HICKORY FURNITURE MART ~ A HISTORY OF TRANSITION

1958

Mull’s Restaurant becomes a destination for furniture wholesale dealers and buyers traveling through Hickory on business. Since many of the furniture buyers stay at the motel, local furniture manufacturers establish this as a central meeting point to showcase their current product lines to potential buyers. They use the restaurant’s basement to display more product, leading to the industry’s first wholesale exhibition, which takes place in the basement of Mull’s Restaurant.

1947

The Mull family opens Hickory Drive-In Grill, which includes a hot dog stand for patrons on the east side of the site of what is now known as Hickory Furniture Mart.

1952

The hot dog stand becomes so popular with movie goers that this sparks the idea of converting it into a full scale restaurant and Mull’s Restaurant opens.

2014

The Lail family redevelops the original Mull’s Motel site into a new mixed-use retail development known as Fairbrook Ridge. The land continues to expand with future growth from a space that started out and evolved from a simple hot dog stand inside of a drive-in movie theater. HFM

1960

Leroy Lail encourages a group of furniture manufacturers to meet twice a year to display their products to furniture buyers inside the building and Hickory Furniture Mart originates from the creative vision of Leroy Lail and Lynn (Mull) Lail.

1996-1998

Hickory Furniture Mart completes two major expansions on the south side of the building to add more showroom space.

1992

The Mull family decides to close Mull’s Motel & Restaurant and the Hickory Drive-In Grill and utilize this land to expand Hickory Furniture Mart even more. The Lail family completes another major expansion on the SE side of the building and Mull’s Motel becomes a Holiday Inn Express.

1962-1980

The Markets at Hickory Furniture Mart continue to gain popularity and grow in attendance. Multiple expansions take place to display more product by more manufacturers.

2009

The North entrance is transformed through a lobby renovation project.

1985

The Lail family decides to convert their bi-annual wholesale furniture exhibition space into a year-round retail furniture destination. Visitors from around the world now have access to the most diverse furniture selections under one roof and receive exclusive industry discounts comparable to wholesale pricing that have never been offered to the public before.

1957

Due to its prime location and the need for overnight accommodations in the area, the Mull family decides to add a motel onsite. Mull’s Restaurant now becomes Mull’s Motel & Restaurant.

Have you ever wondered why your closet and your home are always full of the same colors? Most people do not realize that they naturally gravitate towards colors that speak to them in some way or another and reflect their true personalities. We surround ourselves with the colors that have meaning to us and give us comfort. It is always fun to learn a little more about your individual personality based on the colors you choose.

Let’s start with RED. Red is the most powerful color of them all. Red is the color of life … the color of blood … the color of heat … the color of fire. Red is the color of the strong “Red Bird” that stands out proudly against the cold winter. So when we see red

in nature, we immediately associate it with power (sometimes this is good and other times it tends to be scary).

When we translate this into human form it becomes a CEO selecting a red tie to show power at his important meeting (remember Regan red?), we use it in love and intimacy to show our strong passion for one another (think of Valentine’s Day and lingerie), we demand immediate attention by using red in stop lights and stop signs. If you are a red person my dear, then you are a force to be reckoned with!

When we look at the color BLUE in nature, we see blue as forever and always. We see blue in the horizon. It is where the sky meets the water to create a seamless line, which becomes infinity. The sky has no beginning and it has no end — it is just there, never changing and timeless. Blue is truly special in nature because we see very few blue foods and

very few blue flowers, so those that we do see are very important.

Blue is stable, stoic and permanent. Think of safe money as in blue-chip stock … best friends that are true blue …many military and police uniforms are blue and are there 24/7 to keep us safe. If either you or your best friend is a blue person, then you are extremely focused, serious and a loyal friend through thick and thin.

Now we move along to YELLOW. Nature shows us yellow in quick, showy bursts of color, like a flash in the pan! The first flowers to bloom after the cold, dark winter are daffodils and forsythia … loud, bold statements of yellow. The bright light of the day — yellow. A bee or lighting bug — yellow. Yellow is the most temporary color. Most things that are yellow make a big bright display and then … poof! they are

gone, just as quickly as they came. Since yellow is also the most reflective color, we usually feel more comfortable with smaller doses of yellow (as an accent piece) … that favorite black dress with that vibrant bright yellow scarf, or dazzling yellow diamond earrings.

Yellow is the color of baby gifts if the gender is unknown and the signage on the highway that begs to be seen first. If your best friend is a yellow person, enjoy them while they are there because it could be a strong, showy, but quick friendship!

