Greetings Nobles and Ladies,
For those of you who were not able to help at the Hermosa MudBog contest, you will w ant to make plans to attend ne xt year.We were able to raise about $1,300 from the concessions andCalcutta for the Travel Fund and have a lot of fun while doingit. In addition, the Mud Bog Association plans on making anadditional donation to the Travel Fund after they know their finalnumbers. They told us the y were in hopes of being able to
donate up to $5,000, including what we raised, to the Fund. They also want to make thisan annual event, co-sponsored by NAJA, so this could be a lucrative event for the TravelFund going forward.
Thank you to PP Ste ve Hendrickson and Moyle Petroleum for sponsoring the CommonCents Golf Tournament. This was a very successful tournament again. There were 142golfers, including 11 Nobles from NAJA and 4 from Korein. The amount raised this yearwas approximately $72,000 for 6 Temples in SD, NE, WY, ID and UT. NAJA’s share ofthis will be just shy of $23,000 that will go to our Travel Fund. This has consistently beenour largest fund raiser for the Travel Fund, so thanks again to Steve and the Moyle family.
The D.A.D.S. dinner and the Honored Ladies e vening were both well attended. Thankyou to all who showed up in support of our Dri vers and our Honored Ladies. These arealways 2 of the more enjoyable functions we have each year.
The Hospital Evaluation and Outreach Clinic was very successful again. I believe we hadapproximately 45 potential new patients attend on Friday. Thank you to Rhonda for allyour hard work in putting this together and making it such a successful event.
The last e vent we ha ve planned for this year is the Mo vie Day/Christmas P arty onDecember 8th at the Shrine Club when we in vite all of our Shrine Children to join ourfamily for a fun day of mo vies, popcorn, and a visit from Santa Claus. I hope you canmake it.
This will be the last article I write for the “Notes from the Pote” section of the Nugget,and I would like to once again thank you for the opportunity to serv e as your 2012Potentate. NAJA has had a very successful year, and it couldn’t have been accomplishedwithout the support of you and your Ladies. It has been a wonderful year because of you!
In closing, Thia and I would like to wish you and your f amily a joyous Holiday Seasonand a Happy New Year!

GRAND FORKS, ND – At the 2012 Midwest Shrine Association annual meeting, hosted this yearby KEM Shrine from August 8 and 11, NAJA Temple units were well represented with members ofthe various units garnering much-deserved recognition in several competitions.
Among the big winners were Joel “Katchup” Stephens taking a 1st place a ward in the WhitefaceMakeup category and Ron “Pokie” Nenaber who took a 3rd place award for Whiteface Makeup.
Stephens also won a 2nd place in 1-Man Skit and a 2nd place in Multi-Balloons. Stephens then tooka 3rd place award in Paradability. Rounding out his big year – teamed up with Chris “Tiny” Bukius—the pair placed 3rd in the 2-Man Skit competition.
Not to be totally outdone in clown appeal, a combination of the Belle Fourche Clown Patrol and RapidCity Clowns had six of their numbers place 2nd in Parade Competition. Those honored with the 2ndPlace plaque for Paradability were: Tom “Buster” Riley, Larry “Zippy” Weiers, Ron “Pokie” Nenaber,Chris “Tiny” Bukius, Rick “Flash” DeHa ven, and Joel “Katchup” Stephens. DeHa ven, Weiers andBukius also competed in Aguste Makeup Competitions. Weiers teamed up with Nenaber in a 2-ManSkit event. Bukius and a ne w clown, DeHaven, competed in Aguste Makeup. Naja Shriner MarkBurgaad served as an official at this year’s competition.
Fourteen Shrine Temples with members from North and South Dak ota, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin,Minnesota, Saskatchewan and Manitoba make up the Midwest Shrine Association.
NAJA units took part in parades through town on Thursday evening and Saturday morning of the four-day-long event. Various Temples conduct business meetings, dinners and programs with counterparts,unit competitions and contests, and v aried fun acti vities, musical performances, and muchentertainment.
Many of those attending this year from N AJA loaded onto a Dak ota Bus Service liner at the RapidCity Shrine Club Tuesday afternoon and enjoyed an over-night stop at the Fort Yates, ND Casino andHotel before arriving in Grand Forks on Wednesday. Even our Illustrious Sir Casey Derflinger and hisLady Thia rode with the bus group.

