TELL ME ABOUT REV. MACFARLANE
The Rev. Macfarlane was ordained by the Metro Boston Association of the Massachusetts Confer-ence of the UCC in 1971. He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy & Religion from Bos-ton University and his Master of Divinity degree from Andover Newton Theological School. In addition, he has completed various workshops and courses for Interim Ministry including a Certification of Intentional Interim Ministry.
Rev. Macfarlane has forty years of experience as pastor of several UCC churches. After retirement he has been an Intentional Interim pastor of six different churches. He comes to us after serving as an Intentional Interim with a church in New Hampshire.
Rev. Macfarlane and his wife Diana, a retired elementary teacher, have two grown sons.
EXACTLY WHAT IS AN INTENTIONAL INTERIM MINISTER?
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?
Interim ministry is the ministry provided to a local church during a pastoral vacancy. The duration of interim ministry is, by definition, a limited one, limited by a clearly defined agreement among all the involved parties: the Intentional Interim Minister, the local congregation, and the Conference/Association staff person. It is understood that all pastoral/professional relationships with the interim minister will terminate when the settled ministry begins. The Intentional Interim Minister is never a candidate to become the Settled Minister.
The term “Intentional Interim Minister” means a transition ministry specialist who provides for the on-going worship life of the congregation, offers basic pastoral care and administrative leadership, and helps guide a church through the unique complexities, challenges and opportunities inherent in an “in-between time.” There is no set time period for an Interim Ministry but we are told to expect many months; perhaps a year or more.
The Intentional Interim understands this ministry to be her/his vocation; in addition to the customary education and experience expected of a local church pastor, the Intentional Interim also will have completed coursework and has attended workshops offered through a national, professional organiza-tion such as the Interim Ministry Network. In the case of Rev. Macfarlane, he has certification as an Intentional Interim Minister and attends workshops in the field.

For all members of St. John’s, I would like to review our musical groups that we have available for your participation. It is my hope that we could pick up some new members to be a part of some of these groups without “arm twisting”!!!!
St. John’s Senior Choir will begin practice on September 8 and continue practice on Thursday evenings at 7:30. This group will sing an anthem each Sunday morning and please don’t think that you cannot miss a Sunday now and then. Many of our members do travel and take time off. We understand! I would really like to have some younger folks, who like to sing, come and join us.
Belltone Handbell Choir will begin practice on September 8 and continue practice on Thursdays at 4 PM. This group began in 2011 and plays 3 octaves of handbells and hand chimes. We plays mostly level 1 music and play in church several times each year. This group would be for begin-ners and people with limited ringing expertise.
The Bells of St. John’s will begin practice on September 8 and continue practice on Thursdays at 6 PM. This group began ringing together in 1999 and plays level 2 and 3 music. We play 5 octaves of Handbells and 5 octaves of hand chimes. We play in church several times each year and play outside the church at nursing homes and other events.
The Men of St. John’s is a male singing group that will sing several times each year. This group is for any men who would like to sing on occasion, but do not wish to be in the senior choir.
Flute Choir is for those individuals who play flute and we play in church several times a year or on special occasions. Gary and Gloria Crum, Music Directors
Praise Team plays each Sunday in church and prac-tices on Tuesday evenings. With the Blended Ser-vices underway and continuing into the foreseeable future, I have gotten many questions about the fu-ture of the Praise Team. Are we staying or are we going? The simple answer is that we aren’t going anywhere. The truth of the matter is that we love the extra hour of sleep and the occasional Sunday off to rest and recoup!
In all seriousness, Gary and Gloria Crum, Tim Long and the substitute pastors we have had this summer have all been an absolute blessing to work with. Things are smooth and consistently enjoyable. We thank them for all that they do for our church.
Thank you all for your support, kindness and enthusi-asm toward us no matter where we worship. See you Sunday! Chrissy Myers, Praise Team Leader

Martin (Marty) Kelly Custodian
Marty’s first experience as a custodian was in 1999 at a small custodial business in Greenvillage. He enjoys helping others and keeping people safe. He has an awe-some wife, Debbie, of 16 1/2 years with 3 boys (Dylan, Brendan, Ralphie) and that gets almost all of his attention. Talking with strangers and evangelism is his passion. He prays that he is a bless-ing to his co-workers and members of this Jesus loving Church. His position as custodian/maintenance is a true blessing that was an an-swered prayer!

Ladies Bible Study
Ladies Bible Study will resume Sept 6 at 6PM in the Conference Room. We will be using Pricilla Shirer's study "Gideon, Your Weakness, God's Strength." Have you ever felt insufficient? Could it be that your weaknesses are the keys that unlock God's strength? Through a look at the life of Gideon, you can discover that instead of ignoring, neglecting or trying to escape your weaknesses, you can see them as gifts given specifically and strategically by God to unlock the door of God's strength. All ladies are welcome. Workbooks for the study are available at Lifeway. Facilitated by: Nancy Gaal

Adult Sunday School Class Beginning September 11th Ernie Welch’s Adult Sunday School class, meeting in Room 7, will begin the year analyzing and discussing New Testament scriptures by studying, on alternating weeks, "The Most Popular Verses" and "The Most Troublesome Verses". All are welcome to partici-pate. Each lesson stands alone with no “homework” or prior preparation. The second half of the year will focus on “Revelation".
Upper Room Discussion On Sunday, SEPTEMBER 11th at 9am am we
will again have the opportunity to join with folks around the world who use the Upper Room as a tool to grow as Christians. Connie Strunk leads this lively group in discussing
the readings from the week. We laugh, we discuss, we ponder, we pray and we do, indeed, grow as Christians.
Sunday school starts September 11, 2016 at 9:00am. This Fall for Sunday School we plan to utilize a large group/small group curriculum just like our VBS which is always a success. We are excited to see the children & parents September 11th at 9:00am in Fellow-ship Hall. URGENCY: PLEASE CONSIDER joining the team as a teacher on a rotation schedule plus needing substitute helpers to make our Sunday School the best it can be. We hope in your heart you will please contact any of the above teachers to talk about our needs in being an integrate part of St. John's Sunday School.

Today’s world needs more kindness—an unex-pected helping hand, a smile to illuminate the darkness, a caring word to lighten the load. Since its inception in the 1930s the Homewood Auxilia-ry has brought an extra helping of kindness and caring to the health care centers on the Home-wood campuses.
Many Auxiliary members serve as volunteers or plan and participate in fund-raising events: while others join simply for the satisfaction of knowing their membership is just one small act of kind-ness
On October 23 and October 30 before and after church Nancy and John Gaal will be renewing members for the coming year and recruiting new members. Please join to add your name and support to the thousands who serve Homewood’s residents.
Your membership is an act of kindness that will never be forgotten.