Jumping straight to GREEN. Green is all about Mother Nature. When we look out and see the first green leaves start to unroll in the spring, we know that new life is on its way. Green is our safe and nurturing color — it is all around us and it soothes our soul. Think about walking in the middle of NYC, full of concrete and structures, then strolling into Central Park — it allows us to just take a deep

breath and decompress a little. We relax in a meadow with friends on a picnic or camping in the woods with our family. Green is our happy place.

When we bring green into our personal space, we bring nature right back inside.

The great debate of Contemporary vs. Modern has gone on for many years. Understanding the unique characteristics that each category can bring to an interior is paramount when designing your space. Comparatively speaking, one can be modern in style but not necessarily contemporary and vice versa. As contemporary denotes the styles that are current today; modern denotes the timeless designs of an era gone by. Yet with today’s eclectic lifestyles, one can encompass elements of both for a distinctive look and feel to withstand the test of time.

STYLE COMPARISONContemporary is a style of furniture that is being produced right now. It refers to the latest styles and designs of the 21st Century. It isn’t tied down to one specific style; it borrows bits and pieces from a variety of styles and eras. Contemporary can only exist in the here and now because ten years ago some of the materials used would not have been available to us. Yesterday’s contemporary is today’s vintage and tomorrow’s contemporary is still unknown. Contemporary rooms are always evolving to reflect the changing tastes and the shifting

lives of the people living in the space, therefore contemporary homes are always a work in progress.

Modern is a style of furniture that describes a static era-specific design that breaks away from the traditional styles of the pre-Industrial Revolution. It is connected to the age of machination and is typically referred to as the time period between 1920-1950 or anything

from the 20th Century. It is simple and functional.

The distinction between the two styles is often confusing because many of the elements in modern design, such as mid-Century or retro stylings are also popular right now in contemporary design; therefore modern designs are an integral part of today’s contemporary designs.

FURNITURE COMPARISONBoth favor simple, uncluttered space with smooth clean lines and artistic expression. Neither prefer ornate or overly decorative pieces or intricate carvings. Both styles gravitate towards furniture raised off the ground with exposed legs (definitely no sofa skirts used) and both integrate reflective surfaces made of mixed metals and glass.

Contemporary furniture lines are a bit more asymmetrical to draw attention to their overall composition. Textures tend to be smooth and showcase more curves. Unique statement pieces are strategically positioned to take center stage. Cotemporary pieces focus on comfort and creatively blend well with one another.

Modern furniture incorporates many of the same stylistic similarities, such as materials used, emphasis on lines and minimalism (using the least to achieve the most); however modern furniture also incorporates a great deal of molded plastics and plywoods. Modern furniture places its attention on the most precise details.

COLOR COMPARISONModern colors are predominantly neutral and follow a strict style format, using one color or monochromatic theme throughout the room, adding only hints of one or two other colors.

Contemporary colors vary and swing from one extreme to the other, often using several different pops of bold and vibrant colors throughout the home. Funky shapes and patterns are often dispersed throughout contemporary interiors but are rarely used in modern ones.

MADE IN AMERICA

LAZAR INDUSTRIES“‘Made in America’ is not just an expression but rather a commitment to home grown talent, producing stylish high-value products using good old fashioned ingenuity, right here in North Carolina.

~Robert Luce, President

MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS“A day doesn’t go by that we – and our workforce and our customers – don’t benefit from our earth-friendly upholstery being Made in America. The skilled artisans at our state-of-the-art factory in the town of Taylorsville, North Carolina, are the heart and soul of our company. Crafting our upholstery here lets Bob and me personally work with them to achieve outstanding comfort in our furnishings as well as comfort and safety for our team by making smart choices in materials, manufacturing methods, and work environment.

Making our upholstery here also means more jobs for the US economy. And it lets us offer career benefits designed to make people’s lives – and their families’ lives – better and easier, such as our onsite, not-for-profit, education-based daycare center for the children of employees and members of our community. Also key: It has given us the opportunity to continually take our environmental responsibility to new levels, from making our cushions free of fire-retardant chemicals to sourcing our wood frames from local domestic partners to recycling, upcycling, and saving energy through new technologies.

We’ve upheld this commitment since we started – not since it became fashionable. And in recent years we’ve been helped in this by the Sustainable Furnishings Council, of which we’re a founding member and I’m on the board.

We just finished celebrating our 25th year in business, and we’re developing big plans for the next 25 – all of which include continuing to manufacture our upholstery in the USA.”

What is trending in fabrics this year?“Combining different fabrics with different styles and textures is something that is really popular this year. Traditional fabrics and prints mixed with antique and modern pieces create very unique statements throughout your home.

