Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

Are we having fun yet? I know that Lady Krista, Little Lady Lexie, and I are havingthe time of our li ves. It is hard to belie ve that we are halfw ay through the yearalready. Since our last issue, many events have taken place.

We started off with the Naja Circus in Rapid City. It was 5 wonderful shows andmay end up being one of our best years yet. We had a Spring Ceremonial inDeadwood that was unbelievable. We had 13 of the most fun new Nobles you canimagine, a great parade, and I believe a fun time was had by all. Next up was theannual bus trip to Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. We made it a 3 day trip wherebesides the tour of the hospital, we also enjoyed a baseball game and an afternoonat the Mall of America. This is a must trip if you ha ve never been on it. ThePotentate’s Ball in Deadwood was next on the agenda. We want to thank all of youwho attended the golf day as well all the other acti vities. I think everyone had agreat time all weekend. It was a weekend we will not soon for get. I ended June

with representing Naja while w atching our very own Noble Mike Rodman will be sw orn in as our ne w GrandMaster of South Dakota. July started off in Tampa for the Imperial Session where we endured sweltering heat buthad a great time. Next were the Outdoor Circuses. All the shows were well attended and everyone worked veryhard and had a fun time doing it.

But there is so much more yet to do. MSA Summer Session in Marquette, MI (8-3 to 8-6). And there are manyother club meetings and events along the way.

Once again, we want to thank all of you for helping mak e this a fantastic year and we look forward to see all ofyou in the coming weeks at as many events and unit meetings as possible.

Remember…..When in doubt…..HAVE MORE FUN !!!!

CIRCUSES

The Naja circuses are in the history books and it w as another banner year . Therewere some changes to our normal circus schedule and we were forced to try a fe w newideas this year. Lemmon was booked solid with Boss Cowman Days which left us nochoice but to move the circus to Hettinger , ND. We returned with shows to Faith andPhilip for the first time in many years. The Day's of 76 Rodeo Grounds in Deadw oodcompletely remodeled their kitchen and hired a food service, so we lost the foodconcessions in Deadwood.

We did however turn all the ne gatives into positi ves. The Faith and HettingerCircuses were both well attended and v ery accepted by the local communities.Despite the heat on Sunday afternoon, the bleachers were packed full in Philip. Anafternoon rain shower in Deadwood cooled things down so the evening attendancein Deadwood was one of our largest.

From the Circus Chairmen:The Rapid City Shrine circuses were w onderfully successful due to the man yvolunteers who came out and w orked so hard. Without the nobles and theirfamilies and friends who do so much for our circuses, the y would not be assuccessful as they were. I w ould like to thank each and e very one of you foryour tireless work and dedication to our cause. Thank you so very much.

Scott Sharp, Rapid City Circus Chairman

✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶

The West River Shrine Unit would like to thank its Nobles, Ladies, families, friends andthose from other units that v olunteered to help. With everyone's hard w ork anddedication this year’s circuses were a great success.

Keith Hanson, Faith & Hettinger Circus Chairman

✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶

Thank you to everyone that helped make this another great circus in Deadwood. We lostthe food concessions this year but with the kitchen workers freed up to help elsewhere wehad record sales in novelties, snowcones and cotton candy. A very special thank you goesto William "Candy Man" Biegger and his crew for making and bagging all the cotton candyfor both Deadwood and Philip. Their hot sticky work helped raise thousands of dollars forNaja and their dedication is very much appreciated by all.

Kip Wagner, Deadwood Circus Chairman

✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶

The Four River Shrine Club would like to thank everyone who volunteered their time tosell tickets, pound tent stakes, haul chairs, park cars, or sell water. The first circus backin Philip in twenty-six years w as a huge success. The people of Philip and thesurrounding area turned out to fill the bleachers and enjoyed the show despite the recordheat. Plans are already underway for next year's show.

Joel Stephens, Philip Circus Chairman

NAJA SHRINERS ATTENDTHE SHRINE HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN

TWIN CITIES HOSPITAL DAYOn Friday, May 20, 32 Naja Shriners and guests boarded a charter busfor a trip to the Shrine Hospital for Children - Twin Cities open house. After arriving at the hotel, most people chose to attend the MinnesotaTwins baseball game. It was a beautiful evening and we had the samegood seats we had last year, but this time the Twins lost their game tothe Toronto Blue Jays!