NAJA Gets Big Welcome at Midwest Event

GRAND FORKS, ND - During the 2012 Midwest Shrine Association annual meeting, hosted this yearby the KEM Shriners from August 8 to August 11, the parade units on hand from N AJA Temple weremade to feel right at home by the family of Francis Grindy of Grand Forks.
Residents’ patience was put to the test while the various Shrine Temple groups lined up for the parade onThursday evening all along the streets from 1st Avenue N all the way to 9th Avenue N with everythingfrom horses to silly cars and noisy Oriental bands blasting away.
The wait for the parade to get underway sometimes stretches into nearly three hours. Traffic is confused,pedestrians in the neighborhoods are troubled to find a path around the hubbub and the noise levels areaoften nearly out of control.
“With all this turmoil underw ay,” Francis Grindy, 92, of 412 7th Avenue N, “made us all feel lik e wewere playing outside at our Grandma’s house,” said Potentate Casey Derflinger.
A large detail of NAJA Clowns, mini go-carts, mini four -wheelers and all their hauling equipmentcrowded the street in front of her home as she and her f amily stood on the front stoop talking to all theguys and enjoying the sites. Her family convinced Francis to climb on board a gold cart and escorted herdowntown along the parade route to watch from the sidelines.
“Much to our surprise, when we came back for the Saturday morning parade lineup, Francis and herfamily had set up a picnic table and pro vided hot coffee, donuts, and cookies for all the N AJA Shrineguys lined up on her street,” smiled Derflinger.
“Everywhere we went in Grand F orks during our visit, the people ofGrand Forks made us feel right at home,” he said. “This town has greatpeople and our visit was “Grand” for all of us.”

HOSPITAL NEWS…Hospital Division HappeningsShriners Hospitals for Children have implementedthe new policies and practices that are designed toease and speed up patient access to services. Now,the old-time paper application has been eliminated,enabling patient families to contact the hospital ina number of different ways, fax, e-mail, phone andmail, and most importantly, the hospitals are ableto immediately schedule an appointment withoutthe extra steps required by the old process.
Business cards are available with the contactphone numbers and can be obtained from ourHospital Division office or if you need furtherinformation, you can call the office at 343-4279.
Evaluation and Outreach Clinics were held onOctober 5th and 6th in Rapid City. Approximately43 patients were screened by staff from ShrinersHospital for Children - Twin Cities on Friday. Thefollowing day, approximately 60 establishedpatients were seen, thankful that they did not haveto make the trek to the Twin Cities hospital.Remember, children up to age 18 are eligible forcare at Shriners Hospitals for Children if there isa reasonable possibility they can benefit from thespecialized services available. Acceptance is basedsolely on a child’s medical needs, regardless oftheir ability to pay.
Fire Prevention Week was held the week ofOctober 8th in cooperation with the Rapid CityFire Department. NAJA Nobles providededucational material on fire/burn prevention tostudents in kindergarten thru third grades. Anestimated 3,500 coloring/activity books wereprovided to the schools’ teachers for handout to thestudents. The fire departments puppet show,emphasizing their teaching points, was as usual,
very entertaining. A well-deserved thank you toNAJA’s hospital board members, Don Mattson,Lowell Holmgren and Jim Hopkins, forcoordinating Nobles to visit the schools, and thoseNobles who actually attended each performance.
The annual NAJA Shrine Hospital D.A.D.S.Appreciation Dinner was held on September 10that the Rapid City Shrine Club. Thirty-four driversand their guests, and members were treated to afine meal prepared by Nancy Miller with the helpof the Rapid City Shrine Club Board. Guestspeakers were Detective Bob Palmer andInvestigator Taylor Sperle; both are with the localDrug Task Force. Their presentation mainlydiscussed new synthetic drugs, their appearanceand affects.
D.A.D.S. officers were elected and Noble VinceSeaman was thanked for rewriting the newdriver’s manual. Vince also won the drawing forthe new jacket. Our new drivers for 2012 wererecognized, which are Pat Adkins, Ray Leeman,Howard Mehringer, and Ron Nenaber. I would liketo conclude with a thank you to NAJA’s Potentatefor continuing to support the annual D.A.D.S.dinner.
Our need for a hospital van Safety andMaintenance Coordinator was discussed. At theconclusion of the D.A.D.S. dinner, Noble GuyDonley stepped up and volunteered to take overthis highly-needed job. At this writing, twoadditional Nobles, Scott Olsen and Robert Jesso,have come forward to take over this job entirely.The three of them will work together.