Adding a little bit of glitz and glamour to your bedding, pillows and window treatments, just by embellishing them with some of your favorite beads, crystals or sequins is a fun way to reveal your sense of sophistication and style.

Grain sack fabric that is antique and re-used for furniture and upholstery projects is making a comeback too. This fabric is durable and tends to have a ‘hipster,’ shabby chic and rustic feel all at the same time.”

What are some of the most popular colors you’re seeing?“Stepping back into time with a resurgence of retro colors is another big trend in fabrics this year. Beloved colors of the 1960’s and 1970’s, such as olive green, orange and ochre yellow are being given new life as well as some of their warmer toned counterparts including rust, dusty mint and eggplant.

Pastels of the 80’s are also making their way back into fabrics, especially in pale pinks, soft oranges and soothing blues and greens.”

Are there any particular patterns that you see emerging in our fashion and furniture? “Animal prints are not going away anytime soon. People just love them and they continue to incorporate them into fabrics of all shapes and sizes in so many fun and sassy ways.

Chevron patterns are still popular in bold colors such as turquoise and sunshine yellow.

Some trends tend to be more regionally focused than others, such as the use of plaids and patchwork in fabrics. While most of the country has scaled back on these two patterns, they are still considered timeless classics in the South and are constantly being transformed by using them in updated colors and configurations.

This year we are seeing more gingham being used in both fashion and furniture. Gingham is a cotton fabric marked with a pattern of colored squares — think about your mother or grandmother’s old red and white checked cotton tablecloth. You’ll see this popping up in various colors with different sized squares being used. Fabric designers definitely enjoy giving the traditional gingham a burst of modern energy this year.

And natural elements are very big in home décor this year and watercolors are one of the newest trends in fabrics. When you mix these two themes

together, it creates a soft accent to any room. A cotton or linen fabric with watercolor florals or coral patterns generates a calming and serene environment for any space.”

Homeowners are increasingly investing more time and money into their indoor and outdoor lighting needs, especially the Baby Boomers who are now retiring later in their lives and need more light throughout their home environment to accomplish all of their daily tasks and activities.

A good overall lighting plan should take into consideration what you are trying to accomplish in each room; activities, mood, focal points, highlights, etc. Lighting typically serves four main purposes: ambient lighting, task lighting, accent lighting and decorative lighting.

Ambient Lighting is a central source of lighting that provides an overall non-specific illumination in a room. It allows you to perform daily tasks such as cleaning, dressing and daily maneuvering around your home. Larger ceiling or wall mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights are all perfect for ambient lighting.

Task Lighting is needed for more specific activities such as reading a book, doing homework, preparing food or even grooming. It provides a higher level of directed light in a dedicated area. Floor and desk lamps, pendant lights, under cabinet lighting, recessed and track lighting are all great choices for this type of lighting.

Accent Lighting is most often used to highlight, add drama or flair to a particular item being displayed such as that unique piece of artwork, an architectural feature within a room, or a one of a kind antique or collectible. It is recommended that your accent lighting provide three times as much light on your focal point as the general lighting surrounding it. Track, recessed or special wall mounted fixtures typically work best for accenting that special masterpiece to your guests.

Decorative Lighting is often added to enhance the décor of your current space and to create a more intimate setting. LED flameless candles and decorative chandeliers are two great options for you to consider when choosing your decorative lighting.

There are several industry lighting trends that are quickly making their way into homes this year.

LED Lighting: Many of you have already made the switch to LED lighting throughout your home. This lighting is practical and affordable and extremely energy efficient after your initial investment has been made. Each year more versatile and functional options are becoming available in LED lighting.

Pendant Lighting: Singular or multi-light pendant options are popping up everywhere, along with bowl and drum pendants. Mini pendants are available with a wide range of colored glass or metal shades. From contemporary to traditional to vintage inspired pieces, pendant lighting will be even more popular this year.

Chandeliers: Traditional elegant large scale chandeliers are not the only options available anymore. Many have expressed an interest in smaller more affordable “mini chandelier” options for tight spaces such as smaller homes, lofts, apartments, condos and dorms. And this year you will find chandeliers in every room, not just formal dining rooms and foyers; kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, closets and even in your outdoor living spaces. A good rule of thumb when determining what size chandelier is needed is to take the length and width of a room and then add those two numbers together to determine the approximate diameter of the chandelier. It is very important to choose the correct size. A tiny chandelier may be lost in the middle of a large room. It is also not a good idea to have a chandelier that is too large for a space as it will take away from the overall design.