On Saturday morning Nobles and guests attended Hospital Day. Sincesome Nobles had driven themselves, a total of 39 Nobles and guestsrepresented Naja. Upon arri val, everyone was welcomed by thehospital administration and tours of the hospital follo wed along withprograms presented within the different departments. It was a beautifulday and many local Shrine units, such as the Shrine Motorc ycle unitand Horse Patrol were present to add to the festi vities. It is alwaysexciting to see the services that we as Shriners support.

At noon, it was back on the bus to return to the hotel. From there, manyof the Nobles and guests went to the Mall of America to experiencethe shopping, events and attractions, and of course search for the “one”of more than 50 restaurants for supper, they have to offer. It was a busyday, but everyone had a great time. Sunday morning we loaded the buswith our purchases and headed home.

This year this event was planned for a 3-day trip instead of returningafter Hospital Day on Saturday . Many of the nobles enjo yed theadditional time together . If you ha ve not attended Hospital Dayrecently, you should consider this trip next year. It is a great time andyou will be amazed at the work we support through Shrine Hospitalsfor Children - Twin Cities.

WE HAVE A PARAOLYMPIAN!ROAD TO THE PARALYMPICS: US PARALYMPIC

TRIALS MEET IN CHARLOTTE, NCWith one race left to go, Natalie Sims, a 19-year -old YWCA MinneapolisOtters swim team member, had to hear the truth of the upcoming 100-meterfreestyle final. She was seeded third after a best-matching swim in themorning, but there was a chance that even that would not be enough to gether onto the Rio Paralympic Team.

Otters Head Coach Dave Cameron laid out the stakes ahead: “We’ve goneover all the strategic and technical details we can. But you need to kno w something about this race. It’s not justyour last race at this year’s trials. It’s very likely the last para race that we will be together for. If it goes well, youjoin your national team coaches in Rio. If it doesn’ t, you still look forward to your college coaches next year atUniversity of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. But this is it for you and me on deck. You have to swim this one for you, andyou have to swim it for us.” Natalie paused before responding. “You’re going to get me all emotional.”

That was exactly the plan. F acing the new world record-holder in the S9 100-meter freestyle swim, and thepossibility that she’d be excluded from the Rio Games e ven with an event victory, Natalie had to bring more tothis race than any before. She had earned times f ast enough to be on the Emer ging Team, which is for athleteswith potential for future national and international meets, but she had yet to make a National Team qualifying timein any swim.

Making the National Team brings a litany of resources to a swimmer and their f amily, from financial and travelsupport, to equipment, insurance and scholarship opportunities. But the qualifying time for the National Team wasover a second faster than Natalie’s best, and she wasn’t even seeded as the runner-up. As she left her coach to walkto the ready room before the race, she turned around and gave her coach her version of a fist bump- his fist againsther right arm, which is a limb-deficient mid-wrist. “I’ve got this.”

The RaceNatalie started the race with a speed we’ve never seen from her before. She moved to the edge of the lane to swimclose to Michelle Konkoly, the world record-holder who was seeded almost six seconds faster than Natalie. Nataliedrove her kick, picked up her tempo, and stayed with Michelle into the w all at the 50 meter mark. Her opening 50 meters was within tenths of her fastest 50 meters of her life! Coming of f the wall, she could see that she hadmoved into second, ahead of tw o national team members and ahead of an y pace she’d ever maintained. Strokeafter stroke, she extended her lead, coming back almost 1.5 seconds faster than her back 50 meters of the morningpreliminary swim.

As she rushed into the f inish, she timed it perfectly to land on her left arm, necessary for a speed adv antagebecause of the limb deficiency on her right arm. She looked up and couldn’t believe the time. She had over a twosecond drop from her previous race, had won second place and was over a second ahead of the National Teamqualifying time.

She was stunned and o verjoyed. No matter what the US P aralympic team announced, she had e xceeded herexpectations, and demonstrated what thousands of hours of training over the last four years at YWCA Minneapolishad delivered.

Making the USA Paralympic TeamAfter another sleepless night of anticipation, Coach Dave let us know it had just been announced that Natalie Sims,a YWCA Minneapolis Otter for 4.5 years, will represent Team USA at the Rio Paralympics in September. Afterthree days of swim race trials in Charlotte, North Carolina, 21 female and 10 male para athletes were selected tojoin the USA Paralympic swim team. This is another milestone in Natalie’s accomplished swim journey. She willcontinue to receive support from her friends, family and the YWCA community who have all helped drive her tothe world stage, where she is now ranked in the top 8 in two events. Congratulations, Natalie!