TWIN CITIES HOSPITAL NEWSFall is coming, the leaves are falling, and time has slippedaway from me for preparing the latest news from the TwinCities hospital. I will try to gi ve everyone a shortenedversion of your hospital’s busy and challenging summer.Many changes have taken place.
Dr. Guidera is wearing tw o hats. He continues to serv eus as Chief of Staff plus he’s flying each week to Floridasince being chosen to be the interim Medical Director ofALL Shrine hospitals. Dr . Carey Mielke has beenpromoted to Assistant Chief of Staf f. Mary Kauto,Outreach Director, left us in September . We have hiredErin Jurkovich to take Mary’s position.
The hospital continues to use v arious surgeons fromMayo Clinic, Gillette Hospital, and the Uni versity ofMinnesota. We are currently in the process of hiringanother full-time orthopaedic surgeon. We are continuingto pursue an af filiation process with v arious entities.Hope to be having an exciting announcement soon. StayTuned!
Charlie Lobeck continues to have lots of activities goingon every month with all emplo yees participating. Hekeeps everyone updated with the Pulse publication on e-mail. I hope everyone is reading the Pulse as it has v eryvaluable information. If you don’ t receive it, please letme know.
Our Evaluation Clinic was held at the Rapid City ShrineClub on October 5, with the Outreach Clinic being heldon October 6 at the F amily Medicine Residency Clinic.
The Twin Cities hospital staff that attended the clinicswere very pleased with the number of ne w patients wehad to be screened. Rapid City continues to generatesome of the lar gest numbers of children we canpotentially help. Thank you to all of the nobles and ladieswho helped to make this such a success. A special thankyou to Rhonda Hook and Curtis Bentz for their hard workin making the clinics successful.
I had the privilege of going to Buffalo, SD for their OpenAir Lodge at the Slim Buttes in September . Don Engel,our hospital Donor De velopment Director, and se venmasons from Rapid City attended the e vent and werepresented a $25,000 donation to the Twin Cities hospitalfrom Mr. and Mrs. Dave Penn. A plaque was presentedto them in appreciation. Pictures are included in this issueof the Nugget.
Also, a special thank you to the NAJA Greeters for theirkind donation to the hospital again this year . Noble JimHopkins presented a check for $ 2,500 at the D.A.D.S.Appreciation dinner on behalf of the Greeters. Theircontinued support of your hospital is an e xample for allunits to follow, as these additional funds mak e such adifference in what the hospital can do for the Shrinechildren.

Oh what fun you can ha ve with a little MUD! TheNAJA Shriners were the proud co-sponsors for the firsttime of the Hermosa Mud Bog event held on September8th. Nobles and their ladies w orked in concessionstands selling hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, chips,drinks, etc. Watching the trucks splash through the mudwas a big hit. The kids had great fun in the mud with arace to pick up plastic e ggs filled with money. NobleNoel Larson represented the N AJA Shriners with hisvehicle. Even the clowns got in the act by handing outtoys to all the kids there and playing around the mud.They were oh so careful not to get dirty though! Thisevent was a big hit and the money raised is going to theNAJA Shrine Travel Fund. Watch for an announcementof next year’s Mud Bog and come on out and get a littledirty with the gang.