Lighting Underneath Cabinets: Lighting placed underneath your cabinets provides focused lighting for activities and tasks taking place on your countertops. Under cabinet lights are available in fluorescent and LED versions. Dimmers may be used in conjunction with this type of lighting to add depth and drama, all while saving energy.

Copper Colored Light Fixtures: Warm metals remain extremely popular and copper has become the metal of choice this year. From pendant copper light fixtures to copper infused sconces to table and floor lamps, new designs are being introduced daily so this request will be around for a long time.

Hidden Landscape Lighting: LED landscape lights are less conspicuous and much more efficient than their halogen and incandescent predecessors. And, they offer greater durability and reliability. There are versions of path and walkway lights that can be integrated into landscaping features such as retaining walls, hand rails and stairways in such a way that they are virtually invisible until they are turned on. Another new item is the programmable multi-circuit outdoor lighting controller which offers built-in dimming and remote control access.

Our outdoor living spaces are definitely starting to mimic our interiors more and more, in style, function, and personality. In many homes, indoor living spaces are decreasing while outdoor spaces are actually increasing as we feel the need to be part of our natural surroundings and find ourselves spending more time outdoors, whether it be by ourselves or entertaining family and friends.

Be on the lookout for these popular outdoor trends this year. Durable, High Quality Furniture ~ Homeowners are investing in higher quality outdoor furniture that is weathered and fully protected and will last for a lifetime versus purchasing lower quality products that need to be replaced every 3-4 years.

Layers of Lighting ~ We have definitely seen an increase in outdoor lighting requests for ambience, security and safety, including overhead chandeliers, table top lamps, candle holders with LED flameless candles and copper and warm metal fixtures with aged finishes.

Sophisticated Appliances and Technology ~ In this 24/7 world, outdoor USB ports and docking stations for smart devices have become a necessity for most. State of the art audio visual, media centers, security systems, mounted patio heaters and sophisticated outdoor kitchens with the same restaurant quality appliances that are available indoors are also commonly requested. Some of the

hottest outdoor items this year are custom pizza ovens, infra-red burners added to existing outdoor grills for searing steaks and drop down power burners used for crab and crawfish boils and outdoor entertaining. Bolder Colors ~ Bolder colors are being woven into outdoor furniture this year and not only in accent pieces such as outdoor rugs and throw pillows. Outdoor granite kitchen countertops are not just basic black anymore, they are trending more towards earthy browns, tans, golds, and a mixed combination of colors. Back splashes tend to use bolder colors and many are incorporating artistic mosaic tile designs or using accent tiles in metal or glass. Gardening pots and planters, which were once predominately available only in orange Terra Cotta clay, are popping up in an array of vibrant and pastel colors. Blue hues are very popular this year and range from light mineral blue to dark navy blue, in addition to oranges, plums, golds and reds of various shades. The PANTONE color of the year is Marsala, which also represents a much bolder color statement than in years past.

Organic & Geometric Shapes and Patterns ~ Less defined shapes and patterns are gaining popularity in our outdoor settings. We’re seeing a movement towards less crisp and rigid lines and more fluid, softer, and rounded edges in our overall shapes and patterns in furniture fabrics, lighting, accessories and landscaping.

Container Gardens ~ Portable container gardens add foliage and warmth to smaller spaces, both indoors and outdoors. Vertical wall planters and modular planting products make it flexible and easy to move these accent pieces around as needed.

Industrial Design ~ The use of concrete, stone, reclaimed wood and rustic materials continues to be very popular again this year throughout our outdoor environments.

Indoor/Outdoor Connectivity ~ Homeowners are remodeling their interiors and replacing walls with large French doors for easy access between their indoor and outdoor living spaces. Large picture windows and floor to ceiling glass walls are being installed to bring more natural sunlight indoors and connect more to our outdoor environments.

Natural Landscapes ~ You will notice that natural and manmade stones continue to be integrated into outdoor kitchen cabinetry, islands, walls and in focal areas like column supports and backsplashes.

What is your number one tip to share with people who are looking for a new Oriental rug?“When you start the process of shopping for a quality Oriental rug for your home or business, it is very important to bring the following items with you in order to ensure you will be happy with your purchase; floor plans, room dimensions, pictures of your room, fabric samples, paint swatches, flooring type and color of flooring used in your home.”

How should you care for your rug once you bring it home?“Regular vacuuming will keep dirt from being ground into the rug’s fibers. I recommend professionally cleaning your rug every 3-5 years. This will extend its life considerably. Be sure not to vacuum the fringe on your rug as the beater bar could damage it. Any spills should be wiped up immediately with a mixture of mild soap and water. If your rug is displayed in a high traffic area, rotate it every 6 months in order to help it wear more evenly.”

