Message from the 2007-2008 ChairGreg Marien, Outgoing Chair

Summer is here, which means elections are over, Awards Banquet is complete, and now it’s time to hand over the reins to Kevin Willett, our new chair. I won’t be going far. I am still going to be active on the council as the Vice Chair - Long Range Planning. As outgoing chair, I also take up the role of the RAC VI representative.

It has been an exciting time as the chair of the San Diego section. For the last two years I have been part of a wonderful experience. Among the experiences, I have witnessed a growth in the Young Professionals group, an explosion at UCSD’s involvement in the AIAA and Pre-college outreach events, and chairing of the National En-gineers Banquet planning committee.

I would like to thank the entire council for their hard work and support making San Diego AIAA a national award winning section. We could not have done it without you.

My offer continues to stand for those that are in-terested in taking up a role in the San Diego sec-tion. Kevin Willett will be choosing his appointed chairs soon, so get on board early to find a posi-tion that you might be interested in pursuing.

See you all around the council chambers and at AIAA events. And as our local legend would say, and many of you know who I am talking about, “Over and out.”

Award Banquet 2008Keith Glassman, Honors & Awards, Career Enhancement

This years awards banquet followed the formula of the last few years maintaining a consistent re-cord of success. A full house was there to honor some of the best in San Diego aerospace.

The following pages list the recipients of awards given out by the AIAA San Diego section for ac-complishments by local San Diego aerospace companies and individuals. Also listed are the AIAA National Awards, which are given to the San Diego Council for their efforts.

Alex Fleet, the grandson of Reuben H. Fleet, founder of Consolidated Aircraft, was our guest of honor. He awarded ten Reuben H. Fleet Scholar-ships to deserving students. Since 1983, 116 students have received the scholarship. The scholarship is made possible by the Reuben H. Fleet Foundation at The San Diego Foundation.

Each year, AIAA national organizes a competition called Design Build and Fly (DBF). Teams from universities make remotely piloted aircraft which compete at the international DBF fly-off. For mak-ing a higher standing at the fly-off than SDSU, we presented the UCSD team with our perennial DBF trophy.

The Space Grant Education and Enterprise Insti-tute presented the Madison High School Devil Duckies

Robotics Team with a check to assist their team in the national U.S. FIRST Robotics Competition in Atlanta, GA.

AIAA selected the best two aviation related pro-jects at the 54th Annual Greater San Diego Sci-ence and Engineering Fair held April 1 through 6, 2007. Ian Larson and Zachary Sharpell were both handed $100 awards for their projects , "Hy-drogen Powered Rockets," and "Which Wing De-sign Creates the Greatest Lift" respectively.

Congressional Visits Day 2008Jenny Rhymer, Newsletter Editor

AIAA Congressional Visits Day (CVD) was held on April 16th this year. During this event AIAA members from across the country converged on capitol hill, meetings were arranged with numer-ous Senators and Representatives. They are given information about the 10 topics AIAA feels are important for the upcoming year. As part of the meeting a few topics are emphasized, specific to that member, and AIAA is offered as a resource for technical expertise. The goal of this event is to express the importance of long term investment in the sciences, engineering, and technology.

I was fortunate enough to attend this year and as part of the Region 6 delegation I met with staff from both Senator Feinstein and Senator Boxer’s offices as well as Representatives Bilbray, Issa, Lofgren, Rohrabacher and Davis. Throughout the day, the Region 6 delegation met with all five San Diego Representatives along with other members throughout southern California.

Some of the issues focused on this year were workforce development, life sciences, the re-evaluation of ITAR, the gap between shuttle re-tirement and CEV operations, and the FAA-UAV regulations. For more information visit the AIAA website. The day concluded with a congressional reception where members of congress, staff, and AIAA enjoyed amazing food. Overall the day was successful, and quite memorable for those in-volved. I was able to see how much an individual (or single organization) can do in working with their government.

A follow up to CVD is coming in August, when AIAA hosts August is for Aerospace. This event

involves visiting members of congress at their home offices during the August recess, right here in San Diego! More details will be provided in future newsletters, and on the website, but to anyone considering participating I strongly en-courage you to get involvement, both in August and next April.