THE FALL RIVER SHRINE PATROLThe Fall River Shrine Patrol hosts the bingo game at the F allRiver 4H Members Assembly Spring Carnival every year. In2016, the Patrol held the bingo in March. They sell cards, callthe bingo game, and sort and distribute the prizes. The prizesare collected by the 4H members from local sources in the FallRiver County Area. Pictured here are the shriners and ladieswho helped out this year. Back Row (Left to Right) are Nobles Roger Horton,

Dave Baker, Dean Cape, Wayne Hageman, Al Jensenand Cub Wood. Front Row are Mrs. Horton, Mrs. Cape,Mrs Rowley, and Mrs Jensen. Mrs Rowley has beenthe bingo caller for several years; she also representsthe Martha Chapter of the Eastern Star in Hot Springs.

Dear Shrine family,

It has been three months since Daughters of the Nile 2016-2017officers were installed, yet it seems like it’s been a lot longer than that. What is most impressive, we already initiated a new member: BarbaraWilley, welcome to our family!

Installation was a great event despite the weather that k ept someattendants away. I thank all those brave souls that made it throughto find out that Custer w as sunny. That’s the Black Hills weatherfor you! At the end of the ceremon y, all attendants enjo yed aMexican Fiesta. Of course, tamales and salsas delighted, or fire up,our taste buds!

In April, Daughters of the Nile hosted the Tea and Style show whichwas a great success and everyone had great fun. As mentioned then, some ways to assist our hospital is through pop tops, Education BoxTops and Campbell Soup labels. Word is out that Campbell Souplabels will be discontinued August 1st. If you have been saving them, please make sure to contact a DON member or send them to theCincinnati, Northern California and Tampa Hospitals no later thanmid-July.

In our first stated sessions of the year, the Temple voted to move ourmeeting place to the Shriners Center . Plans were made, hands gotbusy and we are now getting ready to host our Annual Supreme Queenvisit, September 1st . Don’ t forget to jot the date do wn in yourcalendars, dear Nobles and Ladies, as you are invited to partake in thebanquet following the ceremonial.

Speaking of Supreme, the annual con vention took place inIndianapolis, IN, June 14th to 19th. Over 1,300 delegates representing134 Temples throughout the United States and Canada attended. Asalways, the drummers and pageantry entertained the audience to theextent that our Imperial Potentate said that Daughters of the Nile is agroup that knows how to have fun.

Great news! Daughters of the Nile raised o ver $3 million last yearalone for our hospitals! In the le gislation arena, among other piecesof legislation, an amendment to add “a personal friend of a Daughter

of the Nile” with no masonic background, failed; however, the amountof votes in favor was higher this time than last year. Please share withyour masonic family and friends what Daughters of the Nile is allabout and encourage them to join our great organization. Also, a newTemple is being born in Memphis, TN; if you happen to be inMemphis in July, stop by to join in the celebration. Supreme sessionin 2017 will be held in Niagara Falls, NY. I am super excited!!

I had the privilege to visit in the Hospital in Mexico City during ourfamily vacation. Information worth noting is that it there is onlyone hospital that co vers all the states in Me xico, from North toSouth, East to West ; 60,000 patients are seen a year; 9 doctors areon staff; patients have access to dental and speech therapy, one ofthe dentists have seen patients for 35 years! And the story on howit started is amazing.

The facilities are very nice. I was in awe at the water rehab premises.Dr. Gerald Harris, PHD, Director of Motion Analysis Lab of ShrinersHospital in Chicago, w as there doing a presentation on MotionAnalysis lab, the donor is anon ymous. Our Past Supreme Queen,Sharon K. St. John w orked together with our Imperial Potentate toget a much needed efficient X-ray equipment to assist patients. I didlearn that the Hospital in Mexico City would be very appreciative ofdonations from as little or as much as one is able. These donationscan be made through the Shriners Hospital website, under Me xicoCity Hospital. During our visit, our 2 and a half year old grandsondonated coins and got a fezz Guess what he’s going to do when heturns 18.

Moving forward, this summer promises to be fun. Please be in thelookout for a date at the dri ve-in theater in Hermosa, followed by adinner. Nobles, friends, family, all are welcome to attend, no specialagenda, just to have fun. Also, jot down in your calendars September3rd for a wine tasting trip in the Black Hills. Once again, all arewelcome to come.

Until I see you again, in Nile love,

Adriana DeHaven, Queen