Are rug pads really needed?“Yes, I personally believe that it is very important to use a rug pad underneath all of your rugs. A rug pad’s main function is to prevent your rug from moving. They are also used to protect the backside of your rug and to protect your flooring. Make sure you inform your rug expert if you plan to display your rug on top of a carpeted area, over hardwood floors, tile, or linoleum since different pads are needed depending on the structure of the surface underneath.”

How do I judge the quality of a rug?“Asking your rug expert about the knot count or the number of knots per square inch is the most common benchmark for establishing a quality piece. Just remember that a rug’s design also plays a significant part in determining overall knot count. For example, a rug with a large geometric design may only require 100 knots per square inch while an intricate animal or floral pattern may require 300 knots per square inch or even more. You may also look at the rug’s weave and must take into account the quality of the materials used in making the rug. The color fastness and types of dyes used will also provide a natural indication of the rug’s quality.”

Where are the majority of high-quality Oriental rugs made?“The majority of your high-quality hand-knotted Persian rugs are made in Iran. Many of the larger sized rugs may take up to two years to produce. The Iranian craftsmen who create these rugs generally pass down the trade

through their family lineages. A lot of patience is required to learn the skills needed to work the looms, create new and interesting patterns, tie quality knots, recognize and repair any mistakes made along the way and then finish the rug to complete perfection. The artists and weavers must initially design the pattern and then estimate every color and correct amount of material that will be needed to complete the rug. If they do not calculate this information correctly in the beginning, they run the risk of not finding the same color of dyed wool to match if they run out of materials in the middle of their work, which often times may be several months or years later. Over 20 craftsmen may be involved in the creation of just one hand-knotted rug. Turkey, India, Pakistan and China are also well-known for making high-quality fine oriental rugs.”

Every hand-knotted rug has a unique story to tell. By selecting one, you are bringing that story home with you. For more information on fine Oriental rugs, please stop by our reputable and trusted fine rug gallery, located inside Hickory Furniture Mart. HFM

ANGIE ALLEN AND ELIZABETH BURNS“As designers, we are often asked what’s ‘in’ and what’s ‘out’ each year when it comes to overall furniture designs, fabrics and colors. This year, we have noticed that the following trends are definitely ‘in:’ antique brass accessories and fixtures, lighter colored flooring, downsizing and simplifying spaces (less is more), printed wallpaper and fabrics used as accents, luxurious linens, custom bedding and unique artwork. The color blue is still extremely popular in paints, fabrics and accessories.

Some of the trends that are transitioning ‘out’ this year are: mirrored furniture, inspirational phrases, the combination of red and gold, the Ikat design in fabrics, the Ombre’ look and the amount of antlers being used in lighting and accessories. Keep in mind that it is always best to go with what works for your lifestyle. Step outside the box to reflect your own personality and style. Just remember, everything does not have to be the same color or be from the same collection. Have fun with it and mix and match! Let Anelan Designs, located inside Hickory Park Furniture Galleries, take you to the next level for all of your home décor needs.”

JANET BRADSHAW “The outlets inside Hickory Furniture Mart offer a great opportunity for customers to purchase high-end goods at significant savings. The best way to approach shopping at an outlet is to arrive prepared with your room measurements, have a general idea of what you are looking for, then let the items on display guide your way. Selecting a piece of furniture or art that you really love is the first step that will then lead you to the next, and soon you will find yourself completing your entire project with items that complement one another. Select a color or texture to carry your look throughout each room. Do not be afraid to mix wood finishes, patterns and accessories. Your home should include all things that you absolutely love to be surrounded by.”

SCOTT SMART “We are seeing stylish and dramatic floral designs displayed in almost every room of the home. For those who possess a desire for color without a huge commitment, permanent botanicals are ideal. Use them to accent or give height to any corner or add a pop of color to a neutral space. Floral designs are often used as visual fillers for areas that are hard to accentuate. Remember, these statement pieces may be moved easily from one room to another and create an incredible impact wherever they go. From contemporary to traditional designs, florals have served interiors exquisitely for centuries.”

What is the difference between hardwoods and softwoods?“Hardwoods are deciduous, meaning leaf bearing/flowering trees, such as teak, walnut, oak, maple, mahogany, cherry and birch. Hardwoods are often used in the highest quality of furniture production, and are also a bit more expensive because the wood is scarcer and considered a premium.