Design Build Fly 2008Thomas Hong, UCSD Student

We started off this year as a team of about 14 juniors and seniors only with members from com-puter science, mechanical engineering, and aero-space engineering. As always our team advisor was Prof. John Kosmatka and our non-faculty advisors were Steve Neu and Steve Manganelli. Our sponsors included NASA/Space Grant, So-lidworks, NeuMotors, and Diversified Materials Company.

This was the first year UCSD was able to fly a prototype model before the design and construc-tion of the competition model and much was learned from the prototype. Innovative design choices for the aircraft involved such things as placing the wingspan across the main diagonal of the constraint box, swept forward horizontal tails in order to fit the constraint box, and a low place-ment of the wings for faster loading times.

The empty aircraft weighs 5.19 lbs of which 1.5 lbs is taken up by propulsion and controls systems. Loaded flying weight as proven in the competition was 14.5 lbs. At the competition, the aircraft was a crowd pleaser with its high lap count and beautiful flight characteristics. Crucial points were lost in propulsion optimization, which resulted in UCSD placing in 11th place. Currently the aircraft is being refurbished in order to be dis-played at UCSD's Geisel Library.

UCSD in MicrogravityTim Havard, UCSD Student

One of the highlights this year for the UCSD AIAA Student Chapter is the addition the Microgravity University Team. The project, also identified as the Reduced Gravity Student Flight Program, is run by NASA, Johnson Space Center where stu-dent teams nationwide are selected to conduct research under a zero gravity environment. UCSD's AIAA team was one of the 40 teams cho-

sen, of over 70 that applied. This rich experience provides for an excitement of a lifetime by allow-ing undergraduates to not only experience micro-gravity, but also gain practice in experimental re-search.

This year's area of focus for UCSD’s Microgravity team was centered on deployable tensegrity structures, and exploring the potential use as fu-ture space habitats or radar dishes. Led by team leader, Timothy Havard along with faculty mentor, Professor Bob Skelton, the team put together a cylindrical tensegrity structure and tested the ex-periment on board the C-9, Microgravity-Simulating aircraft, during the first available flight the week of April 16, 2008. This year all five team flyers successfully flew on the plane and came back to UCSD with many stories to tell. The rest of the team flyers and alternate flyer includes An-tonio Diaz, Derek Peterson, Andrea Qualm, and Jacqueline Yu.

SPACE 2008 in San DiegoEducation Alley is coming to San Diego. This unique educational opportunity will happen right here in San Diego from September 9 through 11.The look of wonder in a child's eyes is a wonder-ful thing to behold. Look carefully at the eyes of these girls attending Education Alley when it was in Long Beach, California. They are interested, intrigued, and involved in what is happening. This kind of active learning happens at Education Alley

every year and you can be part of it by volunteer-ing to help with this amazing event.

What happens at Education Alley?Students have the amazing opportunity to meet the professionals in the exciting field of aero-space. NASA brings displays of things they are working on. Aerospace companies bring displays of their products. Special speakers and present-ers talk about the work that they do. Education Alley is more than just listening or looking it is also doing. Demonstrations, presentations, spe-cial guests, hands on activities, and a few sur-prises will help students and teachers find more out about space. Students have the opportunity to do hands on activities. In the past they measured the height of things with a protractor, they froze flowers, they created craters, they used a solar cooker to toast a marshmallow, and they even ate marshmallows that they froze. Alley is the place to learn and have FUN. We will need your help! AIAA will need our San Diego Section's help to have things run smoothly. Volunteers are needed

to do a host of different tasks. We will need help ranging f rom s imple clerical help at the registra-tion desk to v o l u n t e e r s w h o e s c o r t small groups of the students

and their chap-erones through the Main Exhibit Hall. Each tour guide will be able to choose the locations within the Hall that they would prefer to visit with the children. This is a wonderful place for AIAA Stu-dent Members to participate! We will also need engineers to staff the "Ask the Engineer" Booth. These volunteers interact with the students by answering questions posed by the students. This is a wonderful spot for people who enjoy interact-ing with kids. This spot has become one of the favorites of the children. New this year is the "Story Telling" Booth. The perfect spot for our re-tired members to reminisce about the "good old days". Bring an artifact or two with you and share the stories that go with it.Call Sharon Freeburn at 619-847-5518 to volunteer for this exciting event!
