them of “America’s Boating Club.”

*Congratulations to the 35 members each of whom earned a Merit Mark from the Chief Commander Gary Cheney. As a rule of thumb, the basic criteria is 15 hours of service to the Squad-ron. (It includes travel time!) See names of the Merit Mark vol-unteers listed in this issue. And “Thanks” to my secretary/wife, Louise, for tackling “the DB2000 system” to write-up and sub-mit the Merit Marks online to our monitor P/C/C Ted Smith. In turn, each received his/her Merit Mark online via e-mail.

house and meet up with friends and have a good time! Come March, we are a month or so away from being back on the water and enjoying time with our boating friends. But for some of us, March means so much more and that is of course Saint Patrick’s Day. I am working on booking a Satur-day afternoon at the Music Box Supper club featuring the Dublin City Ramblers where we can enjoy their story telling and music. More details will be coming out shortly. As we move into April, we will be looking for more outdoor activities and events to plan. Early discussion includes a squadron boating rendezvous to the islands, some sort of 4th of July celebration, Tall Ships visiting, and Labor Day event around the air show. And I end my article with this piece of history:

Under the Weather The sailor who had to stand watch on the bow taking all the

pounding and spray was said to be "under the weather."

During boating season, we always worried about wind out of the north and what that would do to the lake. Now we worry about wind out of the north and how much snow it will bring and where will it be the worst! We no longer drive around in the car with the windows open or the top down blasting Beach Boy’s or Jimmy Buffett music on the radio as we head up to the boat for a weekend on the water. But all is not lost! Now is the time to start thinking about those boating repairs and work that needs to be done before the season starts. Check the zincs to see if they need to be replaced. How about bottom painting, that’s something to look forward to. Its better to plan for it now so when the weather does break in a couple of months, we can start getting the work done and be ready for the boating season. Except when the north wind blows! But wait - there is more that you can do as you wait for the ice to melt off the lake and you can remove your shrink wrap! In the past we would have weekly Friday get togethers at local restaurants. We are revisiting this idea over the winter and looking for unique and different places we can all enjoy. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. This year we have several events and activities in the works that I am sure you will enjoy. One of the first events coming in January will be our annual Chili Cookoff. This year we are going to do it a bit differently, I am working on having a ce-lebrity judge come in to do the actual judging. This year we will be taking advantage of the beautiful John Christ Winery in Avon as our location for the event. Right now, the target date is set for January 26th and that will be confirmed short-ly. As many of you are aware, I really enjoy sending out emails and reminders so plan on seeing a few of them for this event. In February we will be having our Annual Membership meeting. I am working on a “NEW FLARE” as Membership meetings go! .. that is, having a special guest attend the meeting. It promises to be an interesting, informative and beneficial meeting. Its also a good excuse to get out of the

Winter came early and seems like it will stick around. The boats have been put to bed so Joe Poplstein and I have all our financial records reconciled. As of Dec 1, 2018 we showed an increase of $1,928 this fiscal year in our checking account and our Total Assets set at $23,450 which figure is up $2,716 from the previous year.

Since my last article NCOSPS has added six new members. Please join me in welcoming Tom Corrigan, Franklin Kutz, Elisabeth Corrigan, Michael and Karen Walsh and Jim Jewett. We also had eight members of Cleveland Squadron transfer to our squadron. I am working on a couple more new mem-bers as I write this article.

By the time you read this article the AP Class I have been taking will be completed; I hope I passed the final exam.

Remember to get your reservations into Dennis Boylan for the Chile Cook-off at Christ Winery. Anyone is welcome to submit a pot of chile for the friendly competition.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

At the time of this writing, can you believe that Christmas is just around the corner? I asked Santa for a new boat. Let’s see what shakes out with that one. Santa is usually pretty good to me but I don’t think a boat will fit in his sleigh.

We have two ABC (America’s Boating Class in basic boating) classes set up for Winter/Spring.

First, right after the Boat Show Dennis Boylan and Harry Barnes will run an eight-hour ABC at the Don Umerley Cen-ter, Recreation Center, in Rocky River. Class will start on Monday, January 28,2019 at 6:30 PM. This is for five weeks and ends up on February 25, 2019. The cost is $50 per per-son. The Umerley Center is at 21016 Hilliard Blvd., Rocky River OH 44116.

Second, Jim Hocephl will do an eight-hour ABC class for three Saturdays in April, 2019. This class will be held at Beaver Park South Marina, 6101 West Erie Ave., Lorain OH 44053, April 13th and 20th will be from 9:00AM to 4:00PM and April 27th will be from 9:00AM to about 1:00PM.