Softwoods are coniferous, meaning cone-bearing with needlelike/scalelike foliage such as pine, fir, redwood and cedar. They are also used in high-quality furniture production, but this wood is more readily available. Because of its overall texture, it is also a bit more prone to scratches and dents so you may want to consider choosing a stronger protective coating or finish on it.”

What is the best way to care for high-quality solid wood furniture?“Blot up all spills immediately. We suggest simply using a slightly damp cloth to wipe down your furniture and then go over it again with a soft dry cloth to make sure it is completely dry. It is not necessary to use special waxes or conditioners on it, but if you do, just make sure you do not use a silicone based polish. Many furniture stores carry Guardsman furniture polish, which is highly recommended for fine wood finishes.

Every effort should be made to keep your wood furniture out of direct sunlight and heat sources such as radiators, vents or wood stoves. These conditions will cause the wood to dry out and ultimately split. Humidity between 35-45 percent guards against shrinking, cracking or expansion. Extreme temperatures and humidity will ruin wood. Avoid placing furniture in front of or underneath windows and do not store in damp areas. Rotate your accessories every so often on your wooden furniture and lift items rather than dragging them across your furniture surface.”

What type of finish is best for high-quality woods?“Finishes range from high-gloss to low-gloss in varying qualities. A high-quality finish is satiny smooth and free of any rough spots, dust specks or bubbles. The best way to check the smoothness of a good finish is to place a nylon over your hand and run it all over the finish.

If the nylon catches or snags, it has not been sanded or finished properly. Look for depth and richness in the finish, which comes from several light coats of finish with sanding between each coat. The edges and ends of the piece of wood should be coated with the top finish as well as any filled cracks or holes in the wood. And, a good finish should be free of any finger marks. Many higher quality pieces of furniture are also finished on the back and underside to reduce the chances of swelling or shrinking.

We personally apply conversion varnish as a top coat to each piece of our Amish furniture after it has been stained. This is a clear film finish that is considered “reactive.” This product has a

chemical reaction when mixed for use. It cures from the bottom up and the solvent must work its way out of the film so the finish molecules are able to cross-link. Film finishes build up on the surface of the wood and each layer is built upon the next layer, which keeps the wood separated from all outside elements such as water, water vapor and everyday use. It provides superior moisture resistance. It is a very high-quality coating that will provide extreme durability and last the life of your furniture.

Are there any recent trends that you can tell us about?“Mixing metals such as gold, silver and copper along with different types of wood is a pretty big trend right now. Consumers are looking for items that are authentically reclaimed, not ‘fabricated reclaimed.’ They want items made of wood such as actual barn doors, warehouse remnants, wooden wagon wheels, plank wood, fishing boats, wooden barrels, etc. We receive a lot of requests for copper top dining tables with wooden chairs and wooden top side tables with metal legs. We are able to mix and match any particular combination for you. All you have to do is ask.” HFM

KING HICKORY“King Hickory has been a family-owned, Hickory, NC based upholstery manufacturer for over 50 years. High-quality craftsmanship has been abundant in the Hickory culture for much longer than that, as the early settlers used plentiful natural resources to make everything they needed. These skills have been at the heart of the King Hickory success story as we blend the latest technology with generations of time-honored traditions. Our ‘American Made’ commitment includes buying most of our components from family-owned industries in the Carolinas.

King Hickory is proud to partner with Amish Oak & Cherry in featuring 800 predominately American-Made fabrics and leathers to our customers. For 50 years, King Hickory has been the leader in steel strap supported, 8-way hand-tied coil seat suspension offering competitive pricing on sized-to-fit design options for thousands of handcrafted high-quality products.”

~ Dan Linker, King Hickory Representative

LEATHERCRAFT“We never left America. We are thankful to have provided the highest quality seating for nearly fifty years. We know our vision is right since many of our customers are second and third generation buyers.

Leathercraft is and always has been family-owned and manufactured in America. Many families have made careers here passing down the story of time-honored craftsmanship from father to son, mother to daughter.

Truthfully, Dr. Seuss said it right when he said, ‘Why fit in when you were born to stand out?’

That is how we feel. Thank you for your loyalty, and know that Leathercraft is here to continually provide comfort and legitimate quality for our appreciated customers.”

What is the best way to clean leather?“That tends to be one of the most popular questions I receive. It is important to know what kind of leather the person owns. Most leathers are very easy to clean. Simply using a soft leather cleaner and a soft cloth will work for most leathers; however some leather types, such as nubucks or suedes, will be ruined if you use this type of product.”