I can’t believe this is the last issue for the year!With that thought in mind, let me wish everyone a BlessedHoliday, and a most prosperous New Year. This lastNugget is my trivia issue; and to get you in the HolidaySpirit here is a true story. This is from RWB (Past DGM from Grand Lodge ofTexas) Pete Martinez. I was working at the TexasDepartment of Transportation fair booth at the East TexasState Fair in 2000, it happened to be Senior Citizens Dayor Old Folks Day ( I can say that as I am one of them). Iwas standing behind a gondola of give-a-away items whena man spotted the Square and Compass on my lapel. Hehad a huge smile on his face and came around and stuckout his right hand and gave me that “friendly orbrotherly” grip. I then asked him what lodge he belongedto, but he just kept smiling and said nothing.After a few more questions with the same response, hiswife walked up and told me that he had Alzheimers andcould not remember what lodge he belonged to or evenwhere he was a that point in time. That Square andCompass triggered something in his memory and he knewwhat to do about it.
My eyes still get moist when I think about it—PeteMartinez!!!Oh what power the Square & Compass has! Whatincredible dedication a Mason has to his obligations. Itseems now days we just do not use common sense in ourdecisions. Masonry led our country during WWII; FDR-Truman-MacArthur and many members of Congress. Weneed more Masons in high offices; but enough of mythoughts on politics!My brothers, wear your Square and Compass and yourShrine pins proudly, spreading the word about ourwonderful organizations. By doing this, maybe we willbe able to increase our “fold” for the betterment of theworld. Have a great Holiday season and hopefully I willhave the extreme honor to serve as your Chaplain in thecoming year.REMEMBER THIS: If you are over 80 years old, goahead and buy that new car or anything you want, becauseit probably won’t wear out!See you next year. Appreciation Dinner Meeting

A short update on results from our annual D.A.D.S. Dinnerheld on the 10th of September at the Rapid City Shrine Club.Several Shrine Hospital caps and a D.A.D.S. coat wereawarded to members whose names were dra wn andpresented. Congratulations to Vince Seaman, as he w as thewinner of the coat.
It was reported that the (D.A.D.S.) shirt program is wellreceived and remains in effect. An updated D.A.D.S. DriversManual was handed out to those present. It’ s important thatall drivers get their copy. If you haven’t received yours, pleasesee Rhonda. You will need to fill out the included form andreturn it to the Hospital Division office. This Manual containsmost answers and directions for trips to and from the hospital.
A reminder: please read, fill out and initial the required paperwork included in the van briefcase, before and after your trip.
The annual election of of ficers was held and Don Huxfordwas elected President, Roger Andersen, Vice President andJohn Wise, Secretary for the ensuing year.
A question w as brought up about meeting times for theD.A.D.S. Unit after a brief discussion it was voted to have atleast four meetings a year. Times and dates will be researchedand announced. The annual Hospital D.A.D.S. Dinnermeeting will be dependent on the Divan’s decision to have it,as it is their appreciation dinner for the D.A.D.S.

In years past, the
event has received rave reviews andoaths to return. But get your tick etsearly! Ev eryone who attended lastyear said “This event is amazing!” Soyou know…. they will sell out fast.
The esteemed Rapid City Central Jazzband will again entertain the Noblesand Ladies and guests in attendance.There will be an opportunity topurchase auction items and more.Last year f ine wines, dishes,statuettes, a St. Patrick’s Day dinner(two in f act), silverware, watches,coins, cigars, jewelry, and much moredonated by Shriners and localbusinesses were auctioned of f in asilent auction. This year the Greetersensure it will be as good or better inthat regard.
Tickets are only sold in advance andwill not be sold at the door. Alltables will be reserved. These ticketsare very reasonable when compared tosimilar (but not better) events whichcan cost $75 to $100 a plate, and withless wine! Tickets for this e vent are$35 per person, and tables seat 6 to 8.Those who attended the e vent last