For all you “S” (Seamanship) grade folks, we are also doing a Piloting Class at Lakeside Yacht Club starting on Thursday, January 24, 2019. Thanks to Dave Kinkaid we have a free classroom. Dave and I will be the instructors.

Lakeside Yacht Club is at 4851, North Marginal Rd. Cleve-land OH 44114. Class will start at 6:000PM.

Boating Adventures

Hi, my name is Jim Jewett and I am possibly the newest member of the NCOSPS. I do not currently own a boat. My boating experience is from the 1970, 1980 and 1990's when I owned two different outboard run aboats in succession. A 1959 17' Lyman (pictured below) I bought in 1977 and a generic 1971 Seastar fiberglass I bought around 1990. I was a small lake/reservoir-close to Erie's south shore-river kind of boater around Ohio, Michigan and Canada.

I first enjoyed boating thanks to my uncle Clifford who's family had a houseboat in Kittaning, Pa. on the Allegheny River. Many fond memories from when I was a young teenager hanging out with

my cousin Rick and later weekend trips with my wife Mary Ellen and our two children. My uncle Clifford even had a Lyman to tow along for excursions and water skiing.

My best boating memories though were week long trips to the French River Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. Mary Ellen & I took our first trip in 1987 with our neighbor friends. They had access to a cabin on Hammerhead Bay. A ten hour drive to 200 miles north of Toronto and a 15 mile boat ride upstream & you were at the cabin

(See the map to the left). You are out there in the wilderness! This trip and several to follow had us trailering the '59 Lyman with its '59, 50 HP outboard motor. The 17' Lyman was the minimal size and had the minimal power needed to navigate

the river. The last landmark upstream before turning left into Hammerhead Bay were the Crooked Rapids.

Here (Picture on the right) is looking upstream at the upper rapids from the mid point of the lower and upper rapids (taken on a dry season low water level day). Hammerhead bay is to the left out of sight. My last trip through these rapids was in the Lyman to open 'camp' for the season. Four of us buddies, loaded with a week's worth of sup-plies barely made it up stream at this point, the throttle wide open. I only knew we were moving by looking at the rocks on both sides of the rapids. Soon I would buy the 71 Seastar with a 100 HP Johnson outboard. It became a perfect French River boat.

Here is an account of Hammerhead bay from this blogspot in 1979: http://missinaibi-yuri.blogspot.com/2007/02/french-river-ontario-1979.html Worth reading the entire blog if this kind of boating has captured you imagination. The granite walls of Hammerhead Bay shown on the left.

"Lulled into complacency by the gentle caress of the river we found that we had missed our channel and had taken an unintentional tour down the long arm of ‘Hammerhead Bay’. The sun was finally overtaken by the clouds permitting the mists to waft in. Each spoken word and stroke of the paddle gently reverberated against the granite walls of the inlet. This canyon was a blind alley which termi-nated after a few miles marked only by a weathered cabin tucked away amongst the trees. No cur-

rent flowed here. This alone should have provided the clue to our dead end. The mist, now a drizzle began to wash the sweat from our brows as we traced our way back. Looking up, I resumed my gaze at the beautiful granite walls and towering pines of these backwoods. Backwoods, - another melody wove its way into my brain. This was a song in tribute to one of my favorite folk artists, Gordon Lightfoot. Gord and his music is the embodiment of the Canadian wilderness experience. The tune was simply entitled ‘Lightfoot’ and the line that played out in my head was... “He is an artist He is an artist He is an artist painting Sistine masterpieces of pine and fur and backwoods Still echoes long ago the winter night of black July and then the outcome of an early Cleveland rainfall” (3) Ah Gord! We should have gone left but were mislead by the larger body of water to our right. Running through some minor rapids (the Crooked Rapids) we marveled at the whirlpools formed by the various merging currents that chased each other. The current convinced us that we were on track once more." Here is the view for a downstream boater looking into the rapids vs. the wider bay to the right.

(Not my actual boat. It was easier to get a picture off the internet than to look through old slides)

It’s the Holiday season… let the celebrations begin.

Seventeen Riverbelles gathered together to celebrate the season with a lovely dinner at the Rosewood Grille in Strongsville. We enjoyed a fun gift exchange with each other with the reading of ‘Twas the night before Christmas’, but with a bit of a Right/Left twist, it was truly a lot of fun!

For our charity this year we have chosen an individual from Malachi House and have provided wish list items for their holiday enjoyment. Many thanks to Kate Mott for being our charity chairperson for this event. Special thanks to Kay’s boss, Martin Chambers, D.D.S.for donating toothpaste and toothbrushes to our charity.

One thing I am so thankful for this holiday season are the special memories that this wonderful group of women con-tinue to have together.

From our homes to yours, the Riverbelles would like to wish you Happy Holidays and a Happy and Healthy New Year!!