How often do I need to clean my leather?“This honestly depends on the person and their lifestyle. It would make sense that someone with five children and four animals may need to clean their sofa more often than a single person without any pets. I always recommend cleaning your sofa at least twice a year, and more if you use it excessively. This will not only keep your leather clean, it will also keep your leather soft and prolong the life of your leather for many years.”

What about using saddle soaps or car seat cleaners for my leather furniture?“People ask me this all the time. Just remember that your sofa is not a saddle or a car seat and it does not consist of the same type of leather used in either. The process of how leather is made for saddles is very different than the process that is used for

leather furniture. And the leather wipes that people use for car seats have been known to damage leather furniture so you need to be very careful with what you use. Almost all leather car sets have a protective finish applied to them. Most leather wipes that are sold in your normal retail stores are typically nothing more than a heaving cleaning agent, which is far too strong for your leather furniture.”

What is the best way to erase scratches and marks on natural leather?“You will receive some bumps and bruises along the way no matter what type of leather

you choose. Many times with natural leather, the scratches add to the character of the leather; however if you want to erase some of these traces, there are some simple home remedies to treat them. For smaller marks, a hair dryer on low heat and slightly raised off your furniture will help bring the leather’s natural oil and wax back up to the surface. From here, you are able to simply rub out most smaller marks with a nice soft cloth. For deeper and larger marks or scratches, you may need to purchase a special leather conditioner that is made for either a wax pull up or an oil pull up. This will depend on your exact leather type so make sure you consult with a leather professional before applying any of these products to your sofa.”

What if I have children and/or animals? What is the best type of leather for me? “Well let me speak from my own personal experience. I have three kids, two large dogs and three cats. There is nothing besides leather that I would place in my home. This is a big concern for many people. If we know what your expectation is of the product, then we are able to suggest the right type of leather for you. If you are concerned about an animal puncturing your leather, a top grain or a full grain would be the best option for you. But, if you are worried about your dog or cat making scratch marks on your leather, a full grain would be the best due to the recovery characteristics of full grain leathers as noted above. A top grain or full grain leather will also help with ease of cleaning, especially when young children spill. Let’s face it, almost all dogs and cats shed. By choosing leather, you’ll be able to easily wipe down your pieces with a soft cloth vs. vacuuming them. Many people who suffer from severe allergies opt for leather because it is so easy to clean. So, what leather is best for you really depends on your current lifestyle.” HFM

MADE IN AMERICAGAT CREEK“Made in America means more than simply saving a job; it means doing the job right. We approach furniture manufacturing in a holistic manner and take pride both in what we create and how we create it. We employ over 120 people in West Virginia and use no assembly lines. Each piece we build is personally signed and dated by the artisan who created it. While other companies have closed factories, we have expanded and upgraded our finishing operations and now offer a Worry Free Finish that helps protect our furniture during everyday use. Thanks to our locally sourced material and production, we avoid oil-intensive shipping, deforestation and the unmitigated pollution that’s allowed with overseas production. In 2012, we won the furniture industry’s Sage Award for our innovative approach to sustainability. We are a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council and have earned Silver Exemplary Status. Simply stated, we care equally about our products, our people and the environment.”

~ Gat Caperton, Owner & CEOAMERICAN CLASSICS“We at American Classics take pride in every piece of furniture that we build. Every piece is held to the highest standards and is built by some of the best craftsmen in the furniture industry. We combine our solid hardwood frames with a true 8-way hand-tied seating system. Our leather hides are hand-picked for only the highest selection of quality top grain and/or full grain leather. We also use only the best foams for our seating cores. Putting this together will ensure a great looking and great sitting piece of furniture that will last for years to come. By manufacturing at this level here in America, it allows us to have the quality controls that we feel we would not be able to achieve from producing our product overseas.”

~ Jason Dunn, President

FRIENDSHIP UPHOLSTERY“Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in western North Carolina, lies a community of family and friends where three generations of true craftsmen come together to manufacture some of the finest built custom sofas and chairs you will find for the money spent. Our upholstery is built with the time-honored tradition of true 8-way hand tying each individual spring, using the finest hardwood oak and maple frames, and the best seating materials available. All our products are built by hand, one at a time, without production lines, reflecting the character of the craftsmen. Since 1971, we have prided ourselves in maintaining our standard of excellence, and although challenging at times, it is a tremendous value for your investment. Along the way, we have gained many friends and valuable customers and invite you to join us when making your next selection for your home furnishing needs.”