Common Cents Charity Golf Tournament Raises$72,000!
The 2012 Common Cents Charity Golf Tournament was again a successfulevent raising o ver $72,000, thanks to the ef forts of their suppliers,customers and especially the dedicated emplo yees of Common Cents.This year’s tournament was held on September 11th in Rapid City at theGolf Club at Red Rock to support Shriner’s Patient Transportation Fundsin their 5-state trade area.
The tournament continues to be the “must attend e vent” amongstcompetitors which is evident by this year‘s number of players – 142 whichincluded 15 Nobles, 11 from Naja and a team of 4 from the Korein Templeout of Casper , WY. Golfers constantly comment on the le vel ofprofessionalism and organization and their enjoyment of the relaxed formatof our event. With their suppliers help, we were able to net $40,000!
However, the real story again is the level of commitment exhibited by allof the Common Cents emplo yees during their annual store donationcampaign. This year they raised over $32,000 all of which will stay locallyto support the 6 Shrine Temples benefiting from the tournament. Naja willreceive a check totaling close to $23,000 to support our local transportationfund.

Your essay should be a story from your life as it relates to being a Shriner. A personal essaygives the reader an intimate glimpse of the author’s experience, observations, thoughts or
feelings. The individual stories of our members make up the history of our organization andby preserving them on paper you will help us tell the story of Shriners International.
It does not matter whether you are 25 or 85, if you are an experienced writer or have notformally written anything since you were in school. Please take the time to reflect on your
life as a Shriner. We love reading all your stories and appreciate your participation.
What are some of the qualities of a good personal essay?
How will the winners be recognized?The top three essays and winner photos will be printed in the 2012-2013
Annual Report as well as in a new Shriner publication that will be relased inJuly 2013. They will receive a plaque and a pin and will be recognized

CIF requests that were appro ved:Provost - $56.82 for fez changes; andthe Hospital D.A.D.S. -$114.48 fortaillight decals and $94.88 for shirts
The Divan voted to purchase the usedHospital Division Van for the trade-invalue of $6,000.
PP Baumberger will research andsubmit guidelines for the use of theDivan van.
The possibility of adding on to thecurrent equipment shed at the ShrineClub was discussed. Noble Palmer willobtain bids on v arious options. TheDivan decided that an y non-shrineproperty located in the shed needs to beremoved.
Hospital Division Report for the Monthof July was given by Bentz: 7 van trips,2 airline tick ets purchased using100,000 miles, and 408 total patients.
SEPTEMBERDavid Ruth, Jr. presented his report onthe 2012 Northern Hills Circus. Thecircus went very well. $15,000.00 waspresented to the NAJA Temple.
CIF requests that were granted: BelleFourche Clowns -$74.20 for shirts;Hospital D.A.D.S. - $51.68 for shirts;NAJA Air Patrol - $600.71 for suppliesand repairs; Pro vost - $48.49 for fezalterations.
Potentate Derflinger read a letter fromImperial instructing each temple toimmediately discontinue an y form ofhazing including anything that wouldmake a person feel uncomfortable.
Noble Ruth, Jr . gave a report on theMCA. Rules were mailed to allorganizations using the Deadw oodBuilding. Lead Masonic Lodge hasclosed and the y will be holdingmeetings in Deadwood.
Noble Pat Roberts spoke to the Divanregarding his emeritus status. He willhave one more year before he qualif iesfor emeritus status and asked the Divanfor their support in 2013.
OCTOBERThe Hospital Division Report was givenby Curtis Bentz for September: 7 tripswere made including 2 to Chicago. Wereceived 1 ne w patient and 2 ne wapplicants; total of 409 patients. TheClinic was very successful with 44children attending and 29 ne w patientsaccepted. At the Outreach Clinic 55children were seen.
PP Don Mattson presented a letter fromthe Imperial Potentate requesting allTemples change the wording used withregard to patient care. Instead of “freecare” or “care without cost” we need tosay that Shriners Hospitals pro vide thehighest quality medical care to children“regardless of the patient’s or family’sability to pay.” This is being done dueto the contracts Shriners Hospitals havewith many insurance carriers.