How many of us have real or even silk green trees, flowers or plants in our homes? Almost every fabric or rug pattern incorporates green somewhere into it. We treat it as a neutral color, but it is definitely a “natural” color. We wear various shades of green in every season. If you have a green person in your life, then you are extremely lucky. Green friends are genuine caregivers and nurturing souls. When you have a green friend, they are always your safe place and you are able to turn to them in any situation.

Ah, PURPLE …. One could almost say that this color has a duel personality! Think about the beauty of a purple hued sunset, big plump purple grapes begging to become high dollar wine, elegant tropical bird feathers rarely seen anywhere else, and the dark velvet purple rose that signifies an important event. Nature seems to get it right most of the time, but when we try to

recreate it, we sometimes mess things up.

Consider the purple hue in a painted car — this often looks cheap. Light purple paint many times looks childish. When using purple, always remember to keep it in the context that it was intended: pure elegance. Purple is a royal and magestic color and should be treated that way. If you are a purple person, you have QUITE the personality: strong, intelligent and remarkably self-confident. You are a magnificant person of style.

And finally, ORANGE. We seem to think of orange as bold and a bit funky at times, but in nature it is one of the earth’s core colors. All of our fall colors are orange, including all the harvest and comfort foods that sustain us throughout the winter. The actual foundation of dirt is created from orange hues. We use it to promote calmness and safety.

Our strong homes are built of brick and a safe and quiet horizon is orange. Fall is our favorite season to cozy up to the fire and spend time with loved ones. Orange keeps us grounded. If you are an orange

person, you tend to be a loving, comforting friend and always have an open door policy with lots of food and love to share with everyone. If you would like to know more about adding personality throughout your home through your own expression of colors, contact Sally Bentley, owner of Designing Women for your private design consultation. DESIGN COMPARISONContemporary designs favor large open spaces, so many times you will notice that kitchens connect with dining rooms and dining rooms connect with living rooms without any walls dividing them. Large windows are often used to brighten an interior space by bringing natural sunlight into the space to create a harmonious balance of manmade materials and nature. Outdoor views play a key role in the inside room’s color palette. Cedar and stone may be combined with natural finishes and mixed with steel, concrete and other industrial inspired materials.

Modern designs traditionally veer towards pure white walls that are crisp, clean and fresh to enhance the details of the room without drawing attention to themselves. They expand the space and offer a beautiful canvas to inspire great design. Wood, stone, leather, teak and linen quietly complement the space and provide warmth and texture without distracting from the overall look and

feel of the room. Modern designs prefer bare floors with area rugs scattered throughout each room and displayed in neutral colors from natural substances such as wool, jute or sisal.

For all of your contemporary or modern home décor, visit Reflections Home Furnishings, the only dedicated contemporary gallery located inside Hickory Furniture Mart. HFM

Hickory Furniture Mart has been well-known for years as one of North Carolina’s most trusted furniture and design resources and international travel destinations. The Mart offers a unique mix of first line showrooms (where custom furniture is available to order for any preference), galleries (special sections devoted to specific manufacturers), outlets (where discounted product is offered immediately “as is” off the showroom floor) and factory direct outlets (where special product is brought in directly from the manufacturers’ factories and also available immediately and sold off the floor “as is”).

Typical outlet savings range from 65-80 percent off normal retail prices. Most outlet product consists of retail showroom samples, overruns, closeouts, one of a kind High Point Market samples and custom orders that retailers have canceled or customers have returned for various reasons. New outlet product arrives direct from factories and retail

showrooms daily so outlet inventories are constantly changing. If you find something you seriously want in an outlet, it is best to secure your purchase right away since most outlets are not able to hold product and sales are offered on a first come, first serve basis.

Once an item is purchased in an outlet, it is rare that the same exact piece will be offered again. Most customers end up mixing and matching outlet items with custom product when furnishing their homes. The savings you can find on a piece of furniture inside an outlet will allow you to invest a little more in that custom fabric you need to place on another piece of furniture that you saw in a retail showroom and could not live without. And as an additional perk, you are able to take outlet product home with you immediately.

If you find out that you will be entertaining family at the last minute and need to furnish

that spare room, an outlet is the perfect place to pick up any additional items you may need in a short period of time. We have received several visits from customers who have experienced a natural disaster in their hometowns. They need furniture immediately and most of their local resources are typically backlogged with so much unexpected demand. Many of our outlets and retail showrooms will work together with victims and offer additional discounts with requested expedited delivery for entire communities affected by these types of disasters. Outlet product is also great for rental properties or second homes as you are able to furnish more rooms for much less.

Stop by and visit all of the outlets and showrooms inside Hickory Furniture Mart and take advantage of the tremendous selection and savings available throughout the entire year. HFM
